      I just upgraded my internal SSD instead. SSDs aren't that expensive now, and if large amounts of storage is needed it's even possible to use the 2280 adapter. NVME ssds will always beat SD cards. But the criticism is fair of course, they messed up with the SD port.

    Just bought the Ally 2 days ago, perfect timing! It’ll make FPS games awesome.
    Wanted to recap a couple of useful features for maximum performance on plugged/unplugged:
    Disable memory integrity, this gives a massive boost to fps (just don’t download shady stuff because turning it off decreases security) - Also drastically increases battery life when unplugged
    Use Silent Mode when unplugged, with the rest of the settings above and below. This’ll give you 2-3 hours in most games at 1080p med / 720p high 60fps
    Fix crackling noise when in silent mode 10w - Turn off spatial sound (mmsys.cpl) main speaker, properties, turn off spatial sound
    Enable manual mode and turn up all TDPs when you’re plugged in -> max fps
    Don’t forget to increase the VRAM when you play GPU memory intensive games e.g. Call of duty -> evens out your .1% lows
    Turn off v-sync, let VRR do its thing. Turn on FreeSync in the AMD Adrenaline driver.

      @@cabbage3412 I’ve read that ASUS confirmed that units starting with serial no. R8 & above were fixed - this relates to the sd card reader on the motherboard failing due to heat and they replaced it. I would take it with a grain of salt, but I would recommend trying a smaller/cheaper variant and if it works under heavy load, then swap it out for a card with bigger storage later.

      No brainer at that point lol. You’re getting a significantly more powerful device that’s has an incredible community to be not ashamed of and you can mod your device in a lot of ways just like the Steam Deck.
      I have a 90wh battery from the Asus G15 laptop and fitted onto my Ally and now I get amazing battery life. Sure it’s a bit heavier than before but not as heavy as the Steam Deck LCD model. My next mod is to do a 32GB LPDDR5x ram upgrade with the faster 7500mhz speed.

    • @ekinteko
      @ekinteko Год назад +3

      @@DoubleDragon5180 Please make a showcase or video about it. The faster RAM will help the iGPU, and extra RAM might be useful to increase texture quality without affecting framerates. Does the battery mod you done, fit into the original case? Or is it hanging out the back like a Frankenstein thing? I've heard of people putting thermal shielding to stop the microSD from getting fried. And some people attempting certain mods for better cooling. All combined will make it an "Ally Pro" that is certainly user oriented.

    • @DoubleDragon5180
      @DoubleDragon5180 Год назад +3

      @@ekinteko I would like to that as well. I’m currently in the ROG community on Reddit to find someone to do the RAM upgrade. Need to mod the bios to read not only the faster speed but the bigger capacity as well.
      As far as the battery goes, yeah I had to get a custom made backplate to fit the bigger battery. It’s a 90wh battery from the G15 laptop from Asus. I was trying to to the 100wh battery from MSI it was not compatible. I did nothing to the SD card slot as I don’t have any issues with it and I did the SSD upgrade to fit PROPER m.2 2280 SSDs. Slowly but surely I’m making my own ROG ALLY PRO lol.
      Also it’s been confirmed that the 120hz on the Ally can be overclocked to 175hz which is nuts for this device.

      The Support from Asus on the Ally is here, no need to fanboy for the SD everytime (I had it so I love it as well).
      The SD was crap as well when released and became much better over time.
      The same can be said for the Ally, I don't get why Valve and Asus must be considered differntly at this point.
      The SD issue is a design flaw (mine is working fine since 6 months now) and they have replaced every unit with the problem under warranty.

    As somebody that has used a rog ally for the last 6 months and just switched back to a deck OLED i have to say this is excellent to see, they have addressed some of the things that make the steam deck a more refined experience, the standby improvements should be a great change, the on screen monitor was desperate for an upgrade and change up so thats excellent to see and overall i think you are right, credit where its due, Asus are working away on refining this machine and it is slowly paying off. Would be nice to see them refine their button mapping to be more in line with what steam input offers, maybe even something like online custom made community setups that people can download in a similar fashion to what can be done on steam deck, that would be amazing, im often blown away by community made setups on deck for games not controller compatible that are a nightmare to get dialled in on the ally so that would be wicked. But im just not sure how deep Asus are planning to go with this and its why the deck is still the peak when it comes to user experience.
    I still think the deck is a better experience overall, especially with the OLED but this is meaningful from Asus, much needed improvements... i hope they can squeeze more from that battery, im not sure why you estimated 2.5 hours in dead cells, on my Ally i got somewhere around 4 hours at 7w, 50 percent brightness/volume and that was pretty much a best case scenario and i thought that was pretty bad, 2.5 hours would be terrible on a game like dead cells... the OLED deck will be around 10 hours in the same scenario (at 90hz though not 120), so its clear that Asus need to improve battery if they can, seems like they are making that effort though, great to see.

    I’m so glad that the ally is getting official support of gyro. It’s a great feature that has been downplayed on handheld pcs that feature a gyroscope.
    Gyro as joystick is fine, but I prefer mapping it to a mouse because of the fact that they translate to each other well (they’re both displacement inputs). This does often result in keyboard bindings most of the time.

Personally I just ordered a Crucial T500 2tb, and will be using that with a right angle adapter and extra heat protection. The T500 was the best choice because aside from being fast it actually runs quite cool and doesn't consume a lot. On mine I'm only going to use the SD card for games I can run at 10 W silent mode, or maybe not use the SD card at all. I haven't had problems with the SD card but the times I tried 25W turbo mode even after a little bit the heat was noticeable and its a pretty safe bet it will cause problems in the long run

      ive had an ally for a while now and just switched back to OLED deck, the deck is for sure a more refined experience there is no doubt about it, but with these updates asus is making meaningful positive changes and that great. It has the power but with that power comes large negative impacts, playing on the go for an hour max is really no fun, every 5 minutes you open the overlay and see like 5 percent dropped, no exaggeration, it almost feels like you can watch it go down in real time, so them making changes to cpu boost shows they are working towards a more efficient on the go experience which is much needed. I mean... its still not close to the 10 hours i can get out of the deck oled in dead cells for example but its a positive move forward. The ally for sure looks better in some games due to the resolution, for example cult of the lamb looks way better on ally than my oled steam deck because on deck the grass shimmers and it looks bad, but for 95 percent of games the OLED is just another level, especially in the dark.
      Id say the deck OLED is still the one out of the two but this is great steps from asus, the more refined and closer that experience gets to the deck the more it all comes together, enjoy the Ally man, its a great choice.

    I've been using gyro as a primary camera control on steam deck for a while using one of the back buttons as a "clutch" to disable it, so it feels kind of like picking up a mouse to reposition. It is actually surprisingly effective for fps style games, and gives a lot more accuracy compared to an analogue stick for me (though I will admit I'm not that good with analogue stick aiming). I think it's something that takes a week or two to get used to, but it really does feel like a mouse for the most part once I got used to it. The main thing I change is changing the turning axis to roll only, because combined yaw and roll can confuse things if I use the device in different postures.
    Glad to see that gyro seems to be working well on the Ally too! Good to have some genuine competition in the handheld space.

      My no.1 pick would be oled deck, but the price in my country is more expensive then the ally, same with lenovo , around 30% more then ally, i pick ally and just enjoy it till steam sold officially in my country. Im confident will not clear my backlog even when the ally 2 or deck 2 comes later on 😂😂

    I wish you could toggle cores, So that you could choose 16 to 8 to 4 cores. so they could boost higher or draw less power... So that the GPU could have more.

      There’s only 8 cores. But I get what you’re saying. You can enable and disable cores with threadripper CPU’s. I complete agree with you.

      You can, uninstall all the rog crapware and use handheld companion. It's had full gyro support, core control, smart shift (cpu/gpu power ratio) and all the features the hardware can do since about a month after asus shipped this thing with their half baked software.
