    Chris and Josh are back for another Deep Dive to discuss the new favourite for the Liverpool manager job that will be vacant in the summer. Ruben Amorim - currently at Sporting Lisbon - has become the most likely option to manage The Reds after Xabi Alonso ruled himself out by announcing he will be staying at Bayer Leverkusen beyond this season.

    I remember seeing a couple of weeks ago a match up of Alonso and Amorim. Amorim matched our style of football. More than Alonso did, but I wanted Alonso mainly because he already understands the club and the people. Hope he still wins their league. I was fine not getting him, but that for me meant Amorim is the only other manager I'd want. Unless there is so perfect manager for us in the data. I hope its Amorim.

    As a portuguese it's always exciting when one of our coaches is linked with a big club.......I will say, I have no doubt Amorim is a top manager. But top managers don't work at big clubs all the time......Emery is a top manager didn't work at Arsenal, Conte I'd consider him a top manager too and was sacked at Spurs.
    So, I don't know if he will work at Liverpool but It would surprise me A LOT if the team's level dropped dramatically with him in charge. But if it did drop...it doesn't mean he's not a great coach...........it just means Liverpool is a big job....specially following Klopp.
    That being said.......the "shoe-in" Alonso is only being evaluated based on what he is doing THIS season. He hasn't won anything yet. He finished 6th in the Bundesliga last season. I think people forget, there's nothing assuring he'd be a perfect replacement for Klopp too.
    Were I a Liverpool fan, I'd adjust expectations. A new manager isn't going to come in and win the league VS Pep and Arteta right off the bat.

    Another great piece by Josh! Echoing my thoughts why personally I am a bigger fan of Amorim than i was with Alonso. Once you deep dive into the underlying numbers and what Amorim has achieved in the last 5 years compared to Alonso, it is very obvious that Amorim is the better fit for the club right now. The transition from Klopp wont be as huge as it might be with Alonso.

    I gotta tell you, as a Sporting fan, i spent the last 3 to 4 hours watching the immense ammount of videos that came out on Amorim style this past week and this was BY FAR the best one. You completly nailed your analisis!
    Our defensive play is really good but Adan this year has been a nightmare, comeplty usless, having him or nothing at the goal amounts to the same impact. Add to that the loss of Nuno Mendes and Porro and i'd say we havent been in the best defensive shape, especially cause in the Right Back we've played most season with Ricardo Esgaio. Go do some data research on him and you'll see just how bad he is: probably not even good enough for 2nd tier portuguese league. Im honestly surprized by seeeing some of these numbers. Having such numbers while fielding Adan and Esgaio, hence, playing with 9 players instead of 11, is just insane.
    Our ofensive play has been godlike this year, but i gotta tell you / warn you: a lot of it comes down to Gyokeres and dont think for a second that Nunes is half the player Gyokeres is. In fact, the only call back to earth i would give Liverpool fans is precisely that! I dont think Nunes is such a good fit for Amorim preciselly because while we do throw a lot of direct balls behind the deffenders, i would argue that the "target man" style of Gyokeres is what has helped us most this season. But that guy is just a cheat code, its not even a fair comparisson: he is good dribler, good on the wing, good with assists, good finisher, good target man, great runs, super strong and surprizingly still has the stamina and quality to make for a very effective high press. So yeah, take that ofensive prowess with a grain of salt, because last year, before gyokeres, we werent doing good at all in offensive play.

  • @kenadumekwe5116
    @kenadumekwe5116 Месяц назад +4

    I think a back 3 is the way to unlock the best out of TAA as he can play at wingback and we can build around him. the problem is the squad as presently assembled has a ton of No8's due to playing 433. The 343 doesn't have room for No 8s wh cannot play as a double pivot 6 or a wide forward/No10. I fear for Gravenberch and Bobby Clark who wont get much game time with this system

    • @tony1kenobi468
      @tony1kenobi468 Месяц назад +4

      It’s always the case though that new manager brings new systems and players. Szobo will look a better player in a 10 than an 8, same for Elliot and Mo at this stage of his career.

    • @greentuga691
      @greentuga691 Месяц назад

      I'll have to correct you there. At Sporting Pedro Gonçalves on paper plays on the wing, but he has a very "8" like behaviour, you could say we play assymetrical football in that regard, because on the right we have Edwards / Trincão wich are pure wingers and on the left we have Pote (Pedro Gonçalves) who likes play more central and create chances instead of making runs. It may seem kinda strange but i find it to be a kind of "secret" weapon that no one is really prepared to play against. He just likes to cut back and help in midfield duties a lot of times, either on ofense or defense, he is that little annoying guy that is always between your defense and midfield just making a mess of it, super underated player imo. So yeah i dont think Amorim would just dismiss those 8s like you're saying, in fact, i would find it surprizing if he played salah, nunes and jota at the same time because they have too similar characteristics.

    • @kenadumekwe5116
      @kenadumekwe5116 Месяц назад +1

      @@greentuga691 I think we are saying the same thing. In that front 3 he likes to have 1 of the 2 behind the central striker having 8/10 characteristics ie Goncalves, Szobo, Elliott , maybe Jones. On other side he likes a wide forward like an Edwards or a Salah Jota type. But one of the 2 has to be an output merchant. Idk if Diaz can be a wing back. Gakpo possibly can be on left side of the front 3…Idk..will be interesting to find out how he uses the players for his system. Fact is that squad was built to play 433.

    I think it's fair to compare him to Villas-Boas, which failed in the Premier League, but Amorim has a lot of more experience and a big career as a player, having played at Benfica and under the legendary Jorge Jesus, which provided unvaluable experience. Outside the pitch, he's by far the best communicator in Portugal since Mourinho. Extremely inteligent in dealing with the press, and the players like him a lot as well. He's very focused on signing the very best players for his style. He "forced" Sporting to spend 40M€ in only two players, which was a massive jump for the club, but worked out brilliantly (Gyokeres). He's not fully ready, but is a solid bet and wouldn't be shocking if he ends up winning more PL trophies than Klopp have.

    I'd highlight the fact that there are 4 Portugese teams in the top 20 (referring to the 'Europe's Best Defence' slide - Shots Faced). And something you could potentially take from this is that the attacking ability of the majority of the teams in that league is shite. Thus you have Braga, Sporting, Benfica and Porto all featuring in that table. I'd say the relative low quality of that league makes Sporting out to be more superior than they are.

    Sorry but those graphics (and xG stats), comparing Sporting to the PL and BL teams, are just pointless. That is the Portuguese league - there are only 4 teams worth the name (and note how Porto and Benfica are also both very high in your graphs) so comparing them to the PL (or BL) is ridiculous. You want to know how weak? Sporting, in the league, have scored 8 goals twice this season, 6 once and 5 three times. Continued emphasis during this video on how good defensively they are is like us playing in the 2nd Division and using those stats !
    I'm far from convinced Amorim is the right manager for us. He has a poor record in Europe, which is certainly a better barometer. He has no experience outside Portugal, has not managed any top team or top players, he plays with an inflexible 3 at the back (meaning a lot of change for our players if he's appointed). He would be a wild gamble.
    Inzaghi doesn't speak ANY English and has already said he's staying at Inter. Maybe do a deep dive on Emery as he ticks a LOT of boxes.

    Every one is so gullible. Alonso is coming to Liverpool. They needed to get the press off his back as he needs to concentrate on Bayers challenge this sesason and not be harrassed at every press conferance. He told everyone at the beginning that he would only decide once the season is over and that he would not say anything out of respect for his current job and will see at the end of the season, but NOBODY listens.
