My father in law always invited me and my husband out, and offered to pay. He liked this place where EVERYTHING was pretty expensive, which was hell for me, because there WAS NO CHEAP OPTION!!! I was super close to just going with the kids' menu...! Iknow he has a lot of money: he's a doctor who paid no child support for 3 children, has a house, an appartment in the middle of the capital, a hut, a boat, and gives his kids early inheritance money to avoid the wealth tax... but I still just can't not feel guilty when he buys me expensive food 😓

Right I was at a celebration dinner and my 3 kids and I totaled 40 ish because I knew I didn’t want to spend much but when the check came everyone was like yea split it I had to pay $84 🫣
I've seen it the other way as well; someone ordering the most expensive things while knowing they can't afford it unless the force everyone else to split it

I make more than than my friends. When we go out, I let them choose the restaurant. They always choose a restaurant they can afford. I often pay. I don't mind it at all.
@@phoenixjames9762 that doesn't sound like good friends, but maybe they are simply unaware of it being a problem for you? Have you tried to talk? When someone earns a bit more, they often stop seeing prices in such small scape as something troublesome, and might see splitting as a convenience regardless if they have to pay more or less than they actually ordered/have eaten, and they might assume it's the same for you. If they know and refuse to accommodate you, that's a bit shitty.

When I was 33, a lifelong friend of mine turned 35 and was planning her birthday celebration - a cruise that cost over $3,000 per person.
She was deeply offended when I declined to join her, saying, “I can’t believe you’re not coming to my birthday party. You can afford it better than anyone! You’re literally the only person I know who owns a house.”
I said, “that’s because I don’t spend $3,000 to celebrate someone else’s birthday.”
It’s been 12 years and she never spoke to me again.

I remember visiting Mumbai with my uncle some time ago. There was a restaurant where we decided to have dinner. Meanwhile we got refreshed at lavatory and before the waiter could attend us, we had a look at the menu. And we were literally shocked to see the prices in there. A tandoor roti for 80 RUPEES. A normal butter chicken for 2-person portion for 680 rupees. 5 mutton kebabs for 600 rupees. I was kind of struck because we already had used the washrooms and been sitting on table for almost 5 mins. The manager at the counter already had seen us. But my uncle didn't flinch. After going through the menu, he just stood up and asked me to come along, and we started to leave the restaurant. After we left, I asked him, isn't it embarrassing to leave like that, and then he said something I will never forget. "Never be ashamed of what you can afford. The money we spend on things is very hard earned and to spend it just to save yourself from embarrassment is not worth at all." And then we went to another restaurant and had a very sumptuous meal for just 390 rupees which filled every part of our stomach.

I worked in banking for nearly two decades and I got to witness first-hand how people manage (mismanage) their finances. It made me feel pretty good about my financial situation and the way that I handled my money.

NEVER BE ASHAMED TO ASK MARKET PRICE. As a chef, depending on the item, it will vary incredibly and we can't update the menu every time. But even we are sometimes like "I am supposed to price this at HOW MUCH per portion compared to last month?"

Have been in situations before in both ends. Used to be the poor friend and now the rich friend. I was honest back in the day when I cannot afford anything. It was so embarrassing and I was sometimes bullied. But yet I was upfront about something if I cannot afford it. It saved me a lot of financial issues. Now even though I can afford I always listen to others and try to accomodate. If there is something I really wanted I opt for paying it all by my self so everyone can take part of it without feeling bad. Same thing I did with my wedding. Paid everything for the bridesmaids. Provided travel to destination for everyone and for some their wedding guest attire too. Since it is my wedding so why would anyone be pressurized about it

A simple, "I don't think that would work for me financially" is a very powerful statement because it shows that you're not embarrassed of your finances and that you don't care what others think because you value your own boundaries.

This is so lifelike that I almost forgot this was a skit. In a group of men, a guy would NEVER let it come up if he knew his friend struggled. He'd just tell the waiter to put them on a check together and pick up his tab.
Yea, I'm not made of money. But every now and then (especially before convid), I would just wait for everyone to finish ordering, and then pick it all up at the end. They can bitch, grunt, and whale all they want, but in the end, they know they want to man hug me. I'll just settle for the medium chest punch, and go about the day.

One of the perks of my job is that when I work overtime, instead of being paid, we get to order takeout on the company card. I have a little game where I try to get as close to the limit as I can, often getting lunch for the next day, extra sides or desserts. It's great because I had a fiscally responsible parent who never let us waste money on certain items that I can get just because now. Weekends are my favorite because the limit is higher and I can order the best steaks or foreign cuisine.
We all have great ideas when money is not a problem

Dude, being poor is not good. I was poor, signed up for an 8 week improv class, and we went to dinner in a restaurant which I couldn't afford to eat at. I asked someone for their leftovers and they gave me their leftovers but I felt such a crap vibe from the situation. Btw, I was the most talented performer in the class, and I saw many people from the class go on to accomplish stuff with television and getting articles and publicity and getting projects off the ground. Meanwhile I had no money to start up my own projects, so I relied on some sketchy unethical people to work with me. It resulted in me doing a tonne of work, not getting acknowledged or paid, and feeling a general sense of despair about the world.

I CAN'T drink alcohol due to medical issues, but I have been at a table with other people who ordered expensive cocktails and very expensive wine, who were quick to say "split the check evenly". I did it a few times, but no more. Now I say "I will pay for what I got." Of course then the others act like I am being cheap or like I am the asshole in the deal.

There was this episode in friends where they highlighted the broke dynamic with Phoebe and Joe being their broke selves at the restaurant and after losing lots of money just to be with my friends, I had to distance myself and only go hand out in each other's houses (I contributed with home cooked food) and keeping in touch by phone. I'm better off financially and now able to afford a brunch with the girls without wondering how I'll survive during the week.

I had two friends, a couple. One day we wanted to double date at dinner but I wanted to go somewhere affordable. They kept insisting they wanted to go to an expensive restaurant but finally we settled on affordable. When our separate checks came my boyfriend and I were definitely pleased and satisfied with the good but inexpensive meal.
Then they both turn to us holding their own check and asked if we were not paying for their meals. We were like no, why would you think that? We literally never said anything of the sort. They looked miserable and said we dont have the money to pay. My boyfriend and I were like ummm no we aren't buying your food. After a second it sank in that they wanted us to literally treat them both to an expensive meal at a high end restaurant. They had not bothered to mention that they fully expected we would be paying for our meal AND theirs.
We laughed it off but never went to eat with them again. The absolutely audacity was pretty shocking. We did however get better friends. Havent seen those two jerks in years.

Had a group of friends like this, and while I made the least out of everyone, I could still afford what they can afford, it's just that what they preferred to spend their money on aren't in-line with what I preferred. For an example, they'd rather spend at a beach club while with the same amount of money, I could spend on renting a nice villa/hotel room that even comes with free breakfast, or I could spend the same amount scuba diving. Eventually, I got tired with this group and just spent more time with another friends who shared the same preference.
