I recently had a pastor's wife say something awful to me and then basically tell me to accept it and not to question her authority over me. In my spirit, it felt very wrong. Thank you for this confirmation.

I'd like to add a couple more:
*When you are not allowed to invite other Christians to the bible-study/church because your leader says they might have the 'spirit of argument' and might question them. You're not encourage to tell people about what happens.
*When you need to ask for permission before you do anything--what you do on the weekend, who your friends are, who you speak to about church/invite to church, if you hang out with family
*You get 'excommunicated' for hanging out with ex-members (who were kicked out without warning); or you get kicked out when you are no longer useful to their ministry (due to health)
    *you catch them in lies
*if anyone in church needs help, they drop them
*you can only be friends with who they are friends with
*they blame you that their group/church is not growing
**Yes--they say 'God told them' a lot, to get you to do/think whatever they want. And weird things: they can 'hear' people talking about them; they watch horror movies because God speaks to them through it.
It's been 9 months and I'm still healing from this. I don't trust people (especially church people) anymore and I don't really want to go to a church. Another friend had counselling, another is still in therapy and not doing that well. Not all this happened at once--it was bit-by-bit over the course of 4years till they were in complete control. This person has caused a split in several churches before starting her own. After getting kicked I felt a lot better/healthier--but I need emotional healing.

I'm in the same boat; I no longer want to attend to church. I'm traumatized by church. It's as if I'm being manipulated and forced to accept what they believe. It's been three years and I'm still scared because they told me that I wasn't following God's will. When I continue questioning them they just say, "There is no perfect religion, all of us have imperfection." And when I continue questioning them they just say, "Do you know being against the people chosen by God is a sin?" I tend to overthink things like, "What if I'm going to be late when Jesus comes?" Because that's always what they're talking about.

I was in a cult back in the 70s. These are right on. One other thing to look for is when and where they show up. If they have a big presence on a college campus, but not so much in the community, you know they are after people in situations of transition or crisis. I had CPTSD , and many other members had come from homes that had been difficult or disrupted. Scientologists (not my cult) apparently go to disaster areas for the same reason. People who feel insecure and alone, whose world has suddenly changed for the worse, or who have suffered heavy losses, are easy prey. Being in the cult was one of the loneliest and hurtful experiences I’ve ever had. It did not change my life for the better. It just deepened and gave new depth and dimension to my already traumatized psyche.

I would like to add that a cult leader doesn''t like to disclose financial statements. A church or a ministry is a non-profit organization and should not be afraid to disclose it's finances to its members. Although it's biblical that the tithes are for the pastor, I don't believe that having a mansion and a Rolls Royce with money from the congregration glorifies God. If they worked for it through their professional careers, that's fine, but not with the hard earned money of others.

Why is this so accurate? I came from a cult, been there for like 3 years. Given up everything thinking I'm giving the Lord Jesus my life. Turns out it's all for the leader's vision. I'm one of those loyals in the small group. Now, I'm very happy and free enjoying God's goodness and the freedom He won for me but at the same time enduring His loving discipline. Serving Him, rather than the vision and direction of the church. For quite some time, I was releasing the pain of people misrepresenting the Lord because for so long I thought God was unkind, cruel, hard, pitiless. But it wasn't that difficult because of the joy and amazement how the Lord opened my eyes. Who knows I could've been there 'til now if not for His tender mercies. I'm still part of a church now (that's a command), and I'm glad Jesus is Lord in that place, rightly dividing the Word of God. It's true we should always be careful not to be extreme on one side or the other. All glory to Jesus alone.

      John 4:15-26
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17 “I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”
21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you-I am he.”

I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. 19 Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I rejoice because of you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.
      Romans 16:17
Lovingly quickly leave, don't go behind, don't believe- obedience
Confused / red flags- don't do it all. No. Lovingly leave quickly n don't go behind and don't believe.
      Matthew 24:26
So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
      1 peter 5:2-3
Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them-not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

Also that when God speaks to us it has to align with scripture or in many cases is directly from scripture (a specific verse, passage, book, story, etc) So part of what Mark’s saying is no one has the authority to be adding a commandment or something. God absolutely speaks to us through His word and leading and through others we trust who reference His word but we just need to be cautious about when people say “God told me to tell you” that what they say aligns with the word.

I think it would be helpful if you mention that a cult leader does not need to have all 13 characteristics to be a cult leader. For example, most, but not not all cult gurus live in better homes or living conditions as their followers, especially those who live in the same houses, remote communes, or compounds as their followers. Charles Manson lived on the same dilapidated ranch as his group. David Koresh, Marshal Applewhite, and Jim Jones were also living in the same spartan living conditions as their cult members. Also, not all cult leaders have SMALL followings. Moonies and Scientologists are huge cults with many members, but they use the same mind-control techniques as a small cult uses, only on a grand scale.

    • @anonyarena
      @anonyarena Год назад

@@yyy-875 And, we can add to this, that not all cults are even religious in nature. Keith Raniere of the NXIVM cult did not even mention God at all, he only pretended to be a self-help counselor all the while he was slowly and secretly indoctrinating and brainwashing his followers. Imagine allowing someone to "brand" you with their "mark" as if you are cattle on a ranch. You really know you are being dominated and controlled, when you allow someone to burn their symbol into your flesh. Cults can also be political. Lyndon LaRouche was the leader of a political cult. Q-Anon is another political cult that takes this "blind-faith" extremism to the next level, where those followers don't even KNOW who this mysterious "Q" actually IS whom they are following, and yet they still take everything this "Q" says as the absolute truth, and anticipate the fulfillment of predictions, even as prediction after prediction fail to come true. If someone really is a religious person, they should know one of the warnings the Gospel explains is to beware of false prophets, and who can be more false than someone who's predictions repeatedly fail? It's really quite astonishing, to put such unshakable faith in an anonymous someone who flatly refuses to even tell people who they are.

    3. "God sent me to . . "
10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.
11 And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,
12 And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.
13 Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:
14 And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.
15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
16 For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake.
17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.
    -Acts 9:10-17
17 Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate,
18 And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.
19 While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
20 Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.
21 Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?
22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.
23 Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.
    - Acts 10:17-23

And when it is Spirit-led, it will always be for the person's edification, in service to them, giving out of love, or protecting the flock as their shepherd. It should never be done to manipulate, control or simply lord authority over others. That is the red flag.

Thus says the LORD who made you And formed you from the womb, who will help you: ‘Fear not, O Jacob My servant; And you, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.”
    ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭44:2
““Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, And his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: ‘I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God.”
    ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭44:6‬ ‭
“Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, And He who formed you from the womb: “I am the LORD, who makes all things, Who stretches out the heavens all alone, Who spreads abroad the earth by Myself;”
    ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭44:24
    Is Isaiah a Cult leader?

Before Christ to earth, there were those who mediated between men and God; mainly prophets, like Isaiah et al. After Christ, he became the mediator between men and God. However the gift of prohesy still should be there 1Corithians 14:1-2 and 1Thessalonians 5:20 (I stand corrected)

This is spot on! The fellowship I was in took a wrong turn when the pastors wife heeded to pride and was entertained by the though that she was one of the olive trees that stand beside the Lord of the whole earth.
She and all the leadership in that fellowship are now full believers in her calling and when one man exposed it to mature Christians the leadership swiftly told the rest to of the church not to have anything to do with those men as they were in rebellion and a very strong deception had come upon them and they were now doing Satan’s work to tear the church of God apart.
It’s nothing but fear tactics to keep the blind blind which unfortunately worked causing a lot of people to shun these men before they heard what their issue was all because they were afraid of being deceived.
The leadership now believe this woman is blameless and anyone who thinks not or disagrees with her on anything is deceived and sent by Satan to try and prevent her from her calling. It’s sad really that none of them can see that they’ve elevated her to a status of Goddess.

I love my church. You have to be a man married to one woman and have a family to be considered qualified to teach SS or be a leader in the church. I am divorced and 55 with many, many years of biblical understanding and experience. I'm not qualified to be a leader in the church but we have a 30 yo who is also divorced but has kids and recently saved within 6 months is deemed qualified and they are having him to teach SS and get involved with leadership. After about 6 months, he has left the church but I am still not qualified to be a leader in our small church.
Also, my adult SS teacher is, admittedly, a big sinner who likes to drink, has a hot temper, not patient, and can barely talk. He is 75 and married with grown kids who have nothing to do with God. Fruits of the Spirit? None. Not a one. lol.

Unfortunately, with all due respect, i find that Christians have a very outdated and extremely biased understanding of cults. This is a big problem since it is often people who are very drawn to religion who can go through a period of life where they are likely to be vulnerable to cults - including dangerous cults.
I urge pastors and priests to look into the secular research on cults by sociologists, psychologists and religious studies researchers. Set aside your religious and sectarian biases and understand what they've learned. It's a complicated field but you can save lives.
    Here are a couple basics:
    - there are multiple definitions of cult but the best model is focused on what makes cults dangerous and disregards theological concerns and looks beyond the old definition which was focused on the single charismatic leader. It's called the BITE model and it identifies a checklist of all the forms of control that a cult can assert - over behavior, information, thought and emotions. There's a checklist for each of those categories. The more checks on the checklist, the more controlling and dangerous the cult.
    - The model will disturb some members and pastors of some religions and denominations. Why? Well, it is more of a sliding scale between extremely controlling cults and extremely open and liberal religious sects. So all religious sects and denominations can be ranked on it. And inevitably, some Christian deniminations will be higher on that scale than they want to see themselves.
I would hope that if this is true of your denomination, you would consider reforms or even leaving it. But i know that can be a hard thing to do.
But there's no harm in giving it some thought. After all, the goal should be to help people live better spiritual lives, right?
The BITE model of authoritarian cults and control. It's your best starting point.

The turning point for me was George Bloomer's "Witchcraft in the Pews". The book was about 20 different mind tricks that they're used in toxic churches. 19 or 20 of those were happening in the church I was going to. Was convicted to leave.

So I've Been Praying About This Situation I Had In A Small Christian Home I Was In. Well The Pastor Would Always Send Us Guy's And Girls To Church Every Saturday And Sunday... But He Would Never Step Foot In The Church Himself. When I Asked About It He Was Not Going Because He Said the Pastor At The Church Preached On Once Saved Always Saved. But My Ex Pastor Is Supposed To Be Our Shepherd And Lead Us And If He Felt That Way. Then Why Didn't He Pull Us From The Church As Well!?

A cult leader can also be a conglomerate. Mormon's have their "Twelve Apostles" and Jehovah's Witnesses have their "Governing Body".
