They did interior attacks for *THIS* fire? Goddamn those firefighters either had titanium balls or their battalion chief was a complete nutter or both. Absolute bang-up job by the interior attack teams, though, especially with the building on the left. Those guys could probably give a clinic on how to do interior attacks on a heavily involved structure. This wasn't "surround and drown" this was a bona-fide pincer maneuver and it worked to perfection. Even the guy operating the remote nozzle on the aerial was all over this. He wasn't just leaving it static and spraying one spot, it looked like he was specifically aiming to support the interior attack team. I want these guys in my town. More of this please!
They have some solid balls but I feel like there has to be at least a little tinge of crazy for anyone who chooses to enter a burning building. Massive props to them though. I truly admire these men and women. I thanked every firefighter that I could after my family's house fire. They did an amazing job of saving our home. We only lost one room. Absolutely fantastic, brave, honorable people.
This is how things get done when there is competent on scene command and engine and truck company crews who understand fire behavior and building construction. This was one of the most impressive results that I have seen while watching these videos for at least the last ten years. I retired at age 60 in 1994 from a volunteer department for which my youngest son is now a full time paid director of EMS and will be fire chief as of April 1. The mission statement was, and is, "What is not burning when we arrive will be unburned after we leave." Obviously, it doesn't always work out that way, for a number of reasons including firefighter safety, but that's how results like this are obtained.
It never ceases to amaze me how fast fire can travel through a structure and what mind-boggling amounts of water it takes to put it out. The left-hand building was scary, you could almost see a great beast crawling along the top biting off great chunks and throwing them on the ground. Not being a FF I watch these carefully to see what they are doing and I don't always understand why they do what they do until later when I see the result. It is easy to say "they should do ..." or "why aren't they doing ..." but to understand I have to wait and see the results.
Criticism of the fire crews is a little harsh... They did not BUILD these matchwood houses - greedy developers did, who used the cheapest materials available. This is true in most parts of the world - so to say wood-&-paper structures are just a US phenomenon is incorrect. Here in the UK, wood and board is still extensively used, and houses are precariously close to each other... again... developers trying to squeeze as many "cheaply-built" properties onto the available space as possible. Regard for fire-safety is often an after-thought. When places like this catch fire, it develops rapidly. Fire crews turn up, and it takes time to connect to hydrants, set up the lines, get the pumps going - and at the same time some are inside looking for trapped victims. While this is going on, you can't spray water at exceptional high pressure from the outside. In the early stages, this just sprays they fire around, and besides... the immediate need is to save lives. Next step is to see what properties are vulnerable, and to try minimise the fire spreading to as-yet unaffected buildings. Only then do you start to tackle the major fire itself - and by that time it is usually an inferno. The blazing buildings are already a loss, so the effort must be towards limiting the potential of the fire spreading. These crews took all the right actions - and some of them exposed themselves to very high risks. They did a very good job, and while the armchair critics look at what happened AFTER the event, the odd error that they make is no basis to criticise. They have to make decisions on-the-fly, in very stressful conditions. Ultimately they not only prevented this from spreading too far, but they brought the inferno under control fairly rapidly.
Well... that's funny. I live in the Netherlands. Pretty much all buildings are brick buildings with fire retarding materials or build with metal h-frames and metal side panels with fire retarding materials. They still burn to the ground in most cases. So, these old "tinder" buildings, in the end, doesn't matter for total loss of the building. It does help with slowing down the initial start of the fire, so people have more time to get out. But it doesn't really save the buildings.
Where's the criticism ?? Edit...I stand corrected but take absolutely no notice of JB as no one else does. He's a piss and wind troll who criticises just for the sake of it. Unlike JB I was a wholetime Sub Officer at the busiest two pump station (no special) in Europe at the time and in my opinion that was a damn good stop given the type of structure.

Massive respect! That fire was ANGRY. Not content with raising those houses: it wanted to get up and out! Wow. You have self vented fire storm at one end of the building and things almost normal a few feet away. That is what I call CONTAINMENT. The radiant heat alone would floor you, if you were on the opposite side of the street. If they were isolated buildings, I would say... they're done, lets just contain the sucker and let it burn itself out. But an urban area you don't have that luxury. You really need a water bomb, to knock it down. Going in and fighting that fire head on for control of those buildings! Wow! What guts! This is spine chilling awesomeness!
Amazing work by the FD. At first I thought it was going to be a case of just protecting the exposures, but those guys went in and took care of business. Again it points out the problem with having frame buildings built so close together. The 4th building was slightly farther away from the rest and that probably helped to save it.
Back in the late 70's I rode with Newark when they still had the Auxillary Program in affect I was with 29 Engine and 10 Truck up in the North Ward we caught a job just like this on Hawthorne Ave we lost 6 buildings we had to deal with high winds and low temps the temp was 1 degree above zero with a wind chill factor of 5 below the initial alarm came in via Telephone box alarm station 4542 Hawthorne Ave and hunterton streets

Next thing I saw was water coming from inside knocking the fire down on an amazing fashion. Then I see water hitting the next house with water from the original fire building. These people are truly amazing. Very nice work !
NFD holds no guards and takes no crap from the fires they put out from a day to day basis. These are a tremendous group of men and women keeping their city in one piece still today. They've progressed to be stronger, faster, and better than they ever were before. I recall their biggest fire from a few years back. The whole block was on fire. Almost looked like a plane went down. Still, they fought with superior strength. Please God, continue to keep them safe and continue to bless them with the courage, strength, and knowledge that led them up to where they stand today as where it all began for them.

Wonder if the owner of these three buildings is the same owner as the surrounding dwellings. The others seem to be built mostly the same, and yet these three burned houses don't appear to "fit in".
All I can say is that the interior firefighters kicked butt on these structure fires! It was impressive seeing interior firefighters in left building suppress a hell of a upper level and attic fire and then turn their nozzles out a window ( I assume) and assist fighting the ragging fire in middle structure. Very impressive interior fire attack--and a lot of structure was saved too! Great job!

its almost fortunate in a way that the bldng on the far left was involved...once they got the main fire there knocked down it gave them the perfect angle and height to attack the "main" fire in the other bldng
To extinguish a burning flame, the standard is to attack the bottom up. But I believe it depends on the location and scale of fire. In this case, it is the ariel combat that has been able to suppress the fire by reducing the fire temperature, cooling everything down prevented the fire spread and allowed to extinguish the fire.
Your wrong, the suppression was from inside and the crew pushed the fire back onto itself if you watch the 1st house there working the fire to the back left hand corner, the 2nd house the same and the 3rd the same...what you want is to contain it in one area on 1 floor because if you cant you'll loose the structure, the aerial wasnt used because the crews were inside and the stream is to dangerous its used when all crews are out of the building...
That was great determination by those firefighters against a huge multi-building determined fire, using their interior attack! I just wish that chopper would have moved their positions more often to see the "C" side of structure with all that action going on!
Great job 👏 all of this guys are honestly did a wonderful job and really I am surprised to see that how they hold that place from everywhere and forced on fire to stop.

In the first part of the clip I was thiking: wouldn't it be more safe to figth fire in defensive manner instead of offensive? 😳 feeling a bit uneasy for the firefigthers inside the first building. 😥
Tom Reid When did you ever see an aerial monitor in use whilst an interior attack is under way? If you have then the OIC needs a kick in the balls. Too often I have seen crews doing an effective job withdrawn in favour of aerial monitors only for the fire to spread through lower floors. Nothing, absolutely nothing, can beat effective internal firefighting and given the type of structures involved this is one really effective internal attack.
Views provided by TV Channel Helicopter, as the wind from the COPTER-BLADES fan the fire, keeping it alive and spreading as Fire Fighters risk their lives.
Amanda, the fire is spreading inside the structure,. The roof , sometimes is the last part to give way!! This depends on what floors are under fire!! Plus when they go in they are looking for people, and pets!! They talk to the Chief with radios, he will tell them to leave the building before spraying from the top of through windows!! Water pressure from the hose and degree can take a person down so this is why they don't just spray from the top!!! Hope this helps you understand this a little better!!!
how does a crew inside know their stream of water is going out the roof and not hitting the fire? The crew is in the dark smoked filled house… are there spotters outside to tell them? Why can’t the TV new crew in the air share their onsite video.. ?
I have seen so many of these severe domestic American fires. I always respect the fire-fighters, but isn't it time the American Government introduced laws to destroy these potential death-traps and construct properties only with non-inflammable fire resistant and fire retardant materials and possibly including sprinkler systems? Thirty odd years ago, I visited America and was taken to look at new housing developments with a view to buying a large new house. They were built with nothing but rubbish, so straight away I decided no way would I invest there. Even last year and this year I saw reports of forest fires and fire-fighters being unable to save lots of homes. When will their authorities ever learn? My sympathies go with those who have lost their homes and wish them a Happier New Year than seems possible at the moment. I did not realize that this incident occurred in 2018, but the situation has not changed by 2022 and my good wishes go out to all who have suffered from fires and hope their lives improve.
Good video but they really need to rethink on how to communicate in the current world. Water shooting out, tower rig flooding a non fire area… communication is needed. The management system needs to be brought into the current century… we can fly and have cameras in the air… use them… get a link!
WOW I hope that there is no one in the houses and I hope that everyone is ok and I hope that everyone is not hurt in the frie from Gabrielle Rivas from Roslyn heights ny
People talk about the distance between houses and your totally correct. But cities only care about tax dollars and your land tax is cheaper than building taxes and apartments pay even more. Most local property taxes have 2 parts. Land and building so in the past they only worried about money. If these get torn down when they rebuild hopefully new ordinances will give wider distances. But its ridiculous how our former city governments allow this. This is how cities get 100s of people to live in small areas. No worries about how they live but the money is good
When you can't see your hand in front of your face sometimes when your waving the nozzle around the stream going to go though holes and windows up in the air.You obviously have no clue.

Views provided by TV Channel Helicopter, as the wind from the COPTER-BLADES fan the fire, keeping it alive and spreading as Fire Fighters risk their lives.
Single hand land at front spraying low? What is he doing?
I understand they know what they are doing but can't help scream in my head "get out and let them spray it from top!"
Hope this helps you understand this a little better!!!
good grief why do the houses have bars on the windows and doors ? jails?
how does a crew inside know their stream of water is going out the roof and not hitting the fire? The crew is in the dark smoked filled house… are there spotters outside to tell them? Why can’t the TV new crew in the air share their onsite video.. ?
skiqsr when youre inside you can hear the water hitting stuff above you. If the sound goes away you know you aren’t hitting anything
Good job.
Good job !
Buildings burnt in toast
Great Job NEWARKS FINEST
Looks like they repaired the first house and boarded up the rest.
officerdean
Good video but they really need to rethink on how to communicate in the current world. Water shooting out, tower rig flooding a non fire area… communication is needed. The management system needs to be brought into the current century… we can fly and have cameras in the air… use them… get a link!
NFD one of the best in the country sir!! They obviously knew exactly what they were doing!
I have to hand it to these Firefighters, They're going into fire, and fire is very Unforgiving.
I guess this'll tide me over
Newark news - it seems Newark burned to the ground last night, killing everyone there!!! Film at 11
Got that aerial ladder, with a nozzle on it No water. No Tower Ladders??
WOW I hope that there is no one in the houses and I hope that everyone is ok and I hope that everyone is not hurt in the frie from Gabrielle Rivas from Roslyn heights ny
where are the ladder trucks????...for multi story houses ,ladder trucks should be there first .
Warum ist es dort erlaubt, die Häuser so nah beieinander zu bauen?
Brennt eines - brennen (fast) alle...
Must have been Friday night. These mofos wanted to go home on time. Great job!
I Pray no humans or pets are involved.
The buildings are So close together.
No worries about how they live but the money is good
Unlabeled aerial Ladder is good for what?
THINK FIRE FIGHTER DO A AMAZING JOB. THEY ARE SO EXPOSED TO SO MANY HAZZARDS. GOD BLESS THEM ALL. TRUE HEROS
What highly effective streams. Not one piece of air was lost.
What are you talking about they did a amazing job
When you can't see your hand in front of your face sometimes when your waving the nozzle around the stream going to go though holes and windows up in the air.You obviously have no clue.
Good joke my man! lol people are way to serious in the comments of fire videos.
William Heinrich ahe thinks she can do better. She's probably narcissistic. I thought and think firefighters do an amazing job always. They are what you call true hero! God bless them. They put themselves in great danger everytime they are called out.
I think she is praising the firefighters, but what I don't understand is her "Not one piece of air was lost" comment.
