My full face helmet has saved my jaw and teeth several times. Nowadays there are also many lightweight enduro full face helmets, I think there are few excuses not to wear a full face helmet
Ah no way that’s my helmet at 9:49 ! Glad to see it made it to you guys @specializedbicycles. Sorry for the long note though… I was trying to keep it short lol. That wreck ended my season but I’m back up and riding with another tactic this year. Great video!
I have the same reasoning and I almost aways wore a full face until I realized that I rode better with the half lid. I've now switched to a light weight full face but I still miss the half lid. Great content as usual.
I have always worn full face doing uplift days, open face for the local hill riding. One day at the pumptrack however I managed to slip a pedal while manualling a straight of rollers something I had done a million times, ended up unconscious for 5 minutes with a broken jaw and 2 missing teeth, plenty of cuts on my face aswell. Put me off the bike for a good while and had some concussion related issues alongside a minor brain bleed that kept me in the hospital for close to two weeks. I now wear full face on the pump track because I am genuinely scared of concrete. I'm still wearing the open face in the foods when I'm not going to crazy however. Just goes to show how the riding you are doing has much less of bearing on the severity of a crash to what people normally realise. You are always in a position to get seriously hurt if things go wrong bad enough.
Remy likes a half shell helmet for when he's going slow - probably 1% of his ride. However most of his crashes have been at speed and it's only luck that he's not hit trees or rocks with his head. Please wear a full face Remy so you are able to keep producing great content.
A decent full face is so light and well ventilated nowadays, I see no reason not to wear one when riding anything even remotely close to what Remy rides ... I don't care how good you are, it's only a matter of time. Might not be so lucky next time, but so long as you understand the risks and make an informed decision, that's all I can ask from anyone. Just like how I think someone is crazy for riding with a half shell, a lot of people think I'm just as crazy for riding what so many of us ride. Just like Remy though, it's a risk vs reward, and that's up to each individual to decide on their own.
I've given myself two concussions from face planting with a half dome. Granted I'm terrible but that was on very minor features. I prefer full face now lol.
exactly, I don't even own a half shell helmet, honestly I don't see the big difference in weight, ventilation and convenience. Just think where the risks are, minor crashes barely hit above the chest-body armor might be more important than helmet, medium crash hit below the eyebrow - so the bottom half of the helmet is more important, big crash break necks so the whole full face helmet+neck brace. So I really can't see where a half shell fits perfectly. A half shell has all the trouble of wearing and carrying a helmet but only 20% of the benefit. that's too inefficient to me. If I think my riding scenario is too safe to wear a full face, I will just wear a hat for shade. It's like only installing air bag on the roof of your car, you have to be crash upside down to be able to active it, and when you do crash that hard, there is no air bag on steering wheel and a pillar, so you die anyways.🤣
Yesterday, a grasshopper flew into my mouth halfway down a run. Distracted me enough to hit a rock and go otb at 20+mph right into a pile of rocks. I didn't always wear my full face but I always will now. Luckily i chose to wear it yesterday. Proframe cracked and dented all along the lower part of the jaw. I'd be eating through a tube right now if I didn't have it on.
If only you could’ve known about yesterday’s crash…good to hear it wasn’t very serious. Seeing your bloody face reminded me to wear a proper helmet for the type of trail and riding. Hoping for easy and quick recovery.
Being someone who has always road gravity based styles (dh, freeride and enduro) you should always wear a full face when the terrain calls for it. It doesnt matter how good you are as a rider, one lapse of judgement or mistake riding in a half shelf helmet on terrain that requires a fully and you could be rewarded with a lot of pain and also titanium in your face like i have got. Please be safe out there mtb family ❤
I and my buddies have had a few crashes over the years and we would have definitely ended up with serious dental and or jaw injury if we weren't wearing a full face helmet. That's why they're good and that's why many bike park insurance requires them to be worn.
taking DOT certified motorcycle helmet without EU certs and comparing it to your's would never be fair comparison. DOT is self-certified standart and there's no governmental control over it in USA. Morover it's outdated AF. So referencing it is just -karma points for a professional helmet designer. ECE22.05/22.06 is by far harsher (like orders of magnitude we're talking here)
I appreciate your authenticity and that’s what attracts me the most to your content. Being a good rider, but always being up front with where your risk management says no; being a salesman for products, but being factual and genuine in presentation of that. Props.
Great informative edit. Helmets are super important and I can understand your desire to go with the half-shell over the full face especially when you are so use to the sights/sounds. I think you're supposed to edit out the "3,2,1 stuff" Remy. :)
Great video. I always wondered about the difference between a moto and a bike helmet. Also, I appreciated Remys honest response on his prefering an open helmet while acknowledging the risks involved.
DOT helmets also have to slide across cement at highway speeds and hopefully not wear down to your noggin. That hard shell wears better in that application.
I prefer the footage you get from a chin bar mounted camera, it has the right balance of trail and handlebars so you can see what the rider is doing to control the bike but unlike chest mounts their arms don't cut off the side of the picture as much.
@@jeffminnich3291 True. Also, compared to a chest mount they are naturally better stabilised and point in the direction you're looking in, the same as any helmet mounted camera but IMO the best of both worlds. One advantage over top mounted is clearance when ducking under low branches. The only disadvantage(s) is having the weight further forward on your helmet and maybe hitting the camera on your bars on really big compressions/drops?
@@jeffminnich3291 Another important consideration is safety of course (a bit more on-topic for this video) and IMO more studies need to be done but personally I'd rather have a broken jaw or even lose an eye that have a brain injury. I'd guess that crashing chin first is fairly rare, you're more likely to instinctively turn your head away from the impact? Having a camera between your head and a rock can be bad, just ask Michael Schumacher!
@@sandy_knight well, actually, chin first isn't too rare. I hang out at a local DH type park. Most folks just wear the chest protectors, i use the full jacket with arms in it. I've seen multiple folks wreck onto their chest and slide face first. Not sure how that affects a chin mounted camera, but a chest mount would be very bad in those situations. I too like the chin mount best so far with FF but Remy's under viser is a great view. I'm looking at that now.
Recently got the specialized tactic 4 after I realized I did not want a shitty normal bike helmet to be responsible for protecting my most prized possession, my brain.
I am a mediocre rider. Nowhere near his level. But I have broken the front of 2 full face helmets after some unfortunate miscalculations. I would likely have a few less teeth if not for wearing full face.
Just bought a Tactic, amazing price and fit for a MIPS helmet, extremely comfy, only thing i would say is I'd like to see a maglock catch, but for the price, i won't complain!
Love my Gambit I got one recently it feels like a half shell on the head with a big gap for vision the chin bar only just sneaks into my peripheral vision which is nice. Although the sizing chart was way off so had to deal with returns process which took 2 weeks from where I bought it. My head is 61.5cm so on the limit of the Large at 62cm. It was way too big, would fall down over my eyes just walking about so way too dangerous to ride in. Returned for a medium, fit perfect with the medium though.
Another excellent video with very relevant info, keep em coming. I’ve invested in a full face for more spicy stuff, but wear a decathlon rockrider half shell for my more xc days. I did a lot of research before buying it and for my budget it was the best option. I’m a massive advocate of making helmets law for cyclists, any type of riding, being informed about what helmets do, and which helmet we should be using for each situation. I catch hell from friends because I wear a full face. They say shit like "did you have to turn in your man card when you bought that?". Thing is, we are in Colorado, this isn't amateur stuff we are doing, we dont go slow, and there are zero trails without exposed rock. I love the video but i hate when any testing is done in house. They have an institute where they test in the university its always better and more credible for a consumer to have a non biased testing from a third party
I wish I knew about wheee to put the questions he’s asking. Biggest thing I’d like to know is these enduro full face helmets. They say dh certified but how do they stack up to “real” dh helmets and bike park use
Looking into Specialized helmet, but cannot stand the enormous "specialized" graphic. Little bit curious about the concussion sustain for Finn with S helmets.
If you've been watching Rémy for many years, he writes his own stuff. English isn't his primary language, but he speaks many different languages. Most Americans only speak and write English so it's easy to critique. Most Europeans speak and write at least 2, mainly native and English. It's not uncommon for Europeans to speak 3-4 languages and write English and native. Because France, Spain, Germany, Italy, and Austria all neighbor each other and trade,/commerce they all speak multiple languages. Because most global trade is primarily based on the U.S. dollar, most nations speak English as a second language. Rémy always gets a pass from me 👍
did he change it? I didnt catch it. Give him a break, we're here for the mtb not the english. He speaks in english so that you can understand him, not because it is his only language
Im curious if you feel the same way after your recent crash? I just had a freak crash on a trail I knew well, and smashed my face into a rock. I believe a FF would have protected me better (luckily I am okay). So going convertible now on trail rides - regardless of it being heavier than a light weight full face (I don't like climbing in a full face)
I respect your opinion Remy and love your videos, but don't think this video was appropriate. Especially for younger riders who mimic what the pros do. Accidents happen and with lightweight, breathable full faces everyone should be promoting them when riding downhill.
@@er1cj I agree, but I was riding trail riding on my last crash.. On an easy trail going slow accidents can still happen. Should you be on a full face at all tine? Probably, can you? probably not
Under the visor perspective doesn't look right in my opinion. When filming in very wide FOV, under the chin or chest is the only thing that looks natural to me.
Yes that's true. It's the eternal search for the compromise. The advantage of the chin is the lower FOV which looks like a more natural height with such wide fields of view. The same wide field of view which gives a sense of speed and movement because of the peripheral vision. An advantage of the chin is that the head acts like a natural gimbal. In my opinion, the best most natural looking POV placement is the chest. But the downside there is that chest mounts are more sensitive to make jerky moves on impact. Camera on the visor makes it feel like you are somewhere very high on the bike instead of in the perspective of the rider. Mais c'est juste mon avis. 😉
Someone I know makes the same kind of argument to justify not wearing KNEE PADS.... 🙄 It's all about what you're used to. If you only used a FF helmet you'd get used to it and have no issue with vision or hearing.
I always say "make the excuse to not wear your half-shell vs. making excuses to not wear a full face." I'm baffled when friends insist on wearing a half shell because we're doing some fire road climbing to trails that otherwise would qualify as double-black/pro line level at a bike park.
I think wearing full face helmets are where helmets were a couple decades ago. I’m from the generation that helmets were introduced, and certainly were seen as optional, and definitely “not cool”. It took a long time for me to wear a helmet regardless of my ride, I started with “well, I’m on the mountain so I’ll wear it, but when I just cruise on a flat trail I don’t need it”, now the helmet goes on 100% of the time I get on my bike. I have an open face and full face, and when I upgrade my full face to something way better ventilated, it’s unlikely I’ll wear my open face again, there’s too many benefits to the full face to not wear it.
Great video, however, as an automotive engineer that has performed testing on thousands of components many of the question regarding fit and replacement should have very specific/definitive answers. Seems like Specializes legal department should review for liability.
As we were talking about helmets Fox rampage 99 X2 one as spare 2024 Bell MOTO -10 for my LTR 450 Which my GF brought me for my birthday I nearly had a heart attack when I seen the price expensive but you can’t put a price on love or your life 😂😂
Dear Rémy, thank you for the valuable and interesting content. A bit unlucky the audio did not turn out very well, it is a combination of room acoustics and microphones used. There are resonances of the room that make it harder to understand, brain needs more resources to differentiate the audio and you need to turn a tad louder. You could use either acoustic treatment or a mic screen, and/or mics with better directivity. But you could also attack those room resonances with an eq in post production - there are certainly tutorials on yt about that, how to identify the frequencies of the room resonances. Of corse you can also move to a room with better acoustics. :P Last step would be to turn up the volume with some slight compression so the neighbours don't fall out of bed when the commercial kicks in :D Hope this is constructive and helpful, thanks again and greetings from Black Forest :)
After using them for bmx racing, i recently moved to full face + neck brace for all my mtb rides since most of the times i ride alone. I have now lots of responsabilities since i am no longer a 17 years old but a 28 yo and the peace of mind that knowing i am as protected (still free to move with as much range of motion as any rider would like) as i can be at the end of the day allows me to experience the same rush as when i was 17yo but being able to free the mind from the adult worries we all have. I live in Spain so there's a lot of heat, solution? i put the helmet on the bars when i'm climbing together with efficient daytime managment to avoid the hottest hours. Have a nice day you all
Wish companies stamped a born on date to each helmet, and to let the customer know what the max life timeline is. Especially since every company has different things to say about how long a helmet lasts🤙
I have a huge head and though I do have a specialized helmet that fits well, I haven’t had any luck with a full face by any company. I have had crashes where I sure wish I did have one.
Grateful to have been able to travel to Squamish the last 3 years and see some of your lines at Alice Lake. Tons of respect. Thanks also for this video and all the great content. I’m a mountain bike instructor who has had about 700 clients since I’ve started my business. I have about 12 stories of riders of various abilities who wish desperately they would have had a light weight full face on. They say some face protection is always better than none. So glad to hear you will be wearing face protection more often. This same transformation has happened in motocross and football since I was a kid. Wish you the best!!
Starting to think your recent big crash might have been a PR stunt for Specialized helmets 😂 Great video though, will be looking to these guys for my next helmet.
Could specialized please make an ice-shelf helmet for hot summer days? 😆 Would love that, since i'm often sweating like hell when it gets above 23-24°C when riding... Cheers from Switzerland
I’ve been wearing a lightweight full face more often over the past 6 months. Breathability is good and it has the magnetic clip for the chinstrap, so easy to remove. I totally understand your comment about feeling the speed. A half shell allows you to feel the air on your face to gauge velocity. I bought a Tactic on sale because it safety tested so well. I’d like a longer/lower visor, but it’s up for fitting glasses. And the side straps join right at the bottom of my earlobe. Otherwise, nice piece of kit!
My full face mountain bike helmet is my dirtbike helmet, kali shiva 2 carbon, I had a fox and a leatt mtb helmet but I was always back to my dirtbike helmet, getting old probably gonna get a new Kali...

I’ve smashed my face on a rock. If I hadn’t been wearing a full face helmet I’d have no teeth and my jaw would have been destroyed.
A RUclips freerider should only show himself with a full face. Period!
i bought a tactic helmet recently and its genuinly the most comfortable helmet ive ever owned, Even tough i wear my full face more often.
Glad to hear
I prefer a fullface even when going slow so i can go home without a fucked up face no matter what happens. Slow fall face first onto a rock isnt cool.
Très bonne vidéo de sensibilisation à la sécurité à 🚲 👏
I love the video but i hate when any testing is done in house. They have an institute where they test in the university its always better and more credible for a consumer to have a non biased testing from a third party
pity the Dissident 2 does not come with holes right next to the ears...
Am I on drugs or why did the Gambit not enter the conversation? I ride one and it's the holy grail.
Old plastic soda bottles and a fistful of tie wraps are perfect for crafting things like mudguards or visor extension 😜
Too many "Are's"? Haha
I wish I knew about wheee to put the questions he’s asking. Biggest thing I’d like to know is these enduro full face helmets. They say dh certified but how do they stack up to “real” dh helmets and bike park use
no , unfortunately i tested it and believe me they are not as protective as real dh helmet (2 concussion later)
Remi-Pacifica-Quand?=p
Looking into Specialized helmet, but cannot stand the enormous "specialized" graphic. Little bit curious about the concussion sustain for Finn with S helmets.
When did Finn had a concussion? A great helmet limit concussions but does not stop them.
typo in title? 🤔
@@landonlewis5918its also his job and I’m sure he’d like for it to be correct.
chill out yall! I know english isn't his first language. Just pointing it out not here to start any arguments
Damn you are right. Correcting it now,
Im curious if you feel the same way after your recent crash? I just had a freak crash on a trail I knew well, and smashed my face into a rock. I believe a FF would have protected me better (luckily I am okay). So going convertible now on trail rides - regardless of it being heavier than a light weight full face (I don't like climbing in a full face)
I still feel the same. It was a very low risk ride, I was not focused.
Respect
Really? There is so much motion on the chin
Please include some questions for the shop dog next time
Rémy the goat
what are the glasses you have on in the thumbnail please?
Remy it's a half sheLL not a shelf
Oops
Someone I know makes the same kind of argument to justify not wearing KNEE PADS.... 🙄 It's all about what you're used to. If you only used a FF helmet you'd get used to it and have no issue with vision or hearing.
I always say "make the excuse to not wear your half-shell vs. making excuses to not wear a full face."
I'm baffled when friends insist on wearing a half shell because we're doing some fire road climbing to trails that otherwise would qualify as double-black/pro line level at a bike park.
I have an open face and full face, and when I upgrade my full face to something way better ventilated, it’s unlikely I’ll wear my open face again, there’s too many benefits to the full face to not wear it.
it depends if you want a half face or full face.
Great video, however, as an automotive engineer that has performed testing on thousands of components many of the question regarding fit and replacement should have very specific/definitive answers. Seems like Specializes legal department should review for liability.
As we were talking about helmets
Fox rampage 99 X2 one as spare
2024 Bell MOTO -10 for my LTR 450 Which my GF brought me for my birthday I nearly had a heart attack when I seen the price expensive but you can’t put a price on love or your life 😂😂
Fox helmets are currently on sale, like up to 40 to 60% off depending on the model and scheme, time to stack up 😂
@@LaurentiusTriarius Thanks for the info
Have a nice day you all
I prefer a full face, dont want to mess up these good looks😂😂 just kidding i cant afford to lose anymore teeth.😄
I have a kali fullface ,very light weight and ventalated ..i use it always ,even if i only go 1 Block down the street
I saw a redbull helmet
Cet accent Français 😆
Ouais c'est incroyable putain je supporte pas
My 661 FF is claustrophobic. I dislike goggles for the same reason. Sigh
Excellent no bull video. Please create and post more videos with industry experts.
My full face mountain bike helmet is my dirtbike helmet, kali shiva 2 carbon, I had a fox and a leatt mtb helmet but I was always back to my dirtbike helmet, getting old probably gonna get a new Kali...
Tactic 4 ❤❤
Thank you for doing this video!! Very informative!!!
shelf? lol
Nice helmet mtb sir...
I have switched from SBC helmets to another brand because of very uncomfortable fit of a new Ambush helmet compared to the old one.
It's very personal. On my end they seem custom for me.
"Heroes in a half shelf... Turtle Power!"
Well that video aged like a milk really quickly
Broke my jaw wearing a half shell….
The new ambush helmet has the ear straps too far forward and the rear strap always touches the ear. Total misconstruction.
Each helmet can't fit everybody. The new Ambush fits me to perfection.
Remy should be sponsor by redbull by now!
My full face saved me from knocking all my teeth out a couple months ago. And that's not the first time. I will never understand people who wear half shells.
