Supposedly this song was used for timing the pumping out of a sailing ship before the crew left the ship after a voyage was finished. Now-a-days its apparently sung in the British Royal Navy when a ship is decommissioned and the crew is leaving for the last time.
For those who have been asking, this is a "pump song." It was normal for water to leak into the hold of the ship during the course of sailing, but that water naturally needed to be gotten rid of from time to time. Crews would man hand-powered bilge pumps to accomplish this, and pump shanties were used to help the men set a steady pace. This particular shanty was typically sung at the end of a voyage, while the crew pumped all the water out of the hold before going ashore. There are several additional verses that speak negatively of the owners and officers of the ship, and the crew is glad to be through with the voyage.
I've been playing this game for 4 days now and this song stuck in my head for the same amount of time... It's by far the best shanty in the entire game!!!
I get the idea of this song being about a ship that the sailors don't want to leave but they know they have to. The parts when they complain about the ship just seems like a way to justify leaving but the tone says they don't wanna leave.
The day after i left my wife of 3 years i bought this game and heard this song brought tears to my eyes the emotion of this song is exactly the feeling i had after finally leaving her after all those years of sadness and regret.
Chris Martin Well, in that case, that is pretty stupid and rather insulting to the source material. Shanties were mid 19th century work songs, not sung by drunken rabbles.
Abiezer Coppe If true it was probably done as a way to add natural imperfections since they need clean studio-recordings but didn't want it to sound like a choir in a studio. They aren't supposed to sound like musicians but like people singing while doing other things and with varying degree of musical talent. Also like rowdy pirates and not strict navy men.
there was something about this game that made me keep coming back. i beat this game on the Xbox360 and when i got an Xboxone i bought this game beat it again and did all the side missions and lastly got all ship upgrades. such a memorable experience.
I know they are talking about a ship....but omg the feels, I can just imagine a pirate who has been through thick an thin with this ship that they are talking about, and now he has to leave it, it makes me emotional
To the people wondering what the song's about, it's about pumping the last of the water out of the ship after it goes into port, just before you "leave her" in the port.
This song has a mood to it that just makes me addicted. The meaning behind it is sad for a sailor... Is it bad I knew this song before ac4 and I had a nerdgasm when I heard it in game >.>
A few of my buddies and I were singing this exact song in the hangar bay of the USS Abraham Lincoln last deployment. It's sad, indeed, even in this day.
Incorrect. This is about leaving the ship on it's last leg, such as after an extensive battle, it's fucked up and unusable after it. Leave her johnny leave her and how is a girl a tub and no grog allowed with rotten grub? It's no secret meaning. Think about who may have wrote it and then put two and two together.
***** That seemed rather obvious to me, guess I shoulda pointed that out too. alonghaircountryboy That is EXACTLY what it means ^^. Also, "ship"* not boat. xP
I always saw this as a song the buddies would sing to one of their own if he's love struck after a girl who doesn't love him back "the voyage is long, and the winds don't blow"
My favorite song in Rogue, never knew it was in IV since I haven't played it yet. Gotta finish the ACII story and its brothers first. Do not ask me why I played and finished Rogue (and Unity for that matter) before playing ACII-IV...because I don't even know why myself. XD
+Peter Daniels man ... ac4 is one of the best games I've played and enjoyed. the content is huge and for the first time in assassin's creed I managed to get 100% full sync without getting bored doing so
So apparently the singers are Sean Dagher, Nils Brown and Michiel Schrey for anyone who wanted to know. Btw it only took me 2 sec to look it up on itunes, just sayin
These songs were sung by a group of musicians and singers from Montreal called LaNef. I heard them sing this song, and the rest of their repertoire of sailor's songs and shanties last night. They spoke of their contract with Ubisoft. They're fantastic and the packed room loved them. Real men singing their hearts out.
16 hours straight for me... and i'm nowhere near 7% finished with the game! :( This is clearly the most immersive AC game since Ezio's games... I LOVE IT! O_O And the 16 hours isn't just because I'm playing on a slow-ass PC.... but because of the addicting naval battles, and listening to the crew singing!)
1 Lowlands Away 2 Leave Her Johnny Leave Her 3 Drunken Sailor At least for me. I love it when it turns night and I'm in a bit of a foggy area when these songs occur :3
My guess is that the chorus is about when you dock and get on land because the voyage has been long and the winds don't blow meaning that you can't travel and the verses are about when there's a storm and the ship is destroyed?
I heard this when my kittens were ill, and then they died. this song reminds me of them and its just such a damn beautiful song to be associated with them.
It's about the end of a voyage and being paid off (yes, merchant sailors, not pirates). It's a work song that was often used whilst pumping out the bilges just before harbour. The song lists grievances and makes comments about the voyage, pay and the work (yup, 19th century working sailors) and was sung on the last day of the voyage for obvious reasons.
This is what makes the game cool,it makes you feel for Edward and his friends, not the Creed, and even if you didn't felt that you are Edward while playing, you felt that you are part of his crew!
does anybody know who's actually singing this version of Leave Her Johnny ( and Randy Dandy Shantie for that matter) i never seem to find the artist....
It's in all editions, it was on of the trickier ones to get. First you go to the Town center in Nassau by the main tavern, then looking at your map go to the left side towards swampy area (I'm assuming you already found the viewpoint) it should be just above it. Here's to hoping your crew will be singing it soon!
i always liked it when the crew sang this, its a pretty sad song, especially for edward. All those feels man
***** mine already split :(
Supposedly this song was used for timing the pumping out of a sailing ship before the crew left the ship after a voyage was finished. Now-a-days its apparently sung in the British Royal Navy when a ship is decommissioned and the crew is leaving for the last time.
wow. thats a sad song

This shanty always makes me so sad.
why i love it it reminds me of sailing the boat and traveling the amazing game
same here... it's a song that would play when your ship has been set on fire and sinking while your watching from the shore lines
LOL, it's making me happier :)
So many people finds this song sad, yet it makes me excited to go on an adventure.
XIBackstabXI Its surprising that I sang this daily on choir. For that I love this song and can't get it out of my head.
It has an adventurous feel to me as well. :)

My favorite shanty, and it looks like I'm not alone! It's a song about longing. Kinda sad, very contemplative.
ROCKaholic The song is actually a shanty you sing as your sailing is over
A finished adventure
I've been playing this game for 4 days now and this song stuck in my head for the same amount of time... It's by far the best shanty in the entire game!!!
Little things like this that make AC4 my favorite Assasin's Creed
Ohhh memories...
i know ACBF for the win
one of my favorite sea shanty. I always sing this whenever i drive to school. Always motivates me and keeps me awake in the morning.
For a bunch of salts they have an amazing sense of harmony
I don't know why.... but this gives me such sad feelings when I hear this shanty. And a faint memory, I can't really clearly remember
Agree
Hm... maybe you remember your crewmates singing this song via genetic memory...
Where can I find this in AC4? I only have about 3-4 shantys atm.
TheShinyGardevoir I believe it is on Nassau. If not, its in Havanna. Very early in the game, you find it.
Found it in Nassau, thank you very much for your assistance!

The harmonies in this song have to be the best in the game. xD All the others are off-note, though on purpose, don't sound nearly as good as this one.
Chris Martin

They made them sound like it was actually being sung by a crew at the time so it's understandable how only a few songs have good harmonization
So good to listen to... NEVER DELETE!
Just finished a session of AC 4. Hell of a game.
Literally one of the best games ever made.
My favorite shanty
there was something about this game that made me keep coming back. i beat this game on the Xbox360 and when i got an Xboxone i bought this game beat it again and did all the side missions and lastly got all ship upgrades. such a memorable experience.
This song is absolutly beautiful, i always feel a deep power when i heard this voices.
I know they are talking about a ship....but omg the feels, I can just imagine a pirate who has been through thick an thin with this ship that they are talking about, and now he has to leave it, it makes me emotional

I cant handle this song in 1080p....Too many feels
Bagus bsnget
Whats
Just got this in my game can't wait to hear it on the journey :) no fast travel for me
Love sailing when this shanty comes on
They should have played this while Edward was talking to his daughter at the end. It would really fit I think. Who agrees?
Play this with the sound of the ocean rushing in the background - it's pretty damn great.
My favorite seashant is Drunken Sailor, but this comes in close 2nd.
This song has a mood to it that just makes me addicted. The meaning behind it is sad for a sailor... Is it bad I knew this song before ac4 and I had a nerdgasm when I heard it in game >.>

***** Why do you think the song is sad? O.o

Riven, The Exile they also used to call ships "she" not it back in those days
***** That seemed rather obvious to me, guess I shoulda pointed that out too. alonghaircountryboy That is EXACTLY what it means ^^. Also, "ship"* not boat. xP
Incredibly beautiful
the music in games amazes me these days. so good. right up there with red dead. crossing over into Mexico. can I get an amen?
Amen
Who sang the song for AC IV?
Assassins Creed IV is the first great part of the series! So much atmosphere in one game. Leave her, Johnny, leave her!
2016 and still loving this song and game this is my fav song in black flag *tear*
This never gets old
I tear a little bit when I hear this. It would sound great with some violin in the background.
The idea of having them sing while you sail was a great one. Sometime I just sit in the ocean listening to them sing.
Brilliant indeed. It's almost like an 18th century radio, LOL.
This brings back so many memories of this game holy shit mann
I wanna get this again!!!
first heard this in assassin creed black flag its too good
by far the best assassins creed yet
One of my favourites, along with Randy Dandy Shanty and Roll Boys Roll
Is it just me or is this song soooo soothing
this song is so addictive.i cant get it out of my head
The best shanty in the game. And those voices ... so great, so amazing. Love that ...
I always saw this as a song the buddies would sing to one of their own if he's love struck after a girl who doesn't love him back
"the voyage is long, and the winds don't blow"
This shanty is so sad. Also hearing it in rogue adds more feels.
Especially seeing as Shay has left the assasins it rather fitting
I love this shanty
the boys in my school choir sang this.
it was beautiful.
and its been stuck in my head ever since
one of my fave shanties
Best Song of AC IV
You're crashing against the waves and this starts playing... Why you don't use fast travel.
I can't get enough of this song. It's very bittersweet.
My favorite song in Rogue, never knew it was in IV since I haven't played it yet. Gotta finish the ACII story and its brothers first. Do not ask me why I played and finished Rogue (and Unity for that matter) before playing ACII-IV...because I don't even know why myself. XD

I wanna become a sailor when I hear this shanty. The feels get me deep.
Listened to this about 5 times, oh the feels....
It's the most beautiful shanty on Black flag
I was so happy to see this song in assassins creed- I always love hearing this song at my local renaissance faire every year
These songs were sung by a group of musicians and singers from Montreal called LaNef. I heard them sing this song, and the rest of their repertoire of sailor's songs and shanties last night. They spoke of their contract with Ubisoft. They're fantastic and the packed room loved them. Real men singing their hearts out.
The feels are real! I tried to listen to this song doing homework. Don't need to be crying! Best Shanty I must say.
This game is so fucking addictive! played like 10 hours yesterday! :D :D
16 hours straight for me... and i'm nowhere near 7% finished with the game! :( This is clearly the most immersive AC game since Ezio's games... I LOVE IT! O_O
And the 16 hours isn't just because I'm playing on a slow-ass PC.... but because of the addicting naval battles, and listening to the crew singing!)
rkmugen "...most immersive AC game since Ezio's games..." You mean the ONE Game in between that didn't feature Ezio?
rkmugen man... the naval battles are freaking awesome and so much fun! it has tons of things to do i'm like 57% already xD
I know that it's about a ship, but it works fine for breakups too...
i always slowed down the ship when the crews sing this song
I'm addicted to this song :/
Amazing song!!!!! :-) i feel sad when i listen to it because i remember one piece.......when the crew left going Merry :(
Thanks for the upload, I've been looking for this song for a while!
This and Drunken sailor were my Favorite.
Find myself Roaming for like 30 mins doing nothing with this
Easily the best shanty in the game
Hey thanks, yeah that is pretty fun that they did back-up, and it sounds really good so I have no complaints!
Best sea shanty in ac4
i literally never use fast travel just to hear this and a few other shanties
Bang on. The shanties make me want to traverse the game without fast travel. What a game.
For the voyage is long, and the winds don't blow
and it's time for us to leave her...
Riven, The Exile leave her Johnny, leave her...
kryienox Oh, leave her, Johnny leave her...
Best shanty ever
for anyone looking for it in game its in about the middle of nassau
8 people got left by Johnny.
1 Lowlands Away 2 Leave Her Johnny Leave Her 3 Drunken Sailor At least for me. I love it when it turns night and I'm in a bit of a foggy area when these songs occur :3
Going Merry. 'Nuff said.
Another version of this plays in one of the Smithsonian's Museums in Washing DC and you will smile when you hear it ;)
My guess is that the chorus is about when you dock and get on land because the voyage has been long and the winds don't blow meaning that you can't travel and the verses are about when there's a storm and the ship is destroyed?
Brings me back to the shanties we sang in choir a few years back
the more i see and here of AC 4, the more excited i am abt it !
huh, i forgot i made this comment 5 years ago
These shanty's are very well sung. Good on you, AC4!
Whos sing this.. I mean the recordings in the studio, they are fantastic!
Who said only Blacks sung well while working hard ....
I heard this when my kittens were ill, and then they died. this song reminds me of them and its just such a damn beautiful song to be associated with them.
This song is not about leaving a girl. It's about leaving the ship because the wind is gone for too long and they are far away from the shore.
Awsomeness! I wish I could play it right now!
I love it so much ^_^ I wanna sail again
I think too, it's a shame that i haven't got the game yet....
I'm a massive fan of AC
Same here.I love songs like so.
This is what makes the game cool,it makes you feel for Edward and his friends, not the Creed, and even if you didn't felt that you are Edward while playing, you felt that you are part of his crew!
THIS SONG IS SO FUCKING GOOD!!!
Love this shanty, I'm gonna sing it to my future son every night before bed... in hopes that he becomes a pirate lol
Have my full glass of rum, listening to this song, life is is good!
One of my favourites. I enjoyed the game, but the sea shanties have left a lasting impression.
This is bloody beautiful.
does anybody know who's actually singing this version of Leave Her Johnny ( and Randy Dandy Shantie for that matter) i never seem to find the artist....

ROYAL BLOODY NAVY.
AHHH
So far this is my favorite
I love this song its just full with feelins
