Dave Weckl is the slickest and finest drummer to ever grace the drum kit, his playing and precision is spot on and he makes it look so easy. A true monster musician and one of the best in the world, it doesn't get any better than Dave Weckl 🥁 🎶
Just such a pleasure to watch and listen. He just gets better and better. I met him a clinic about twenty years ago. Great guy. Very humble. Beautiful music Dave.
Dave its a Absolute Pleasure to Listen to A Schooled percussionist improviser ......whos Talents have Reached Above and beyond All the Rest your a Icon throughout the Entire Planet....... and inspire not Just only Me The whole Drumming .. Colossis in the Entire World
Dave is incredible at phrasing; one of the more overlooked aspects of his playing is his accuracy and consistency. The guy barely ever misses the bell of the ride. His tone is very smooth as a result.
I thought this was 6/4. I was taught that 6/8 had a triplet feel, such as "The Game Maker" by Return To Forever and the instrumental break in "Free Will" by Rush. Regardless of that, tho, thanks for pointing out the 5/8 (or 5/4) measures.
There's another video of this piece by George Whitty on keyboards, Ric Fierabracci on bass and Tom Brechtlein on drums and believe me it's worth seeing. So check it out and let me know what you think.
Both are great versions. DW may seem to overplay it, but I think this performance was a solo performance and the audience came to see his skills and mastery, so he delivered.
I first saw a clinic with Weckl back in 89 or 90, I didn't like him at all. all these years later I get it. He's amazing, just all comes from his wrist too and looks effortless.
+andrew blackwell So you're saying Jojo got his bass & drum groove from Dave? His digital beats from Dave? I listened to alot of Dave and havent heard this in his playing until now.
When you come to youtube for something totally unrelated, but get hooked on Weckl vids for half an hour.

No one in the world plays like him. IMO no one in the history of drums.
This is out of this world!

Les Robinson his drumming is hypnotic
He's gotta be my favorite drummer! Just love his feel!

Such a master.

Nobody does 6/8 better than Weckl. I'm a retired drummer, and semi-retired percussionist, and all I can do is shake my head in blown-awayness.
just a mind boggling drummer and musician. cream of the crop!
Proud to live in the days of Dave Weckl...
I enjoy how he can stay in control of that tough beat and still flow around..great job.
Sooooo many good drummers out there, but Weckl is truly a beast of his own! Nice upload, thanks;)
Fffggiiioll
weckl is incredible.
This is poetry
I like the four bars of 5/8 thrown in @6:21, and then back to 6/8.

I'm amazed that you can count time... I'm totally lost in this type of music.

I just saw it before watching this one and I like that one much better.
Tom Brecktlein is so much cleaner drummer than DW. A no-nonsense drummer - This clinic DW is overplaying but hey, I´ll take it -
Both are great versions. DW may seem to overplay it, but I think this performance was a solo performance and the audience came to see his skills and mastery, so he delivered.
Such smooth transitions, beautiful phrasing, Mr Weckl is incredible man! Anyone know the practiced pad!
Yeah Dave!
That bell groove is sick.

On this song I miss so much the sound of the old David's Zildjian K ride...

Drum God Dave Weckl, I want that ride cymbal what is it?
+bruce cryor legacy ride
Wow!
does anyone have playalong from this music?
Who wrote You Rang? First l heard it from George Whitty...
What's that going up and down on his snare?
+Ben Papsun check it out: www.musiciansfriend.com/drums-percussion/remo-dave-weckl-active-drum-dampening-system
+Fernando Coelho Thank you! Interestingly, most of the commenters seem to agree that it doesn't change the sound of their snares...
+Ben Papsun You´re welcome. I noticed it too. Maybe, Weckel is endorsing the dampening thing.
+Fernando Coelho He actually invented it. In my experience, it does change the sound, but only slightly (sort of like a small moon gel)
5:25 a smile! That's rare
dam my cowbell has been mounted wrong
this has changed everything
I now love cowbell
yeah..he's been doin this for the last 30 years *..sequence d drumming

I can't help but hear some Jojo Mayer in this.
+Stephanie Grow
Where do you think Jojo got his stuff from?
+andrew blackwell Buddy Rich?
+Stephanie Grow
ok they all got their stuff from him! Weckl redefined groove in the 80s I think he is just as influential as Rich....
+andrew blackwell So you're saying Jojo got his bass & drum groove from Dave? His digital beats from Dave? I listened to alot of Dave and havent heard this in his playing until now.
+Stephanie Grow
there is a Vic Firth performance video on youtube with Weckl solo, watch it
Hell of a drummer, but someone should teach Dave proper gain stucture.
Jim Mingo what is gain structure!?
Who the fuck is gonna teach Dave something about drums he doesn't already know
First Comment
10 people don't like surf and turf.
Has he ever played not perfectly?
Proud to live in the days of Dave Weckl...
