  • Hey guys! Very happy to present this week's long-awaited cylinder sleeve repair to the 1937 Chevrolet Town Sedan... Matt & Jim at Strong's Garage have the tool that was used to do these repairs back in the day, and we're going to redo the badly corroded cylinder and save the original 216 engine in this lovely old Chevy! We're joined by Agents 8771 and 0842 and Al and Lionel and beautiful Bella the poodle to make Frankers' day!
Also: figuring out "what happened" with old collision repairs can be a bear, and we're going get things started with just such a situation on Laura's rover 3-litre...
Thank you to everyone who ordered a 1960 Fury T-shirt, our best-selling shirt ever! Thanks for your patience; we sold a lot of them and it took a couple extra days to get them all printed. I am very happy to report that they are being mailed out now... I am looking forward to getting mine, for sure!
Oh! I do not have a Telegram account or any bullshit contest going! Do not respond to any of these "contest winner" replies; they are a scam.
Thanks to everyone who subscribed to our channel here, and thanks also for all of your "likes" and comments!

Im licenced in 3 trades , so im not a handyman but everytime I watch scott bash and tap on a fender it just amazes me how he knows just where to hit and how hard to do so. He is a true craftsman and I love watching these videos of making something beautiful out of junk. So cool. Had to come back and mention your buddies Scott. The bit at Strong's reminds me of a conversation I had years ago. While I was pop riveting something a friend said "This is riveting... I can't look away." I picked up my drill and told him he had good timing, because just before that it was boring. This feels so much better than the JB Weld fix; this car deserved the real repair.

My father was a mechanic for International Harvester. As Cummings pushed more power out of their motors, they started having failures at the top of the wet sleeves. The cure was to increase the depth of the thicker band of metal at the top of the sleeve. This required machining of the block at the top of the cylinder. Cummings sold a lathe that bolted to the block to machine each hole with the block still in the truck. Dad bought one of the lathes and back in the 80's, he was charging $100 a hole. Clearly they were using established technology.
    Great channel!

You can do it with a standard KwiK-Way boring bar too since this is a straight six with the cylinders vertical. Plenty of space to mount it on the block. Just have to be careful where the chips go no matter what machine you use. Protect the crank and surrounding cylinders. V engines have to come out to bore. They made crank grinding equipment to recondition rod journals in the car too during that era.

When ever we had a bore sleeved, we left a step at the bottom to keep the sleeve from working out the lower end while running. That way the repair sleeve is locked in between the step and cylinder head. On larger bores this is a must as the sleeve can shrink enough during cool down to become loose enough to move a bit, then the rings will catch the gap and out the bottom it goes! Had it happen on an early Oil Pull tractor, sleeve was destroyed and the connecting rod bent! On some of those unusual engines we would have to install the sleeve from the bottom as the upper bore has a recessed combustion chamber in it. Then I had the shop install a few recessed/ welded pins on the lower end skirt to keep it in place.

That 'in situ' cylinder boring machine is the most amazing contraption. I haven't got to the 'installing a new liner' part yet, but it's incredible that it can be done without removing the engine from the car and stripping the block right down.

Brother, Like a lot of folks, I can't do much for ya not being a Patreon, but I'll support the work you do for and on your channel everywhere I can, CWM is a no shit reason for the Internet to exist for a whole lot of us that share your passion for loving and working on old cars, the nostalgia, and keeping an attitude of the joie de vive of a whole slice of society around the world that a lot of folks just don't understand, value or even know exists. So, in y'all's honor, I'll go catch a buzz and work on my CB750F's carburetors, which desperately need a rebuild! Cheers as always from Virginia USA!

More Rover Magic. Plus great engine repair using vintage tools, without pulling the engine such expertise. Speaking of Dairy Farmers we use liquid nitrogen at work to install major bushings, put the mandrel with the bushing in the liquid nitrogen till the bubbling stops. Then the bushing basically slides right in place. Great Show as is the norm.
    Cheers.

OH WOW! I'd like to take a minute and geek out about the electric motor powering this device :) that is a repulsion start induction run motor! These were used where high starting torque was required. They started as repulsion motors, but once they were running at a sizable fraction of full speed, the brushes were lifted mechanically and all commutator bars were short-circuited together to create the equivalent of a squirrel-cage induction motor. This is how it was done before capacitor start came to be :) I actually have one of those motors almost identical to that, I'll bring it do you If I ever get the chance to visit!!!

Wondering along the way as my analyzing mind tends to do; I couldn't help but notice all the unique components that make it so. A beautiful shop to do it in, functional heavy metal developed prior our throw-away society to do it with and above all the best of friends to turn the whole proces into a cohesive and fun endeavour. And without any time pressure to get it done. A rare combination these days.
