    Not sure if anyone mentioned, but it was held at a metro station (aka bomb shelter). And obviously acoustic might not be the best, but also it's very cold in there, which probably affected the performers and their voices a lot

    Thank you for this video- I’m Ukrainian and I voted for them, cos I listen them and I think their style is really for Eurovision. But this voting every year in Ukraine it’s like sport for us- a lot of people very into it, a lot of talented musicians and good songs, we have many holy wars in Twitter about it - so preparation for Eurovision is always big fun, big concerts - and now this stage was in basement, in metro, in cold noisy place right after day of mass attack from russia … it’s possible only in Ukraine to do this voting, to create this festive mood even during war. And for me this song about hearts of our people, from Ukraine, from Mariupol, from Azovstal

    This song was actually chosen by popular vote. We voted in our "government in smartphone" app for which song should represent the country in Eurovision. The song is about resilience, about taking a stand when it needs to be taken. Eurovision is a bit scared of politics. And though war, in my opinion, is not politics, but rather the reality, making a statement about our stand on the war in such a gentle manner is important. And the only victory that truly matters to us is ending the war, with all our people and territory freed from captivity, with all the war criminals and perpetrators brought to justice and reparations so that we may rebuild our homeland, treat our people and try and help the environment that has been so badly affected, so that our society may begin the long road of healing after this horrible war. And this performance is a great way to remind people that on the Eastern borders of Europe there are people, same people as all over Europe, who are forced to fight for their freedom and their right to build their country the way they see fit.

    I absolutely didn’t expect anything like this from the Ukraine either but it is absolutely what I needed tbh.
    It was my favorite from the National Selection and it’s totally different than what they usually bring indeed.
    Catchy, radio friendly, up to date, not so heavy on the heart and ethnic which it usually is (not that there’s anything wrong with that but I like this for a change).
    Also not war related, which I hoped it wouldn’t be, although the whole situation in the Ukraine is I think maybe worse right now than when last years Eurovision was being held.
    I can see this doing very well at Eurovision.
    Ofcourse not knowing what the other 36 countries are going to deliver, but yeah.
    I really like it and I can see myself definitely voting for this.
    Loved your reaction and I’m glad you liked it too ❤

    • @natastudyN

      For some reason, most Eurovision fans say that Ukraine usually sends ethnic songs, although IN REALITY only the last 2 representatives at Eurovision had songs with folk music masterfully merged with electronic (Go-A) or rap (Kalush), and of all other years, only Ruslana (2004) and Verka (2007) had Ukrainian ethnic elements. The rest of Ukraine's entries were very different but had NO Ukrainian folk elements. Ukraine has a wide variety of music, so don't limit your expectations to folk music only. :) The only thing about Ukraine at Eurovision is always true: Ukraine is unpredictable and sends very different songs with great staging.

    • @natastudyN
      @natastudyN Год назад +11

      There are a lot of meanings in the staging, starting with the key words "Heart of steel", which were inspired by the heroic defenders of Mariupol, whose last resistance base was at the steel plant Azovstal (AzovSteel) with very deep bomb shelters. And radioactivity sign is also a symbol of constant ruZZia's nuclear threats, including taking over Chornobyl and Zaporizhska nuclear power plants by ruZZian invaders, shelling at the nuclear plant, and regular threats of using a nuclear weapon by terrorist state ruZZia. The lyrics can be interpreted in different ways and the brilliant staging links them to today's reality of war.

      @iuliiacherniak3083 Год назад +14

      I am glad that this year we can show that our culture is not always that folkloric and we have more to show to the world. However, being Ukrainian I see this song pretty related to war. Azovstal is one of the plants that produced steel in Ukraine and the defenders of Azovstal became a legend. So for me this song is about them, fighting no matter what, as they have heart of steel. Though basically it is a song about every Ukrainian. Cause we all are fighting now and while I was listening to it, it felt related to me. I understand how strong I've become and I also have the heart of steel. A bit of my thoughts on the topic:) However, I think it only feels like that when you are Ukrainian. I see a lot of meanings in this song and you are free to see the one you like)

    You are probably unfamiliar with the context of "stick middle finger up in the air", the story behind it is that at the beginning of the war, the soldier on a tiny island surrounded by russian warship that ordered defenders on the island to surrender responded with "russian warship, go f*ck yourself", which then became very popular as at that point it was clear that russians don't understand any grown-up or democratic argument, if they don't get that attacking and occupying an independent state is not ok, we are not going to persuade or ask for mercy, we don't care what they say, or how seemingly big and powerful they are, we will stick a finger up and say you won't get us, we will fight back till the end because we have a heart of steal (here, there is a reference to Azov steel, which is another sign of Ukrainian heroic resistance)

    I think a reason why this won over more ethnic songs is that Ukraine wants to show that they are part of the Western world, which I would classify as Ukraine's second-highest priority in international outlook, after being 'definituly NOT Russia' (this box is ticked by all entries as Russian language was banned this year in Vidbir and anything pro-russian would not come close to selection).
    On top of that, it is a song about Ukrainian bravery and Ukraine standing up for not only their, but also our rights, values and freedom. As pointed out in other comments, 'heart of steel' refers to the Azovstal Steel plant that formed the heart of the Ukrainians in Mariupol as the Russians besieged it, TVORCHI also mentioned it was around these events that they wrote the song. Something that can go unnoticed for those who don't know is the red-black symbolism present in this and other Vidbir performances (most displayed by Krutь) which stands for the red blood turning the soil black, an alternative Ukrainian flag.
    That said, Georgina, your more personal interpretation is a great way to take the song too! I would recommend you also take a look at the opening of the Vidbir show, even if you don't understand what the voiceover says it is very impressive and I also loved the shared performance of 'Oy u luzi chervona kalyna' by all contestants and the main producer

It's very hard there now at the moment, and Eurovision is like a ray of light there for many people - a moment to forget about everything, it's a hugely popular event. Although they are not able to host it this year, at least they can send some musicians to represent their country and keep the awareness about the invasion going. I think it's the right decision 💙💛

    Hey, this song is quite standard, but it's Ukraine so it should win every year. right? that is the way the televote works, right?

    Very disappointing entry, I was expecting better considering Ukraine’s late entries and how excellent they have been. Missing the ethnicity, worst Ukraine entry I can remember :(

    Espero que no surja de nuevo el voto-lástima !!!
    No merece ganar de la misma forma que el año pasado no merecía ganar!!

    Ukraine will get votes because of the war.. the song is irrelevant (but in the national selection were some better songs)

    I don't really like it, just feel like the chorus is kind of nothingy... *but* they are doing a revamp, so hopefully they can improve it and add more oomph!

      many Ukrainians agree with you. but the jury told them that the song is incomplete, so we hope for improvement

    weak song, from which they try to squeeze some sense

      The sense was there at the start, you just missed it. :) :( The lyrics can be interpreted in different ways and the brilliant staging links them to today's realities of war.

      It was missing a lot. Has somewhat of a nice beat and vibe in small parts of the song but otherwise is very bland, not original and strikes me as an odd choice from Ukraine. No ethnicity, disaster :( this could have been performed by practically any music artist.
