It's a slippery slope. I remember having only one in late 2021. Now i have over a hundred.

Making OCs is so good for you as an artist. It really helps you connect with WHY you're making art. I feel like a lot of us lose sight of that over time.
I used to have so many OCs when I was a beginner artist, but then the whole trend of bullying beginner artists for making 'mary sues' started (around 2011ish I think?). I became self conscious of them, and eventually stopped making them. I still made a lot of art, and even started doing a bit of professional work. But over time I was starting to lose my passion. My art had no meaning to me. I liked that it looked pretty, but I had no real connection to my work.
Then, in 2020, during lockdown, I decided to make a new oc just for fun. That was the start of me finding my passion for art again. It made me realize WHY I wanted to make art in the first place. It was never just about making pretty art. It was about expressing myself, and telling a story that would hopefully connect with others and move them, just like so many stories had moved me over the years. I was seriously headed towards artistic burnout and I really think making that OC is what got me back on track.

Wow, I been struggling all these years with art block and the answer was this simple. Maybe it's the same with fanart, when you're so obsessed about idk a ship, and you imagine them in every possible scenario so you're constantly creating. That's what happened to me back in 2021 when I had an art acc (I follow you from that one)
Thank you for this, I consider you a friend now

An oc i have created while bored recently was Toff: because i can't draw dogs (yet)
Basically, a shape-shifting dog that doesn't know he can, so the shape shifting just _happens_
You can draw him however you like, just not the right way, and it'll be correct cuz he's never got to a accurate dog shape.
Don't worry i'm not being lazy over drawing dogs, i just found it a funny conceptthat would fit well lol

Oh yeah i'll work more on him, add background story, and funny situations with humans (likely other OCs)

Thanks, I've put in a lot of effort into learning the basics and I've gotten quite good at copying references from photos and life. However, you were very convincing remarking on a feeling that "nothing feels like your own". I want to eventually draw comics but I think a good starting point will just be making something original I can put into different situations.

I've always wanted to make ocs but I can never get attached to their designs. In fact I don't know how to design them at all. Or even find names. It's much easier coming up with a personality/backstory.

Hey, it can take time to feel truly satisfied with a design, and that's fine! Some things that you can think about at least for a direction though if you want:
      - does the character have anything (environment, job, hobbies, etc) that would cause certain features of the design to be necessary?
      - what's the setting that the character belongs to? Even if you don't make things extensive, some degree of worldbuilding hand in hand with character design really play off of each other. Using a real setting is also fine! It's just useful to have in mind to know what sort of clothing may fit. Timeframe can also be part of setting
      - you can use symbolism! You don't have to, but you can think about features of the character that you wish to subtly represent in details/colourscheme etc if it interests you
      - think in the mind of the character, with personality etc, how would they feel comfortable to dress?
      - you can also think of features that you like that might fit, or gather a BUNCH of inspiration images, and look for similarities between them
If you gather details from those in written bullet points it can help have a separation between straight copying anything and give an open mind to try drawing multiple variations that fit the description/variation upon. It still takes trial and error, but maybe it can help lead you in the right direction?
Also: it's fine for a character to have multiple designs! Different outfits, or designs for different ages, that's all fine if it works better for you (like if you like multiple directions that clash)
I don't know if those are much help, but regardless, good luck designing!

@@theo6840 my comment is late lol but thank you so much for the tips! It's so much easier for me to like other people's designs over my own but that's probably because I'm a bit too picky and perfectionistic. If the design isn't 'perfect' to me then I won't want it, but I'll write everything you said down and make a list!
