AE86 / AW11 Speed Chime

- This is how the speed chime sound is created for the Toyota AE86 and AW11.
A simple solenoid with a plunger/hammer. Applying power to the terminals causes a magnetic field to be created within the coil, which forces the plunger to move down and strike the lower plate. Removing power causes the magnetic field to collapse and a spring makes plunger bounce back up and strike the upper plate before finally coming to rest in the middle position again. The basic principle for this action is described by Faraday's Law. #InitialD Авто/Мото

@@saitama-1467 ah shit.. here we go again..
Never imagined the chime to be such a simple little device. Always thought the chime was played from some speakers lol. Thanks for sharing this
That little speaker looking cover on the center console = where the speed chime relay is.
Everyone took it off because it was annoying.
I know only one AE86 that has it, and he spent 3 months sourcing the relay lol!
I know right?
lol an entire dedicated magnetic speaker for a speed chime is much to expect from a 1980s economy hunchback
Now it's a speaker, not because lazy but because copper is expensive.
@@re4796 hunchback? You mean nostradamus
Imagine using this as your alarm clock! LOL
The dream takes a sudden turn. You find yourself doing a late night tofu delivery over Mt. Akina, "Running in the 90's", is playing on the radio.
Christopher Connolly i actually have it as my alarm clock lol
I wonder what it would be like if it was also used as a doorbell. :)
good idea
I actually hooked one of these up as my door chime on my Volvo
Heartbeat of AE86.
dance to the heartbeat
Woo o oo
You gotta take your chances right now

Oh that's pretty cool, I thought it was electronically produced, didn't realize it was a mechanical chime.
They used a lot if mechanical components in the 80s

I honestly didn't expect that the chime would usw electro magnetism haha
Solenoids are actually very common in cars. The same technology is what engages VTEC.
literally everything uses electromagnetism

I know this comment will be dumb, but...
I've never heard such a crazy crowd reaction for a nail hitting a piece of aluminum to create a Ping! (Yes, I do watch Initial D, and this is just nostalgic, even without the high octane Eurobeat.)
Ladies and gentlemen, you now understand why Japanese "electrics" last forever

neat that it's a mechanical thing, I always assumed it was just played through a speaker
Made this as my alarm, woke up with skid marks on my bed sheet.

@@saggyhuggies123 true lmao
I was today years old that I learned that the sound is indeed a simple solenoid with a plunger/hammer hitting a piece of metal back and forth.
I thought of a speaker but a special relais like this makes more sense for the time it was made in.
I remember hearing this throughout my childhood in the classic toyota crown taxi's around Asia.
I love this sound
every day in 2 years this sound wake up me with alarm clock
Oh It's Such A Little Item Speed Chime Machine That Alerts You When Overspeed At 105Km/H. And I Love If It Will Be My Alarm Sound. Love It!
this is exactly how a doorbell looks inside and works
That is sick, that is a similar, if not the exact same solenoid coil housing used in starters which had the solenoid in a boot shaped housing.
This one is also the same chime for the MR2 MK1
When i first heard it in a video (a video of it working while the driver is driving the car)
i thought exactly like that, something pushing something making that noise, i didn't expect it to be like that!
Oh boy, now i want one of those!
That is a really clever design
Understandable, have a great day.
very cute mechanism
I want this as my open door alarm
Love the chime

Ima need a 20 hour long version of this right now

It's like a doorbell scaled down 4x.
"Mmha~ ha~ ha~ cool vibrations" {I wanna dance!}
Awesome! But, please, how we could adapt this chime to a car that didn't have it as standard? Is it electrically connected to the speedometer?
Spoiler:
Let's look for Takumi's AE86 chime, as it was removed from the car when he joined Project D. No more chimes during his battles. So as from Itsuki's AE85
Speedometer is mechanical on AE86 and AE85, but only AE86 GT (S-Apex etc etc blabla) has a trigger sensor that counts teeth and sends speed signal to ECU.
In other words, Itsuki`s AE85, realistically speaking, shouldnt have it.
ToreDL87 oh, that's interesting. I thought it was some kind of device on the speedometer. So, yes, as just the "fully loaded" AE86 had it, Itsuki's hachi-go shouldn't have, but had it, as far as I remember on First Stage. But on Fourth stage it had the chime already removed (at the battle with the Ichi-go). Or they realized the AE85 shouldn't had the speed chime. Anyway, this chime sound is sweet :P
If your cruising speed is 120km/h or less then yeah it`s useful :)
Fully mechanical spedometers has chime inside it, it working on spring and eliptical shaft. When sped is low - spring always touch shaft, then at hi speed spring start to jump from wide to narrow
fuck i read the spoiler
Me hearing this in my fridge:
Here's my engineering brain going nuts.
It's so simple it can be created with meer common hand tools... Just the dimensions are missing.
Connect it to a 555 timer with ¼ time ON and ¾ time off and probably done.
i love this
Neat little bit of mechanical engineering
I thought it was a buzzer. interesting that it's a bell
now to add Itsuki screaming in the background XD

@@ozcar2007 It was both actually
dang i need this on my desktop when ever i feel bored i just tap a button and it goes ting tang and i feel relieved
>when you know exactly what to do with that old doorbell mechanism
it wont work, the solenoid is for 110/220VAC and yours needs to be 12VDC.

I always thought it was some kinda speaker... neat
when you're sitting on the back seat of a white AE86 & it's raining cats & dogs, you can't see anything, you're afraid for your life & this bell starts ringing
Ignoring this while going over 100mph goes so hard
I love japanses engineering ❤❤❤
Simple, sweet and mechanical.
instead of using single speaker with a wave modulation or buzzer they opted for a simple music relay.
I need this.
I wonder if I install these in my riced semi. I need to replace the startup chime.

I would like use one for lights reminder in my ae86 but it's a too expendive part 😭
Does anyone know a way to mount it on a 1987 Toyota Supra?
Everyone else: This chime is so annoying. Im going to remove it.
Me: Hoping that I can add this so whenever I hit 100km/h, its time to drift.
I didnt know it was a mechanical bell!
My Eurobeat wont work, this is another amazing option for my Eurobeat replacement.
What is a speed chime and why does it sound so good
Oh that's how it work
I want to install a chime like this for my 1988 MR2.
Is the AE86 chime the same as the AW11 chime? I can only find the ae86 on the internet.
*European AW11
The AE86 chime seems to have a slightly different mounting tab and has a plastic connector for the two wires, whereas the AW11 one has two screw terminals attached to the wires. The actual chime is the same though. So it should still work with some minor modification.
The only thing I don't know is if your European dash cluster has the screws on the back of the cluster to attach the wires (and if it has a signal for the chime). If you really want it you could try I guess, maybe look into getting a JDM cluster if that doesn't work.
I bought a door chime for a 240sx. They sound almost identical. I'm having my friend help me wire it up for my '91 FC so that I can use a switch to turn it on or off. That way, if it happens to get annoying I can just shut it off with ease
This is what everyone wanted but could say.
I'm gonna puts this in my car
Its so kawaii❤
im gonna get one of these and put it in a 5th gen celica, i want.
no way this is how they made the chime wow
So dat was how da sound was made da entire time
Can someone give me a link to where I can buy one?
Was hoping for a chime in my Kei van no chime
No chime in the usdm 86 as well :(
Теперь я всё видел в своей жизне
It sounds broken when it hits the top plate
Dont care, makes me feel good everytime i hear it. Thus, it stays in mine
where did you find one of these? I'm looking to install one in my cars (Nissan and/or a mitsubishi)
I've seen them on Ebay sometimes but I think people try to ask too much for them. I personally found mine at a junkyard on an AW11 MR-2 (attached directly to the back of the instrument cluster). Not sure if the American models came with them though so might have to try online.
People commonly call them: speed warning, speed chime, over speed chime etc...
I wanna make this the door chime in my car
What voltage do he need please? =)
I really need to get one, i will search on the internet for getting a working one
It needs 12V (Like most other automotive electronics). Good luck.
i didnt know that this does the sound O_O i thought like an speaker does it lol
Can I mount this on a 1984 SEAT Ibiza SXI (100HP)?
Why not?
