Lyrics:
In the afternoon
Yellow curtains drawn
Designed with comfort in mind
Glowering into the night
Feel like letting go
Final resting place
The Housecat knows when it’s time
To enter another phase
But you looked sad
In a reassuring way
And I don’t want to leave
So we can both be the same
In the afternoon
Modern sovereignty
The sunlight stopped coming through
And we lost the game
Brains like nesting dolls
Plotting their escape
The doorman sees you’re alone
He can’t seem to find your name
But you, my friend
Know problems can’t be solved
They don’t understand
That somehow it’s all the same
Relief is like candy
The sweetest kind of love
Who’d guess I’d feel this way?
Like a kid in a candy store.

I like how it goes from 80s goth gloominess to 90s madchester psychedelics. I wonder if that's their future musical direction.
Why define everything by decades... :/ I feel like it's the 2019-2020 thing rn
@@0yael003 it's a fair question as the band has previously put out an album going through music generations/evolution ala congratulations
I wonder if they're gonna take any inspiration from Magic Oneohtrix Point Never. That album is way ahead of its time and if MGMT took cues from that one to mess with our minds even more... My god, fingers crossed.

I want an album in this style so badly it’s insane.
LDA had a few songs like this, but I agree it'd be cool if an entire album had this aesthetic
Preston Rutherford LDA is one of my favorite albums. The title track and when you die had a similar dark psychedelic feeling. Maybe we can get something similar for a whole album or even a concept album like this single, one can only hope.
Hell yes Post Punk/Goth MGMT would be awesome

Hands down my favorite MGMT song and nobody else seems to understand! It's so well done

I personally don’t like this song either, it’s just not my taste in music but I still think the song is good if that makes sense just not for me
Idk, I showed this song to my brother on Spotify and he loved it, but that was also partly bc he was listening to Neon Bible and said it had a similar style
"Brains like nesting dolls, plotting their escape" is such a standout line for me; just beautifully vivid imagery.
wow they're going independent, crazy
took awhile
Brandon Kostrzewa right finally
What??? They always intended it to be that way. Look at their 3rd lp that one was an attempt at being independent. If it hadn't been for Sony or some other record company that took them in then MGMT would have been independent since the start.
good, fuck columbia at this point, Little Dark Age took absolutely forever because of their label.
They started in college thats the secret.
They were always secretly independent lol!!!
This is incredible. MGMT is planting itself as one of the best bands of their generation. Little Dark Age was phenomenal. This song is a fantastic start to whatever is next.

THEY FUCKING DID IT BABY
Yup, I'm old enough to remember that early 80's Gothic New Wave and this really encapsulates some of that feeling. Love it!
MGMT has really been obsessed with the concept of dying as of late
it's because they all died on tour last year
It's complicated.. Lol. I'm sure I. Their personal life, it's not all sunshine as with everyone else. However.. The period we live in is losing it's spirit. The spiritual famine is here. Hence our little dark age. Everything lost it's charm. I think the music is representative of that. Back when we were teen/adults these truths were doubted. We still had that "I'm invincible feeling" yet something was missing. Now as adults we see the strings on the puppet. Learning our dreams are irrelevant if the spirit is lost. The dying you speak of could be the loss of this.. The meaning of life. Or I could be wrong. Their songs always seem to represent dealing with life's changes or lack there of.
Trump 2020
not here, 2020.
Paris Campos “not here, 2020” you love to see it 😂
Probably the best MGMT song for me
It's so sad how their thoughtful, unique, truly artistic music doesn't really get any attention, while the songs they made only to mock the pop industry became extremely popular
Maybe it doesn't get attention on a broad popular level, but I mean two million people have seen this and it has almost ten million plays on Spotify alone, which I'm sure both will increase in time.
A smaller fanbase is always better than a bigger fanbase
They have a such a cool musical style! God bless 💓
They have enough of a dedicated fan base that it appears they can now do it independent, support themselves, and continue to make this amazing music. I'm honestly really happy for them. A lot of musicians or other artists that really do their own thing tend to struggle to survive.
@@thaliarice3891 but in time they get so many popularity, one of their songs have been a meme, and some songs have 100 millions of views, what else they need to be more popular? they are in a perfect point of pouplarity and their actual music is as good as the olders of the band

It’s genuinely probably one of their best songs.
Mgmt has transcended
Well, somebody has been revisiting The Cure lately.
Absolutely!
That’s what I thought about the video for Little Dark Age, now this has concreted the Cure aesthetic.
A bit sisters of mercy and Echo bunnymen ...
Did you listen to their last album? The whole thing was a massive homage to 80s goth.
This is exactly what I thought
MGMT just keeps getting better and better as time goes on, like a fine wine.
To me this perfectly catches the flux of depression. When twinklings of peace and joy emerge with spiritual potency only to pass into echoes again, and after it's been circled through enough times even bliss feels transparent, with dark emptiness sighing behind it. How a song says all that without saying it is incredible.
Listening to the song while reading comments gives me vibe like we are listening together at the party or somewhere

Emm this dont look gothic
Quite Bauhaus,The Cure etc
@@aquilesvicente26 You don't know shit. This is what true post-punk/gothic music sounded like in the 80s/early 90s. We're talking about bands like The Chameleons, The Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, The Cure, The Sound, The Bunnymen. I could go on forever, you get the point. Honestly man, it's not about the image it's about the soundscapes and mood the music sets that makes it "gothic". That shit just got out of proportion in the 90s with dudes like Marylin Manson (who were actual garbage musically) that people now associate with "Gothic"
