    Square Enix are always keen to experiment with the Final Fantasy brand, but sometimes it just doesn't pan out. And in the case of Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier, that's very much the case.
    In this video, we will explore the events that led up to The First Soldier being terminated and explain why, in our opinion, it can only be deemed as a complete failure.

    I had tried the game shortly after it came out, but the touch controls were just so awkward to use that I only played like three matches. Ironically, after I got a new phone I decided to give it another go and managed to connect my PS4 controller to it via Bluetooth. Won my first match with no issues. I strongly believe the game would've faired much better with a PC/console release instead of mobile.

      Wait, you can use your PS4 controller on your phone? I was wondering if I could buy either the PS4 or PS5 controller separately without buying the whole PS4 or PS5 console.
      I do prefer buying an Xbox controller without buying the Series S or X console, and if the Xbox controller can play non-Xbox games on my phone.

      @@Isaac-gh5ku Oh my...you never knew you could buy a controller without the console?! Imagine if that were true, we'd all quit playing consoles, lol. My sibling has worn out so many controllers alone with playing fighting games on my PS4, it would be impossible to play them if I had to buy a whole console each time we needed a new controller 😅
      While maybe finding a PS5 controller might be difficult (just given the short supply of PS5 stuff in general, unless you don't mind paying scalped prices), getting a PS4 controller on its own is quite easy. If you're in America, visit your local Game Stop or, globally, you should be able to buy one online.
      Oh, and I highly advise against bootleg or knockoff versions of the controller. A PS4 controller might still cost about $60 brand new, but the difference in quality between it and a knockoff is immense.

      Sadly, Square Enix have reverted to a Japan-centric model of business, which is great for the devs when making the content, but not so great if that means following the mobile gaming trend in Japan without considering whether or not that's the right choice for the game.

    I do believe that the mobile only release *was* the issue here... Although I'll speak for myself. While I was bemused about a FFVII Battle Royale, the stuff I've seen afterwards made it look fun albeit different. But one thing stopped me absolutely of playing it at all, even though I did download it: touch controls. I'm not a big fan of them, specially in a shooter. That put me off 100% to not even wanting to try it at all. But if, it had been released on PC or consoles, I would at least have given it a shot, since I prefer the controls. Alternatively, I can just, pop in most other "abandoned" games and play them. If I want to play Goldeneye007 for whatever reason, I can just play it.
      It's true that fan servers can be made, but it's also true that very often these projects are also mortal, in addition to losing features from the original release. A good example is Sonic Runners, whose fan revival lost 60-80% of its original content due to most of it being lost to the aether -- and once those fan servers become inconvenient to host (cost, commitment, etc), they'll also go down, and now the game's dead yet again.
      Fan servers are an amazing achievement, but they just kick the can down the curb; it's an inferior option to just being able to _play_ them offline. Online-only service games are horrible for game preservation, innately.

      @robinmattheussen2395 Год назад +5

      While I am absolutely someone who cares a lot about preservation and I would agree that there should be some legislation about how companies can destroy their own games, we also have to be honest: in 99% of all mobile games, the online dependency is completely baked in. There is no game left if you take out the online element.

And then there's the fact that mobile applications tend to become incompatible way quicker than other traditional software, so you'd have to do some hacking to maintain the client software as well, it's just a pain in the dick for a game that most likely everyone will have forgotten about within a month.

    • @rwilliamisen
      @rwilliamisen Год назад +1

      @@robinmattheussen2395 I generally agree that it would be great to have some legislation in place that requires offline versions to kick around -I miss Dissidia NT proper for instance. What I don’t agree with however, is such government oversight that overrides the will of the IP holders, even if it disenfranchises the fans. Such oversight is great for things like labour relations and financial oversight but gets messy beyond that.
      I’ve asked myself these questions for ages now myself and recently I’ve come to the conclusion that the fans have done it to themselves but not necessarily realising it. The reality of the world is that games require profit in order to exist/continue and yet consumers continually rebel against that which stands as a way to continue their favourite titles. Example follows:
      The outcry against NFTs in gaming for less than AAA titles sent a clear message; gamers support high end content and experiences but do not support alternative funding methods. NFTs were the first true bridge between true F2P games and gacha style games. Unlike in the case of a gacha where investments are lost at the close of a game, NFTs are considered ownership a la stocks in a company in many countries that have modernised their blockchain legislation. To that end, rather than rally behind NFTs and creating a consortium that advocates on behalf of the gamer, we ranted and troll posted with our arms crossed like children. If you review Square Enix’s company filings, you will see that there is a cost associated with those who held NFTs in the game and the “value” that must be met or compensated. Long story short, if gamers and indeed people in general get ahead of companies on blockchain ownership concepts, companies will be beholden to the NFT owners and their concerns -not unlike shareholders.
      We gotta stop being reactive and start being proactive toward how we consume media, lest it consume us. The choice has always been our own and gachas survive because they are gambling. A F2P game of high quality cannot exist without funding.

    I was incredible hyped for the game. I spend an incredible amount of time mastering the game during the beta and beyond. Earning nearly all the achievements, including feats that are virtually impossible in other Battles Royales (the worst of which being achievements winning by doing little to nothing).
    I managed to hit the equivalent of Grand Master, being First Class, and would be eligible for Top 500 if I wasn't a busy professional.
    Hundreds of hours and ~$240 later (1/6 of that value Playstore points) I'd say the time was worth it.
    Community was not quirky or toxic, the game ran as well as it could, yet surprisingly not as well on the highest end Android devices, and the predatory Gacha swore me off ever engaging with that ever again (I'd rather pay no more than $10-16 after taxes for an outfit set in any given game).
    The best feature Battle Royales should adopt is purchasing the first season pass and including the following season pass as an earnable reward.
    I suggested as much during the beta and they implemented it 😁.
    Gameplay may be unmatched in other battle Royales and wish it found new life on PC.

It also didn’t help that this title launched about 2 weeks before Fortnite had a major update with the launch of Chapter 3 Season 1 that a lot of people were looking forward to and it had to compete with Fortnite and while Fortnite is on every console which makes it more accessible with the First Soldier being a mobile exclusive it meant less people would play it. I have played First Soldier almost every day since release and it's one of my favorite games of all time now. Season 1 was a quite rough, but every update massively improved it and the gameplay and mechanics are incredibly polished at this point. They've added awesome modes like asymmetrical monster vs player battles where one could even battle as Sephiroth, sometimes fighting Cloud and they added objective based modes. The controller support is great and even the touch controls have very extensive options to accommodate personal preferences. I've gotten so many naysayers to try the game and they ended up loving it, including my own family members. It was refreshing to read the letters from the devs and see the transparency and communication between them and the players.
    The game has so many features I wish games like Apex and CoD would implement. The unique RPG mechanics such as customizing player personality and appearance, vehicles, weapons, etc, and killing monsters to unlock cosmetics was very rewarding. Plus the game actually allows you to EARN so many items, cosmetics and abilities which isn't often seen in free to play games.
    The game being mobile only essentially killed it before it even had time to expand and it's beyond sad to see it ending soon.

      I agree, there was a lot of good content and ideas in TFS, but Square Enix hobbled it by chaining it to the mobile platform (infamous for limited battery life, touch screen issues caused by the phone heating up, and others both personal and practical).
      Had A Team been allowed to expand into the console market, reception would have been less negative and more people would have played it to form their own opinions more than just judging the game by its premise alone.

When they should have also made it for steam on PC, PS4 and PS5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch with online cross-play and a roll back net code. But I feel Japan is currently behind on the idea of cross play and multi platform releases.

    I played it a lot (a lot for how often I play games these days) and I really enjoyed the experience. I don't think it was a failure in terms of enjoyment but certainly in terms of accessibility. The biggest point being, as seen in a lot of the feedback and comments below, is that it was primarily mobile based. If the game had been released on other platforms then I am sure we wouldn't be in the position we are in now where we have to say goodbye to the First Soldier.
    The other point I feel is that it was limited to the Final Fantasy VII world specifically. Again, not a failure in terms of enjoyment, but I felt this definitely limited the experience. The First Soldier allowed for a very action based experience fitting with Final Fantasy themes of magic, chocobos, and combat, but to keep that limited to FFVII held the experience back.I would have loved to have seen the Battle Royal experience include maps from other Final Fantasies.
    A battle royal within Balamb Garden? Yes please!
    So much potential was not explored and thats why it is closing. Hopefully this will inspire them to look further into it though as I would love to see an expanded FF Battle Royal on a wide range of consoles.

I definitely think the mobile-only release harmed it as a console or PC port would have made a larger playerbase a lot more fathomable. I know a lot of people disliked the idea entirely but I thought it was a fun game set in a setting I love and would have loved to see it move to larger consoles to become more accessible and easy to play.

    Not only that but the technical updates kept killing excitement. They put in Chocobos and might as well completely removed them from the game based on how hard they nerfed them to the ground. So many bad adjustments….
