Changing the Finish on My Precision Guitar Kits LP
HTML-код

- In this video we are stripping the amber finish off of the top of my LP guitar kit from precision guitar kits and changing it up with a fresh dye job and a beautiful finish from Maximum Guitar Works. The previous dye work is being used to help accent the new finish, and we are doing a two layer mohawk dye job followed by a nice hard wax oil.

10/10 way better coloring. Beautiful
Thanks; I’m glad you like it.
I think this was a good choice. I get what you were looking for with the "swampy" look, but it looks stunning the way it ended up. That flame maple needs to be shown off like this!
I’m glad you like it. I’m happy with the choice to redo it.
@@BradAngove kinda wanted a high gloss on that green awesomeness but at least the grain and figuring is coming thru. very nice
Brad, you're definitely giving me the courage to build one of these kits. Great channel, I continue to learn a lot from your videos!Congratulations on the new addition to the family. Cheers 🤘🎸👍
Thank you; I’m glad you’re finding the videos helpful.
This guy gave me the confidence to have a go at repainting my sg, he is right when he says to wait for the duplicolor paint to dry thoroughly before any sanding, am waiting at least 3 days before even touching the guitar, thanks heaps for your advice and tutorials, awesome dude indeed 🙏👊🎸😊
Thanks Graham
Everyone: Brad is so awesome at what he does! I love watching him work!
Me: yes i agree.....as a fellow lefty, i find his videos very satisfying lol
Haha nice
You do love your green guitars!
Looking fantastic Brad, your Precision Kit is turning out to be a real heirloom quality instrument.
Great content and I'm glad RUclips notified me when this video posted today.
Thanks; I’m glad you like it.
The refinish was great, but you feeding the baby was greater 😁 I was smiling
Haha I probably shouldn’t have recorded while holding her but it was my only chance to do it.
@@BradAngove it was fine Brad. You be a great dad it’s the best thing you can do.
Excellent work, honest an thorough.
Thank you Shawn
Being a fan of satin finishes I have to say that looks absolutely gorgeous. BIG improvement over what it was. Was good before, is better now is what I meant to say. Nice work all around. Stay well....
Thank you; I’m glad you like the change. I’m very happy with it.
Yeah, the change was for the better.
That top popped nicely 😊
Wow. I just bunged your channel the other day and spent time on this series. Cool to see you bring it back and work on it.
Thank you
That is so great! I love this so much better.
I’m glad to hear it.
Yeah.....I'm liking that a LOT better brother!
Thank you - I’m happy with it.
Thanks for the video Brad - "alright guitar turn and cough" cracked me up! - Cheers
I’m glad my questionable sense of humor doesn’t go unappreciated haha.
The removal of the amber and addition of the blue was a great move. The blue isn't overpowering but just adds a faint amount of contrast. Looks great! I don't know why RUclips uses different names for my comments. I've probably screwed up something!
I’m glad you like the change
Awesome vid Brad--as always. 👌🏻
Thanks Andy
Wow, what a difference when you took that amber lacquer off and detailed out that top with color. It went from meh to WOWZER in short order. The SOS finishes are surprisingly durable too. I built a cherry handle for the sliding glass door going out to the patio in my house and finished it with SOS six or seven months ago. It’s a high traffic door and it still looks and feels like new. Great work and great video as usual. Thanks for sharing?
I’m glad you agree with the choice. I think it looks great this way and I’m very impressed with the SOS finish.
@@BradAngove That amber finish you removed was kind of a Catch 22 situation.
You had to give the amber a try as its the only way you would ever know how it looked.
This isn't a fail in the least, much was learned by everyone, thank you for sharing.
I really like the look of this guitar after you removed the amber tent you had on the top before. It looks like the new blue and green dies you put on after you removed the amber brought back a lot more of the figure in the wood and looks less splotchy. Looks really good now and cleaner.
Glad you like it
this looks way better
Glad you like it
Brad - precision Kits look amazing, always have. Found one called PVX guitars in North Carolina who look to have amazing kits but only 3 models. look top quality. Might be worth exploring. They have an amazing double cutaway
I’ve seen the PVX kits. They do look awesome. Maybe I’ll get in touch with them some day.
Nice.
Yeah as soon as you applied that 1st coat it popped like crazy !! Definately glad you went back in & refinished the top as it looks killer now !!
Hope the lil one is doing well also !! :)
Thanks Terry; I’m glad you like it. The little one is well. So far so good.
Thank God
Much prefer this finish. The green looks outstanding. The amber really muted it. It looks stunning now.
Thanks Robert
As always, damn good job.
Like this a lot better than the amber, very nice. For the benefit of anyone doing this the first time, if you have your perfect multi-colored burst done, you definitely want to shoot a couple of thin coats of sealer on it before you hit it with oil, otherwise it will change the color blend.
You know who else doesn't like the Amber? John Depp.
Objection - hearsay.
@@BradAngove counselor, it was your question.
Boooo hisssss
You mean Jack Sparrow, or did y’all not watch the MeatCanyon vid?
Omg I’m dying 😂
If using distilled water to mix your colorants, once it’s dry the SOS #7 or #8 won’t take color off.
I personally think brown is a good base for an amber stain. Black makes Amber look muddy! You have done another great job brother. Awesome! ✌️
Thank you; and I agree about the base colors.
Finish it!
I’d love to
Didn't hate the Amber, but the Green/Blue really does look nice.
Thanks
I really like that color. You done good Brad. As usual. 🇨🇦🇨🇦👍 Careful though. The Amber will poop on your bed. 🤣😂
I'm a fan of oil finishes on guitars for the average hobbist. They're so much easier to do at home you don't have a spraybooth, and easier to do all year round too, when the weather prevents you from spraying outside, or in a shed or garage. Those finishes look great and the thicker one looks really interesting. I'd love to try them, but £84 shipping to the UK is a hard no sadly.
Crimson guitars has a good oil finishing system available in the UK.
@Brad Angove I've used them, they're good. Definitely more like that first product you used. Not seen anything from them that is more viscous, like the final finish coat, which looks interesting.
Do they have Odies oil available there?
@Brad Angove I can get it, although a 250ml jar of Odie's Wax is getting on for £70 delivered. Better, but not great. Crimson is definitely to go to here, that's for sure.
Mohawk pre-catalyzed clear gloss is only $12.73 on the Mohawk site. Amazon beats you up for $32.00. BTW, this is my go to top coat.
Good choice. I didn’t realize there was such a price difference - that’s crazy.
Yes the old hold a new born trick for good narration. Pretty sure it’s how Morgan Freeman does it. Lol
IMHO a good choice and the project will be informative...though I claim no special consideration on either point :)
I’m glad you agree with the decision.
Looks great, even though for a dyed flamed maple like that, I'd prefer a bit more gloss, but as you say, it's your guitar. :)
I do have a question about the (#8) oil finish, though. Would Japan Drier work to speed up the drying time on it?
I’m not sure; I’ve never tried it. I don’t usually opt for oil if I’m looking for something that dries quickly.
Brad, what is the finish on the green guitar directly behind you? Love the look!
That one is made of metal with some of my metal artwork on top. That’s why it has that look.
Brad .. I am a believer now. The Amber hid the flame on that beautiful top.. black sand back not needed as that grain absorbed enough green/blue.. that finish is quite easy . But how durable will it be vs multiple coats of nitro??..
It depends on what you mean by durable. It won’t ding up like nitro, so more durable in that sense. It also doesn’t protect the wood with a hard layer like nitro, so less durable from that perspective.
@@BradAngove like hitting the top with your guitar cable leaving a dent.. poly can take that.. nitro.. not so much.. guessing this is protective from moisture but maybe not knowing it about.. looks awesome.. !! how much cure time does that stuff require ?
It doesn’t cure per se, it just dries over time. I’m not sure how long exactly. I think it probably continues to harden for a while, but it’s dry enough to the touch after a day or so.
Looks way better now, but the patch of left over blue was annoying me. Unless it was just a camera illusion.
There’s some blue under all of it. I suspect it will be accented by shadows. I guess let me know in the next episode what you think when it’s at a different angle.
Nooooo!!!! Don't do it!!!! Now it looks...(changing my mind)...beautiful.
Haha glad you like it
I like the new color. Where are you getting your Mohawk blue and green from? Amazon and most of my other sources are only carrying traditional wood colors. The only place i can find them is direct from Mohawk and that is probably the most expensive route. I may also play around with some aniline solid dyes but they call to be mixed in water and I don't know how well that will work with a lacquer finish - don't want to trap water under the lacquer.
I’ve heard direct from Mohawk is actually cheaper than amazon. Either way I got mine straight from their marketing department.
He water based option is fine, you just need to give it plenty of time to fully dry.
@@BradAngove I checked today, the price is cheaper but the shipping is $30 for two bottles. I’ll keep looking. I can make green by mixing blue and yellow but it will require some experimentation. I have some ash baseball bat blanks I’m using to test colors since I have two really nice Solo swamp ash strat bodies. Thanks for the inspiration.
@BradAngove, sorry if this has been asked and answered before...where did you get the round yellow sanding block I've seen you use several times. I didn't find it listed in your "favorite products". Thanks
I got it from Amazon. The seller company is called Kiolux.
@@BradAngove thanks!
I didn't dislike the Amber over there green but this was a great call it looks amazing and really pulls out the grain. BTW how did the frig tape hold up? Any seepage?
The frog tape actually seemed to work well, but I was pretty careful with the application so I’m not sure it would have mattered much.
Hey Brad…based on this video I bought the SOS kit, laid 4 coats of #8, then 4 coats of #7 and while it looks great, I really was hoping for a glossier finish. Is that still possible after this application? And if so, how? You mentioned maybe coming back and buffing this out for more sheen, but I know you’ve got your hands full (pun intended after your “if you hear hiccups…” comment 😂) and may not get to that video soon! I would love to your thoughts on this one!
Also, my #7 wasn’t nearly as think and goopy as yours in the video, and I shook the life out of it (that is not a play on words….babies hate that 😂)
I haven’t tried buffing it yet but I have spoken to a couple of people involved in producing and testing it and they said it could be polished up.
@@BradAngove did you happen to hear or see what that process was? Is it a separate polishing compound?
I think my first shot at it will be just with the polisher and no compound.
Not like you removing a finish lol Have you got your hands on Ben's ( crimsonm) finishing oil yet? ( his take on tru oil) it looks good and easy to use.....
Haha yeah classic me.
I’ve tried the Crimson oils. It was quite a while ago though and I think they may have added new options since then.
@Brad Angove yeah the new one mate he took tru oil and reverse engineered it to his own recipe, looks like good stuff
Like the oil idea, but seems like way too big a bottle for a build or two…
I guess it depends on how many coats you’re doing. Keep in mind I only did the front here. It would take more oil to do the entire guitar. The waxed one will last quite a few projects though I’m sure. It doesn’t take much.
You.should take a few courses or something..
Thanks for the tip.
I think it looks better without the amber. That looks like tedious work!
The removal is a bit annoying, but it’s pretty quick. And worth it I think.
@@BradAngove Yeah it's worth it!
Is this like Tru-oil? How does it compare?
So it is an oil finish, but that’s about where the similarities end. SOS is made with only natural oils, there is nothing dangerous or bad for you in it. It leaves a beautiful, safe to apply, durable finish that’s easy to apply, dries in a reasonable amount of time feels like silk. Tru-Oil is pretty much opposite to that, except the finish when done right after it finally dries is beautiful. It’s has some nasty petroleum distillates in it. I’ve used a lot of Tru-Oil over the years, I think this is far better, IMHO.
Michael is probably one of the top two authorities on this product - so what he said.
@@pops71 Thanks Michael. I’ve used Tru-Oil on a lot of guitar tops. (I’m 62) One of the issues is that it’ll take a light blue top and turn it green, and it tends to take light wood like a Maple neck, and yellow it, which might be just what someone wants. Otherwise, I never had anyone die from its use.
@@3cardmonty602 My pleasure, yeah I’m sure there’s not a long list of death and disease attributed to TO…lol. It is nice using SOS and not worrying about gloves or fumes. I know exactly what you mean about discoloration, I’ve been building for 30 something years and in some cases that amber tint is welcome, other times not so much. SOS doesn’t add any color to the wood or finish. In fact, if you have any un absorbed dye that hasn’t dried and is actually muting the finish, the all natural solvent in SOS will clean up that that mess without “digging in” or ruining your hard work. It’s pretty amazing stuff. The fretboard treatment is also amazing, it will make your fretboard feel like silk sheets.
It needs gold hardware.
Indeed
Just admit you screwed it up.
Haha ok. I screwed it up. Some people liked it, some didn’t. I decided to change it. It is now “un-screwed”.
i love the "yaaay" 😂
Hahaha
