OH MY GOD THIS IS WHY MY STORIES SEEM JUST A LITTLE BIT OFF ALL THE TIME! I establish the passion too late! And I establish the flaw too early! My characters motivation isn't revealed in the right time! THANK YOU
Thanks a lot for posting this. I've wanted to see Michael A.'s breakdown of story beginnings for a LOOOONG time, but don't have Blu Ray yet. Kudos, man.
am I the only one who sees what Mr. Incredible's wife wants as being the wrong thing? "Hey honey, you've been gifted with the powers of a demigod--- you need to sit on your arse riding a desk for a stingy insurance company, instead of living up to your full potential!"
I think it has more to do with she wants a healthy happy family, and while her husband won't live up to his potential, at least they'll have each other. If the MR is in jail that goes against what she wants.
Strat Man It was legal once to own a black man. In many places it's a crime to teach a woman to read. Legal and illegal are NOT the same thing as Right and Wrong.
Devin Hansen Yes, but what she WANTS-- or thinks she wants, name a woman who really knows or will ever say--- isn't what she's CREATING. Her family ISN'T happy, and it ISN'T healthy. Her son's acting out, her daughter's a recluse with no self-esteem, and her husband is a fat miserable lump. All traced back to them having to give up and/or hide what they are. She's happy as a clam, of course, and her only problem, so far as SHE thinks, is that everybody else isn't playing along with her "one big happy" formula.
It is about more than following a formula. It's about using the formula as a guideline to make the most of your story. If you treat it as painting by numbers (put this here, put that there, done!), you will have a lousy story. But if you use it as a tool to help generate strong emotional moments and feelings in the reader/audience, then your story can work to the best of its ability. Every story is different, so every story will require different use of the various storytelling tools, but a skeletal guideline like this is a good reference for getting thoughts and ideas organized. It is not a be-all-end-all magic formula. The writer still has to do the work of getting the emotional beats to work.

Nicely done. Would love to see you tackle Act 2 in the same manner.
I feel like I just discovered gold! Love Pixar.
THE BEST video on, this particular part of, the craft online. EVER! Thank you.
This is gold. Pure gold.
I inadvertently do this when I write my own stories.
Now I have an understanding as to why things work.
To say that this was helpful is a huge understatement.
Saw Michael deliver this in person at the Toronto Screenwriting Conference. It was awesome. Thanks for sharing!
extremely well told... structure post-graduate in screenplay in a few minutes...

Thanks for the video. Always helps to see the ideas with concrete examples.

Even if that's illegal?!
Remember superheroes were banned, they are no longer allowed to intervene with their powers.

Are you really comparing using a superpower and slavery?! Even so, its a hard argument to make that not utilizing your potential is immoral.
Who is narrating?
Interesting stuff. But I just can't help feeling that script-writing should be about more than following a formula.
