Had similar problems doc, got up to zoplicone/zoplidem, Via melatonin and promethazine, the antihistamine.
The Z's are ok once every few months if I really need them, but I found breathing exercises (initially through a mindfulness app) actually works better than the Z's on top of the melatonin and promethazine.
Eat healthy food, take some vit D and K2, some sunlight early, try to relax and I hope you are passed this problem soon, magnesium also helps me a little I think ❤️🙏

I took it on and off for the through the 1990s to mid-2000. I found the recommended dosage and the time to take it has changed dramatically over the years. I never saw any improvement in my sleep - either falling asleep, staying asleep, of feeling rested. The last form I took was the time-released. Saw a study stating even name brand supplements had false claims of dosage/ingredients, and finally said "enough". I decided to follow the "sleep hygiene" guidance I had been teaching my patients (mental health):
Go to bed/awaken at the same time 7 days a week. Get lots of light/sun during the day, turn down lights starting at 7pm, no TV, computers, phones, i.e, blue lights 1 hour before going to sleep. Use only night lights - never turn on a light if you must get out of bed. Cold, dark room. If you are hot in bed, less/no clothes, fewer blankets. This works for me. I have not needed an alarm to wake up since 2010.

@stephaniehyatt. Great advice. However, all light bulbs have LED in them nowadays that make them very bright. I looked on Amazon for night lights and even those have LED in them. This is a terrible situation!
I don’t turn on the light in the bathroom if I have to go to in the middle of the night, I leave the door open.

64 year old here. I’ve taken Melatonin for over 30 years. I had a major health crisis at that time and the hospital had me on sleeping tablets. My family doctor suggested Melatonin because he knew I didn’t want to take sleeping meds and we were about to travel to Asia for a holiday and could buy a supply there as it wasn’t available in Australia at that time. Over the years I’ve slowly increased up to 10mg. I sleep very well, have very few dreams and usually don’t remember them upon waking. As soon as I open the shutters in the morning and expose my eyes to sunlight all signs of sleepiness disappear. I have noticed no side effects.

I've always been a night person. I must have inherited this from my mother since she was a night person too.
I can be awake all night with no issues except I worked during the day.
I've worked for 50 years and I have always had trouble going to sleep. I started taking melatonin so I could get more than 4 hours of sleep.
I started with 5 mg and went to 10 mg. It was the only way I could get enough sleep so I could get up and go to work.
I had no issues taking it and wasn't groggy during the day.
I'm retired now and I don't take it anymore. I also don't sleep much during the night.
My body has never been in tune with night or day. Since I'm retired, I sleep when I feel like it and I'm awake the rest of the time.
If I have to get up early, I'll stay awake most of the night. I'm retired, I can sleep when I feel like sleeping.😊
They say that older people don't need as much sleep. I don't know if that's true because I've had trouble sleeping my entire life.

I started taking melatonin 5mg at age 75, it worked well and I increased dose slowly to 20mg. It did cause me to have dreams that I remembered and that was nice. After a while when I went for a checkup, my blood pressure had gone way up 160/80. My doc gave another BP Med and that didn’t help. Finally I did my research and found that melatonin does nullify certain BP meds. I was taking losartan ( an ARB). My Doc was unaware of this side effect! Be careful when starting any new supplements or drugs and be on the alert to any changes to your health. Melatonin is generally safe for healthy people even in larger doses.

I am 73. For the last 6 or 8 years I have had a terrible time getting a good night's sleep. Sometimes it has been initially falling asleep, sometimes falling back to sleep after getting up and taking a whiz in the night. I'll average about 5 hours of sleep with about 9 hours in bed. Then about 6 months ago I started taking time-release melatonin. I think it is a total of 9 mg which is a pretty big hit. My sleep has been much better. There are still the occasional 6 hours of sleep a night, but generally the sleep has been pretty good with about 9 hours in bed for 7 to 8 hours of sleep. I think the dreaming might be a little more vivid. But the dreams have generally been pretty entertaining, so that's not all bad.

I think, as far as it being the jet leg helping remedy, it can be all right for that. I don't think it's something that's Comforting or even useful to use every single bae. I invite everybody that reads my little blurb here to listen to the gentleman. I trust them and don't walk into a health food store. Buy one of everything and take it home and consume it. It's considered medicine in some ways. And you wouldn't walk into a pharmacy and buy one of everything and take it. God bless you all from Bakersfield, California, USA.

The BEST thing I did to recover was to get rid of my alarm. Also, the phone is nowhere near the bed and I use ear plugs. I use melatonin, but I don't think it does anything either way. But sleep became a priority for me so I do whatever I can. I regularly go to bed at 10:30 and get up at about 6 AM. I have never slept late. My best sleep trick is get rid of your alarm. Then I read that taking 2 to 4 pistachios before bed time also help releasing melatonin. I have been doing for over a year & it works just like taking melatonin. Note, I do follow all your sleeping hygiene tips.

Melatonin formulations vary and you have to find one that works, while minimizing side effects. For me brain fog the next day was a problem. Once adjusted, it's like the Dr's say, only to reset, not continued use. I am 73 years old and it works for me, if used responsibly.

I’m a 71 year old man, healthy and slim and active. I occasionally take one mg of melatonin when I’m in bed and ready to turn off the lights and want to sleep.
The melatonin works very fast, within 5 minutes I’m drifting off to sleep. I sleep very soundly and dream profusely when taking melatonin. The only side effects are dry eyes in the morning and a bit of grogginess when I get up, but that’s ok because I get a sound sleep with melatonin; but without melatonin I often wake up at 2am and I’m wide awake and can’t get back to sleep.

I tried a bottle once, which I bought from Amazon. I think it worked somewhat, but it did not make a dramatic difference. I found that listening to political talk shows made me fall asleep a lot more effectively; doing a lot of physical exercises and making you really tired is also more effective than taking the Melatonin.

Good information!! Dosage very important. I was having trouble sleeping a few years ago and bought some. It was 5mg caps. I felt so drugged in the morning I threw the bottle out. Then lately I've started waking up around 2:30 or 3:00 a.m. and I can't go back to sleep for hours (I usually read until about midnight) so decided to try it again and bought some that were 3 mg. I broke open the caps took about half of it before bed - right before because I have no problem going to sleep and it does help quite a bit. Instead of 2:30 or 3 I sleep until about 6 then if I have to use the restroom I can go back to sleep for an hour or two with no problem. I don't intend to take it forever but I'll stick to that method for a few more days then try it without.

I took a low dose of melatonin in my early 50s (56 now) to try to improve my sleep. I've had insomnia since about age 10, which has steadily gotten worse over the years. It didn't help at all, possibly because the dose was too low, but it absolutely changed my mood and personality in that it basically took my personality away, as well as my libido. I felt like a zombie, just flat and uninterested in everything, like I almost wasn't even here. As soon as I stopped taking it, all that reversed. I'll keep the insomnia over taking anything like that again.

I’m extremely sensitive to it and I’ve used it for decades. Started with 5mg in the mid 90’s but discovered literally 1/3 of 1 mg will act like a sedative within 20 minutes. Dreaming more, rare nightmare, will tend to wake 3-4 hours later fresh as a daisy so I’ll lay with eyes closed and 5-10 minutes later will sleep rest of the night. I like it.

I now take melatonin and will on occasion wake up with short-term grogginess. Whether that is from the melatonin or the lingering effects of several years of sleep deficit, I don't know.

Eat well with time-restricted eating and let your mitochondria do the work ( for free ) and you will not regret it.

I have been occasionally taking 1 to 1.5 mg if I haven't had enough activity during the day or been up long enough to easily fall asleep. I started off with 3mg, about an hour before sleep, but that was too much and was hitting me while I was still doing my evening routine. I'll probably take some tonight, because I slept in late but have to be up early for work Monday morning. I am 63. A friend says he takes 10mg, he's about 4 years younger than myself. I live in the central time zone and don't have any issues with time changes of 1-2 hours to either coast.
