That darn Err70 crash. Ugh! I had that both with my R5 and R7. The R5 was two months old, had to send it to Canon, and it turned out to need a new circuit board. The R7 was five months old when the Err70 came up. I called CPS. Arrangements were made to send the camera in. Since Thanksgiving was the next week, I planned to send it in the following week. Lo and behold, Canon released a firmware update to address the Err70 issue. It worked. I haven't had the issue since the update. I wish Canon would do further testing, even send cameras out to chosen photographers, with the update, for beta testing. A firmware update should work by the time we get it.
Sometimes issues are so rare and specific, they only show after being out and used by the public for a while (ie, large number of users are needed). Most likely this wouldn't have showed up with a few chosen photographers.
@DRIS Very true. It's just frustrating. I learned my lesson when I had an R6. Did one of the updates in the first day or two, and it messed up my AF. I had to roll back to the previous firmware. Now I wait at least a week or more to update.
Thanks for the update! I didn’t see this error but my R6 did lock up on me this weekend having updated to 1.8.0 earlier in the week. Fortunately, I just turned it off, pulled the battery for a few seconds and then put it back and everything was fine after that.
This is why I follow Simon's advice and wait to install firmwares. I'm still on v.1.6 on both my R5 and R6. I have Davinci Resolve Studio 18 on my new laptop, but still have Studio 17 on my desktop that is my main editing machine. V.18 has certain desirable new features but I'm wary about Davinci upgrades, and I never use their beta releases even though Blackmagic aggressively pushes them.
I'm the opposite: I always upgrade to latest versions of firmware/software when I can. I have been a pro photog for about 18 years and used to build custom PCs for about 12 (and have been using computers for longer than that) and I'm always first to update firmware to the latest. I've never had a major issue (never had any issue with a camera, just some bugs with computer firmwares on the PC side). In the rare instance that there is a bug, it's usually addressed/fixed promptly especially if it is a major bug (which again is very, rare). Sure there is a small chance a bug might pop up temporarily, but there is a bigger chance the update will fix old issues or improve performance. Also, you SHOULD update for security reasons. The pros almost always outweigh the cons (in my experience). I've been hearing the "wait... I never update to the latest firmware/software/OS" for decades now but have never personally witnessed this being an issue.
@DRIS You forgot to leave your email address in your comment so I can contact you when I have an issue with a first day firmware update. 😉 LOL! You make really great valid points. Security updates, like the ones I get for my phone, are always done right away. Computer too. Thank you for your thoughts.
One reason I despise Adobe products is because you simply cannot purchase the software anymore. I don't care for a subscription that's cheaper than buying one sandwich per month : I want to own what I use. Allows for installing on an offline workstation that will be functional for a decade..but then obsolescence is less efficient and they don't want that we all know it. The endless circle of forced updates leading to forced upgrades leading to forced updates...all the while being a hostage of customer/technical support replying they can't help whenever your system is not up to date..hold on I started retching..
Hi, Simon! Thanks for a great canal. What about the R7. I have a problem - Am I the only one who has AF problems with the R7, haven't heard anything about it. After waiting for 6 months I received my Canon R7 there was a firmware 1.2 update on the Canon website. So, I installed this. Went out to photograph the White-throated Dipper, and to my surprise the autofocus worked very strangely. I was able to lock focus on the eye but there was a bit of focus breathing. But, here it comes - when I release the focus button, it starts focus hunting by itself and never stops, even though I don't touch anything on the camera (will drain the battery). Since I didn't know what to do, I called my camera dealer and they advised me to restore the "factory settings" and some other settings. So I did, and AF returned to normal. So far so good, had to reprogram all settings and button functions. But there is more to come, a week or so ago a new firmware 1.3 arrived for the R7. Thought that now Canon has fixed the bug from 1.2. I installed the new upgrade, and guess what - the corrupt autofocus was back. Canon must be aware of the problem, why don't they fix it. I follow you on RUclips and with your contacts you can usually give answers…. Kind regards, Göran Klavestrand, Sweden
@Ordinary Filmmaker Great video as always! I had a question! Since the R6 and R5 have the same processor and came out at the same time, do you think the Canon R6 will also get a firmware update adding in some of the updates from the big R5 firmware update such as possibly the removal of the record limit and improvements of overheating in the R6? Even though the R6 mark 2 came out and has no record limit, I know majority people will agree that they should take it out of the R6 as other cheaper models such as the Canon R10, R7 and R8 have no limit. Hopefully Canon is watching and listening and can provide for their customers, just a shame that the R6 isn't getting as much love as the R5.
Thank for your video! My camera (Canon R) is updated with 1.8.0 since I bought , and now just showed the ERR70. Canon website last update for R Cameras is that on, Do you know if I can download update 1.8.1 to install in my R camera it's going to work?
I hope this time error 70 gets fixed! My R6 sometimes still gets frozen, and the tali light from the SD writing keeps on for a couple of seconds until back to normal, even using Pro Grade or SanDisk 300x.
I don't really understand how this can happen, I understand how a Windows update can throw something out of the park, there are almost infinite possible configurations, with so many possible components of a Windows PC, but the only things you can change on a camera is the memory card, so it should be a lot easier to produce and test firmware. Anyway, to that end my process is [usually] to wait and see... I usually update software after at least a month or so after release on a priority basis unless there is a critical need, sometimes, especially with camera firmware, there is nothing specific to my usage. That said, I like a challenge and some updates are done asap, that has bitten me in the past, but I am what I am! 🙃 I once had an update trash my Lr catalog during a catalog upgrade, even with a backup in place there was no actual fix, as this happened every time the upgrade was run, eventually, Adobe fixed the issue that was causing it for some people, it just meant I could not use the latest version for a while, not the end of the world! Probably the kiss of death saying this, but I've not had an issue with an Andriod update, these are of course usually device-specific, so the same scenario as camera firmware, it should be low risk, but clearly, sometimes isn't. Anyway, the R5 update in a few months, unless I'm feeling brave!
Err 70 on my R6 , have had it checked over and apparently the Sensor needs replacing , this sucks as the camera is only just 26 months old. My R6 is now costing more to fix than its probaly worth, Canon dont care about their customers and quite happy to charge for what is in effect a defective manufacturing issue.
That's what happened to my SONY, the sensor burned out and it was hell, Sony after service is EXPENSIVE and horrible experience trying to get it fixed or sensor replaced. I had awesome after service with Canon, professional and prompt. Sony, where in the hell is my replacement battery for my VAiO exploding battery? Still waiting.
Yeah, got off windows in 2007. Got tired of having t make partitions to reimage the OS ever 6 months... My editing machine gets updated a month or two after an update, software is even longer.
Mobiles do silent updates you can't cancel/postpone in the dead of night "when you're not using it". Started years ago..people aren't even aware of this
Dear Simon, Thank you for this video. Please consider making a video on your workflow with your R5 and Ninja V. I have both and would be interested in learning more. Like you, my firmware is behind (1.6 for R5 and can't even remember for Ninja). I am eagerly waiting for the pixel-shifting R5 firmware and will install a couple of weeks later. The only thing that I am current is my Adobe Creative Suite. Best wishes, Jose.

Don't assume Canon knows. If you've seen nothing about this problem, report it to Canon.

Canon has given the R5 far more enhancements than the R6, and with the R6 II out, I don't expect much in a firmware update for the R6.
good firmware advice, Very helpful Thanks Simon.
Very welcome John

Good advice regardless of your brand. Thanks Simon.

Good Morning. Firmware 1.8.1 has not made it to the USA site yet.. maybe in a few hours?
Yep, but you can download Japanese version no issues. Run the site through google translate ;)
Thanks for advice. downloaded and installing. I know im jumping the gun. but I have a shoot soon and praying I have no issues. Have a great day!
Is the Sony A7RV better than Leica M11?
Thanks for the information as you always say wait for awhile before I will install
No sense being on the bleeding edge.
I don’t understand why you don’t have 80,000 subscribers?!
I don't know RV. I keep improving so one day I hope ;)
Wise information Simon. 👍👍
Thanks Jacques ;)

I’ve been getting error 70 on my R5 while using my Atomos Ninja V and recording in the “special 5K” mode…I am updated to 1.8.1 on my R5
I record 4K HQ and have no issues with same firmware. Is it only in special 5K? I'd recommend reaching out to Atomos first, then Canon.

Perhaps canon needs to start releasing BETA updates, so users who are willing to trial new software can find these bugs before the final release 🤷♂️
Constantly I get err 70. Been going on forever with my r5. Getting annoying! Current firmware!
