I don't even do any of the quests, fights or anything, i just drive around nightcity listening to music before go to sleep. Bethesda Game Studios titles are forever in my rotation. Every year for the past 15-20 years I do a playthrough of at least one of their titles. Last year I did Morrowind & Skyrim, the year before it was Enderal (shout out to SureAI) & F4 and this year it was Daggerfall and a completionist Starfield playthrough. They are just my comfort games. And while objectively they might not be perfect (no games are I suppose), they just have this unique "spark" for a lack of a better word that just keep me engaged. And most of the time I can find at least 1 thing, big or small that I haven't seen in a previous playthrough. I only use bug-fixing/stability mods and keep them as much vanilla as possible as well.

    I'm currently obsessed with Wrath of the Righteous, loving a second playthrough, and at this stage am planning on at least a few more playthroughs for the mythic paths and slowly upping the difficulty and complexity each time - and it's completely down to this channel. I absolutely would not have overcome the barriers to entry for that game if it hadn't been for being a fan of this channel, and I'm so glad I did. (I found myself continually wishing that there were more of your build guides though, because I found them the most useful of anyone's by a considerable distance to learn the ropes with.) So thank you for making that one of these games for me (well, one day).
    I also feel you about Starfield, strangely enough. I haven't played it in a while, but it's an easy game to jump back into in that TV-show-you've-seen-before sense and go shoot some stuff up. It might be time for a reinstall soon....when I eventually get to putting down WOTR.

    Starfield is definitely a comfort food of mine at the moment. I fell off of my BG3 playthrough on the road to Act III because Act II was such a slog and my Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty playthrough stagnated when the recently implemented level scaling made stat based conversation choices ridiculous, locking me out of some of my favorite quest outcomes because I didn't min/max my character for that particular stat. Regarding Starfields flaws, for anyone else underwhelmed by the exploration aspect of it, I would strongly recommend checking out the "Desolation" POI mod available both on the Nexus and Creations menu. While it doesn't "fix" POI generation perfectly, it goes a LOOONG way to making the things you find on planets much more intuitive and somewhat more varied/unique feeling. Inhospitable planets outside the core no longer have all sorts of human settlements for example, and on settled planets the generation makes them feel more inhabited with fewer immediately repeating "dungeons".

    It’s funny as soon as he said Skyrim
    I knew that it was a comfort game for me that I think of all the time but rarely play now.
    But the game that I installed at all times on each hard drive with different mods is BattleTech
    I cannot help but restart a play through whenever I get the time.
    I think it’s the randomness of the start and the diversity between each sort of start whether you play clans or tanks or your favourite house.
    Its just the real struggle for the first few contracts,
    will I live will I have to swap out people will I have to throw away a mech because I can’t afford to repair them.
    It just hooks me and every time .

    Love your choices, especially Skyrim. I've pumped thousands of hours into every flavor of Skyrim imaginable over the years. It's like ASMR for me. Hearing good things about the new paid mod, Bards College stuff, and while I don't like or agree with mods being a paid thing, my 'virtue' is not going to get in the way if a good thing comes to Skyrim. Definitely my favorite comfort game over the years, and others that don't leave my hard drive would be XCOM 2, Elden Ring, and BG3.

    Skyrim is one of the comfort games I go back to time and again over the years. It is relaxing to post up somewhere and enjoy the nights in the temperate zones like Whiterun or The Rift. To me it's Diablo 2, AC 2-Brotherhood-Origins-Odyssey, and nowadays BG3.
    I’ve replayed ACII and Brotherhood the most, but I’ve spent the most time in Odyssey and consider Origins to be the best in the series. I know these games are very simple compared to Dio2 and BG3, but the atmosphere, nostalgia and storytelling are just too amazing.
    Diablo 2 always becomes an obsession when I start playing it, so I’m very careful with that. (For the same reason, I will never pick up WoW again-especially as a family man.)

    As for comfort games i play almost every day WARHAMMER 40,000 GLADIUS: RELICS OF WAR- 763 hours, BATTLETECH- 972 hours, FALLOUT 4- 1,579 hours, DYING LIGHT- 359 hours and many many more especially horror games like THE MORTUARY ASSISTANT and INFLICTION as well as war games such as AGE OF WONDER PLANET FALL, PANZER CORPS 2, STELLARIS, ORDER OF BATTLE, every WARHAMMER 40,000 game from SLITHERINE, action games like TERMINATOR RESISTANCE, ROBOCOP ROGUE CITY and of course STARFIELD which i really wish i could find more time to play. Looking forward to the STARFIELD DLC as well as the release of ZEPHON by PROXY who created WARHAMMER 40,000 GLADIUS: RELICS OF WAR.

    Solasta is mine. For all the mechanical complexity of the pathfinder games and the graphical awesomeness of BG3, playing through a simpler 5E adventure with well implemented combat works for me. Plus, the way spider climb is implemented is a total blast. Oh, and the Solasta battle cleric class always amuses me for some reason because it’s so OP compared to everything else in the game - it’s basically a cleric/paladin/wizard, but it’s one class 😆 A cleric that doesn’t need a free hand to cast, can use martial weapons, can divine smite, can cast fireballs, has extra attacks, oh and has paladin auras as well.

    • @XoRandomGuyoX
      @XoRandomGuyoX 2 месяца назад

      Oh? I haven't tried that, but maybe I should. When it comes to casting spells, even though DMs hate it when you point this out, according to the rules as written it is a free action to drop your weapon while one of the examples for your free object interaction during a turn is explicitly stated to be picking up a dropped weapon. In short, you're allowed to drop a weapon, cast your spell, and pick it up; at least during your turn.

    • @gr1mgr1n
      @gr1mgr1n 2 месяца назад

      @@XoRandomGuyoX I don't think "free" means unlimited though so picking up your weapon again would need to happen on the next round

    • @XoRandomGuyoX
      @XoRandomGuyoX 2 месяца назад

      @@gr1mgr1n No, it wouldn't. You get one free object interaction per turn, and picking up a dropped weapon is explicitly stated as an example. Letting something go is a truly free action. RAW you do both on your turn so long as you don't interact with other objects, such as doors. I get a DM's instinct to go, "No! Not in MY game!" But it works RAW.

    • @XoRandomGuyoX
      @XoRandomGuyoX 2 месяца назад

      @@gr1mgr1n They're two distinct things. The "free object interaction per turn" is separate from letting something go. Letting go is specifically cited as a free action. The whole thing about casting really just matters when physical shields are involved. Those specifically say that the tie up the hand involved and take a full Action to either don or doff. It's the same thing as to how a "two handed" weapon only needs both hands at the specific moment of attacking. You're completely free to let go with one hand and use it for anything else. E.g. a Monk using a Spear as a Monk Weapon can make unarmed strikes alongside the spear strike, because they can let go with one hand and have it available for other things. Anyway, you can still say you disagree, but it goes against the rules of 5th edition. That said, maybe WotC will change things with their 2024 update(sort of a 5.5e for D&D).

    Nice to hear that you still have time to play games for enjoyment. And since you asked, here are those games that feel like comfortable old shoes to me:
    (1) Dishonored 2. Both 1 and 2, actually, but Emily is one of my favorite game protagonists, and the gameplay fits my preferences perfectly.
    (2) Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2. I never get tired of the story of POE1, of which I was a major backer so there's that factor as well, and POE2's well-realized world.
    (3) Pathfinder: Kingmaker. I used to like its story better than WotR's but that appears to be changing right now as I'm replaying that latter game. In any case, one of the two will remain.
    Honorable mention for games I haven't played within one year but will return to eventually: XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Baldur's Gate (all of them) and Spellforce The Order of Dawn including its expansions, a very old and mechanically not very good game from 2004 which I return to for very specific reasons.

    I think games today are overly complicated. Way too many systems and mechanics to keep track of. Games just takes forever these days. the tutorials alone can take up hours in certain games..
    That is why I tend to stay with indie games, as they are made in the same way as AAA games was made back in the 90s. Simple, easy to understand, can be played in shorter bursts, and they are often not really meant to be completed.. So, there's no real pressure of having to get back into and complete the story mode, so it's a more relaxing relation ship I have with those games..
    Example.. I've started on Spiderman 2 with my son, we played maybe 4-5 hours, and it has been a few weeks now. And I'm already starting to pressure the kid "we have to play it again soon", or we will forget the controls, we will forget the abilities we have unlocked, and we will forget what happened in the story, so there's already now a pressure that we need to get back to it soon... I don't think that is healthy at all..

Like, we just got an open-source version of the game, a planet generation and hazard overhaul, and a very nice new mechanic/QoL feature in a "planet searching" tool added in the last year or so.
    Kingdom Under Fire The Crusades and its Heroes expansion/sequel. Old, the translation's rough, and the port's not the best by any means, but still one of my favorite RTS games, and I wish more developers made games with a system like it. Simple to learn, but damn did it get hectic once you got into it.

    Cool video. I find myself always coming back to the same games too. Mass Effect trilogy (usually end up playing the first two and never finishing the third though...) Bloodborne, Elden Ring and Doom 1, 2 and Doom 2016.

    Skyrim is by no means my favourite game, not even in the top 20, but I have thousands of hours played, 99% of which come from playing with overhaul mods. I do not know what the vanilla talent trees contain because I used SkyRe pretty much immediately after realising I simply do not like vanilla Skyrim.
    Nowadays, I've modded it with MCO and it plays more like dark souls than skyrim, I have a mod that completely reworks all the dungeons to be about 4 times bigger, Morrowloot overhauls most of the game, couple of different mods overhaul the perk trees, and generally almost no system in the entire game works the way it does out of the box. Everything from Smithing and Gathering ingredients to how the magic system is different.
    It's an absolutely amazing sandbox for modders, but the fact that I feel the need to mod the game so extensively to enjoy it kinda speaks volumes of how I feel about the game itself, and no amount of modding fixes the shit main story.

      What's the dungeon mod? Dungeons Revisited?

    My comfort game is HOMM 5. Yes, I know, I like the 3rd one, too, it was my first HOMM, but there's just something about the design and animations of the troops in the 5th one that really scratches an itch in my brain. So full of life. And the town screen panning around synced to orchestral music!

    One of my comfort games I know inside and out and always seem to come back to eventually is 7 Days to Die. I'll play until the late game, get all the best gear, solve all the horde night problems, and eventually set it down, only to come back to it months later and do it again, sometimes with friends. It's a surprisingly good game these days; the skill system is my favorite of all the survival games I've played.

    Skyrim and Starfield are classics in my rotation too. Fallout New Vegas, Baldur's Gate *2*, and Sins of a Solar Empire are other games I always come back to eventually. I've been playing Sins, for instance, since it released. I own a physical copy even, bought when it was new from a Fry's Electronics in Dallas, TX. BATTLETECH is the other one I play all the time but that one is for work these days so it doesn't really count for me.

    Good list of games. I think my comfort games have changed over the years, currently its Darktide and Total war warhammer 3. I can boot up TWW 3 and play few hours almost every day.
    My older games use to be Baldurs gate 2 and Icewind dale. Mostly Icewind, cause it was relatively short so..i think I've beaten that game 10+ times with multiple party variations
