Couple of easy suggestions: Rotate the opening in the firebox to one side so you don't have to reach over the fire to get to the opening. Metal fire tray so you can start the fire then slide it back deeper into the firebox.
I love the comedy of errors throughout this video with the genuine & sincere banter throughout. You are somebody I’d definitely be friends with as your silliness is inline with mine. Cool video and will definitely give it a try. Cheers and God bless 🙏🏼🍕🇺🇸
Your right about the science when it comes to why concrete can "explodes" when heated too high and for too long. However extremely dry concreate also has it's own problems, it being very brittle. Bricks also have the advantage of being able to contract and expand none uniformly without compromising the structure as a whole (too within reason). This isn't the case for a continuous piece of concrete which will form cracks wherever two sections of different temperatures meet. This is likely why your concrete firepit topper hasn't cracked since it being composed of separate pieces, rather than a continuous ring, allows different parts of it expand and contract as needed like bricks.
I’ve seen this on RUclips, so many cool and different designs, this is a great video, i like that u can make something for a good price and not go and spend the big bucks on. Something like already prepaid pizza ovens, the key to pizza i was told was making sure to have a good high heat to cook the pizza fast, ad hey, who doesn’t love pizza. Another great video, have a great weekend my friends.
Seriously, the comedy on your channel is what drew me in. The part with the ferro rod and the gas lighter had me in stiches. New subscriber to your channel, really enjoying it and love the way you bring a family friendy atmosphere which sets you apart from other channels.
The exploding pizza oven animation was hysterical. I too wondered if it was safe. Not just for the exploding concrete, but also if it’s actually “food safe”. It may not matter since the pizza is not on there very long…. Thanks for sharing!
You are just too much fun! I've been watching your videos for over an hour and I really enjoy your humor. THanks for the education along the way. Greg from Hartsville, SC
After the last two or so years of doommongering it's great to listen to someone with a sense of humour, and happy disposition, lucky family!!! Good luck to you all!
First, I have seen many Barbecue pits made with cinder blocks so it seem to work good. Second, thanks for showing all ups and downs while constructing your projects; keeps it real because that is exactly what happens when we men build stuff. And thanks for the comedy relief. Gotta a laugh.
I'd suggest investing in one of the smaller rd metal peels with the longer handle. Use the wood one you already have to initially put it in. But the smaller metal peels are perfect for when the crust becomes more rigid with some heat to start rotating the pizza every 20-30 seconds for even heat on it. Also easier to pull the finished pie out with them.
Oh and I am definitely going to try this before attempting the one made with a barrel. Btw, we do share a love for pizza pie lol. I literally have it days and days in a row and have wanted to build an outside oven like this for years.
This is right up my alley, it will match my brick grill, brick rocket stove and washing machine tub burn pit on cinder blocks. I think I will put this oven on some cinder blocks to just bring it up higher and rotate the opening so I am not reaching over the fire.
We build one too. Pizza peel made from sheet metal and old broom stick. Actually $0 for us because all the materials were just lying around in grandma's garden. Worked perfectly. Great keep it simple holiday experiment.
A couple things to help out: When using a Ferro rod, hold your knife steady and draw the rod, it is much easier to control. Invest in a long handled metal pizza peel, or use welders gloves with the peel you have. Although it is a lot of work building a cob oven is a great time and activity with kids. Keep up the great videos!
I have been watching several of your videos and recently subscribed because they're all great. I just finished an outdoor fire pit with gravel, plants, mulch, lights, etc and had the idea to add on a pizza oven extension and my reaction was exactly the same as yours, it's a lot of work that I don't have time for... I saw this design on another channel and found a couple of videos making the same style oven... I really appreciate your efforts and sharing your experience with not only the build, but the supplies used since I'm also in FL and probably will have access to the same supplies... Thanks and I cannot wait to try this oven out myself!!!
@@HAXMAN Maybe you're over doing that last part a little bit. The proper way to use a ferro rod is to hold down your fluff with the end of the rod, then your strikes will go right where they are supposed to.
"You OK? Si!" 😂😂😂 I haven't built or will probably ever make any of your projects but find your videos entertaining. I really enjoy your accents especially 🇬🇧. From the UK
I like using welding gloves when cooking over a fire. Also I also use corn meal on the bottom of the pizza to help it roll of the pizza peel easier. Thanks for the video!
😂😂😂 Enjoyed the video.....and yup, the comedy of errors and humour involved ! Building a proper pizza oven but will definitely do this one on the next trip into the wild, with a firelighter ! 😂
Very cool. If you put the loader for the pizza on the opposite side of where you put the logs to burn - it might fix those difficulties you were having with the heat trying to get the pizzas in and out.
First time watching you video You remind me a lot of my dad when I would help him in the shed But he only had boys and would get mad at us for holding the flash light wrong lol Always fun helping him though Very nice place too. I can tell you have done many thing to improve your house My dad and I turned a lake house at the ozarks into a 8 bed room house We turned the garage into 3 bed rooms and built a shed in the front (the back is the lake lol) and a tornado shelter in the basement into a loft with a bed on top and bottom Overall great video and glad I can subscribe
Great video. I love dem pizzas too. Lol. Looks like a great backyard addition. I love how your family is involved in activities like that. A longer metal spatula might be the ticket, but otherwise looks perfect. Might I suggest a bowl of Blue Bell afterwards.
Hey, I'm no pizza oven expert but I was just thinking maybe you could put the side you put the pizza on the opposite side of the whole for the firewood so you don't burn yourself. Great content as always though! 😁
@@HAXMAN that's a good point, maybe possible to vent to the sides or or have the pizza opening to the side. If you make any alterations I'd love to see a video of what you come up with
First time watching. I had to sub when the girls looked like my kids with that "my dad is a dork" look. Great vid! This would be fun to tinker with to see how it could be improved.
To all the people saying rotate the opening, this design would lend itself to perfect, even convection. If the flames bother you a simple door made from a brick or plate metal would create a temporary heat shield. Also grafting longer handles to pizza peels are simple affairs depending on how ghetto you want them to look. I.E. a hose clamp or two and a broom handle.
For best results, hold the knife steady, and pull back on the rod. This makes the sparks hit the same place on the lint the whole time, and you don't hit the lint with your knife on the follow through.
Great video!!! I gotta try this trick!! Look up diy pizza peel. Or go to a restaurant supply store get a good metal peel ... home made pizzas are delicious!!
To anyone thinking of doing this- fucking do it. I’ve done it copying this almost to a the letter and it’s amazing. Make sure there is a big enough opening for flames to come over the top of the pizza and put the fire opening on the side rather than the front as mentioned elsewhere in the comments! Works really well and cooks super super fast. It did however crack the middle slab for me so unsure what to buy that won’t crack but it’s incredible!
Wonderful video and helpful step by step instructions. I would like to suggest , make your opening for the oven part in a different direction ( like a 1/4 of a turn type of design). Then the flames are not facing directly towards you. This will prevent the heat from coming at you and be a safer alternative to cooking pizza. Also hopefully this would work, maybe get a type of steel mesh racks (non toxic metal and heat resistance) to stabilize the bricks and then placing pavers on top? That way bricks will stay in place evenly and gain more length on the sides? Thank you sharing. Take care. 👋 😁
@@HAXMAN i do paver installations so I would do a paver base with fire brick and use that as my area for firewood to heat...I might go higher as my knees are shot lol.

Yes that sounds good. I did look on Amazon and they have some long handled Pizza peels !
There are smart people on RUclips.
how about a pic of the firebox on the side? trying to visualize it
And this is why at 10:00 pm on a Friday night, I started to build a pizza oven... (Okay but the exploding oven scene was my favorite)
