The poison basically makes you miss your attack every time (which is why Blooper misses every time when inflicted by it), that's why ya gotta avoid it. Unless you use a 1-Up Mushroom as seen in the video, which cures the status effect
Well guarding also blocks the status effect. You can also give him a status that stuns him(or Dizzy), or use the Frog Suit to dodge the attack entirely

Ironically, you show more strategy and strength of gameplay doing this than following the game's actual rules. I think this one-time attack thing would be easier to swallow if any other part of the game even resembled the old way. Like with Super. Super was a platformer instead of turn based. That's literally the one core difference of its whole design.
Yeah, the game design is pretty weird where boss fights are very hard until you find the thing that counters them, then they're super easy. Collecting stickers for them to instantly go away is weird, but I kind of like it even though it can be tedious at times.
Also, can we talk about how AMAZING the Blooper boss is? The whole forest is affected by them, which makes their reveal incredibly intimidating. The boss claps along to the music in complex patterns, interrupting your own rhythm. If it clapped during your attacks, it would’ve been even better. But I loved dodging the attacks. They were all rhythmically telegraphed and rewarded people who could “clap” along to the music correctly or even noticed it in the first place.
The song slaps as the boss claps. The music in this game is pretty good in general. I love the Megasparkle Goomba song and how it starts with a cowbell
I personally think it’s one of the worst bosses ever, just because you pretty much can’t win in an intuitive or intended way without the sponge, and once you use the sponge, the battle becomes free and there’s almost no way you can lose
@@zanmolecules4105 I actually really liked beating the boss the unintended way. It provided a ton of challenge and strategy I wasn't expecting. I essentially had to nail the action commands, and blocking was crucial whenever the poison attack was about to happen. By the end of the boss fight, I was entirely out of stickers. Easily the hardest Paper Mario boss I've played so far (I haven't played TTYD and Super yet though).
You mean like it was intended to play it this way? It's a lot more fun this way for me now but if I did this when the game first came out, I probably would have given up.
I want to see indie game developers to take Sticker Star’s combat and improve upon it. My idea is instead of using a sticker book you use a spinning scroll where the player selects 1/3 area of the roll using stickers for the turn. You can use permanent stickers on the side which decreases in power the more you use them in battle but can be repaired. The sticker scroll has a special power to move stickers up or down so attack combos are easier.
Well, the Hopslipper is the closest thing to an Infinijump you will ever get. Even the base damage of 10 if you land all action commands isn’t bad either, and it is because it hits many times that it does the most damage to bosses beyond overpowered stickers
@@BarelyAlec One thing i noticed is that the Battle Spin cost 3 coins, and if you get 3 coin symbols you get a bunch of coins, so it's useful to farm coins if you know how to time it right.
This is really interesting, I was wondering if it was possible to defeat any of these bosses since one of the main complaints with this game is that it seems like you *need* a thing sticker to beat them.

@@BarelyAlec I always thought that the things you need to defeat the bosses were somewhat obvious, the only part I remember needing to look up were the hieroglyphs in the desert tower. Still, there were a few that were very confusing.
@@mugfan9779 I think the only ones I didn't look up when I first played this game were: the snowman because fire/heat stickers are obvious, and the goomba since it's pretty straightforward with or without a thing sticker. I also looked up a lot of the puzzles because some of them are pretty weird in this game.

Color Splash required its version of things to even think about damaging some bosses. I tried making a video about not using them but it's impossible in that game (at least to my knowledge).
You know, this game surprisingly has the best way to defeat bosses out of the three modern Paper Mario games. It gives you a nice Thing to defeat you to win but you can also defeat almost every boss without a specific Thing that works best on them. Normally this is a sought-after feature and usually makes people who play the game declare the game to have a deep battle system, or at least a fun battle system. However, it has not done so for this game. It is clearly because the game dissuades from using anything but the correct item. The only boss you could reasonably try this on without being discouraged is Megasparkle Goomba, and Kersti tells you that you should have used the correct thing. By that point, Tower Power Pokey comes back and makes it super hard to defeating without using the Bat item because it’s falling attack does so much and you naturally do so little, blocking doesn’t help, and even crumpling doesn’t seem to have much effect. Sticker Star is more interesting than more people give it credit for. You can even do reverse boss order without glitches because you can actually gain access to World 5 before you even defeat Worlds 1, 2 and 3. It’s a shame that people ignore this fact because of its many flaws and that the other games “follow in Sticker Star’s stead”. This game is still very bad, but not with interesting facts.
Yeah, the game goes too far with making the player believe the correct Thing is necessary in defeating most bosses. When I played this game for the first time, I had to look up which one to use on a majority of the bosses because they seemed impossible to me without them. It's weird that the game goes as far as to have Kersti tell the player that there was a more efficient way to win the fight instead of congratulate them for not relying on the instant win button. Unlocking worlds out of order is pretty cool and something I only heard of recently. I'm going to be doing a viewer requested challenge in this game and I think that might come in handy.
Gooper Blooper without Sponge is very doable. And I wouldn't call fire or infini sticker weaknesses of Bowser's Ice Statue or Petey Piranha particularly puzzling, considering how many options you're given with them. Then there's also bosses like the Big Scuttlebug that I don't think even have one specific weakness
I looked up this challenge after watching TRG coliseum and, honestly did this myself in my spare time. It’s not easy but god damn is it fun. But the pitch up...the pitch up...but on another note. Things actually have action commands as well. Even the MUSHROOMS!
I had a lot of fun with this challenge since I remember having to look up which thing sticker to use as a kid after not being able to beat the boss. I'm just bad at the thing sticker timing and am embarrassed that I didn't know about the mushroom action command
Recently i watched some Bowser challenges and discovered... Mushrooms do have Action Commands! If you do an Excellent in: Big Shiny 1-Up, your 1st heal heals 20HP. Shiny Mushroom, it heals 60HP. Flashy Mushroom, it heals 99HP. I don't know how much Normal Mushroom heals if you do an Excellent, and also Normal Big 1-Up, and i don't know if it has Normal-sized variations and a MegaFlash 1-Up.(maybe not)

i actually tried replaying this game recently with a special ruleset: im never allowed to use battle spins i never use thing stickers unless absolutely necessary I got to around chapter 3 doing that, and i keenly remember megasparkle goomba being a genuine challenge where i had to actually think about my moves instead of spamming offensive stickers, it was a really nice change of pace for a game that was otherwise really underwhelming.

I was wondering, is it possible to defeat the Big Cheep Cheep in the port without an Infinijump or Thing Stickers? If it helps, you can first strike it if you jump at a certain angle before it lands on you on the overworld.
Yeah, I love how this challenge makes the bosses more interesting too! When filming this I tried to kill the Cheep Cheep with those restrictions but his health cannot fall below a certain threshold in his first phase and that's when he goes into the water which requires the thing sticker to get him out so you can hit him again. So as far as I know it's impossible with those restrictions but I could be wrong

However, I remember the fishing hook only made it vulnerable rather than dealing a massive amount of damage to the fish, so I suppose it's not too bad for a challenge run. Currently, I'm trying out a 20 HP No Thing Stickers run of Sticker Star, so once I catch up to the port (currently only at Megasparkle Goomba), I'll try to experiment with it.
@@decadrud I remember a lot of mini-bosses requiring thing stickers. Like in the first fight against bowser Jr you can't do enough damage to him to finish him in one hit without the scissors sticker and he'll heal back to full at the end of every turn. Good luck with your run it sounds like it'll be difficult!
She even insults you if you use things that aren't the intended one for the boss. You can beat some of them on the first turn if use the boom box, squirt gun, and pretty much any other thing. She'll still say it was inefficient.
TLDR: this guy is a madman and the bosses in this game are insane This is probably the most insane thing I’ve ever witnessed along with the bowser fight. Mega sparkle goomba and Petey piranha are manageable without things or infinijumps. The bowser snow statue is a little less manageable because they designed the boss to be fought with the radiator, oven, hair dryer, and basically any other heat emitting thing. Tower power pokey is where it gets bad though. The boss has so much health and unlike bowser statue, it doesn’t have a certain few non thing attacks that it takes crazy damage from. This makes the boss a lot harder because it’s basically a damage race where you and him go back and forth endlessly, chipping away at his health slowly as you try not to get slaughtered. The boss was not meant to be dealt with without the bat. It’s obvious because of how much damage it does. The fight is still possible with a good strategy and playing well. But the gooper blooper fight is just unbelievable. If you don’t know what you’re doing and don’t have the sponge thing, he WILL hit you with poison and you will be lucky to hit the boss ever again after that. I once fought gooper blooper without the sponge and he hit me with his poison and I never hit him again after that happened. I must’ve wasted about 20 stickers, every single one of them missing before I died and finally got to refight him with the sponge. The boss must’ve been planned to be fought with the sponge. But the battle is really stupid because once you use the sponge he gets locked into the same purgatory! He can’t hit you! Apparently there is an answer to this fight? There’s no strategy, it doesn’t matter because the developers want you to play the game exactly how they wanted you to. This game is something else
Yeah, a lot of the bosses feel like the developers wanted the player to find which thing stickers counter them entirely. I remember having to look up the correct thing stickers to beat the bosses when I played this game the first time. But that's what makes the challenge of not using them fun I guess.
@@BarelyAlec yeah and that’s one of the gleaming problems with this game. It doesn’t allow you to have your own preferences or strategy, you have to do what the game tells you it wants you to do. Most of these bosses are free with things like the boom box combined with the squirt gun, plus things like the bowser statue being slaughtered by fire. It’s fine to add those weaknesses in as a small touch to reward the player for finding them but it’s a problem when that’s the only way to beat them without throwing 15-30 minutes down the drain using hopslippers.
@@BarelyAlec reminds me of hooktail in paper Mario the thousand year door If You don't get the cricket badge stat wise she is actually stronger than the chapter 2 boss ( and she is the chapter 1 boss ) However by bringing A LOT of healing ítems and a Solid strat You can win without said badge
These fights are flawed on a fundamental level because the difficulty level switches between 'extremely easy' and 'complete bullshit' all depending on whether or not you happen to have an attack that just happens to erase the boss. It's still leagues above Color Splash REQUIRING their use; even if it's stupidly flawed, at least you have a choice here. Regardless, blatantly weighting said choice with fights like Gooper Blooper makes it seem like playing without them was the result of a mistake rather than an intentional choice, which they then 'fixed' in the next game. Even if what you said is largely repeated from the 'Everything wrong with Sticker Star' video, it all stands on it's own because the system they have for the boss fights is terrible.
I really enjoy the sticker system, I think Kersti was a fun companion, and I really don’t mind the simplistic story (even though let’s be real the base story is barely any different from the original Paper Mario), but the lazy pseudo-puzzle boss thing is really lame.

I thought it was alright for the first two hours as a kid, but the more it went the more stroke inducing it felt. I don't know if they were trying to reboot the series after the guy who made the first three games left, but they clearly didn't play test it to see what the fuck was wrong with it.
Mega-Sparkle Goomba: I beat it without Things on accident... I didn't know about the Scissors funny enough Tower Power Pokey: I ran out of stickers in his fight. Gooper Blooper: After using the sponge I had a hard time fighting him especially because I'd be poisoned (I was bad at blocked when I was first playing Sticker star) Mr. Blizzard: Yeah went all in on fire thing stickers Petey Piranha: I don't even remember his fight at all.
From what I've heard a lot of people didn't know the scissors are Mega-Sparkle Goomba's weakness. I think there are a lot of ways to stop Gooper's poison. Mr. Blizzard hates all fire. Petey is a weird fight since you don't have Kersti.
Probably nobody will see this since the video is 3 years old, but I find it pretty interesting that no Things are necessary to beat the bosses. I remember really needing the sponge for Gooper Blooper tho :') Also, I managed to do the Bowser fight without any thing (but with Infinijump, to kill the Womp, actually I learned that we're supposed to use the scissors against it after beating bowser for the first time lol). The part with the lava pool takes FOREVER if you're not prepared, and I wasn't, but it was pretty interesting
When I played this game the first time I remember having so much trouble with pretty much every boss and having to resort to google to find out which thing countered them. If I remember correctly, Tower Power Pokey and Gooper Blooper gave me the most trouble back then. Nice job beating Bowser without things! I've heard that the Eekhammer actually beats the Womp in one hit, but didn't know that until after my Bowser no things video.

Don't ask why but I started to replay this game and I used the scissors on the first boss and that did not happen. I used it at the right time and everything and it just did the damage and that was it. It's not a big deal of course since it's a free boss either way but I just found it odd 🤔
As far as I know, you need the Scissors to beat that first Bowser Jr fight since he heals to full health every turn and you can't do enough damage to beat him in one turn without them. If it's possible, I think it would require some kind of sequence break to get more powerful stickers before the fight. I could be wrong though so if you're trying to find a way to do it, good luck!
@@BarelyAlec I believe either a Big Shiny Jump Sticker or a Flashy Hoppslipper would have defeated him. A regular Shiny Jump Sticker does exactly 19 damage.
I recently attempted The Big Cheep Cheep Boss. Unless there is a way to defeat that boss thingless, that means 2 thing stickers are required to beat Sticker Star.
@@goldenyoshistar1 I don't think you can beat Big Cheep Cheep without the hook unfortunately. I think you're right that two are required; one for the Bowser Jr fight and one for Cheep Cheep fight.
Knowing you can get the trumpet without fighting the first boss, is it possible to bring an infinijump to every bossfigh and beat them that way? What about the boombox?
Replaying the game without things in battle is a very fun challenge, I'd recommend it! Honestly if the game had more strategy instead of spamming these overpowered stickers with unskippable cutscenes, the game would be much more fun. Thing stickers even make exploring very annoying, always needing a very specific one to progress or find secrets. The game would be much better without them at all.
Yeah, especially if you're replaying the game then not using thing stickers in battle is a lot of fun! And I agree that needing certain thing stickers to progress can be annoying. This game had me lost so many times without that
This also makes me curious if its possible to beat the first Bowser Jr. without the scissors in any way. I remember attempting it but I wasnt getting anywhere. If not, the scissors and hook are the only required things I can think of, unless you can beat the Cheep Cheep without it going into the water.
I originally was planning on this being a no things in battle run, but I believe the bowser jr. and Cheep Cheep fight are the only two absolutely required things here. You can't do enough damage to bowser jr. at that point in the game before he just heals to full and cheep cheep can't be damaged until you hook him back to land. I could be wrong though and there might be a way to beat one or both of them without things
I’m probably really late but I’m doing this challenge myself as I’ve done it years ago (no things minus for boo bowser jr and cheep cheep, no infijump, no heart blocks, no running, and fill out the museum in full) (kersti is def allowed at the final boss though because of how well it ends off the fight and it’s just very rewarding) and I gotta say tower power pokey is probs my favorite boss for this challenge, mainly because it showcases how amazing poison mushroom is as a sticker as well as pow block It literally just cancels all his attacks and is very fun to work around AND does 7 damage when pokey is afflicted, it’s a very powerful and underused sticker Same is almost said for pow block I never realized how great the status effect it gives until I did the challenge
That's a cool challenge! It still makes me a little sad that some minibosses require thing stickers to beat. I haven't used the poison mushroom much myself so it sounds like I've been underrating it too. Pow blocks are amazing for their status allowing you to jump on spikey enemies!
I honestly didn't know that either until I did it. I was planning on crumpling for the extra damage with a hammer that turn and healing the poison the following turn with a 1-up.
As a little kid I didnt always pay attention to the fact I needed things and made the bosses a bigger challenge than they probably should've been, lol. Same with certain mini bosses like the Cheep Cheep, besides eventually figuring the fish hook out I didnt think of any other thing to use. I also rarely used things in Color Splash, usually only using them when it was necessary to take down the bosses the one moment theyre about to beat you and it's a must. But I enjoyed the extra challenge of finding where the right thing is, and since it's only needed near the end of the battle after tackling the real challenge it's still pretty fun! I kind of want to try a no things in battles run for both games now (besides the requirement to finish the Color Splash bosses off and the mandatory ones in Sticker Star)
When I played this for the first time, I would always lose over and over until finally giving up and looking up which thing would beat which boss. Not using things was a really fun way to revisit the game so I'd recommend it! I believe in Color Splash things are mandatory in most boss fights but minimizing them would still be fun
@@BarelyAlec Only the Kooplings seem to require a thing at the end if I remember correctly, all mini bosses including the black Shy Guy ninja (for him that would involve a POW block) can be done without them. I didnt even use a single thing when fighting Bowser and instead used a bunch of big hammers to remove the most paint, I just took a little bit of time to finally block well enough. I dont know if Color Splash has any sort of thing that would give you an advantage against Bowser and I was making it tougher than necessary like in Sticker Star, but I did learn something funny from online: if you try to use the compass to flee from Bowser, it doesnt work. The only way to "flee" him is to reset or game over.
@@Lizuma It's kind of funny that Color Splash is the opposite of Sticker Star with minibosses not needing things unlike bowser jr. and cheep cheep. And bosses in Sticker Star don't need things but they do in Color Splash
Me too, the clapping getting more and more intense is great. Megasparkle goomba still has the best theme though. You just can't beat the cowbell at the beginning.
What's funnier is that the last 2 bosses technically don't have Thing "weaknesses" (or at least Mr. Blizzard not having a SPECIFIC Thing weakness), cheesing Blizzard is just spamming Fire Flowers or Burnhammers, Petey is waiting until he's stunned then using jump stickers on his belly button. The game handheld you too hard during the early bosses to trick you into wasting the wrong Things on the later bosses when you didn't even need Things at all. That was both a big yet small brain move on the developers.
I beat this game getting the 5 royal stickers backwards so I beat W5, then W4, then W3, then W2, and finally W1. Took some weird routing but you should do it for a vid
I'm making a video for a separate challenge in this game and for part of it, go to world 5 to pick some stuff up and basically every non-boss level to pick up maximum heart increases before I start fighting bosses. So I don't beat the worlds out of order but I do go to them out of order.
@@jeremybrandt7095 You need to go all the way to the level with the boss in world 1 to pick up the trumpet, but you can just exit the level with it and start world 3 without fighting the boss. So yeah, you have to go to world 1 first, but you don't have to finish it.
I learned so much from this video about sticker star along with it being pretty entertaining. I can only think of this: Imagine doing gooper blooper, but you were forced to rely on the roulette pow to cancel the poison phase. Would be quite fun to try on my 3ds one day if i ever return to sticker star along with this challenge.
The old one was thrown together in a couple of minutes so it wasn't as good as it could have been. This was my most popular video (now 2nd most thanks to the Bowser video) and I thought it would get more views with a better thumbnail so I tried it. The click-through rate, which is an important metric for youtube because it means the number of people who have gotten the video recommended actually clicked on the video went up when I changed thumbnails. The same thing happened with the Bowser video which is why it started performing ahead of this one.
That was a lot of damage, even comparing it to regular burnhammers. But I guess since it was a Big Shiny Burnhammer it just does that much with the boss's weakness to fire.
Just because the fight is so long that I thought it would be better to separate it from the rest. Watch-time is really important on youtube and if this video had the bowser fight in it, most viewers probably wouldn't watch that far.
Would it be possible to beat petey piranha without jumping on his button? Just attacking him without things or infinijump and missing on the button hits?
I'm not sure if he would get up by himself if you don't hit him. If he does then you could run away every turn which would fail every time until he got up. If that's the case, it would probably be possible with lots of mushrooms and hopslippers, similar to how I beat bowser.
Barely Alec well, hopefully you can test this out! Otherwise i have a replacement challenge, if you can beat petey with failed attacks or using sleephammers. Though that last one may require a ton of them.

Barely Alec try it for all the bosses then! The “using only failed attacks” with common stickers. The “no bopping the bellybutton” or “using sleephammer” should be an extra. Or maybe a standalone. Could be longer than expected!
put these items in after you found a unpaperized block! if you run out, enter the level again block. line jump, then shiny line jump, then flashy line jump, then clone jump, then shiny clone jump, then flashy clone jump, then you get a infini jump that is 1x1 space in the album!

The boss claps along to the music in complex patterns, interrupting your own rhythm. If it clapped during your attacks, it would’ve been even better. But I loved dodging the attacks. They were all rhythmically telegraphed and rewarded people who could “clap” along to the music correctly or even noticed it in the first place.
The song slaps as the boss claps. The music in this game is pretty good in general. I love the Megasparkle Goomba song and how it starts with a cowbell

Everything is good about the game except the battle system
I personally think it’s one of the worst bosses ever, just because you pretty much can’t win in an intuitive or intended way without the sponge, and once you use the sponge, the battle becomes free and there’s almost no way you can lose
@@zanmolecules4105 I actually really liked beating the boss the unintended way. It provided a ton of challenge and strategy I wasn't expecting. I essentially had to nail the action commands, and blocking was crucial whenever the poison attack was about to happen. By the end of the boss fight, I was entirely out of stickers. Easily the hardest Paper Mario boss I've played so far (I haven't played TTYD and Super yet though).
It actually feels like an actual game.
You mean like it was intended to play it this way? It's a lot more fun this way for me now but if I did this when the game first came out, I probably would have given up.
I want to see indie game developers to take Sticker Star’s combat and improve upon it.
My idea is instead of using a sticker book you use a spinning scroll where the player selects 1/3 area of the roll using stickers for the turn. You can use permanent stickers on the side which decreases in power the more you use them in battle but can be repaired. The sticker scroll has a special power to move stickers up or down so attack combos are easier.
Yeah, it'd be cool to see this combat system expanded on!

Well, the Hopslipper is the closest thing to an Infinijump you will ever get. Even the base damage of 10 if you land all action commands isn’t bad either, and it is because it hits many times that it does the most damage to bosses beyond overpowered stickers
@@BarelyAlec One thing i noticed is that the Battle Spin cost 3 coins, and if you get 3 coin symbols you get a bunch of coins, so it's useful to farm coins if you know how to time it right.

This is really interesting, I was wondering if it was possible to defeat any of these bosses since one of the main complaints with this game is that it seems like you *need* a thing sticker to beat them.

@@BarelyAlec I always thought that the things you need to defeat the bosses were somewhat obvious, the only part I remember needing to look up were the hieroglyphs in the desert tower. Still, there were a few that were very confusing.
@@mugfan9779 I think the only ones I didn't look up when I first played this game were: the snowman because fire/heat stickers are obvious, and the goomba since it's pretty straightforward with or without a thing sticker. I also looked up a lot of the puzzles because some of them are pretty weird in this game.

Color Splash required its version of things to even think about damaging some bosses. I tried making a video about not using them but it's impossible in that game (at least to my knowledge).
You know, this game surprisingly has the best way to defeat bosses out of the three modern Paper Mario games. It gives you a nice Thing to defeat you to win but you can also defeat almost every boss without a specific Thing that works best on them.
Normally this is a sought-after feature and usually makes people who play the game declare the game to have a deep battle system, or at least a fun battle system. However, it has not done so for this game.
It is clearly because the game dissuades from using anything but the correct item. The only boss you could reasonably try this on without being discouraged is Megasparkle Goomba, and Kersti tells you that you should have used the correct thing. By that point, Tower Power Pokey comes back and makes it super hard to defeating without using the Bat item because it’s falling attack does so much and you naturally do so little, blocking doesn’t help, and even crumpling doesn’t seem to have much effect.
Sticker Star is more interesting than more people give it credit for. You can even do reverse boss order without glitches because you can actually gain access to World 5 before you even defeat Worlds 1, 2 and 3. It’s a shame that people ignore this fact because of its many flaws and that the other games “follow in Sticker Star’s stead”.
This game is still very bad, but not with interesting facts.
Yeah, the game goes too far with making the player believe the correct Thing is necessary in defeating most bosses. When I played this game for the first time, I had to look up which one to use on a majority of the bosses because they seemed impossible to me without them. It's weird that the game goes as far as to have Kersti tell the player that there was a more efficient way to win the fight instead of congratulate them for not relying on the instant win button.
Unlocking worlds out of order is pretty cool and something I only heard of recently. I'm going to be doing a viewer requested challenge in this game and I think that might come in handy.
Yeah, it’s fun in its own way. Despite it being a terrible Paper Mario game, if it were the first game in the series it would be alright.
Gooper Blooper without Sponge is very doable. And I wouldn't call fire or infini sticker weaknesses of Bowser's Ice Statue or Petey Piranha particularly puzzling, considering how many options you're given with them.
Then there's also bosses like the Big Scuttlebug that I don't think even have one specific weakness
So basically the only thing that defines how hard boss is, is how much health they have left after using the *thing*
Generally speaking, yeah. But the scissors on the MegaSparkle Goomba have addition effects like skipping a turn and the Blooper misses while poisoned.
It's good to see that it IS possible to beat the bosses without using their thing stickers which is how it always should have been to begin with.

I looked up this challenge after watching TRG coliseum and, honestly did this myself in my spare time. It’s not easy but god damn is it fun. But the pitch up...the pitch up...but on another note. Things actually have action commands as well. Even the MUSHROOMS!
I had a lot of fun with this challenge since I remember having to look up which thing sticker to use as a kid after not being able to beat the boss. I'm just bad at the thing sticker timing and am embarrassed that I didn't know about the mushroom action command

Recently i watched some Bowser challenges and discovered... Mushrooms do have Action Commands!
If you do an Excellent in: Big Shiny 1-Up, your 1st heal heals 20HP.
Shiny Mushroom, it heals 60HP.
Flashy Mushroom, it heals 99HP.
I don't know how much Normal Mushroom heals if you do an Excellent, and also Normal Big 1-Up, and i don't know if it has Normal-sized variations and a MegaFlash 1-Up.(maybe not)

i never use thing stickers unless absolutely necessary
I got to around chapter 3 doing that, and i keenly remember megasparkle goomba being a genuine challenge where i had to actually think about my moves instead of spamming offensive stickers, it was a really nice change of pace for a game that was otherwise really underwhelming.
That sounds interesting! Did you lose the run to Gooper Blooper? The game is definitely balanced weirdly where it's really difficult until you find which thing sticker to use, but once you find the correct one it's really easy.

Eyy, this is pretty interesting to see! Challenges like this make the game more interesting. I was wondering, is it possible to defeat the Big Cheep Cheep in the port without an Infinijump or Thing Stickers? If it helps, you can first strike it if you jump at a certain angle before it lands on you on the overworld.
Yeah, I love how this challenge makes the bosses more interesting too! When filming this I tried to kill the Cheep Cheep with those restrictions but his health cannot fall below a certain threshold in his first phase and that's when he goes into the water which requires the thing sticker to get him out so you can hit him again. So as far as I know it's impossible with those restrictions but I could be wrong

However, I remember the fishing hook only made it vulnerable rather than dealing a massive amount of damage to the fish, so I suppose it's not too bad for a challenge run. Currently, I'm trying out a 20 HP No Thing Stickers run of Sticker Star, so once I catch up to the port (currently only at Megasparkle Goomba), I'll try to experiment with it.
@@decadrud I remember a lot of mini-bosses requiring thing stickers. Like in the first fight against bowser Jr you can't do enough damage to him to finish him in one hit without the scissors sticker and he'll heal back to full at the end of every turn. She even insults you if you use things that aren't the intended one for the boss. You can beat some of them on the first turn if use the boom box, squirt gun, and pretty much any other thing. She'll still say it was inefficient.

TLDR: this guy is a madman and the bosses in this game are insane
This is probably the most insane thing I’ve ever witnessed along with the bowser fight. Mega sparkle goomba and Petey piranha are manageable without things or infinijumps. The bowser snow statue is a little less manageable because they designed the boss to be fought with the radiator, oven, hair dryer, and basically any other heat emitting thing. Tower power pokey is where it gets bad though. The boss has so much health and unlike bowser statue, it doesn’t have a certain few non thing attacks that it takes crazy damage from. This makes the boss a lot harder because it’s basically a damage race where you and him go back and forth endlessly, chipping away at his health slowly as you try not to get slaughtered. The boss was not meant to be dealt with without the bat. It’s obvious because of how much damage it does. The fight is still possible with a good strategy and playing well. But the gooper blooper fight is just unbelievable. If you don’t know what you’re doing and don’t have the sponge thing, he WILL hit you with poison and you will be lucky to hit the boss ever again after that. I once fought gooper blooper without the sponge and he hit me with his poison and I never hit him again after that happened. I must’ve wasted about 20 stickers, every single one of them missing before I died and finally got to refight him with the sponge. The boss must’ve been planned to be fought with the sponge. But the battle is really stupid because once you use the sponge he gets locked into the same purgatory! He can’t hit you! Apparently there is an answer to this fight? There’s no strategy, it doesn’t matter because the developers want you to play the game exactly how they wanted you to.

Yeah, a lot of the bosses feel like the developers wanted the player to find which thing stickers counter them entirely. I remember having to look up the correct thing stickers to beat the bosses when I played this game the first time. But that's what makes the challenge of not using them fun I guess.
@@BarelyAlec yeah and that’s one of the gleaming problems with this game. It doesn’t allow you to have your own preferences or strategy, you have to do what the game tells you it wants you to do. Most of these bosses are free with things like the boom box combined with the squirt gun, plus things like the bowser statue being slaughtered by fire. It’s fine to add those weaknesses in as a small touch to reward the player for finding them but it’s a problem when that’s the only way to beat them without throwing 15-30 minutes down the drain using hopslippers.

If You don't get the cricket badge stat wise she is actually stronger than the chapter 2 boss ( and she is the chapter 1 boss )
However by bringing A LOT of healing ítems and a Solid strat You can win without said badge
These fights are flawed on a fundamental level because the difficulty level switches between 'extremely easy' and 'complete bullshit' all depending on whether or not you happen to have an attack that just happens to erase the boss. It's still leagues above Color Splash REQUIRING their use; even if it's stupidly flawed, at least you have a choice here. Regardless, blatantly weighting said choice with fights like Gooper Blooper makes it seem like playing without them was the result of a mistake rather than an intentional choice, which they then 'fixed' in the next game.
Even if what you said is largely repeated from the 'Everything wrong with Sticker Star' video, it all stands on it's own because the system they have for the boss fights is terrible.

I am a staunch defender of this game and even I can admit the way they handled the boss fights was some serious bullshit.
I really enjoy the sticker system, I think Kersti was a fun companion, and I really don’t mind the simplistic story (even though let’s be real the base story is barely any different from the original Paper Mario), but the lazy pseudo-puzzle boss thing is really lame.
Admittedly though it is quite satisfying watching these big, powerful enemies get utterly WRECKED by the Thing stickers.

From what I've heard a lot of people didn't know the scissors are Mega-Sparkle Goomba's weakness. I think there are a lot of ways to stop Gooper's poison. Mr. Blizzard hates all fire. Petey is a weird fight since you don't have Kersti.

Also, I managed to do the Bowser fight without any thing (but with Infinijump, to kill the Womp, actually I learned that we're supposed to use the scissors against it after beating bowser for the first time lol). The part with the lava pool takes FOREVER if you're not prepared, and I wasn't, but it was pretty interesting
When I played this game the first time I remember having so much trouble with pretty much every boss and having to resort to google to find out which thing countered them. If I remember correctly, Tower Power Pokey and Gooper Blooper gave me the most trouble back then. Nice job beating Bowser without things! I've heard that the Eekhammer actually beats the Womp in one hit, but didn't know that until after my Bowser no things video.

Don't ask why but I started to replay this game and I used the scissors on the first boss and that did not happen. I used it at the right time and everything and it just did the damage and that was it.
It's not a big deal of course since it's a free boss either way but I just found it odd 🤔

Hey, quick question, is it possible to beat the first Bowser Junior fight without things? (the one that forces you to use Scissors to beat Paper)
As far as I know, you need the Scissors to beat that first Bowser Jr fight since he heals to full health every turn and you can't do enough damage to beat him in one turn without them. If it's possible, I think it would require some kind of sequence break to get more powerful stickers before the fight. I could be wrong though so if you're trying to find a way to do it, good luck!

A regular Shiny Jump Sticker does exactly 19 damage.
I recently attempted The Big Cheep Cheep Boss. Unless there is a way to defeat that boss thingless, that means 2 thing stickers are required to beat Sticker Star.

Replaying the game without things in battle is a very fun challenge, I'd recommend it!
Honestly if the game had more strategy instead of spamming these overpowered stickers with unskippable cutscenes, the game would be much more fun. Thing stickers even make exploring very annoying, always needing a very specific one to progress or find secrets. The game would be much better without them at all.

If not, the scissors and hook are the only required things I can think of, unless you can beat the Cheep Cheep without it going into the water.
I originally was planning on this being a no things in battle run, but I believe the bowser jr. and Cheep Cheep fight are the only two absolutely required things here. You can't do enough damage to bowser jr. at that point in the game before he just heals to full and cheep cheep can't be damaged until you hook him back to land. I could be wrong though and there might be a way to beat one or both of them without things

I’m probably really late but I’m doing this challenge myself as I’ve done it years ago (no things minus for boo bowser jr and cheep cheep, no infijump, no heart blocks, no running, and fill out the museum in full) (kersti is def allowed at the final boss though because of how well it ends off the fight and it’s just very rewarding) and I gotta say tower power pokey is probs my favorite boss for this challenge, mainly because it showcases how amazing poison mushroom is as a sticker as well as pow block
It literally just cancels all his attacks and is very fun to work around AND does 7 damage when pokey is afflicted, it’s a very powerful and underused sticker
Same is almost said for pow block I never realized how great the status effect it gives until I did the challenge
That's a cool challenge! It still makes me a little sad that some minibosses require thing stickers to beat. I haven't used the poison mushroom much myself so it sounds like I've been underrating it too. Pow blocks are amazing for their status allowing you to jump on spikey enemies!
Hey i didn't know you could reset gooper blooper's poison attack by crumpling it!
I honestly didn't know that either until I did it. I was planning on crumpling for the extra damage with a hammer that turn and healing the poison the following turn with a 1-up.
As a little kid I didnt always pay attention to the fact I needed things and made the bosses a bigger challenge than they probably should've been, lol. Same with certain mini bosses like the Cheep Cheep, besides eventually figuring the fish hook out I didnt think of any other thing to use. I also rarely used things in Color Splash, usually only using them when it was necessary to take down the bosses the one moment theyre about to beat you and it's a must. But I enjoyed the extra challenge of finding where the right thing is, and since it's only needed near the end of the battle after tackling the real challenge it's still pretty fun! I kind of want to try a no things in battles run for both games now (besides the requirement to finish the Color Splash bosses off and the mandatory ones in Sticker Star)
When I played this for the first time, I would always lose over and over until finally giving up and looking up which thing would beat which boss. Not using things was a really fun way to revisit the game so I'd recommend it! I believe in Color Splash things are mandatory in most boss fights but minimizing them would still be fun
@@BarelyAlec Only the Kooplings seem to require a thing at the end if I remember correctly, all mini bosses including the black Shy Guy ninja (for him that would involve a POW block) can be done without them. I didnt even use a single thing when fighting Bowser and instead used a bunch of big hammers to remove the most paint, I just took a little bit of time to finally block well enough. I dont know if Color Splash has any sort of thing that would give you an advantage against Bowser and I was making it tougher than necessary like in Sticker Star, but I did learn something funny from online: if you try to use the compass to flee from Bowser, it doesnt work. The only way to "flee" him is to reset or game over.
@@Lizuma It's kind of funny that Color Splash is the opposite of Sticker Star with minibosses not needing things unlike bowser jr. and cheep cheep. And bosses in Sticker Star don't need things but they do in Color Splash

What's funnier is that the last 2 bosses technically don't have Thing "weaknesses" (or at least Mr. Blizzard not having a SPECIFIC Thing weakness), cheesing Blizzard is just spamming Fire Flowers or Burnhammers, Petey is waiting until he's stunned then using jump stickers on his belly button. The game handheld you too hard during the early bosses to trick you into wasting the wrong Things on the later bosses when you didn't even need Things at all.
That was both a big yet small brain move on the developers.
Yeah, once you get further into the game and have more powerful stickers, you don't need specific Things for bosses

Not when I recorded for this. I lost to this boss a lot in the past though and had to look up which thing to use.
I beat this game getting the 5 royal stickers backwards so I beat W5, then W4, then W3, then W2, and finally W1. Took some weird routing but you should do it for a vid
I'm making a video for a separate challenge in this game and for part of it, go to world 5 to pick some stuff up and basically every non-boss level to pick up maximum heart increases before I start fighting bosses. So I don't beat the worlds out of order but I do go to them out of order.
Actually you cannot go to World 5 first, you must go to World 1 first, the. you can go to the next worlds earlier in the game
@@jeremybrandt7095 You need to go all the way to the level with the boss in world 1 to pick up the trumpet, but you can just exit the level with it and start world 3 without fighting the boss. So yeah, you have to go to world 1 first, but you don't have to finish it.

I learned so much from this video about sticker star along with it being pretty entertaining. I can only think of this: Imagine doing gooper blooper, but you were forced to rely on the roulette pow to cancel the poison phase. Would be quite fun to try on my 3ds one day if i ever return to sticker star along with this challenge.

Why in the first fight with Bowser Jr you can’t beat him without the scissors?
Yeah, it's unfortunate but you just can't deal enough damage before he heals back to full.
@@BarelyAlec I think if you hack the game, you can kill him with no scissors. But if you do that, Bowser Jr’s health cannot fall below 1 I think.

How come you changed the thumbnail for this vid?
The old one was thrown together in a couple of minutes so it wasn't as good as it could have been. This was my most popular video (now 2nd most thanks to the Bowser video) and I thought it would get more views with a better thumbnail so I tried it. The click-through rate, which is an important metric for youtube because it means the number of people who have gotten the video recommended actually clicked on the video went up when I changed thumbnails. The same thing happened with the Bowser video which is why it started performing ahead of this one.
Why is the music all transposed up?
I played this on an emulator and my computer couldn't run it very well so the game was slightly slowed down

How did that burnhammer 99 damage?
That was a lot of damage, even comparing it to regular burnhammers. But I guess since it was a Big Shiny Burnhammer it just does that much with the boss's weakness to fire.
How come you put Bowser in a separate video?
Just because the fight is so long that I thought it would be better to separate it from the rest. Watch-time is really important on youtube and if this video had the bowser fight in it, most viewers probably wouldn't watch that far.

Would it be possible to beat petey piranha without jumping on his button? Just attacking him without things or infinijump and missing on the button hits?
I'm not sure if he would get up by himself if you don't hit him. If he does then you could run away every turn which would fail every time until he got up. If that's the case, it would probably be possible with lots of mushrooms and hopslippers, similar to how I beat bowser.
Barely Alec well, hopefully you can test this out! Otherwise i have a replacement challenge, if you can beat petey with failed attacks or using sleephammers. Though that last one may require a ton of them.

Barely Alec try it for all the bosses then! The “using only failed attacks” with common stickers. The “no bopping the bellybutton” or “using sleephammer” should be an extra. Or maybe a standalone. Could be longer than expected!

i know the mega spercil goomba is possable in one turn! i watched a video on how to get a infini jump super early in the game
put these items in after you found a unpaperized block! if you run out, enter the level again block. line jump, then shiny line jump, then flashy line jump, then clone jump, then shiny clone jump, then flashy clone jump, then you get a infini jump that is 1x1 space in the album!

My computer doesn't run the game very well.
It would be fun if you did a challenge if you could beat the game without blocking.
You can beat all the fights without taking damage so no blocking wouldn't really matter.

@@BarelyAlec You are lucky that you can run the Citra emulator at all. Because it's not avaliable in my tablet or my cell phone. I feel a bit... jealous. It's sad i can't play 3ds games because there are some i wanted to play. It's the same deal with Gamecube, Wii, Wii U and Switch(i don't know if Wii U and Switch have an emulator, but still).
