All toyota engines 80-90 years. You cannot destroy this engines... many years happened, and the engine started straight away without even coughing, like German or American engines did. this is ordinary quality of japanes. ❤ Japanes engines never die.
Excellent troubleshooting. I'd replace that coil with a higher energy one and new distributor for cheap insurance for spark, fuel pump and filter to make sure its good.
Perhaps you could break it down for a noob. Did they put an external power to the fuel pump? So the dual pump clearly isn’t dead, is it the relay to the pump?

Seems like fuel pump power wiring has cut off somewhere. So grabbed external power source and force started the fuel pump, engine started. which means the pump itself is running good and usable condition, so later make another power source from 12v main power wiring or restore the old one will be solution
Yup old Toyotas and old Ford's are pretty much bulletproof and are built to last I've worked on enough engines to know I'm surprised you didn't do the old brute force method with a hammer some times these old engines need a little encouragement to work personally I use my engine un sticker to get these old engines to sing
You can access it but not replace it without dropping the tank. That was the case in my ST185 Celica. The car is a gem but getting the tank out was PITA.

Is easy to tell whether this is the fuel problem or the ignition problem by smelling for gasoline unburned fume from the exhaust! If you have a very old car which more than 15 years old of milage exceeding 300,000km with regular spark plugs changes and ignited. You can be sure it is the fuel pump or electrical loose connection!
I’d pay anything to have one, even my dad regrets selling his GTS the closest we got in the States at the time. legend of a car, be nice to it and touch it up some, it’ll take care of you for another 200,000+ miles 🥹
Man this makes me so happy to see but breaks my heart at the same time. I just had a best friend past basically a brother to me. He had a 86 corolla gts. With a 4a-gze swap that was super charged. I can't remember what it came out of and it wasn't a mr2. but he swaped it from latitudeal to longitudinal for the haci roku and so fun to drive. I hate how he tragically passed in accident walking down a country road at night. But thay car was his babu and it was a coupe. Rip Charles " chucky " stamper
