Put the new filter in with the word "FRONT" on the filter facing the inside of the refrigerator and seat the new filter. Fold it back in and close the door. Done.

I find they seem to "expire" too quickly for my usage, too. I don't know if the computer inside generates a signal to replace based on length of time, or on actual water flow through the filter....(I suspect it's time). They're very expensive, too!

HORRIBLE FILTER INSERT DESIGN!! Video doesn't focus on how difficult this is - user comment (Danny) on using sharpie into the white hole to align in the gray holder did the trick for me...... not this video.
I figured it out. The setting area has to be pulled as far right as it will go before you can insert the new filter. I used a screwdriver by inserting it in the hole and moving far right as it will go. Then the new filter set it perfectly. ... Woo Hoo!! 👍
I just received my GE RPWFE Water Filter. Installing it in my GE Cafe French Door refrigerator was very quick and easy. Before I replaced the old one, I reviewed this helpful video just to refresh my memory. Please note, in the instructions that came with the filter, there are two sets of options. The first option is if you have a GREY filter holder (the filter holder is located inside the refrigerator and is the receptacle where you will be inserting the filter cartridge). If your filter holder is GREY, the instructions state DO NOT TWIST CARTRIDGE when inserting. The second option is if you have a BLACK filter holder. If you have a BLACK filter holder, which has filter clips, the instructions state to TWIST one-quarter turn. I have a grey filter holder, so all I did was take note of where the word FRONT was positioned on the old filter cartridge before I pulled the old one out. I then placed the new one in the same position (word FRONT should be centered and front facing). There are lines on top and bottom of the upper tip portion of the filter cartridge, so if these are aligned properly with the groves in the filter holder, the filter cartridge should go right in. It took only seconds from start to finish. I then ran two gallons of water to purged as stated. I have well water, so replacing the filter regularly has really made a noticeable difference in the taste and quality of our water and ice. Thank you again for this helpful video.
I'm not sure what you mean by Front facing Front. The gray one clearly points to Red symbols @ the 12 o'clock position. This moves the word Front 90d and right toward the back of the fridge. This is supposed to allow the word Back to be near the RFID tag.
That not what the directions say. The directions clearly show the red rectangular facing up at 12 o'clock which puts the word Front facing inward to the back of the fridge. If fact the filter can't even be pushed into place any other way. I hate GE
Gee, she makes it look so simple! The one I have will not come out and I have pulled and pulled! Also, I put in a new filter and never used the ice or water..at all and it still expired! Hate this thing!
This is day #3 of trying to install, and I watched every video available but the little clip on the bottom will not allow installation. No one has addressed how to get the little clip in the correct position.
GE puts a micro-chip (with ID & Timer) in their new fridge water filter (RPWFE), The micro-chip is programed to turn off your water supply, plus turn on a warning-light on the front of your fridge, every 6 months. The only way to turn this indicator light off and get the water flowing again is to buy their Prioritized $50 filter every 6 months regardless of the filters condition. You can easily bypass the GE filter and then they will have to find another way to bring good things to your life.
@@carolinej3661 The bypass is free from GE if you call their 800 number. But your water won't be filtered, unless you buy third party filters and hack the chip out of the bypass and position it correctly in the fridge.
Horrible dam thing won't seat...i recheck making sure front is front back is back. Worse engineered costly item on the market . Going to buy a bypass and get a whole house filter.

@@SaltiDawg2008 Like hell it is! Got it out no problem after watching the video, but I've tried a dozen times to get the new one in, and the video lady is as big a liar as you.
I hate a terrible time with this. But this may help with putting the new filter in - the grey bracket does not move. Behind it is the receptacle, which pivots left and right. If the two are not aligned, you can’t get the filter in. Make sure the receptacle is pivoted all the way over. If you bump it over accidentally, like I did in my first attempt to install, the filter will not fit. You will need to stick something smaller than the filter, like a screwdriver, into the slot and gently pivot back to the fully open position (usually to the right I think)
Anybody here have instructions on how to put it IN? The woman in the video lies like a rug when she says it's easy. Got it out no problem, but I'm about to break the damn refrigerator trying to get the effing new filter IN.

People in the comments are complaining about not being able to get the filter back in, and that's exactly what happened to me. Not even gonna start on the $50 every fucking 6 months for a filter. If you got it out no problem but can’t put it back in you need to make sure it was pushed all the way towards the right and not just a 90 degree angle when removing it. You can use the end of a Wooden spoon to push it all the way to the right. Then putting it back in should work
I spent >$3000 for a whole house water treatment and filtration system when we built this house. Then I later I purchase a GE Refrigerator that I was unaware until now (6 months later) uses the RPWFE water filter with mandatory replacement every 6 months at >$50 a pop. I don't want or need the refrigerator water filter replaced every 6 months. I hate the overdue filter replacement message. I also hate the bypass message that water is not being filtered. I pay approximately $200 annually for maintenance on the whole house water treatment and filtration system. Now GE wants to add a MANDATORY $100 per year for their proprietary water filter that I don't want or need on top of that?.... This is ridiculous and should be illegal. Just tell me how to terminate the messages and I will be happy. Until then, I will continue to give a bad review every opportunity I get.
Our warning light came on for the first time this week. We have the same situation and don't need a filter. When my husband looked in the use-and-care manual, he found a small section about a filter bypass plug: "To reduce the risk of property damage due to water leakage, you MUST use the filter bypass plug when a replacement cartridge is not available." He just called GE and requested the free plug, which is being sent. We did the same thing with an older GE refrigerator when we moved into this house and put in a water filtration system. (Call 800.GECARES.)
This video is misleading. The first time I replaced the water filter it was a horrific struggle. The second time I failed completely. Now, we can’t use the refrigerator for water or ice for two weeks while we wait to pay a service technician to install the water filter. I’m fairly handy around our house. I’m steaming mad we bought this GE refrigerator.
I was able to easily replace the water filter and now it prompts “replace water filter” “dispenser off” Can anyone share experience or solution? Ugh this is frustrating.
@parisgiselle That can sometimes happen if you don't replace your water filter with a genuine GE filter. If you purchased an off brand filter, that may be the reason. Is there a way to get the filter change display message to go away. Our family of 2 has not used 300 gallons of water in the last 6 months. I have a cafe door frig.
Hi Phyllis. To turn off that light on most refrigerators all you have to do is hold down the filter reset button for about 5 seconds, whether you've changed the filter or not. The process isn't the same on every refrigerator so if that doesn't work please make sure to consult your specific owners manual for the proper steps. Thanks for watching! -Carl

My frig has a gray shroud. I followed directions to remove and insert the filters. But, when I swung the new filter into place I discovered I apparently did not insert the new filter firmly in place. So, I removed the filter but the "seat" (my term) mechanism is locked in place as if there is a filter in place. I can't insert the filter while the seat is locked in place and the mechanism won't swing back out to allow me to attempt to insert the new filter more securely. Ideas on how to get the seat to swing back out?

How many gallons is a “couple?” I’ve been running a few and sometimes the water comes out a little grey for a moment before getting clear again. Did I mess up installation somewhere? 😔
@yangirekun1151 You're basically going to run water through it until you don't see sediment any more. It shouldn't take much more than 2 gallons. There are two different methods for different Ge refrigs, hers is one but I have the one where 1. pull on the back of the filter first to pull out until red tags at front of filter are seen2. the swing outward until a click is heard, 3. turn clock wise 1/4 turn 4. pull filter out5 reverse order to replace. The instructions come inside new filter box. My trouble is, I am unable to do step#1 which is not being able to initially pull filter out until the red tags appear.
Trying to replace my Moms filter. Manual states to swivel out, push and pull, also says to rotate, but not which direction. I see no rotating in these videos. And for some reason I can not swivel the filter out from its working position. Has a lot of resistance and the fixture or socket is plastic. Don’t want to force it. Any advise Thanks, Bill

This is 2022 and my GE fridge uses RPWFE filter. I am trying to get the chip from a new GE filter bypass device and use it on a new non-chipped filter not made by GE....... How can you use a chip from a used GE filter and make it work with a new non-chip and non-GE filter? .....my old filters that are chipped and have an expiration count that locks down my whole water-ice system when the count hits zero. Did they use a different technology back then?....I can't seem to make this work.....HELP PLEASE
Did it with no problem six months ago. Changed it again today, and the filter’s in, but the dispenser won’t turn on, and it says the filter needs to be changed. 😠
@Peggy Nunez It may help to remove the new one and reinstall it. There may be something slightly out of place that is preventing it from working. The filter light will need to be reset manually. That is typically done by holding down a button on the display panel by the water/ice dispenser. @Karen Kirby. We're glad you were able to get it installed! Most water filters are recyclable however you'll need to check with your local recycling centers to see if they'll accept them, not all will. Thanks for watching!
Good question. I would guess that it is because they figured out a way to force us to use their filters only and now they can charge whatever they deem satisfying to their bottom line.

That not what the directions say. The directions clearly show the red rectangular facing up at 12 o'clock which puts the word Front facing inward to the back of the fridge. If fact the filter can't even be pushed into place any other way. I hate GE
I agree with “D”! Thank you for truly helpful information!
Great post. Thank you. Easy direct and to the point.
Thank you, This video was a lifesaver. Much appreciated.
Thank god for RUclips 😊😊
Thanks for this to the point, helpful video!
Thank you, I WAS HAVING A VERY HARD TIME and I after I watch your video it's was very easy.
me too
Gee, she makes it look so simple! The one I have will not come out and I have pulled and pulled! Also, I put in a new filter and never used the ice or water..at all and it still expired! Hate this thing!
Thank you for the video! It’s exactly what I needed.
This video saved me a lot of time thank you!
That's great, Sushil Paul! Glad that we could help. Thanks for watching!
This is day #3 of trying to install, and I watched every video available but the little clip on the bottom will not allow installation. No one has addressed how to get the little clip in the correct position.
Really appreciated this! So helpful and concise!
NEW OEM GE Refrigerator Water Filter Bypass Plug WR17X23645 for RPWF, RPWFE
$19.95 on ebay. Thank You
@@parkerbirch1635 how does that work?? And, if you're bypassing the filter, does that mean you can't get water from the fridge?
@@carolinej3661 The bypass is free from GE if you call their 800 number. But your water won't be filtered, unless you buy third party filters and hack the chip out of the bypass and position it correctly in the fridge.
Not only that the code for the control was written by idiots- diesnt run the evsp fan enough
I doesn't turn off your water supply-it just repeatedly warns you! I now HATE GE-was a fan-not any longer.
Are these filter re-usable? meaning can it be cleaned and replaced instead of buying new one?
Who ever designed this did not consider user experience. Installing the filter is a project in itself.
It's actually VERY easy!

Thx. This is THE right way to do the job in UNDER 1 minute.
Isn't the Light Reset part of the proceedure?
It would have been nice to see THAT. Thanks.
Unplug the thing and plug it back in lol
The bypass plug is going to save me a lot of money. If you already have a home water filtration system like myself, buy it asap.
Frig is 5 months old had maybe two gallons run thru it , now I need a fifty $ filter ? Cmon man!
I have to watch this video every six months because I can never remeber
Anybody here have instructions on how to put it IN? The woman in the video lies like a rug when she says it's easy. Got it out no problem, but I'm about to break the damn refrigerator trying to get the effing new filter IN.
If I would have known these filters were $50, I wouldn't have bought a GE refrigerator.
Amen

Perfect, thank you.
Thanks GE. I did as you instructed and pulled the filter straight out, which fucking broke something. Once I realized I broke something, I checked the comments to see if I did anything wrong. Nope! People in the comments are complaining about not being able to get the filter back in, and that's exactly what happened to me. Not even gonna start on the $50 every fucking 6 months for a filter. Ridiculous. This video made me break my fridge and GE made a shitty product. DON'T WATCH THIS VIDEO.
Clear and precise explanation. Thanks!
@Kathy Radford. We're glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
disagree -- his hand was in the way and cannot push filter in as clip on bottom does not go in
This really helped. Thank you!
Very helpful video. Thanks!
Nice fridge marred by a water filter that is way overpriced! I will never buy a GE item again!

Watch video and replace filter as instructed. Light on door still on. Now you have to hold water light down for 3 seconds to reset filter.
Good video, thanks. Very clear instructions + shes cute
If you got it out no problem but can’t put it back in you need to make sure it was pushed all the way towards the right and not just a 90 degree angle when removing it. You can use the end of a Wooden spoon to push it all the way to the right. Then putting it back in should work
Thank you!!!! I tried and tried and tried..... It seems that it only works if the opening is fully opened and then the item will push in. Blah!!!!!!
What do you do when the “Replace Water Filter” message on a GE PSCS3RGXCFSS refrigerator won’t go away after you replace the filter ?
Hey did you ever happen to find out the solution to your problem?
How do I run a few gallons of water through my refrigerator if I can't use the dispensar? Do I just wait for it to make ice?
That is my question
Just get the bypass filter then or rip off the RID.
@@nycupperes Yup. Problem Solved and you can continue to filter using the $8 Filter!
Thanks for sharing
Great job, thanks!
I was able to easily replace the water filter and now it prompts “replace water filter” “dispenser off”
Can anyone share experience or solution? Ugh this is frustrating.
@parisgiselle That can sometimes happen if you don't replace your water filter with a genuine GE filter. If you purchased an off brand filter, that may be the reason. If you have a GE branded water filter, here is a link to some troubleshooting tips from GE: products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=19693
Thank you 🙏🏽
Is there a way to get the filter change display message to go away.

You da goat
This was very helpful!
Great, thanks!
Somebody snatched the filter out before it was it was pulled out enough and now I can't get it back in. The white seal is not out enough to line up the new filter.. Is there anyway to remedy this ??

Did you find out how to reset it?
I never had a more terrible refrigerator. I replacing the filter is a major project. When I push it in and close the door it falls. My unit is only a few years old and I have had the repair person out at list three times
I just bought this refrigerator getting filter out is easy but why can it not go back in as easily my mom has to call a plumber to help that is ridiculous.
If you're getting water out of your dispenser then you've likely installed the filter correctly. If the filter was purchased from Abt and you feel like there's a problem, please send your contact information to us at youtube@abt.com and we'll have one of our technicians reach out to try and help solve the issue.
Absolutely no explanation on how to get the door to recognize that you just installed a new filter so that was a little disappointing
It’s automatic. If you are using a generic filter, it won’t work.
Thanks you that was very helpful.
That filter is a BUGGER to get out and in!
FarOutRadioMusic Yes it is! I found that if you twist in slightly counter clockwise to take it out and slightly clockwise to put it in it works much easier in spite of the directions that came with it saying DO NOT TWIST.

pulling out easy, putting it back in just right took a long time... really annoying
Any advise
Thanks,
Bill
I tore the filter up
The thing is, do you need to reset the filter life clock or does it recognize you put a new one in?
It recognized mine very quickly
easy to follow video...very good!!
Where should I dispense the old filter, in the recycling or trash?
@alexandramontero4488 There aren't a lot of places that recycle old water filters. You can try finding a local recycling center at this links and search Water Filter search.earth911.com/ Otherwise, most wind up being thrown in the trash.
Mine isn't sliding over as easily as yours. And I'm afraid to apply pressure. Should I?

This is 2022 and my GE fridge uses RPWFE filter. I am trying to get the chip from a new GE filter bypass device and use it on a new non-chipped filter not made by GE....... How can you use a chip from a used GE filter and make it work with a new non-chip and non-GE filter? .....my old filters that are chipped and have an expiration count that locks down my whole water-ice system when the count hits zero. Did they use a different technology back then?....I can't seem to make this work.....HELP PLEASE
Just replaced mine and I can’t get the water to flow. Ice is working fine, but would love to fix the water issue
If you're still having trouble and the product was purchased from Abt, please be sure to contact our service technicians for more help: www.abt.com/help/contact-us
Easy, but EXPENSIVE!
I ordered the right filter I received it today and I cannot get it out. I have pulled and pulled but it will not budge now what do I do.
The second time I watched them remove the filter I got it. It was very easy to remove. Now can I recycle the filter or just throw it in the garbage
@Karen Kirby. We're glad you were able to get it installed! Most water filters are recyclable however you'll need to check with your local recycling centers to see if they'll accept them, not all will. Thanks for watching!
Why is this filter so dam expensive?
Good question. I would guess that it is because they figured out a way to force us to use their filters only and now they can charge whatever they deem satisfying to their bottom line.
It is not the chip. It the razor and blade theory. Razor is free.blades are not. No blades no shave
