- Yew warbow. Part II. Beginner bowyer attempts to make a 100lb warbow. The famous English yew longbow of medieval times was an awesome weapon of war - and I am chronicling my attempt to make a replica of a medieval warbow from a stave of yew. This third video shows the part-finished bow and follows me as I remove temporary string nocks and fit horn replacements, make a Flemish-twist string, brace the bow and working it on the tiller. But I get tiller-blind and struggle to see the shape correctly - so I close the video when I get the bow to 20" draw at about 86lbs. My wish is to make a bow that is similar in power to artillery bows used in the famous battles of Crecy, Poitiers and Agincourt during the One Hundred Years War - a bow that requires at least 100lbs of pull to fully draw back the bowstring. I am an inexperienced bowyer with just five bows' experience so the challenge seems immense so do join me for the rest of this short series to see if I can achieve my aim to build a 100lb war bow.

Nice nocks (more info?). The bow looks quite authentic now - like the ones off the Henry VIII's Mary Rose in Portsmouth.
Coming along nicely, but you are in danger of falling into the old trap!
If you want 110# you have to pull it to 110#. That's one of the reasons you can't see any problems in the tiller, you are not fully stressing it. If you keep pulling it to 80# you'll end up with an 80# bow!
Now it's braced you are 90% there... you'll have to pull it to 110 at some point... so go for it, but keeping an eye on the tiller as you pull it back. Alternatively get a helper to call out the poundage as you watch the tiller. There are varying views, some people take a bow straight to full draw, which is fine if it has no problems... better to exercise it and keep pulling it full weight as it slowly comes back IMO.
PS... Don't pull that nice summer house down! ;-)
Hello Del - thanks, I guess that's the push I need and what you suggest will be what I do next. I assume if I pull 110 at - say - 30" I'm okay to work a little wood off to get it back to to 110# @ 32"? All a bit scary! And as for the summer house, I pulled the verandah off when tillering the 80lb+ hazel so there are now some discrete strengtheners on there! Thanks again, appreciated. Mick
I had another look and I see you did get it to about 96#. So not far off, beware of taking too much off the middle, as there is a lot of leverage there. I'd say maybe outer 1/3 of left limb could flex a tad more? Look for a big dial fishing scale they are pretty cheap and easier to read... much more easy to maintain (when they fall on the floor) and adjustable too. That's a lovely clean stave... pulling to 110 shouldn't be a prob, but I know how you feel... I've only just plucked up courage to pull a knotty Yew bow to 27".
If you are 110# at 30, you are near as dammit there, it will settle in an inch or two no prob, and a bit of tidying up the tips and sanding will get you there. Current bow I'm doing is aiming for 60# at 28". I'm calling it done at 60# @ 27", by the time it's shot in, sanded etc... it will be there. Mind it's impossible to weigh 'em accurately. 5# tolerance minimum is close enough.

I didn’t work strictly to dimensions. But it was about 77 inches long and 1.75 inches at grip

Hi there Gilberto! Thanks for the compliment 😀 I bought the horn nocks and reshaped them - I didn't make them myself. They are available on eBay in the UK (maybe elsewhere?). I'll be fitting horn nocks to the hazel bow I am making currently (on my channel). Thanks for watching. Mick

Dear Mick, sorry to be a pest! But what were the approximate dimensions on this bow tips before you installed the nocks?
Hello Gilberto! You are not a pest - but I am sorry for delay in answering, been away from the computer a while. The end of the bow was worked down to about 14mm x 14mm. Then I tapered the tips to a point (as on the video) and then fitted the nocks. Someone said I should have tapered longer than I did (about 25mm taper) but so far they are fine and secure. I have one question is that a dacron or some other bowstring material thanks in advance
Hi there, I used Dacron B50 as the first string but it stretched too much. I changed to Fast Flight and strung the bow with that and it remains strung with it today. I have found that Dacron is okay up to about 80lbs, after that I used FF. Thanks for watching. Atb, Mick

Hello, I have no experience of ossage - though I know that it makes excellent bows. I am not sure though whether it is suitable for a D or elliptical profile bows - maybe some research on US web sites. Look for John Riggs on RUclips ruclips.net/channel/UC1jzn7gh3MclnWHYzEHYcvw he is in the US and makes primitive bows. Dont reduce the bow down! Instead go to the gym and workout your arms
