    • @MathIsMurder
      @MathIsMurder 5 лет назад +173

I think it's very healthy. Acceptance is the first step to healing. You gonna be alright. Heaven and Hell are all right here right now. Drugs, meditation, all that jazz leads you to roughly the same point at different speeds hopefully. Soon enough you'll realize your action in the immediate here and now is ultimately all you have control over in this crazy roller coaster we call life, and that they ripple outward like a stone in the pool that is our here and now.So understandably, killing yourself can be a tantalizing thing when you feel nothing matters. But cheesy as it may be, everything you do has a value greater than 0. You may not feel as though you are a 1, but you are. Infinite and nothing all at once. You have the potential, you have something no one else in your immediate space can provide. You may not see it, but others do. It might be something as small as making the best fucking brownies out of anyone you know, but goddamit you're buddies would miss those brownies more than you can ever realize. Once you realize how even the tiniest effect you have on others around you and how much of an effect even saying something nice to someone can have, it seems meaningless to kill yourself as well, and thus you are free. Nothing matters except everything. Hug your cat, eat some good food, smoke a bowl, do whatever you do, but push yourself to the positive. Do constructive things, stay away from negative people and thought patterns. This kind of music does have a negative effect if it's all you listen to (I've been on a DIIV and sadboi music kick myself), but in total it's a positive gain when can make time to reflect and not ruminate. Become a successful failure. Through your stumbles you are greater than those who have never faltered if you allow yourself.

    Story of the video:
00:00 - dude wakes up, eats breakfast and goes to work - he performs magic at a bar
00:52 - the audience are concerned, a spark appears above the dude's head
00:57 - his life flashes before his eyes. Or at least, everything he has done today
01:34 - it turns out the spark was a result of the stage light collapsing. It lands on his head, causing a near death experience. DMT is released in his brain, causing hallucinations.
02:05 - he wakes up in the hospital, barely in touch with reality. He has further hallucinations where people, patterns and behaviours relating to his day are coexisting.
03:13 - this part is really open to interpretation. The hallucinations relate to blood, skeletons and a possible representation of hell. This is followed by dissolution, suggesting he has died.
Just wanted to put my thoughts out there!

I agree but I also think that the wife staged the death and hired the guy with the toothpick to set the light up to fall and his last hallucination of his wife is him realizing that she staged his death. "Dont you got somewhere to be at 730, I've got some work to do" meaning set up your death and the lyrics are her singing to him that she will laugh when he dies, shes not that nice, go fuck yourself, and she will eat your heart out

for example, back when Oracular came out & they were getting a lot of radio play, a lot of critics snubbed them as being “alright for a radio-pop band”. then when Congrats came out, they said they were trying too hard to be artsy/contrarian. & for their S/T, suddenly the narrative became “they should have stayed a pop band, they were amazing as a pop band”

The songs melody changed and settled down becoming almost comforting but then you hear that original melody slip back in thats reminiscent of when you’re tripping and you think its over but then you start noticing things moving again so you realize you’re still very far down the rabbit hole. When the woman says "eat your heart out" and the background becomes a sort of arterial web of soft tissue, then that pattern of skulls flashes in front of your eyes. That is ABSOLUTELY what the beginnings of a bad trip look like. It's this sort of awareness and paranoia about what most of your body is actually made of. You just start to feel gross.

This video was uploaded 4 days after I got hit by a car for the first time. The car was going 35 mph and caused me to go flying around 12 feet away, I ragdolled through the air, and my left shoe flew off. I was able to get right back up after I hit the ground, and the worst injury I got from that accident was a scrape on my left wrist. The doctor at the hospital told me that I was really lucky, and ever since then, I've felt like I either should have died, or I actually did die but was somehow transported to an alternate universe where I survived with the least amount of injury.
I only really got into this album last month, but if I had watched this the day it was uploaded, I would have been convinced that I had actually died 4 days earlier, and this song was the universe's way of making fun of me for dying. 2 and a half years later, it vaguely seems that way. It just adds to the depth of this song for me, and makes me love it and appreciate it more in a strange way.

This album just came out and my mental health was at its lowest, somehow I believed that being paid so low and treated so horribly by my boss was all I deserved. And then this song? Junkers maybe something along the lines of how the monotony of the same tasks that you do in everyday life, that you don’t really think about while doing, end up influencing who and what you are more than you realize. For example the first morning he wakes he reaches in the blue loops cereal to eat, the second day he does the same but it is caught from a different angle. Then when he ‘dies’ there is that scene where everything is made of the blue loops cereal. And there’s also the scene where everything is covered in eyeballs, which references the eyeball on his keychain, which he picked up each day when going to perform

It almost seems like the guy performs and his wife is there to support him. When the light fixture falls and hits him in the head and kills him.
Then he gets stuck in a time loop, almost as though he has to continue living through the same shit.
      Like a "purgatory" or something.
Maybe I'm reading to much into it, but also when only a part of his eye drops, it's almost like saying half of him was already dead anyways.
This sums up to me, 'you live, you die. So go smoke and get high'

    • @taurusthefool
      @taurusthefool 7 лет назад +18

Almost seems too that after he's dead "which you can tell when he dies.. by how everything goes from "reality" to "unrealistic" Everyone there seems to move on without the guy, like his life didn't necessarily have a deep impact on any of them.
As if they all kept going through the motions of living. This really showcases how small that we all are in retrospect.

I want to make a video edit with all the material. It feels incredibly good to see how everything turns small and insignificant as you hear 2:05 start. it feels like touching the clouds.

I don't think the "I'm not that nice" part is being narrated by the magician like most seem to assume. The lyrics have multiple narrators/characters saying things (both in regards to the video and just the song itself)
The magician seems pretty genuine and nice, both in his magical displays and when he claps for the woman at the end, so I was confused at first. But after watching the whole thing a bunch of times, I think it's *her* that's "not that nice." At the end, when she turns into a monster, he's realizing what she is. She's mean and she's evil, and is going to eat his heart out, like she's seen saying to him.
He also wakes up at 7:08 while she's still sleeping, so the "don't you have somewhere to be at 7:30" seems like something that she'd be saying to him and not vice versa. He's the one waking up early at 7:08 and rushing out the door for where he has to be. So again, something in the lyrics that she's the one saying and not him.
The only parts I think are "narrated" by him for sure are the "Baby, I'm ready, I'm ready, ready, ready to blow my lid off" and "Baby, I’m ready, I'm ready, ready, ready to blow my brains out" - which he says right before a 3rd person narrator comes in saying "You died..." etc.
They're kind of like fragments of an argument being remembered by him.
On a related note, you'd think out of everyone in the crowd, she'd be supportive and enthusiastic, but instead she looks disinterested and apathetic. She claps and patronizes him a little bit for his acts, which he does with genuine enthusiasm, but she doesn't seem to really care or think much of it. It kind of seems like a metaphor for relationships where similar things happen.
Just because you sing "I'm not that nice" doesn't mean you're talking about yourself, I think it's talking about her.
It's a little more abstract, but that's my own interpretation of it - which no doubt is shaped by my own personal experiences. There's a lot of ways to interpret and relate to the music & video, which is part of what makes it so good. : )

I think you're right. To me this video is about someone who wasted his life trying to amuse people who thought nothing of him. He wanted their adoration, and they mocked him for it. In the end he dies a meaningless death, his brain flooded with chemicals leading to one last trip. On this trip he sees the universe for what it is. What his life was, and his final revelation being that the woman he cared for will hardly be affected by his death. She only used him for what ever role he served in their relationship. Essentially cannibalizing him. He dies and is added to a mass grave where all of us will join. His horror serving no substantial purpose, as though his life was ultimately a personal hell. Forever buried and forgotten in a sea of lives like his.

The second part of the video is a loop of the first part... it looks like he’s rummaging through the most vivid parts of his memory, which would be the last day he experienced.. so he experiences it in a more and more distorted way. Until he no longer has the mental capacity to remember anything or understand his situation. His wife, his most emotionally powerful and recognizable entity comes into fruition but not in a pleasant way. Probably because he’s clinging on to consciousness harder than he should be. This is apparent because he observes as much as he can until it blurs and blacks out. He probably should have just let go.. but maybe his mind wasn’t at peace enough to do so.. what a horrible death.. I don’t know how I feel about this song. What I do know is that it’s stuck in my head. Dammit MGMT what have you done. This is like a death video except you get to look inside someone’s mind as it happens. A whole new level of gruesome.. and people who truly have had bad trips or ptsd of some sort like myself will be horribly triggered by something like this.. I still love MGMT though and I’m glad they push the boundaries of art so much to come up with this horribly beautiful piece

For me the lyrics of this song are soooo amazingly written and I interpret them in a very perticular way. The not wanting to be percieved as the nice guy and doing some nasty things in order to change that perception, as well as being fed up with friends who don't realy care about you and always "have somewhere to be at 7.30" or "have some work to do" so they blow you off. And finally the death of your old self portrayed by the gunshot happening right before the chorus kick in and the words "you die". Also how at this point music presents this sense of a relief in the melody and the harmonies, because the version of yourself that you hated and that was making you miserable has died. You told these toxic friends to go fuck themselves, you are no longer leting them push you around and disrespect you. And those one liners that are so simple but hit so hard like "I'm not that nice", "go fuck yourself", those words that you always scream inside but are afraid to say out loudd. Goddamn this song has so many great ideas executed in such a fantastic way and on top of that is so relatable, I fucking love it.

A valid "NDE" traditionally is defined by the medical research community involves "physical death / patient declared legally dead including the absence of heartbeat or brainwave activity for a period of time exceeding 10 seconds where the patient claims to have a subjective experience despite lack of life sustaining heartbeat or brainwave activity, after which the patient is revived either through medical intervention or spontaneously by return of pulse, and has recall of this experience"... Though it isn't proven DMT is released "when you die", I fully relate to this video from about 3 years ago. I was smoking (what I was told was weed) with some people I didn't know and fell off the tower base I was sitting on. (I didn't know that I fell off until they told me the next day). I was sent into a trip of repeating visuals including them looking over me (like shown in the video) and repeating things that didn't help like "you're here now" "its okay" and the world and night sky around me shifting the same way it did for him in the video as he fell. The ground around me began to appear as skulls and faces that wanted to pull me in. I'm still not entirely sure I didn't die that day because I had repeated visuals for months after and dissassociation for even longer. Therapy didn't help and I'm still not always entirely sure I'm actually alive right now. This video is INCREDIBLY accurate in it's visuals for an ego death and even possibly a real death. Another commenter stated something similar but it feels like this video is fucking with me and I'm about to be sent into the loop again. I'm constantly worried of being sent into that loop again and my head is spinning as I type this. I haven't had such intense feelings towards my ego death until watching this incredible video for a very, very long time. Oh but I wanted to mention, maybe it isn't the death that releases the DMT visuals, but head trauma. It's almost like you're literally seeing stars. I fell off what I was sitting on, and that thing hit the actor in the head. I like to think I'm not living in a fake world, or at least one created by my own straggling mind and spirit. Even if I'm not alive, I like to think that I'm having a good time :) but man this video shook me up, I WAS NOT ready at all.

Ya dawg, you just commented on youtube, dead folks don't do that. You are VERY MUCH ALIVE but just stuck in a bad headspace on trip-loop and you CAN get out of that. You just need to start affirming this every morning. Wake up, look in the mirror, see your face, feel your heartbeat and say "yep, still alive"... One day you actually WILL be dead and not just a kid who had a bad trip on some fucked up salvia or dmt people gave you. Honestly, if I had to guess, they may have given you some sherm which is weed with PCP on it, used to be very popular in the ghetto. PCP is a TERRIFYING trip and lasts a long time, also its a strong disassociative so that makes sense. I'd say in order of likelihood (also depending where you were) if they were poor kids, probably PCP (angel dust) and if they were middle class or rich kids, either DMT or salvia. But salvia and DMT both only last a little while... so if you were tripped out for hours as you say, probably smoked some PCP my guy.
Bottom line though, you're just in a paranoid headspace, you are INDEED alive and experiencing things so there ya go. If there is an afterlife, Im pretty sure we know it for sure when we get there.

@2:33 parts removed and given to doctor
@2:42 arms folded, medical practitioners performing the Ritual of Honor for an organ donee out of respect for their sacrifice
@3:00 late stages of his brain death now, things stop making sense, thought loop over his last actions but they are strongly hypnagogic and psychadelic in nature as brain has no oxygen
@3:06 everything jumbled up now, a man in the audience is now pouring the cereal he had for breakfast
@3:16 he sees his loved ones for a final time - body completely still and unmoving
@3:24 final surge of adrenaline, possibly during agonal breathing stages, a final desperate reflex to stay alive, causing panic and fear
@3:33 realisation of death sets in
@3:43 bloody brain imagery metaphoric of subarachnoid hemorrhage as a result of the light falling on him
@4:07 fade to black, death, thoughts restart again at @0.00 again and he repeats the loop once more, over and over forever

      Two caveats,
      1. It is also posited online that when you die you tend to relive memories as your brain becomes more oxygen deprived I believe as you mentioned. Moreover the real question I am left with is what does that time perception feel like? If it takes 7 minutes or so for the brain to completely expend all oxygen, how long until you fade to black?
      2. The look of excitement of the magicians face for his wife is completely crushing (noted by the ring on his finger), his consciousness realizing some semblance of normal and familiarity - hence why he claps so happily at the sight of her. But he realizes either in fear or shock that he is dead when she transforms into a mass of grey matter spewing blood like a hemorrhage - as if his consciousness finally connected the dots and is telling him is wrong. Tragic ending.

Well, you dont exactly pop DMT. But also everyone will experience it at least once (the end) in your life. Your brain stores this, smoking DMT triggers a release of it. However it's just the tip of the iceberg, we wont know exactly how much floods our brain till our inevitable end.

The entire video is a dying mind replaying its last memories over and over because it doesn't want to die. It's clinging onto life. Here's why I think that.
The first 6 seconds you hear the first syllable to "hey" on repeat a bunch of times, getting more and more distorted each loop. This represents the previous loops the mind has already been on. It gets more distorted cuz memories are degrading in quality due to..dying.
So then it starts a loop with that radio-sounding "Hey!" and you see the guy wake up. By now the memories are already very distorted and it's why things seem...off. And it's why the sound is so weird, too. But the guy singing can still pronounce his W's and V's. This is important later on. So then a pop is heard at the end.
A new cycle begins. The audio is slightly more distorted. This time, instead of a pop, you hear a gunshot. This represents the fact that he dies on the loop where he can't pronounce W's and V's anymore. There was a word for that (something like a lisp?) but I forgot. But the thing is, it's the loop after that where the mind starts to degrade HARD.
But before that, they play the "When You Die" song thingy, which is not part of the "story" of the music video. It's just to set the tone and to ease you into the concept of him dying, maybe?
Also they replace the first "when" with the gunshot sound (so they only sing "you die") as symbolism to show that that's gonna be the last loop where he dies.
Then you see doctors in a trippy way. His mind is focused on observing as much as it can to try and hold on to life.
But then it can't do that anymore and it goes into farther memories. But by that point it's already so close to death that everything is extremely distorted.
This is also when they switch back to the very distorted lyrics, and it sounds way more alien after hearing the bit with the normal voices.
Then with the "I'm gonna eat your heart out" is where it really can't hold on anymore and it's slowly fading away until it dies and the video ends.

I think the song isnt exactly about dying literally but an ego death from taking too many psychedelics and then realizing that its a trap. Thats why at first hes really enjoying it until the woman (who represents the drugs) says shes gonna eat his heart out. He realizes hes fallen into the trap and lost his mind like others before him. Thats why when it zooms in on her face the landscape is made up of skulls.

Cool. I like this music video. It contains aspects of a psychedelic trip all put together to form a representation of one. Here's some exceptional details that I've noticed:
    - 00:07 Rainbow vision/light halos
    - 00:16 Orientation distortion
    - 00:37 Enhanced confidence - feels like you want to announce yourself to the whole world and you're front and center of the universe
    - 00:49 Strange actions - you end up doing things that appear strange and unusual
    - 00:53 Distorted faces
    - 00:56 Snapping back to reality from zoning out, triggered by cue
    - 01:00 Enhanced patterns and colors
    - 01:03 Repeating actions - stuck in a loop (doing things or thinking things over and over again
    - 01:30 Intrusive thoughts - off-putting or downright terrifying thoughts
    - 01:38 Floating
    - 01:39 Color morphing
    - 02:05 Ego death - profound feeling of being at peace - some say is comparable to dying
    - 02:40 Peak - full body disintegration
    - 03:10 Vision becomes pure visuals
    - 03:24 Trigger - dramatic and unexpected change of set and/or setting
    - 03:32 Skulls - appears when your mind is in distress
    - 03:45 Faces appearing in everything you look at
