In this video I go through the step by step process of restoring my 1979 Suzuki GS 425 fuel tank. As you can see it had some very bad rust areas inside and out! I used Evapo-Rust to eliminate all the rust and it worked amazing! Once fully sanded I sprayed the tank with House of Kolor primer/ sealer followed by nardo grey, white and seafoam base coat. Lastly, everything was sealed with 3 coats of House of Kolor clear coat. This tank now looks brand new and should compliment the rest of the bike well! Stay tuned for a full rebuild timelapse once the Suzuki is finished!

I'm starting to dig this color, it has a 90's feel about it! Bold build!
Glad you like it! Definitely a unique color combo but I think it will be great to stick out from the other bikes 😎
Amazing this job
Awesome work!!!
Thanks Bruce! Appreciate you following along with the builds!
Fire! Nice work
Thank you 🥰
Been following you on insta and really like what your doing. I’m restoring a K100 and got very helpful replies from you regarding paint removal. Keep it up!
I appreciate you following along and I’m glad I was able to help! I’m starting to get parts together now for my next K100 build 😎
Looking forward to it!
nice work
The small stripes (is that what you'd call them?) you put under the emblem look fantastic! Just a heads up, you can dilute the evaporust with water and it still works good, just takes a little longer. I've done 75% water and 25% evaporust and in 48 hours the tank was squeaky clean. Of course it depends on how bad the tank was in the first place, but at $20 a gallon for the evaporust I try to conserve it myself. Love the builds man, I'm really excited to see you finish this, even more so since I picked up a '76 400.
Awesome thanks for the tip with diluting the evaporust. I have used it in many applications and it has always worked really well! I'm getting into the final stages on this build. I hope to have it completed and back on the road by the end of July. I will do another video of the entire build from start to finish!
that's awesome bro
Thanks man!
Amazing results! I'm looking forward to seeing it finished.
And did I spot a K100 in the background?
That might be an 88 K100 👀 it is patiently waiting its turn after the Suzuki is finished.
Nice work and vid Mike, I'll be tackling this on the R tank very soon. Looks about the same condition 🙄 hope it turns out as good 💪
I’m sure with your skills you will knock it out scott!
@@BayCityRestorations Cheers mate but I might have to get some more info on evapo-rust from you as I can see some in the tank 😉
Incredible Work Bud !
May I ask how many PSI’s you are running to the Sander and Spray Gun ?
Actually, what size Compressor are you using would help.
Thanks
Thanks man! I have an 80 gallon Husky Air compressor. I typically run the air sander at 60-70 psi and with the spray gun it really depends on what your spraying but usually I set it to 30-40 psi for basecoat/clearcoat.
How are you i got a good 650 i need a seat and I've been looking on ebay and that seat you got looks like it fit cause I don't want to eliminate the i dont know what is call but that seat has the curve that hopefully fit the bike where did you get it
Very nicely done! Did you have any rust that went through the metal completely? If so, is the filler plus paint enough to fix this enough for a tank to hold?
Luckily these old tanks are made of very thick metal so all the rust you see in the video caused deep pitting but none of it went through completely. If you have rust that goes completely through you will need to do additional work because paint/filler will not be enough to fix it. The gas fumes would eventually cause a bubble underneath.
Nice job! I'm excited to try Evaporust on my CX500 chrome. You got a nice result with your spray gun. May I ask what gun you use?
Thanks UM! If you check the first pinned comment in the video I have a link to the spray guns I'm using. They are devilbiss finishline series. The smaller purple detail gun that was used to spray the seafoam color is just one that they sell at Harbor Freight.
@@BayCityRestorations Thanks! Again, nice job.
I didn't realize how expensive paint was! Even though I have an HVLP, i'd probably just use high quality rattle can with a 2 part clear coat, but I only have 1 bike to do.
Paint is damn expensive! And you are right sometimes if you are just doing a tank or a fender it’s easier to use spray cans and then just put enough 2k on that you can sand back and buff the orange peel.
did you paint the frame the same paint as the tank? i want to paint my frame but i dont know if i have to use powder paint or acrylic will do
I used powdercoat on the frame. It holds up much better to scratching and fuel than paint does. I got an automotive paint store to paint match the powder coated frame so I could use that to paint the tank.
Just strip the frame down to bare metal and send it to a powder coating shop.
Yes or most powdercoating shops will sandblast your parts for an extra charge. This will ensure proper adhesion.
What paint remover are you using?

What did you do inside the tank after the evaporust?
Rinsed with gasoline a few times and that’s it. The evaporust neutralizes and leaves a thin film on the inside so that is doesn’t flash rust. If you really wanted to go the extra mile you could do caswell tank sealer to guarantee it never rusts again.
@@BayCityRestorations never realized the evaporust leaves a film. I cleaned out my tank with oxalic acid and the thing didn't just flash rust. It flashed to rust. Looks like I'll be getting some of this stuff soon ☺️
Yes! this is the best stuff I have found for derusting just about anything!
What is episode 3?
that was an editing mistake
Killing it! Good video! Go visit my channel and drop a sub if you enjoy it 🕹
