    So Family Crest came out in 2003, in Runescape Classic, and at that time, all the desert area south of Al Kharid didn't exist. It's one of those things where at the time of release, the hints in the text do the job just fine, but 20 years on, it offers barely any real advice

      Ya but even then, the fact that you need to randomly speak to the gem trader first is dumb, and could leave you lost and wandering. Either the quest should tell you that he went to buy some jewelry in the desert (prompting you to go to the gem stall) or you should be able to spot and talk to the brother without the gem traders help.

    • @ThePlotHole1

      As an amendment, turns out this quest came out in early 2002, while the first chunk of the Kharidian Desert DID come out in Classic, but not until about a year later in early/mid 2003. I do wish they'd go back and give a QoL pass on some of these older quests; Dragon Slayer 1's rework in 2007 is a great example of breathing new life into old quests

      I've said it on previous videos but it also helps that when a quest is released it adds all the npcs associated with it. So even if you don't know what to do. Savvy players would noticed an npc who didn't exist before and talk to them

    For what it’s worth, the Gem Trader in Al Kharid was released the same day as this quest. So basically, having to talk to him for the quest was the subtle way of informing players “hey, there’s now a gem store in Al Kharid that you can buy/sell gems to”.
    I fully understand how anybody that isn’t using the wiki or quest helper plug-in would get shafted here, while trying to do this quest on their own though.

      He is also one of the first npcs you see when you enter the desert area, and being told from the first brother to ask people in the desert would make it fast if you talked to everyone you saw in the desert because it would only be one or two npcs before you got it

    I saw the thumbnail and the title and *knew* I had to click this video.
    I've been doing something similar, trying my hand at all the quests some 15+ years after I last did them, with no guides/wiki/anything else beyond the legacy Java client and in-game clues.
    I did Family Crest a week or so ago and found Caleb pretty easily, but panicked when he said the next brother was "in the desert."
    Scanned the world map in awe of this wild goose chase, but then remembered that I'd been through Al Kharid a hundred times and has always seen some noble-type gentleman in the mines, so I figured that must have been him. Talked to "Man", got the whole "I'm busy" dialogue. Examined him, and it gave me the same examine text as the other brother, so I was *sure* he had to be the right guy. Tried using Caleb's crest piece on him. Nothing interesting happened. Tried using a gold ore and gold bar on him. Nothing. Went back to Catherby, talked to Caleb again, then talked to "Man" again. Nothing. Went to Varrock to talk to the father again, then "Man", and still nothing.
    After an hour or two of this, I finally caved and consulted the Wiki, which told me *you had to talk to the gem trader first*. I can't put into words how pissed off I was.
    All that is to say, I empathize with you and you've earned yourself a new subscriber.

    A major issue is that Family Crest was released 9/4/2002 while everything south of Shantay Pass came out 14/4/2003 or later, so the clue of "talk to people in the desert" was a much shorter list of people, several of which were added in the same update. This is something that comes up in a lot of the older quests where they make some measure of vagaries about describing people and places and were never touched up to be more specific as the denser world now requires.

    The moment I saw shanty I knew this was gonna take forever. This quest is incredibly old. It was released before Uzer or polnivneach and Al kharid is part of the desert. (not sure if Shanty pass or the desert prison were released yet.) So I guess a tip is knowing the age of a quest helps with vague Quest dialogue. the older the more likely it is towards the F2P area.

    The "desert" when Family Crest was released was nothing but Al Kharid, so narrowing it down was super easy back then. But now it's way too broad to reasonably solve it with nothing but the information the game gives you, you're 100% right about that.
    The entire problem could easily be fixed by just slightly updating the dialogue to specifically mention Al Kharid, instead of just "the desert," but I highly doubt Jagex would go back and make minor corrections like that, specifically because of the existence of online guides filling in those kinds of gaps.
    Unfortunately, that's a problem I expect you're going to run into again in the future. Jagex just doesn't really update quest dialogue for new additions to the game.

    • @freshairkaboom8171
      @freshairkaboom8171 11 месяцев назад +2

      Exactly, if we think about it, almost no players are ever going to complain about it, and the change would likely require testing which could hog up to two developers for maybe 30-50 minutes. That's a lot of money in developer time. Not only for their salary, but how much money they could make doing something more important like bug fixing. Maybe if it was part of a bigger overhaul of changes to old quests. But I doubt that would be prioritized, and it's not like "the desert" is impossible to scour through, it'll just take longer.
      Not only that, but given how "beyond White Wolf Mountain" literally just means Catherby, the entrance to what is beyond White Wolf Mountain, it can reasonable be assumed that "The desert" also means the entrance to the desert. At least it can be inferred.

    • @mdccxxvii

      @suparki123 6 месяцев назад

      @@mikkoitasalo8940 Youve clearly never worked as a developer at an established company. A "simple" 5 minute change to the code requires a lot more time in bureaucracy. They would have to convince investors this is worthwhile and then poll it. A mass QOL update to old quests sounds much more likely.

    • @Noman1000
      @Noman1000 6 месяцев назад +3

      @suparki123 lol investors are not involved in the minutiae of dialog fixes or minor code changes. A change from "desert" to "Al Kharid" would be something 90% of players wouldn't notice given most people use guides or plugins to begin with and Jagex has done way bigger changes unpolled before.

Most people doing Tourist Trap just come in, bum rush the captain, then overlook everything about bribing guards and the nomads. Also when this quest first released they had to spawn multiple mercenary captains because everyone had to wait around for the one captain to respawn so they could do the quest. It was a lot like the lesser demon in wizards tower when leagues 4 released. That's also why there's multiple bankers in every bank.

    Your rant is justified. The Avan Fitzharmon part is just stupidly designed :).
    It was just a lot easier when this quest was released. The entire Desert south of Shantay Pass did not exist yet.

    You've already beaten a few quests that broke my unguided streak, so I was surprised this one gave you such trouble. Maybe it's just because I spent a ton of time in slumming it in f2p, but I immediately thought of the Al Kharid mine and found Avan very quickly. Of course what you did also makes sense in retrospect, it really is hostile quest design. He should absolutely not have different dialogue just because you haven't "asked around" yet. I can kind of understand what the dev must have been thinking -- there are a few other times you're supposed to do the RPG trope of asking locals for rumors or whatever -- but it was a bad decision. Don't worry, you only have like 5-10 more insane moon logic quests before they start getting more reasonable lol. I'm sure you'll feel Jagex's quest design improving over time, or at least shifting to "figure out the PVM puzzle" instead of "figure out the loony adventure game puzzle".

    This is awesome, I have always wanted to watch a video of the dialogue/story of all the quests, and almost went as far as making my own series but it looks like this series is just as good or even better then what i was making!
    I was going to put text to speech & try and match the npc’s dialog with a voice tho

    I was very lucky when I did this quest unguided myself. I had noticed the man in the yellow cape several times during my visits to the mine, and his examine text mentioning him being noble had always stood out to me as odd. So when I got to that part of Family Crest, he was immediately who I thought of. And even though I was thrown off a little by being unable to talk to him at first, the gem trader was basically the next closest NPC to talk to, so it didn't take me long to resolve.

    I’m happy to say I worked out all the way through watching your video so I feel like I walked the desert with you, a bit.
    Though hopefully none of the silent black screen quips had valuable info as I couldn’t always catch them.

      Highly recommend at least trying without the massive todo list of the quest helper. Try figuring out what the next step is. Go ahead and look up information for limited things. You don't have to go full "alien food" on it. But the quests are some of the best in the business. They do attempt to make it figure outable. They released Slayer specifically such that "kill 17 gargoyles for their tongues" quests can't exist. The quests are weird, yes. But that's why you play anyway. You are playing a medievel point and click adventure simulator game thing...Embrace!

    Your frustration is valid. They actually changed this in the RS3 version of the quest! You no longer need to speak to the Gem Trader first, and his name is Avan, not Man, so you can just go talk to him. OSRS needs to make the same change.

    I also spent hours wandering the desert when I did this quest. I just didn't think of Al Kharid as being part of the desert. People tend to say you'll get stuck on something like MEP2 but I find any well-defined puzzle, no matter how difficult, is never as bad as something where there's a bad hint and massive scope for searching. The quests that come out now are so much slicker, well-designed, and well-hinted. But a sick part of me misses getting stuck for a while on the old ones with their weird logic, vague hints, and no respect for the player's time.
