It is a devastatingly beautiful and haunting country. I first visited in 1993 and I've been going back ever since. Part of me belongs there.

This band; and this song in particular, helped me through a rough part of my life. It's weird listening to it now. It gives me a weird nostalgic feeling for wandering around drunk and sad in the middle of winter, laying in the snow and staring at the stars with this blasting in my headphones.
Not a lot of bands successfully take me back to moments of my life. I love it.

I have made it a rule never to share my interpretations of a song or video with anyone because it would then become their interpretation....and all are different at different times.
This song and video is so important to me I want to break my rule.
I don't speak Icelandic nor do I want to explain how I feel when I hear the song without the video.
The video, for me, is of a woman who lost someone close to her (presumably from death but if you have ever been in a long term relationship that ended suddenly...then that can feel like the death of that being as well). She must let go. She cant because she stops herself by dragging his memory with her for as long as she can.
Ultimately, a stronger and darker part of herself (the earth witch) gives her that ability to let go.
As she lets go she is free to move on as dragging on the memory had almost killed her.
Their is so much wisdom here I wanted to share and see if anyone can add something deeper.
Don't let a loss be the loss of you. Be grateful for the happiness. No pleasure comes without pain.
May I take my own advice.
That's the beauty of art, there is no single interpretation all of the time. Thanks for sharing yours, it's beautiful. To me, this song quite simply represents the natural will to live, and some struggle against death which is unavoidable in the end. I know it sounds simple, but given my own close brush with death, this helps to silence my own fears. Its why I love this band so much, they create feelings I never thought possible

I flew to Portland, OR from Texas in 2018 just to see Solstafir. They opened for Paradise Lost which was epic, but I was mainly there for Solstafir. Such an amazing show. The vocal "ahhs" were sung by the bass player and holy shit, he stole the show.
This seems like a good place to put my story. I flew to Portland (from PA with a connection in TX) to see Agalloch many years ago with my best friend (same year AT&T stadium opened because we used that connection as an excuse to see a Cowboys game. The Mantle is one of if not my favorite album so it was well worth the trip.
Few years later, Agalloch was playing Maryland Death Fest and the same friend asked me to go. I’m not super into death metal but Agalloch so yes, I’m going.
The ONLY other thing I remember from that show is Solstafir playing this song. The whole drive home I’m reminding myself ‘solstafir, solstafir, solstafir’ because I had to look it up and figure out what the hell this song was.

The coffin represents his own body (his thoughts, her flesh), dragging him heavily. She wisely avoids earthly illusions and continues his march to an uncertain fate. The spirits are always around her: some of them are silent companions (those marked with the symbol Hulinhjálmur), they cannot help but they are always by her side; the demon (marked with the Ægishjalmur symbol on his forehead) use the blood to reveal the truth (the mechanism of the unseen) through visions, sealing his revelation with silence. She reaches the waterfall... and the interpretation of what there happens depends on the vision of each one.
He is a Mara, bringer of bad dreams, feeding on her sorrow. Also the beech where she starts, is where the waterfall that she dumps the coffin down empties to. Maybe there is 'cycle of repetition' here, or maybe we are all just overthinking the lyrics as Icelandic is an old, but precise, verbose tongue, and is sometimes difficult to translate to English without some loss tho the poetry.

I always thought it was some sort of spiritual awakening kind of thing. she was carrying that burden all alone but kept going even when it was super hard and was finally able to let go and ascend. It's usually the ones with the most karma who have the toughest paths but biggest rewards once they evolve.(the demon was sort of like her ego telling her to give up and the spirit by her side was like the higher self/soul observing and granting strength and hope to keep going) but yea that's just my interpration .

I'm torn between two things... I really, really want to visit Iceland, as I'm feeling really tempted by it - my soul lives really close to nature, to cold landscapes of blowing wind, rocky mountains that I can climb and admire, dense forests smelling of moss and dew, vast plains that invite you to try reach the horizon... But I somehow can't get rid of feeling that I don't belong there. That I, being Polish Slav, don't belong in the land of nordic people, where their gods walked among them. Really silly, I know, but I'd feel like an intruder. I fear that people would think like 'yeah, you can admire, but you don't understand it like we do'... Still, visiting Iceland is my dream. To sit in the wild, read a book, or just look in the sky and fly away. One day I will overcome my doubts and visit you, friends :)
