Hi. The Civil War era forks are great for frying chicken or steak etc... I grew up using some and I have found two so far at garage/estate sales that I use for that purpose. They always make me smile as I think of how many people in the last 160 years have used them. Regarding reading the tiny marks on jewelry, I recommend buying a pair of 3.5 or higher magnification and clipping them to the front of your shirt. No one will think much of someone wearing reading glasses at a sale.

Great story with the forks! Makes sense for flipping meat since they have fewer tines, and they've got a sharper point. Makes it easy to flip things, I bet. I've always been hesitant about bring any kind of magnifying glass to sales. I already stand out enough as it is being a big bearded guy looking at jewelry. 🤣🤣
