Lots of tips, torque settings and ways out of problems all the way through this video. The MR2 precats are being replaced with a stainless steel replacement and the stock box with a dual exit system. I used toyota gaskets for the replacements.
Like, comment and subscribe... it would really help me out folks.
Next up on the MR2... suspension!

I broke a stud doing that, but thankfully it left enough meat to use a stud puller to get it out, set me back 10mins. It was really scary, anyways, great job and thank you for stating the torque specs!
Ahhh glad to hear you could get it out...that was my worst fear but was ok for me in the end. Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated 😊👍
Hi , sounds ok , nice work and thanks for your videos .👌👍👍
Thanks 👍
Great video motivation for me!
Awesome thanks for watching
@@DadDiaries we want to see more of the car!
Sure thing...lots of videos coming, just need to the time to shoot and fit the parts.... Happy new year!
Awesome video...really appreciate the detail. I’m about to do the same thing on a 2001 and have a question about the top heat shield. Is there any need to replace it or is it trash after removing it? I fear the O2 sensor wires might be compromised without protection. Thanks!
So I've run mine ever since without the heat shield and not had any problems. The manifold I bought didn't have the mounts for the shield....if the one I bought had them I'd have probably replaced it. But it hasn't cause me any issues and damn is that thing ugly eh!
Many thanks for the reply. Did you do anything special to address the right O2 sensor wire?
I just unclipped the first clip to give it a bit of slack, I intended to splice in an extension to the cable but tbh I'd forgotten all about it and it's been fine. I'll get round to that when the weather is better.
Roger that, thanks again kind Sir!
No worries 👍
Nice new set up with the filming you got going there! Didn’t realise your boy was into cars too 👍 whats the lockup for? Work or pleasure?
Cheers fella. ... his unit is for pleasure, keeps his toys in there lol!
What about the cavalier turbo
Sorry that one is out of bounds. It's not Toms
What happens with the O2 Sensors? Won't they sent false information with the cat removed and thus mess with engine management?
Nope no problems :)
@@DadDiaries Oh, really. I mean people have done it so you must be right but still seems kinda odd to me
At around 10:15 you commented about a larger seal for the timing chain tensioner. I replaced mine and have the same problem. What did you get?
There was a synthetic version that was a bit bigger than was available to swap out from the stock one. I'll see if I can find the details and come back to you
Nice Vid, thanks for all the torque settings, Planning on doing this myself soon, but swapping out the main cat for a malian 1 too.
No worries, glad it was useful...good luck!
Well done, this seemed like it went well for you, all my manifold upper nuts are rounded so I might try removing the studs, there is certainly water getting in there so I will check the brake light cable also, you son has good taste in cars, I had a JZX100 chaser before, they are great cars.
Cheers Chris, yes I was pretty fortunate. When the heat sheild nuts just crumbled away I thought I was in for big trouble but it went fine. You could try those easy out sockets that grab and cut into rounded nuts?
Yeah he has some good cars, his JZX100 is mad and has a load or power upgrades ready to go on!
Nice work Mark. Sounds pretty killer too, more throaty.
Thanks Bruce, I'm pretty pleased with the outcome!
Sounds great Mark! Your son has a fun place to store his toys! Perfect for winter jobs. Has he given you a little corner all to yourself? 😉👍😂
Hey Niamh how are you? Good I hope. Yes it's a great place to work in the winter...and when the sun is trying to dry roast me on the driveway as well. I do actually... in the corner my trailer is sitting there at the moment hahaha.
Doing good thanks Mark! Busy because of summer holidays but the little man is back to school now so I'm playing catch up and hopefully get to edit some videos 🙄😂😂
Love the sound! My exhaust set up is similar to your with the double exit. I used the magnaflow 12266 because is the same used on the dual exit PPE exhaust and a vibrant ultra-quiet resonator for the drone. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks Junito, I'm pretty pleased with it and it all stands me in for about £230!
@@DadDiaries woahhhh thats super cheap amazing
Sounds great. Is this using an aftermarket air filter as well? Does it pull a bit better with the exhaust mods?
Yes it's got a cone filter which is covered in another vid. If it does pull better it's in the mid range and only marginally. There's no big gains to be had with the stock engine without a piggy back ECU or turbo/supercharger
Hello chief
So i keep failing my MO2 on emissions. New spark plugs, new oxy sensors. I have thrown away my pre cats for a stainless manifold and have a pod filter. Am thinking new precat manifold, new maf sensor or back to original airbox. Do you have any opinion?
Have you cleaned the MAF sensor and pulled the battery terminal to reset the fuelling on the ECU? Drive it a bit first so it maps the fuelling and then take it to the MOT hot. Pre cats are only there until the engine is up to temps.
@@DadDiaries i have done neither. I see a new MAF sensor is £22 on ebay so might avoid cleaning for a new one
@@andrewsparey697 cleaning it is pretty easy and you might be buying an inferior sensor for that money
Hi , I’m planning to get a MR2 roadster as well, but will the pre cat delete make the car not pass mot? Cheers
I don't know anyone who has had a problem with the delete on an MOT 🙂
What manifold is it. Tried googling the name you mentioned but didn't come across a match,
The seller is on ebay as Garage 59. Also look for Hamish on the uk MR2 roadster owners on facebook and the group buy on www.mr2roc.org :)
Hi Mark - having my manifold swapped next week for a tubular version. Have you had any issues related to your swap? I was also wondering about any noticeable change in torque?
Hey Rob, I haven't had any issues, not sure on the torque changes aspect, maybe some in the mid range but this could be a placebo, although I did change the exhaust at the same time.
Dad Diaries it turns out mine had already had the stock manifold de-catted! Embarrassing. But at least I can confirm it has no effect on emissions as it has flown through again.
Ahhh damn! Well at least it has been done lol. Did they still charge you?
Dad Diaries it was Dick S and he was very understanding!
He's such a great guy!
Are the pre cats bad on all the mr2 spyders or just certain years?
The manifold suffered with vibration issues on the earlier models which could cause the honeycomb structure of the precast internals to fail, drop into the exhaust, block it and back pressure the engine as well as draw the dust into the cylinders and grind away nicely. From about 03 I think, the manifold had an additional mount point added at the bottom to provide more stability. When I replaced my manifold the internal honeycomb of my precast was perfect! (See vid). Hope that helps 😃
Will the MR2 pass an MOT emissions test with that manifold on ? Or do you need to replace the Cats?
Before I do it to my MR2 Mark 🤣🤣
Those cats are over kill and are not needed at all to pass the MOT.
As Chris said, the pre cats were put in to achieve emissions standards in other countries. They are there to bring the emissions lower at startup until the main cat warms up. I have an MOT tester friend so I'm going to see if he can test the emissions for me soon for info for subscribers, my MOT isn't due till next year.. I'll keep you posted but it shouldn't be an problem :)
Nice one ,thanks lads. Might be job for me over the winter 😋👍
Mine passed with the pre cats removed no problems.
Good to know thanks :)
*editted*What exhaust back box is that ? Was it mailan as I didn't think his where oval tipped? Let us know how the emissions test goes too. Very good upload again thanks! *just replayed and think you said long line rather than long life I misheard :)
Yeah I think I did say longline but meant longlife.. was a custom box made for the MR2 I bought from another owner who sold his car and kept the box before the car went off. Was only about few months old when I bought it. Sounds great, no drone, growly at low revs and gets brighter the higher the revs go :)
@@DadDiaries it looks great oval tipped! Maybe custom is the way to go, looks ace
A very professional type video in the real world ,that black Merc looks tasty can we have a review
Cheers Vaughan appreciate that feedback! Alas that Merc is the only car I can't take out as it's his mates and it's been sold now!
Nice work and good video mate. It's good to see you back.
Thanks Aaron 😀👍
Is it normal for the car to smell very slightly rich with this manifold? I bought a mk3 second hand with this already fitted and noticed the engine smells slightly rich at times.
I find the it can smell rich after the battery has been disconnected until the ECU has reset the fuel trim. Sometimes if it's idling when first being started it can smell a bit rich but I found that before I changed the manifold as well. Hope that helps.
@@DadDiaries thanks, appreciate your feedback and the vids! Thanks for taking the time to reply 👍
Thanks for the kind feedback, glad to be of help :) 👍😁
Nicely done mate :) waiting for the suspension video next :)
Thanks fella, all planned in.. 19th Oct! Springs, drop links, roll bars and if time allows poly bushes
Looks good and sounds good, great improvement!
Thanks buddy :) 👍
Smashed out my pre cats last week, I’m sure it’s lost some lower end torque.. might look into a full system 👍
The longlife custom i've got sounds great and is full stainless. Cobra was just too loud
@@DadDiaries any reason why you didn’t just gut the pre cats? And wasn’t you tempted by a race cat? Hear some folk get over 150bhp with a full system
@@lassydogpie5390 you talking with supporting mods and a tune? Just doing intake/exhaust or both isn't going to give you 30-50hp...
Which exhaust did you fit. I am asking as some appear to be poorly made or excessively noisy.
Mine is a custom longlife (brand not type) stainless exhaust.
Thank you for that, have you got a contact number or E mail for them?
@@baz5372 if you search longlife exhausts on Google they have centres all over the UK
Searched and found it thank you.
I just bought a 2001 mr2 mk3. Just wondering can u fit the Milan tte double exhaust back box if the cars not turboed?
If it fits to the stock manifold then yes. If it's part of a turbo kit then it might not. Have you got a link?
@@DadDiaries I don't think it's part of a turbo system just it has the tte tag on the Milan exhausts website. Won't let me link it here tho. I think it will fit. But I guess I'm just asking if a back box is designed for a turbo car will it still operate ok? Just Before I buy it haha 😶. I'm getting the manifold also to get rid of the pre cats thought I'd get a new rear box also.
@@chrisdunlop9759 just checked the website...it should fit fine.
But buy the proper crush gaskets when you fit it....don't use those flat crap ones
@@DadDiaries thanks for the help. I'll definitely check out the correct gaskets and order them also.
Any codes after you put it all together?
Nope none at all and never have to this day :)
@@DadDiaries sweet! Good to hear. Toyota missed the bus on this one
What do you do so emissions can pass? Spacers?
No issues with the MOT :)
@@DadDiaries wouldn’t the ecu detect abnormally high air flow through the o2 sensors and turn on the CEL?
Did you notice any difference ?
Sound... Yes absolutely, power and torque I couldn't test and there was too much traffic, it felt like it pulled a bit harder but I need to drive it a bit more to fully understand the difference. I'll do a video on my impressions shortly :)
Any updates on the results from the new headers? Keep wondering whether there is any difference in power.
Nice vid! What kind of wheels are that? They look awesome!
They are the stock five spoke wheels in Black :)
