    The 14in macbook pro has been my main laptop since its launch, and since then, I’ve edited many youtube videos on it, taken it through multiple trips across the country, and had a ton of time to reflect on my life with this machine. It’s been my go-to machine to get all my youtube related work done. So, today, we’re gonna talk about how the body of the machine has held up, it’s impact on my user experience, and well, if it’s a purchase I would make again today. Let’s get started with a longer term review.
    First, let’s look at how the body of the 14in Macbook pro has held up. Apple laptops are known for their sturdy-feeling aluminum build. For the 14in MacBook pro. The body has held up pretty well. The hinge still works as intended, and all of the ports still function just as they did on day one of owning this machine. In comparison, my previous M1 MacBook air was dealing with one of the USB-C ports not reliably working or charging at this point.
    I replaced an M1 Macbook Air for the 14in MacBook Pro, which takes everything I loved about that machine, then literally doubled it. The 120hz refresh rate display makes scrolling and general usage feel butter smooth. Yes the notch on top exists, but in the real world, it just fades into the background of what you’re doing. Battery life will last you all day or more, and while I did only get the cheaper 67 watt power adapter, it charges fast enough and you don’t have to use magsafe with it. And the mini-led display is really nice to look at and in day to day mixed usage you don’t really notice any kind of blooming. The speakers still put most other non-macbook laptop speakers to shame. To be honest I can’t really find anything within my own use cases that really makes this machine struggle. Having multiple 4K displays plugged in, and dozens of tabs open are no struggle for the MacBook pro, and editing 24mp photos in Affinity photo always goes without a hitch. So from a content creator viewpoint. This machine feels almost perfect. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t things the MacBook pro isn’t great at.
    It’s been a year and a half since Apple’s transition from Intel CPUs to their own ARM-based Apple Silicon chips, and a large majority of popular apps are Apple Silicon optimized now, meaning, they’re taking the change in architecture to maximize performance and compatibility of these machines. That being said, this change has also limited the functionality and performance of the M1 Pro MacBook Pro and all Apple silicon machines in some ways. The first is you can no longer natively run Windows through bootcamp, but you can use windows through virtual machines with software like Parallels, but you’d still have to emulate x86 apps, meaning a hit on performance and the second, is that gaming on the mac is still not ideal, with most games unavailable on the Mac, or written for the old intel Macs. And while you can download ios games and apps on apple silicon macs, they aren’t optimized for mice and pointers, and games that I’d want to play, like Genshin Impact, are unavailable. And the ports. The cheaper Macbook Air and 13in Macbook pro only have 2 Usb-c ports. And because of that, workloads that require a ton of external devices are difficult to execute on those machines. The ports fill up and they fill up fast. On the 14in Macbook pro, I’m able to just forget about the dongles altogether and know that I’ll have all my needs covered or with minimal swapping.
    With the 14in macbook pro, it’s hard to look you in the eye, and say owning this thing has been a pain, because it’s been nothing but fantastic. It has long battery life that’s still going strong, all the different ports are back, $2,000 is a lot to spend on a laptop, especially one that to this day is in high demand. The display is nice to look at, the build of the machine feels nice in the hand, and in my day to day workflow, I can’t find anything that I use it for that really causes the macbook pro to struggle. It will handle 95% of people’s workloads just fine. The display makes it great for media consumption, the speakers sound good, the battery life is great, the performance is great, it rarely gets loud, and rarely gets hot. This might be the best all-around laptop Apple has made in years.

    I made the same jump from the MacBook Air base model to the M1 Pro MackBook Pro 1 TB. I use my machine primarily for media production and just about everything else. I was pleasantly surprised with the front-facing 1080p camera for my zoom conferences and I'm even going to start using it for shooting training videos faster.
    Typing on this machine is much more pleasant and the 1" display increase surprised me as well. There seems to be much more screen real estate than I expected. The way they modified all the software to incorporate the camera notch is quite cleverly executed to the point that I completely forget it's even there. In fact, the way they've incorporated the camera space is almost as if it should've been using that screen space all along. No more repositioning your eyes to appear to be looking at the person you're conversing with online.
    The speeds of this machine are so much faster than my lightening fast MacBook Air M1 that I still can't believe my eyes.
    There's a fan in this machine? I certainly can't hear it.
    Battery life appears to be significantly less than my M1 MacBook Air, but having the return to the MagSafe charger is making that particular issue much less intrusive.

And i have ports, and an sd card slot, so usefull, and magsafe is back, but i think it's a bit to strong, i mean when the connector is pulled from an angle, it releases just like the old one, but when pulled straight, it pulls the laptop with it, so having a case with anti-slip feet on it like i did on my 2012 retina is a must!

    I have a 2016 Pro w/Touchbar that I somewhat love. Have had to replace the keyboard twice now, once out of pocket and feel I’m coming up on another one. I do a lot of work with Adobe products.. does anyone have experience with those on this machine? Work as well if not better?

    Proud 16" M1 Pro (base) user here. Hands down the best laptop I've ever owned. What a pleasure to use! I keep my XPS 9500 to play the odd Windows-based game but it's mostly collecting dust docked beside my M1 Pro. Every time I turn it on, it reminds me how happy the M1 Pro makes me. Battery life, speakers, quiet, beautiful miniLED XDR, etc. etc. Now if only Apple could translate this into their iPhone lineup! Thanks for the review!

      Same here.
      Im still using a HP Omen 17 sometimes but just for gaming anymore, the M1 Pro MacBook just replaced all my computers except for gaming (ofc). I mean... its more powerful and efficient than my desktop, and completely silent (which my "silent" desktop isnt even!)
      Just under heavy, sustained load i heard the fans ONCE (barely noticable!), but my windows notebook would sweat and sound like a starting jet, and my desktop would also get noisy and produce a lot heat in the room.
      The (base model) M1 Pro machines in 14 and 16" i would even consider as "affordable"... just because they are that "universal" and basically replace Desktop and Windows notebook 100% (if gaming or only 3d rendering isnt a thing)
      Wondering how well M1/M2s perform if majority of software is Apple silicon native AND optimized for its architecture. Many apps are already "native", but they just added with recent updates for example GPU-rendering in the case of Lighroom after over a year being "M1 native" already.

    Just bought the MacBook Pro 14 M1 Pro. Awesome machine, and despite this being my first ever MacBook it is very easy to use. But beware of the arm chipset. Most programs are not ready, and even if they are, I guarantee you they have plug ins that are not. If you are doing specifically stuff on the creative side then this being Apple, you have a good chance not to run into many problems with arm. If you are a software developer you know your stuff and don’t need me to tell you what’s what. But if you are anything in between be extra careful. There are a lot of stuff that are not plug and play right now. I am an engineer and I do some software development (mostly as a hobby), and even before I got this machine I realized it was going to be a bit of a project. And it is. It is the best project ever though because when you make full of the m1 pro you see a laptop that is faster than everything and has a battery life of two days.
    Also I have to comment on the screen. It is by far the best screen I’ve ever seen.
    Overall: awesome for standard stuff, super fast and efficient for coding but you need to get your hands a bit dirty to make sure you are using the full potential, cannot recommend for heavy engineering work despite the powerful hardware as programs like Solidworks, ANSYS, mathcad, Creo are all not available.

    • @raider2442
      @raider2442 Год назад

      Can you not run Solidworks, ANSYS etc. on a Virtual Machine? I’m currently an engineering student looking to buy it. Was planning on using a virtual machine like parallels for all the windows programs. What do you think?

    • @rafaeldomenikos5978
      @rafaeldomenikos5978 Год назад +1

      @@raider2442 no there aren’t versions for those programs on arm, so even if you use them on a virtual machine, the VM would run windows for arm and therefore these programs would not be able to even install.

    windows has released arm64 builds now. The latest version of Parallels lets you install Windows natively, not emulating x64, and it runs perfectly. And as a long-term VMWare guy, let me just say that Parallels is a fantastic piece of software. I've never used it before but I love the way they do the Coherence mode. It's seamless.
