  • I parked at the Shortoff trailhead parking lot and crossed the Linville River using the MST and hiked along the river for day one. It was 13 miles and 1872 feet of elevation gain. #linvillegorge #backpacking #hikingadventures #wncmountains #blueridgemountains #appalachianmountains

Holy cow that crossing man! The skinny waterfall is Cathedral Falls, I was there a month or so ago. It was nice! Anyway...good video as always. Looking forward to next part.

Thank you my friend. I appreciate the info. And yes the river was swollen from all the rain we’ve gotten, almost had me second guessing myself.

Geat video. Like you, i have spent many days in the gorge, but never did Faulkner Flats. That will be my next hike up there. I like that you mentioned that though you were using GPS, you need to bring map and compass along in case. Its easy to get turned around in the gorge and you should know how to navigate old school in there. and always expect to be confused at some point. I would like to do the grand loop but im old and broken down at this point.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. You’re never too old but it is a real challenge. Maybe if I had more time, I’d stretch it out even further instead of always trying to do so much so fast. Happy trails.

Do you know what the cfs was when you crossed there? I did that crossing about a month ago or so on the ITAYG loop but that was when we were in a drought - so it was relatively low but super slippery. Now thinking of doing the Grand Loop - but didn't want to do that crossing if it's much more than mid-shin or knee deep (especially since I'm doing it in winter).

I don’t know now what it was but I can tell you that it wasn’t the current that ended up being the problem it was the fact that the depth of the water is hard to judge because it’s murky. It was waist deep at the midway point but towards the bank on the other side it got up to my upper chest and I’m 5’9 so winter crossing could be dangerous, be careful and good luck.

Nope, wasn't out there. Planning to start the loop on the 23rd. I was trying to get an idea of the river level so I can compare closer to my start date. Thanks for the quick response 👍
