I'm just getting started and your videos have been a TREMENDOUS help. Keep them coming. Thanks!
This was perfect! I have a Canon t5i and I have been shooting "talking head" videos for a while but have been so frustrated because when I review the video it would always start out dark and 30 seconds into it only then would it lighten up. It was very frustrating. Putting everything into manual mode, aperture at 5.6, 24 fps, and iso adjustments and the video looks awesome with no up and down lighting from the camera. Great - thanks!
Thanks so much for this! I'm just starting with a T5i... This was a very informative piece, with lots of info; easily digestible. I like your style. You're humble like one of us... not pejorative or presuming anything. You should keep up this good work!
Super helpful, I use Canon t5i and we started a Vlog earlier this year and when not using our point and shoot (Canon G7x Mark II) we try and to sit down interviews - this is a very helpful tutorial. thanks!
Just purchased my first DSLR, a T5i. These videos are helping me so much, thank you!
This was super helpful! Thanks for the tips! xx
Re-visiting in 2019. Still in love with T4i :)
I physical switch the little switch on the lens to MF after I setup the focus. When the camera is on the other side of the table I walk over, focus on the spot I am going to be, the chair or right in front of it and then I press record, I walk back to the chair - sit down and start filming. I later just trim those bits off. Hope that helps.
I appreciate your clear explanations, which are also well timed.Thanks.
Great information, thanks for sharing!
Very helpful Toby, thank you.
Toby how about the image quality, if I'm using the video for RUclips. Should it be M, L Raw, and one more question.. maybe you can make a tutorial about, what are the setting that you used when you export the video to youtube. Do you save it as a quicktime movie?
This helped me sooo much!! Thank you!!
You're the best at camera tutorials.
Recently got a T5i as a beginner hobbyist photographer.
Great camera for a starter!
Thanks Justin and I agree- T5i is a great place to start. Got a prime lens yet? recommended Canon Prime Lenses Recommended Canon Prime Lenses and I am always happy to answer questions - come like facebook.com/Digital.Photo.Recommendations
As a BRAND NEW beginner, I thank you for these videos. This t5i is a bite that's hard to chew. Thanks again!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!! 👌
thank you so much for this video ! This helps me a lot to setup my camera for videos ! :)
this is a fantastic simple explanation for beginners
Very helpful! Thanks Toby:)
Very helpful. Thanks!
This is great information, I'm looking to purchase a T5I this helped me a lot.
I have been using Final Cut Pro and have to say I love it! There are still some quirks I am trying to figure out but for straight forward video in and video out to RUclips it has been working very well.
Awesome. Enjoy!
Great video. Very helpful.
Thanks a lot! This really helped me.
Hi Toby,
I love your videos and got myself a Canon T5i after watching your videos!
Thanks a lot, and I'm planning to shoot some videos for my channel too..
Keep up the awesome work!

Thanks so much for the video, great info. I jusi got a Canon T4i and your videos are really helping : )
Oh wow, that's it..........that's so awesome, can't wait to try it. Thanks so much.
Thanks SO Much!
Thanks for touching on depth of field in video mode. I wasn't able to get info on this anywhere else.
Very helpful.
I am going to subscribe hoping that one day you will elaborate, perhaps with examples.
Thanks again
Mike Desjardins Tell me what you would like to see more of? I may have a video that covers the topic.
Super helpful. Thank you. :)
Thanks for the excellent tips!
Hi Thanks for giving nice tips.
Love your videos and thank you for teaching many of us. I know how difficult it is to produce these. I once was very prolific in my video production, having published about 500 videos (most of which have gone private or I deleted). Post editing is very time consuming so I know the hours you put in to produce these and I'm very appreciative. Not to mention all the comments and moderating and responding to those, which can be a part time job too.
Thank you! You've just saved me a few good bucks!
Great vid! I have the canon t5i and I can't find anywhere in my settings to adjust the audio level... Do you know how I could access this? Thanks!
Thanks, as always great advise.
Good vid!
Great video, everyone starting out with DSLR video should watch this, thank you!
Thanks!
thank you!
Thank you. I am happy to answer any questions you might have.
Good point about YT compression. BTW keep up the great work
thanks for the help! I appreciate the sound advice. I have a shotgun mic that i use for short films and interviews. Do you ever use a tascam recorder? I own a dr-05 but I have trouble getting the sound to actually sound good with it even though it is supposed to be high quality sound.
Nice! Thanks
Toby, do you use the same setup now that you've 'got wood' in the background of your most recent videos? And have you done a video where you explain how you import and edit the footage to your computer? Thank you for all the information, I've been following your videos for quite some time but subscribed only recently. Nice job!
Very useful video ! Just What i was looking for. However, I still have doubts about how to adjust the shutter speed.
any good sd cards you'd recommend for shooting stills and video (price doesn't matter)?
or one for shooting stills and another for film?
i own a t4i.
flattering and free
Toby, thanks for the reply, should I keep the lens also in manual?
Very helpful video, thank you. Can you recommend (or point me to) a lav mic like the one you use in this video? When I went to B&H and asked for a lav mic for my DSLR, they showed me a whole bunch of stuff with mixers. I need a good basic plug in and record, set the levels on the camera. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Toby, very helpful video. Thanks! How are you liking living in Seattle?
Great video ! I've been searching all over on how to record longer videos on my t4i and I just can't figure it out...any tips
Hi Augustine, You want to go into the picture styles, select the style you want to adjust(I suggest User Def. 1) and press INFO - now turn the sharpness (first option) all the way down.
Hi I'm new to the canon t5i I just got it and I was wondering if there's some way of pausing the video during recording and unpausing it to continue? Thanks😊
Thank you :)
Toby, how about when I'm recording a DIY decoration video, I have a lot of materials in the table and my hands are moving around the table to show the steps, what kind of focus should I use?
Great video! I currently own Canon T5i, and noticed after recording and uploading the video to my computer, the speed of my voice is different than the action taking place in the video. My voice seems to be at the normal speed but I appear to be moving in slower motion. Does the frames per minute feature have anything to do with that? It has made my life a living nightmare!!! Please help!
I don't think it was mentioned but as you using the 18-55mm or the 18-135mm lens for this video? Thanks!
How to I get my plugin mic to work with this camera?
Nice video.
I have a T5i. If i wanted to shoot video at a wedding banquet hall that have low lighting, which setting should i max out ? Shutter / aperture / or iso ? Example, Most likely, 50th shutter will be still too dark, 5.6 is also too dark and i am already at 3200.
Thanks.
Yep, you will need to adjust depending on your distance from the camera and aiming for a bit below 12 is a good rule of thumb. There may be times when you need a bit more or a bit less but it is always a good starting point.
Hi, great video. Could you please tell me why don't we want to go lower then aperature 5.6?
what would be ideal settings for music video.? new to the T5i
i have a 4ti , does it matter about what battery you use or could it be something wrong with the camera. It is telling me to change the battery.
thank you soo much Toby, you are the best and you explain very well and very understandable soo everyone can understand your tips...
I got myself a T4i and i want to get an external mic, can you link me the external mic that u are using ? is only 20 USD and i think it does a great job...
Thank you Toby
Yep - setting wheel on M - I will try to get a video done tonight or tomorrow night that carefully shows how I set my exposure for video.
Hey thx, I usually shoot video with my T4i. Good info
Do you ever run into overheating problems? I've read that that can be an issue with these cameras but I'm not sure.
Hi! Great video! What is the mic you are using? Any link? Thanks a lot :)
Hi Again....forgot to ask..How do you shoot time lapse? Is that done thru camera or a program?
Hi Monty, from that distance your depth of field should be fine. Use the magnification trick to zoom in and scroll around the screen from back to front to check that everything is in focus. Watch the corners. Bright spot lights can be tricky - you will have to carefully balance exposure between the bright and the less bright. Otherwise your settings should be the same. What lens? and how much will you zoom?
Great lesson. I just started using a T4i. I can shoot video for 2 min. then it shuts off! UGH. Is there a timer perhaps? Also,
trying to shoot looking down at my work from overhead. Clamp I have is terrible. What do you use to keep camera in place? Do you use that red tripod and just put it extended above your work? UGH again.
A very big difference in sound when you switched mics.
Thanks for the clip. Learned a few more things. :)
hi how do you configure the camera in a way that it will only focus by touching the screen and stop autofocusing
That all sounds good. What was your aperture? When you magnify before you start recording is subject in focus? You setting camera on Manual Focus? let's see if we can figure this out. There is always a small chance you have a bad kit lens but I put that at the bottom of the list. You have a sample I can look at? You taken any photos? do those look sharp?
well i thought the aperture was just if you move a little forward or a little back so you're still in focus. I changed my aperture to the 6.3 you have in the video, but if i sit closer to the camera will the background be blurry then?
I was using the 18-55 lens. For all of my "talking head" type videos you do not need or want the auto focus so the 18-55 does just fine. If you need to have silent auto focus i.e. when you are tracking moving subjects then the 18-135 is a must.
Hi CameraRec Toby !!!!!
Im newbie on DSLRs
can you give me the best setting for recording video using the Canon T5i?
i will do unboxings of products.
Thanks advance
and
God Bless!!!!!
Thanks :)
Thank you sir
Hi Toby, I just purchased the same lavalier mic that you have and am wondering about levels--it seems like I have to really shout to get the mic to get volume (if I plug it into my computer) and there is some unpleasant static fuzz--how do you reduce these, or do you think there is something wrong with my mic?
What lens were you using in that video? I want to get the t4i to shoot video in a similar set up as yours and I wonder if it's worth buying the 18-135stm lens or if the 18-55 will suffice. What would you recommend?
Interesting. I have my volume set about 1/2 way and it is loud enough for me to comfortably hear it. I do have some others where I have to boost the audio a bit. I will keep this in mind for future videos, I always worry that I am too loud though. Thanks.
Hi Hazel, you do need a faster SD card, Class 4 is not fast enough. Under this video is a link to my gear including the card I think you should buy. I am not sure why you are seeing pixelated/cropped video, try again with a proper card and let me know if it continues to give you problems.
Hi! So I am new at youtube and videos as well. I have a t4i camera. I tried to do a video today with my camera at the cinematography setting--it said 1920/24 (I believe) and my camera kept automatically stopping recording. My SD card is level 4 32gb. Do I have to get a new one? Also, my videos keep uploading to youtube as pixalized and cropped and I don't know what format to have on my camera to make that stop. (I'm so clueless!) Thank you so much! -Hazel
The T5i is the 700d in the UK I believe? Do you know if you can select the file type (I.e. .mov vs .mp4) ? I'm curious as premiere pro 4 which I use won't import .mov files.
spidiq8 You can get free file type conversion software. Set from .mov to mp4 or whatever file type you like. Save it then open your newly converted file in your editor.
james fox Thanks, I use an eos m now and they work in my machine, I was trying it on an older machine with an older version of pp installed. Appreciate the help though
Were did you get the tripod you had on the table
The Rode mics do a solid job.
We have the T4i and have to film a dance recital from the back of the audience. Would you suggest different settings for distance? I do not think there will be low light, but there will be a few colored spot lights with florescent house lights that stay on the whole time. We plan to use a tripod and buy an extra battery. Also, we will set it up, using auto focus, before changing to manual focus, but with the entire stage being used, will that stage-depth make a difference during manual focus?
Anyplace where it isn't in direct sunlight and moisture levels are low. If it is clean and dry in bag and never gets damp - sure. Shelf is fine too. My sits out around the house most days.
Do you have a link to the mic?
We are using either an 18-55 regular lens or 55-200 long lens. I don't have the lens that helps with the jumping. Is the magnification trick during the auto focus set up?
Only the best ;)
First step is to set levels manually on your camera, watch the little feedback meter - should be hitting the 12 mark consistently. Then in post I do some slight editing to reduce the static fuzz, I used Final Cut Pro which does a decent enough job. Hope that helps.
Press the liveview button the back. That starts and stops recording. You can also change the shutter button to start and stop recording in the camera setup/custom menu section.
What is the brand of the $20. lapel mic you used in this video? It was very helpful.
Also, have you found any way to use an external monitor with the T4i?
Sharon
Hi Sharon - it is an Audio-tech mic www.amazon.com/dp/B002HJ9PTO/?tag=yt_dpr-20 I find that it needs a little post processing to sound the best but I am happy with it, great for outdoors or noisy environments. For external monitor you can run a mini HDMI to a monitor it is clean/recordable but does give you a big view. Hope that helps.
Im new to dslr and Ive got the kit 18-55 lens for now. I have to shoot an interview and I've been practicing but NOTHIN I try gets me sharp video. I have subject 5 feet off wall and cam 5 feet from subject. Mid shot with 2 softboxes, I lowered iso to 400-800 (tired all in-between) shooting 24fps, 50 shutter. Just doesn't look sharp. Also I'm shooting in standard picture style, what did you use?
