Too bad there was no RECENT interview of Phillips to see if all these decades later he still claimed he
' didn't know WHY ' he did THESE MURDERS ...
Maybe back then he really didn't know ; but I'm sure after 40 years Allen Phillips had plenty of TIME to THINK about WHY he took the lives of women when , here , HE had HIS OWN DAUGHTER and NEVER would have wanted anyone to TREAT HIS DEAR CHILD the way HE treated OTHERS DAUGHTERS .

The worst offenders are part of our government and/or institutions, "nonprofits", etc., run by our nefarious agencies (or fronts for agencies) which control legislation, law enforcement at all levels, and the judicial system (judges, coroners, district attorneys, medical "experts", etc.), who prevent the overwhelming number of predators from being caught and/or prosecuted and ensure they are placed in key positions even at the highest level. (They also control the labs, the registries, etc., just as they ensure their internet platforms are scrubbed to eliminate evidence from victims, witnesses, whistleblowers, journalists, etc., who have tried to expose it for many decades.

I had a feeling once, was camping out with friends, had a thought to call a coworker, we’re not close friends, my shipmate, but thought “maybe I should ask D to come out and camp”. After that long Memorial Day weekend, D had been found by another coworker, unalived. I wish I had made that call. A simple, “hey, come out and camp with us”. My friend I was camping with worked for suicide hotline. I should have called.

Jeff’s eyes sparkled when he talked about their love. He looked crushed remembering when he found her glove. Ugh my heart aches for him. He even made her a weapon. Even not physically with her, he still tried to save her.
That weapon may be what finally solved the case if Bobby Joe slammed the demon murderer in the face with it, which caused his face to bleed onto the glove and tissue.
He's the kind of husband every woman dreams of. Heartbreaking.

DNA technology solved the case that was a result of her incompetence. You or I could’ve done the same thing with zero training. But yup what a hero 👍🏻

Back in the 80's:
One afternoon when I was 16, my car broke down and it was the very first day of my new job. I started walking, thinking "great, I'm going to be late for my very first day!" and a man stopped and offered to take me the two miles down the road to my workplace. It was the ONLY time in my life I accepted a ride from a stranger. Thankfully, he was an honest person and dropped me off.
I can't imagine hitchhiking multiple times a day - Russian roulette.

I was a sweet 19 yes old Kentucky girl. Little old ladies would pick me up and even stop of a cup of tea at Tea time.
Everyone was was so amazing. I loved listening to their stories, and learning about history.
There was only one time when a Trucker pulled over, and I got that hair raising feeling and took off running. No discussion.
I traveled and lived in Greece for almost 2 years. I came home a completely different person.

Exactly! I don't care if it's a safe town or it was a free love era. Women having to rely on rides from strangers has and always will be a big no no. Psychopaths are everywhere. These women should have been protected. Especially Bobby Jo considering she had Jeff. If I were a man, I would never feel comfortable with my wife having to hitch hike to and from work, it's totally unacceptable. Not his fault that there was a murderer on the loose, but it definitely was neglect on his part-especially if he had a car (which I suspect). I'm sorry, he should have been looking out for her!!!

My heart broke for Jeff Oberholtzer years ago, and it breaks for him again seeing this. How dare those defense attorneys tear his wounds open again by accusing him 4 decades later, just because they didn't have anything better to present. I hope Jeff is able to find peace, especially now that his wife's case is finally closed.
They HAD someone better to present. The real perp but they are leeches, they do that for a living.
The police always says "it's too early to declare a person missing", but also say "the first 48 hours are crucial in an investigation". Go figure....

Alan Phillips has a scar over his eye, right where the rescue worker said his wound was. Bobbie Jo clearly got him good with that hook Jeff made for her. I was surprised no one else mentioned this. The scar is plain as day.

Back in 2005 the police get a tip about the guy but nothing came of it? DNA was definitely around. I wonder why they didn’t follow him and try to get his garbage back then.

The detective is so adorable she is diligent patient caring and then I loved how she got to out handcuffs on him and see him shocked and how she felt so satisfied telling us that. Kudos to her!

I love this detective. She is so genuinely thrilled to having the case sold, constantly smiling and cheering. This dedication,work ethic is astonishing, but I feel that she wanted to help the relatives as well. A good person and soul.
When the other victim who had gotten away alive said that Phillips had declared "I don't know why I do this", that was very telling. That is an active, present tense, indicating that it is something he is in the habit of doing. There are doubtless more victims of his out there who have not received justice.

It seems likely he would have other victims. The fact he was sooo careful about throwing out his trash, even 40 years after these two women's death.... I was like, why would he still be that paranoid? Maybe because he had many victims. Also, to do two in one night is a lot... even after having already served time for sexually assaulting a hitchhiker...so, why not others... :/
Nearly 40 years later and you can tell Jeff still has a deep love for his wife. You can see the pain in his face and hear it in his voice. I’m so glad this case was finally solved and I hope he finally gets to grieve with that weight of being blamed finally off his shoulders.

@@davidallen8828 Maybe they had conflicting work schedules....Who knows what might have prevented Jeff from taking his wife into work on a regular basis? Maybe his car wasn't reliable, or they wanted to save on petrol? It seems strange that he would be happy with her hitching a lift, with him having his own car and all. There must have been a reason 🤷

Closure, whatever that is. I can't put myself in their shoes and I wouldn't want to if I had to choose.
I worked many years with Annette's brother and every day he always told wonderful stories of his memories with her. My mother also went to school with her and she always said how nice and beautiful she was. I'm so happy for the closure both families got. It makes me so sick how the killer was so cold faced knowing how sad that made Annette family for decades!

Plus he had to know his precognition of the other girl being found could be taken out of context as guilt, so a guilty person would never share what they saw. I felt really bad for him.

Poor Jeff is an amazing Husband. He made the hook and Bobby used it to defend herself - which injured Alan's face across his eyes while also took his blood and DNA as strong evidences which lead this case to a final closure.

If it weren't for the smart, responsible, and proactive policewoman, it would never have been solved. She's one in a million.

@@marleneg7794 not to take anything from this investigator but making a blanket statement that women are better investigators is simply ignorant. Their are plenty of difficult to solve cold cases that are solved by men, especially with the advances in DNA technology. I worked my career in law enforcement and I know of many very talented men and women in the profession. It depends on the person and not on race, gender, etc. that determines how talented an investigator may be.
She’s truly awesome. We definitely need more like her out there.
He won’t have stopped at just 2 victims. He just perfected what he was doing. One day I hope the families find out why he did this and that those he has yet to be held accountable for, find answers too. RIP ladies😢
He doesn’t know why he did it, at least that’s what he said when he got caught the first time with the girl who got away. His eyes look so demonic in the court, he is just evil.
I agree. Hard to accept he had one murderous day and 40 years later he is still that cautious and misleading even with his disposable items.
But his method was hitchhiking and that became far less prevalent as time went on.

Jeff is a very lucky man that he didn’t spend many many years in prison as an innocent man. God bless that detective for not jumping to conclusions and forcing a conviction based off of a few pieces of evidence as we’ve seen done so many times.
It's awful to be accused of something you didn't do. People can think of all sorts of reasons to be convinced a person is guilty.

This police officer was amazing, persistent to the end and determined to get justice for these families. What a hero.
The number of young kids who stumble upon dead bodies is just crazy. Can’t imagine how that would affect a young mind.
Something I've noticed are the incidents of ordinary citizens who stumble across human remains while walking their dogs. The same thing happens to hunters in remote wooded areas whether they are hunting with dogs or not.

Bobby Jo’s husband broke my heart. His eyes still light up when he talks about how happy they were. 😢 It’s so sad how much evil there is in the world.. But thank Gof for people like the female sheriff who is absolutely relentless and it’s amazing!! She was definitely out there to solve that case!!

I used to hitch hike a lot at that time, but those of us that survived were very lucky.

The twinkle in Jeff's eyes when he talks about Bobby Jo is so heartwarming.
He seems a gentle and sweet man. His purity and raw emotions just radiate through his eyes and voice. Like you can be super safe with him. I wish him peace
All those years go by, and Alan Philips was clearly worried that someone would eventually get his DNA. He was very careful until he wasn't. Thanks to great teamwork, he was caught, and justice is finally served for the two young women.
That part has me stunned! That would require severe OCD, (possibly grown overly conscious of their 'what ifs'.)
Maybe he suspected they were following him or that the cases were reopened.
Even then... it took 5 weeks just to get the chance to compare his DNA.
That truly makes me wonder how many other victims could be tied to him.
These killers are terrifying because they had no real motive to end someone's life.

They caught him in 2021 I believe, a few years before that in 2018 they used this method to catch Joseph DeAngelo known as the Visilia ransacker and EAR/ONS (Guy who had three different sprees). They traced a close DNA relative and went down the family tree to narrow down suspects, then grabbed a DNA sample from the garbage. So maybe this guy saw that story and was trying to be very careful, because if he never even took his garbage out then that's really being protective of his DNA
Jeff is a gentleman. His soft spoken manner is authentic. His pain still evident.
Love when they finally get caught. Kipple is a hero. What a ridiculous defence. Poor Jeff. I hope he can find peace now. Such a genuinely lovely man. And my heart goes out to both families.

Geneology DNA is very new to law enforcement. Wendy did an amazing job.
@@the5thYearSeniors also, look into the numbers of back logged DNA. There are SO MANY families that will never get answers. Recent killings let alone 30 yr old cold cases.

40 years later. Wow! By then it would be a distant memory in the killer's mind and he would think he'd got away scot-free.
I always feel horrible for the families but this one hit a lot harder when it came to Jeff I hope he somehow can get some sort of peace and some sort of a life back and find love again is at least a friendship
I cried my eyes out when Annettes family thanked Bobbie Jo for fighting back so that they had the opportunity to find the man responsible and have him convicted. That was so sweet. They were, basically, saying “thanks for helping our sister” 🥺💔
The most incredible part of this story is a random passenger on a random plane flying high above seeing a SOS signal and notifying the pilot. That SOS came from a stranded man who had just murdered two people. WoW!

i love that they are catching all these monsters with dna, 30 , 40 years on, just scary that they have been walking amongst society all those years , and sad that the families have suffered for so long , their lives and their loved ones snuffed out , while he got to live his,.sends a message to all those out there that think they got away with these horrific crimes , there is nowhere to hide!

This episode.... definitely one to watch again. Sweet, sweet Jeff... I pray that he found love again. What a beautiful heart he has. He basically found his wife. He had to see her to say goodbye. And the pride in the police officer's face when she got her match. The family members at the end... thanking Bobbie Jo for finding their sister's killer through means that never would've been possible back then. Thank you for sharing this 48 hours.
A recurring theme of many cases like this, is that these men were often convicted of kidnapping, assault, etc against women or children. How they're let out is beyond me. They cannot be rehabilitated. They only escalate. So many of these crimes shouldn't have happened.
He also should’ve been the first person flagged to check out in this small community at this time! I get that he’d assaulted someone 8 years previous but he should’ve been added to a red flag drawer!
AMEN to everything you said!! It’s OUTRAGEOUS that this man only served 6 MONTHS behind bars after being caught and confessing to kidnapping the woman who managed to escape from him!!
A further dilemma is that, once let out, these monsters subsequently tend to act more violent/lethal to try to take out future victims in order to ensure that they cannot report and testify against them.
These types of primal violence impulses & behaviors seem essentially hardwired into people so it’s baffling why justice systems can spectacularly fail to protect the public from almost guaranteed future assaults & homicides(!)

Who knows how many people it had back then. Probably half? I mean, even if you didn't put the two attacks together, maybe have a chat with all the violent criminals. It's probably like 3 or 10 people all together.
That'd be too easy for them. Incompetence was a prerequisite for the position.

@@donna4865 To be honest, I assumed that when I wrote the comment. Before they start talking about his prior convictions, they mention Breckenridge. Then they say that the cop went to the courthouse, the DA, and the archives. They didn't give another location, so I assumed it was in the same county she works for. But looking at the fingerprint sheet and the arrest record she found, they both refer to Park county and Fairplay, which is about 25 miles from Breckenridge. So it could have been a different town. Either way, it's two small towns that are 30 minutes apart. I'm sure every cop in the region heard about it.
Even when the killer got caught red-handed, he still didn't have the guts to confess to his crimes... What a lowly piece of trash. I'm glad he gets to rot away in prison for the remainder of his sad existence. The fact that his daughter showed more emotion than him should already prove what kind of a psychopath he is.

Jeff making that brass clip with a ring on it for his beloved wife for self defense and solve both murders. I'm just glad Bobbi Jo got a good hook swipe on her killer that helped catch the cold blooded monster.

48 Hours has always been an exceptionally good program for highlighting criminal cases and have always had exceptional correspondents to tell us the stories of these cases and how they were solved. I have been a fan since they first began and am enjoying them here on this platform without interruption from a full 15 minutes or more of advertisements you would have to endure on network television 😊

Poor sweet Jeff. A lifetime of this pain is just too much for one soul to bear. I hope he loved again, had children and has had some good days as he lived with this grief. And somewhat suspicion. My heart hurts for Jeff. I hope he's had all the good things in life.
They were so young and just living their lives. Those pictures of them...Wish they could have grown old together. Yes, I hope he had a decent life with all the grief he is still feeling...he's about to cry after all the time that has passed.

I feel so sad for that husband. I’m so glad they solved the crime before the perpetrator was already dead, and Justice was served.
This made me cry, if you have never lived in Ski county or the mountains, you just can’t imagine how safe and free you feel! My mom moved us from Ca to Jackson, Wy about the same time as these murders , so she could raise us in that kind of purity, where it was safe to be a kid and free! This man took that from these people, actually all of us in that time. RIP ladies❤️🙏

This made me cry as well.. I've never lived in the mountains and to me,, of course hitch hiking sounds so risky. I understand It was a much different time, I'm 30 and my childhood and early teens was a much different time before social media.
The last few minutes of this gave me chills. The sherrif has specific murders in mind, that he suspects this man of, but. O evidence. We could have so many serial killers from the 70's- 80's era and not even know it!!
Imagine how many bodies haven't even been found around the country. And thats not including unsolved cases 💔

I love how the families start out describing how these gorgeous young women hitched hiked regularly instead of taking vehicles of their own or having family give them rides with an air like "I oh well what are you going to do? hitchhikers be getting murdered sometimes."

@@cm9317 Also, it can get accelerated once you have a bad enough experience. It's part of PTSD. Intuition can give you a chance. Animals use it, so like them, it's a part of our life experience.

@@heaven7360 That must be why I was able to prepare for what could have been my last day. I had terrible PTSD, at the time, because I had been stalked. I thought it would be the stalker, but it wasn’t. A man with a gun tried to break into my apartment, but I’d put up a steel grate at the only entry point, because of nightmares of what would happen.
