I really like the Saw movies, not because of the grousome traps, but because of the story and the reason the villain does what he does. Because of that, the gore doesn't feel pointless.
nah, saw (even the first one) is cheap and stupid... makes hostel look like a cinematic masterpiece eventhough that description seems utterly wrong for any eli roth movie
Um... what? The story and the reason the "villain" (a cold-blood murderer, actually) does what he does are part of the reason why the _Saw_ movies are some of the most insulting horror films ever made. Jigsaw is a cowardly, lying, sadist sociopath who blames his cancer on completely random people and tortures them for something they are not responsible for.
@@fluorescentmilkshake that could be why, but in his twisted mind, he wants them to survie like he did and gain the clarity he felt. Yes, he's a psycho and a sadist, but he doesn't see it like that. I like him as a villain, and Tobin Bell NAILS IT as John Kramer.
@@kevinfog I. Don't. Give. A. Good. Damn of Britney Spears what a Flippin' MURDERER thinks... He is a pathetic, SELFISH, hypocritical, COWARDLY, dirty hole in the pooter. He took the life away from others, kidnapped them... Etc. He has LONG since given up the right to ask people pontificate on what he thinks. What the helen keller about his victims? What about the fact that he never actually targeted people in Corporate America? He never targeted a truly rich person making money off the suffering of others. He never took out his rage on the health care system or lobbyists or corrupt politicians, etc. He went after people with no power to change anything. So, he's an idiot. He can go stick his face in an industrial-sized trouser press.
Terrifier - Low budget. Lots and lots of gore. It’s so over the top it stops being scary and becomes camp. It’s all practical effects, which is admirable. Hostel - This one does not belong on this list. It gets such a bad rap that it doesn’t deserve. There is gore, but most people don’t see the humor and the sharp social commentary. The first two also have fantastic revenge. It makes you really hate them and then they get theirs. Saw- The first two have two of the best twists I have ever seen. Well worth watching. Human Centipede - Complete tripe. Absolute garbage. It started because a guy joked that child killers should have their mouths sewn to a truckers butthole. Skip it. They are not even good films in any way. Martyrs - Belongs here. Not much redeeming. A Serbian Film - Just trash. Nothing good about it. Not well made. Cannibal Holocaust - Never watch it. There is actual animal cruelty in it. Hills Have Eyes - I’ve never liked them. The sequel to the original has a dog that has a flashback. The cannibalism is mostly implied tho. Meh. Green Inferno - Gory. Just okay. Social commentary is okay. Found footage. That’s a personal preference. I love it.
The first Human Centipede is pretty good, there's some themes/messages, but the other two are kinda dumb (though the third one has a tiny bit of social commentary on the prison system if you squint hard enough)
@@KristofskiKabuki I saw the first one this week, never heard of this film before. I like horror films, but this one was violent for the sake of it, did we really need to see all the gore. Apart from that it was actually a pointless and boring film, terrible acting no story or plot. I don't even know why I continued watching it. Like a snuff film
I absolutely respect you for making this video! I love horror, and I've watched all of the films that you talked about, but even I agree with the things you said about them. Films like the Terrifier series don't bother me, nor does Paranormal Activity, Martyrs, The Green Inferno, and the Saw series for the most part. However, I watched A Serbian Film, and it stayed with me in my mind for days. It felt like no matter how many showers I took, I would never be clean again. The same goes for the first two Human Centipede films. I hate to even call them movies. Anyway, great respect to you for this. What works for some when it comes to horror doesn't necessarily work for the next person.
Cannibal Holocaust is the one film I really wish I had never seen. The live animals being cruelly killed has stayed with me. I wish I could go back in time and not watch it. Hills Have Eyes, particularly the remake, whilst quite uncomfortable viewing at times, is a stroll in the park by comparison.
Yep I had no problem with Martyrs, Terrifier, Human Centipede but Cannibal Holocaust is a hard no for me because of the animal abuse. Also A Serbian film. child sex abuse is a big no for me.
I’ve also heard of that happening in that film which I refuse to watch . I just watched terrifier 3 and whilst I admit to having to cover my eyes twice, I was pleasantly surprised by how entertaining it was.
Videodrome tried to warn us back in the 80s. People try to be nonchalant and casual about these types of movies. These types of films deeply affect the soul in a very destructive way. I used to do these kinds of effects back in the 80s and I still can't look at it. The level and detail of the violence is just overwhelming.
As a horror fan it's important we have our boundaries, and our boundaries don't make us any lesser as a horror fan. For me personally I don't watch exploitation (Serbian, sodom, august underground etc) I won't watch r*** revenge or any type of SA, and I won't watch anything with animal cruelty. Also I watched the first terrifier and have no interest in seeing the others 😂😅 but I respect the director and his success story. I love how the third film was more successful at the box office than the blockbuster films with massive budgets
The Human Centipede series and a Serbian film on my NO list. Not for the gore, I can deal with gore. They have things in them that make me ill. I agree with you on paranormal activity and found film footage films in general. I've only found one I enjoyed, and it's not a horror. You mentioning people thinking Cannibal Holocaust was real reminds me of the first two Guinea Pig films. Some people thought thought they were real. J Horror can get graphic. Other films on my No list. August Underground, Silo, that i can think of from the top of my head.
The entertainment industry always tries to one up itself and as long as there is a paying audience then there's literally no extent they won't go to. I, personally, prefer atmosphere over shock value. Mood and style over gore and depravity. There are some things that you can never un-see so I agree with you there. In the late 80's early 90's there were a series of films called "Faces Of Death" which were a collection of clips of ACTUAL deaths of real people and animals caught on camera. I'm not proud of having watched them now.
If it is any consolation to you, Faces Of Death has been proven to be mostly/all staged and pre-filmed footage. It's a movie and not real deaths happening on screen. It was just a marketing gag to say it was "real death," which is honestly really sick.
I call a lot of these films 'Splatter movies' as they arent scary its just all about blood/gore and body mutilation as its form of Horror. To me a Horror film is more where i am going to bed worrying about what i saw, this doesnt occur for me with splatter films but does with ghost or paranormal themed movies.
I’m with you 100%. I love scary movies, even horrifying movies, but I can’t stand watching people getting tortured. It just seems wrong to me. “Martyrs” is said to have lots of artistic merit, so I’m kinda sad to miss out on it, but I just can’t do it. I also agree “paranormal activity” is a total bore.
I recently gave up on ever wanting to see Terrifier after it's been shoved in my face for the past few months, it's annoying, I'm tired of seeing that damn clown.
I never even watched the movie and I had a nightmare that I was in the middle of a small hallway and he was staring at me. I froze up and covered my eyes and then he stabbed me several times in the stomach (which is probably really tame compared to what actually happens in the movies) then in the dream after I died I woke up in bed like a minecraft character
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a disturbing low budget classic! They made two documentaries about this movie! They feature interviews with the cast and behind the scenes stories of how this movie was made! A good psychological thriller is Session 8!
I am really interested in the original Texas chainsaw massacre - I haven’t got around to it but I have a copy, and I think the doc is kicking around prime some where 👍
I'm not one for gore or body horror either. I already have a hard time with some thrillers or more subtle/atmospheric movies since my mind goes into overdrive filling the gaps and imagining things. So I haven't watched any of the movies listed, or many others that are considered classics of the genre. That said, I am very curious, so I end up reading the plot of whichever movie online, and that tends to be enough for life (as well as true crime cases). Or I watch someone reacting to one of these movies (typically Zzavid, just because of his commentary and humor), because the edition for YT just waters things down a lot, so it isn't as intense 😅
ZZAVID is so funny. I hope he reviews The Substance. That movie was awesome. Tho it did get really gross. I'm not scared of needles but damn it has GIANT NEEDLES like wtf
Same! If there’s a particularly gory film, i just read the plot on Wiki or watch an analysis on YT if I’m more curious. Thank you for suggesting a new account, I’ll check Zzavid out!
That talk about Human Centipede and A Serbian Film reminded me of a movie I did regret watching, and that was Men Behind The Sun. Which is a movie from Hong Kong released in 1988 which tells and depicts the atrocities commited in Camp 731 by Imperial Japanese forces in World War 2. It was absolutely brutal and I couldn't sit through the whole movie, in fact, it lived rent free in my head for a few weeks. Even now, I still haven't sat through the whole thing and I don't think I'll ever will, maybe I'm just too squeamish and empathetic to stomach brutal scenes that feel so grounded in reality, who knows.
While I haven't even heard of "Men Behind the Sun," I can understand why it was hard to watch for you. Between being so empathetic, myself, and the knowledge that it's based on actual atrocities, I will definitely give that one a hard pass.
@@Artretha Yeah, it definitely isn't a movie I'd recommend watching as I had a miserable time with it myself and I couldn't even finish it, the violence and the degree of realism put into it was just too much for me, I've basically put it down midway through.
Thank you! Nobody ever mentions this movie when they talk about "Traumatizing," or "Disturbing," movies. This movie actually made me sick. I still think about that movie, as well. I've seen A Serbian Film, Salo, etc. but nothing sticks with me like Men Behind the Sun. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that, while undoubtedly dramatized to a point, it is true.
i agree with your video so much and you're also funny!! i will be back it's so hard to get into horror that isn't just torture corn/gore i prefer thrillers and psychological horror more
I can sit through a lot of human misery, but if one animal is involved in anyway, the film immediately gets turned off. I can’t stand any type of cruelty to animals. People will always try to destroy each other, they just need to leave the animals be. 🙏🏻💙
To me Terrifier is still more of a comedy. DHT is such a good actor, he shows it the most in 2, he makes it so everytime art is on screen u know u might laugh
The Hills Have Eyes (1977) is more so about suggestion than it is actually showing the violence, though there is on-screen violence in the film, and it is disturbing, it's not as exploitative as you may think it is, the remake, on the other hand, is very violent. The only film that I agree a human being is probably just fine having never seen is A Serbian Film. I, unfortunately have seen A Serbian Film, and I can honestly say I'll never watch it again. I enjoy disturbing cinema to a degree (Martyrs is brilliant), but the themes and even just some of the things happening on and off screen are too much and just shouldn't be consumed. There really is nothing to gain from watching that film, other than some really unfortunate memories of things that happen in it.
A Serbian Film. Banned in Australia, can't have that, I'm an adult, I'll decide what I watch. Watched it once, it's banned for a reason. Also watched The Green Inferno. I usually watch films for enjoyment and escapism. These two were not enjoyable.
Hi. I watched The I Spit On Your Grave remake and it was really graphic and uncomfortable but well done. I leant it to a friend and she was really shocked, she never forgave me lol..
Martyrs is a very intense watch, so I usually don't recommend it. But I love it because the meaning I gathered from it by the end gave me a new appreciation for life at a dark time in my life... I think I'm the only person in the world who interpreted it in a positive way lol. I can tell you right now: DON'T bother with A Serbian Film. Two hours of my life I will never get back, I can't STAND that movie! Just edgy to be edgy, truly a movie designed just to torment the viewer. One movie I'll probably never watch is Irreversible. I've managed to see a lot of stuff I swore I would never see, but that one is probably not for me and I'm okay with that!
Definitely some solid points here. I made it through the Terrifiers and totally get why many can’t. It’s getting to be a bit much. I’ve watched the saw movies up until part 3, had enough of those. Went on a lil foreign kick for awhile so I’ve seen Martyrs, not something I ever want to see again. Can add another to that foreign list…Inside, absolutely never watching again. Just reading the parental advisory for A Serbian Film had me traumatized for days so that was enough lol. I’ve never seen any of the Human Centipedes and I don’t plan to. Seen the Hostels and I won’t watch them again. I’ve always felt like they’re documentaries rather than make believe. Where do all the missing people go, ya know? No thanks lol.
I found terrifier really tame compared to my expectations- my friend who is INCREDIBLY squeamish was fine too. I think its blown out of proportion because the gore looks suppperrr fake and its just really campy overall
Horror movies are like Hot foods and Pornography. The more you expose yourself too, the more open you are to more. Now lots of Blood Hounds like myself were lucky to have started young, but challenged in a sense that it takes a bit of well crafted, hard core horror to scratch that itch till it leaves a memorable scar. I would suggest that if you are somewhat new to horror, don't ruin it for yourself, take your time and allow you're tolerance level to swell to the point that you never say never when it comes to the good stuff.
Great Video! As someone who has seen everything, with the exception of the bottom of the "disturbing movies iceberg," I absolutely don't blame you for not wanting to see these movies. After some self-reflection, I've become somewhat desensitized to gore, and I really don't think that it is a GOOD thing. It's almost dehumanizing. I absolutely have fallen for the "intrigue" of these films and I look at these films as "personal challenges". Whenever I hear that a movie is difficult to stomach, despite how much I don't want to see these things, I feel like I have to. A small detail I wanted to point out what you said about the first Saw film being mainly about two men in a room - this isn't TOTALLY true. There ARE scenes outside of the room that, while there are only glimpses, are pretty gross. I just wanted to throw that warning out to you in case you ever decide to give it a shot. I do feel that sometimes getting through the gore leads to a reward at the end and that reward is a solid story and payoff, that is thought-provoking. Martyrs and Saw, in my opinion, are good films, as a whole, and DO offer this payoff at the end. Martyrs has one of the best endings I've ever seen and it has left me with something that I still think about today... in a good way lol
Terrifier has a way different vibe than the other movies you compare it against (in the thumbnail at least). The terrifiers are modern day evil deads. 3 is hilarious.
I'm just too sensitive to body horror, and the total sadism that comes across in most of these films. I could handle Saw, but that's about it. One of these films I couldn't even watch your reaction to, had to skip over it, can't even say the name, I feel almost superstitious about it like just thinking about it will stop me sleeping tonight!
I just finished this video and I've seen all these movies myself except _A Serbian Film, The Human Centipede,_ and *some* of _Cannibal Holocaust._ I would not have recommended any of those films to most horror fans... *Except* I want to absolutely alleviate your concerns over 1977's _The Hills Have Eyes._ It's not what you're thinking. Not at all. Almost all the violence is extremely tame. The one or two extremely short bits that are explicit do not involve cooking humans, eating humans, or torture or cruelty to babies or animals, etc. The cannibalism is only hinted at. Now that someone's lead you down the wrong path about that movie (just the 1977 original version that is), I have to actually recommend it. It's nothing like those other movies on your list. It's a real classic and one of the few Survival Horror films that is actually great. You have my word. You really should give it a try.
I agree with a lot of what is said . Paranormal activity is really boring but there are two found footage films i love and that is Blair witch project and Gonjiam :haunted Asylum.
I watched the descent and that one is pretty brutal, but it isn't just gore for no reason and has like an interesting plot where Terrifier doesn't, the main reason people watch it is for the gore they can't find really anywhere else.
I’ve had many many boxing fights and as you can imagine seen my fair share of bloody orrible things. Not ashamed to admit it that when I watched terrifier 1 I had to leave the room for a min and have a glass of water cos I genuinely felt nauseous. I braved the rest of the trilogy and had to watch through my fingers on a few occasions 😂😂😂 but I was pleasantly surprised by how entertained I was. Art is genuinely a great character and the plot is semi engaging. If you have friends that are interested it makes it easier aswell and the reactions can be hilarious. Of course tho I wouldn’t watch it if you have any doubts. Great vid I subscribed
I find all paranormal/ghost/ demon movies to just be borriiiinnnnnggggggg. Also, Terrrifier was just... terrible, lol. It wasn't even the violence, it was just BAD.
Most found footage movies are crap, and I hate them. I especially hate The Blair Witch Project because it was hyped up to be sO sCaRy, only for it to be a whole lot of nothing. I was looking forward to seeing it, so I was sorely disappointed when I did get to see it. I also hate the torture porn type of movies, too, because they're full of pointless gore for mere shock value, rather than adding anything to the plot. If I'm going to watch a movie like that, give me something more substantial than just gore for the sake of shock value. I saw the original "The Hills Have Eyes," and it's really not that bad. The cannibalism is somewhat implied, much like it is in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Terrifier 1 is a showcase for Art. Yes it does lack story. Terrifier 2+3 has really good story. What balances the Terrifier movies is the dark humour. I do however say that Terrifier is a horror movie made for horror movie fans and horror movies arent made for everybody. I will however add that hollywood horrors have lost the plot. It is a gateway for people to say they watched a horror movie but in reality there is just alot of acting with very little horror. Finally i love horror movies but it should be outlandish, over the top and outside the realm of reality. Horrors set in the realm of reality i cant handle. Hostel, Serbian Film and Human Centipede is to much because it is to real. Thats the only reason i can watch Terrifier movies is because it isn't in the realm of reality. No judgement for anybody who doesnt want to watch certain horror movies if they cant handle it. Not everything is made for everybody and this includes everything in life. I hate tomatoes and thats my final stance😂
About the hills have eyes!! I have watched the first and second remake thanks my my dad -_- And they don’t have cannibalism in them from what I remember but there is some gore and also a lot of sexual assault like A LOT. An overwhelming amount honestly.
Just to say, the line the directors and Art’s actor for the Terrifier franchise that will never be crossed is on-screen child death, and S/A, Art canonically would never assault someone in such a way, as it is beneath him. I may have also misunderstood this, but I believe that either the director or actor has stated that Art is an asexual creature. Just wanted to spread this information as much as possible!
I really like the saw series but it did take a dip from The Final Chapter (what a letdown!). Jigsaw was ok but the secret apprentice twist at the end really put me off (and he’s never been mentioned since) Saw X however was great!!
I'm glad you actually watched Bone Tomahawk. A handlful of graphic scenes to be sure. One of my favorites. Stellar acting and script. Top notch pruction. Fantastic story. A film that would likely make your don't watch list is the Russian film, Hard to be a God.
As much as I love gore and violent movies, I don't think I'll ever watch any of the Terrifier movies. They honestly just seem so dry and boring and like there is no real plot besides the gore. They seem like such a slog to get through.
nahhh terrifier SLAPS.. id say theres very little slow parts, especially when art is on screen bc its HILARIOUS 😭 they somehow manage to make a character that doesnt speak-way more animated & funny than usual ive seen terrifier one, & im halfway through the second one. terrifier 1 seems like it primarily exists to show what art is capable of, but 2 is filled with a lot of story & in depth characters
I've never been into horror films, and I thought Terrifier 2 would be too gory for me too but something about it intrigued me so I watched it last week, and tbh I don't know what the fuss is about - all the gore is so obviously fake that it just becomes extremely silly and funny. Also the whole thing is aesthetically gorgeous (despite the aggressive colour grading), and the way it manages to both be extremely silly and take itself entirely seriously honestly made me fall in love with it. I actually found the gore in Midsommar to be way more intense and unsettling, and the film as a whole disturbed me a lot more
You should NEVER refuse to watch a film if you are a Cinephile ...or Almost what ever that means. You also don't sound very interesting or fun to be around.
I absolutely agree with you avoiding those movies that are bad taste as i am huge horror movie fan i was bothered by the Kind of torture type movies made but i watched some of the ones you showed such as the french movie Martyrs but sorry I did and the Human Centipede disgracful also but Eli Roth's Hostel is nasty stuff just like his latest movie Thanksgiving That i never want to see again, thou there is a movie i saw once in the theatre called Untraceable thats very disturbing Like the Saw movies that left me head wrecked for some time after seeing it.
The Hills Have Eyes is pretty safe to watch in regards to the whole cannibal aspect - it's nothing like Cannibal Holocaust if that's what your worrying about? Both the original Hills and it's remake are EXCELLENT horror movies which I think you're imagining are worse than they actually are. Give them a watch - you can always turn off if they're not for you. You're not missing much with Green Inferno - it's pretty piss poor. The Hostel movies aren't as extreme as you may think, the second is the best of the franchise.
i’ve actually seen quite a few of the films on this list and i have to say, the first human centipede movie is actually better than i expected it to be. to say i enjoyed it isn’t necessarily true, but it was overall solid and surprising in that regard. the second and third films were, however, absolute garbage and not worth watching at all. i want the time i spent back. 😭
that being said, i do agree with you on some of these - a serbian film is absolutely reprehensible and disgusting. that director should be investigated.
Hiya , im with you on alot of the films you talked about , ive seen the human centipeed 2 defo one of the most disturbing films ive ever seen , worse than the 1st The 1st saw film is tamer than the rest of them The rest are a no no from me lol ❤❤
I am currently in the midst of a saw hyperfixation, mostly because i'm no longer bugged by the gore in that franchise. I still hate almost all slasher films tho :,]
if you can watch one it’s super good and honestly the only one i genuinely recommend, the rest get ify but i personally like them because the plots get ridiculous and the gore doesn’t bother me too much anymore. other slashers definitely bother me tho
Paranormal activity put me to sleep. This thing was extremely overhyped when it came out as the scariest thing ever and I was bored to the point of sleeping. Terrifier is weird thing for me as I find it funny in very twisted way. Like, the things he is doing in these movies are disturbing, but the gore of the movie is very... let us just say that is way too over the top and far cry from realistic that is hard for me to take it seriously. It's just bloody looking for the sake of it, but the gore isn't (nor it tries to be) very realistic for me to have a reaction to it. I would say that the acts itself are what is hard watch, but gore gets to cartoony levels, which counters the extremely brutal scenes that you are watching. If Terrifier is just a gory movie for the sake of it, then The Human Centipide is just disgusting for the sake of it. That's it. There is no actual plot or anything to take from it. It's just gross. At least with Terrifier there is some twisted comedy involved and gore looks funny, can't find anything truly entertaining here. As a Serbian I can only apologize for A Serbian Film to those that have seen it, but at the same time... I've seen way more disturbing movies from my dear homeland, that had similar themes going on. The difference is that these usually were driven from war and cruelty of it, rather than going for pure shock and disgust that this movie did? On one hand I can understand the thing this movie was going for, but at the same time it was done in an extremely poor taste that results in this movie just being this way for the shock of it. It's like 120 Days of Sodom in that regard. So, yea. You aren't losing much by not watching it.
Lol, paranormal activity is my favorite franchise... I also won't watch terrifier or human centipede, but I did watch hostile out of curiosity, and that's probably as far as I can go. The other movie that's similar is a no is Tusk. Instead, I just watch youtube videos about ending explained and find out what happened without having to see it.
Thank you for this video, i actually did need a what NOT to watch list and my limits are very similar to yours. Can’t watch excessive gore & violence, however i do like a little edge to films.
I’ve watched all but Cannibal Holocaust due to real animal cruelty. In A Serbian Film, the scene people hype as the “worst” is disturbing more for the implication than what’s shown. I found other scenes more visually shocking, though I’d never watch it again. I love the Terrifier movies; the gore is so over-the-top it’s campy, and Art’s expressions add humor-plus, the actor is a sweetheart. Paranormal Activity is the most boring horror movie I’ve ever seen.
I’m happy to leave art the clown to those who can appreciate him 😄 for me I feel like it would be way to far - lots of people have said the same about paranormal activity so I’m glad I haven’t missed out much!
thank you for your candor and for posting this, which i am sure has earned you some pushback from some of the horror community. while i love horror cinema in almost all its forms, i also have a difficult time with extended suffering on screen (e.g. Martyrs). i can handle all the beheadings and dismemberment Hollywood wants to throw at me, but make someone suffer for more than 15-30 seconds and i stop being entertained and go to sheer discomfort. that being said, i noticed that you are prominently displaying the book A Little Life behind you. to me, that book featured more suffering and violence (physical and emotional) than any of the movies you mentioned. i know it could be excused as psychological, and that it's a book not a movie, but i was wondering how you were able to handle that book! I'm not trying to be confrontational or anything, but almost all the things you talk about being a hard no in this video are absolute walks in the park in comparison to reading A Little Life, particularly when it comes to violence for the sake of violence.
Yes I agree,, I have seen some clips of Martyrs and its really disturbing film.i prob wont watch it.Bram stokers dracula the first alien films and Halloween 1978 are good films.. And predator. Cool video.🙂❤
One of my favorite actors is in the second terrifier film and i watch most of everything he's in but i will still refuse to watch the terrifier series, it just don't sit with me i don't really like too much gore but can sit through the entirety of the final destination series 😅
Just stumbled upon your channel and for the most part, you and I are on the same page for films I will never watch. I have seen all the Saw films and honestly, the first movie is very much a police procedural film as opposed to the gorefests of the sequels. If you were going to give anything on this list a try, the first Saw might surprise you (I would not seek out the sequels however given what you have stated are your hard passes). I watched the original Hills Have Eyes last summer for the first time because I was doing a watch of Wes Craven's filmography. I honestly thought it was going to be hard to get through. It was not as harrowing as I thought it would be but from what I understand, the remake (which I have not seen) is a lot more brutal so if you were going to check out a version, probably go with the original as it really isn't as gory as I expected it to be. Concerning PA, you are missing nothing. I had to rewatch the first one for a ranking list and I thought "Maybe it's better than I remember it being." Nope. Absolute slog of a film. Do not waste your time. I may eventually give Hostel a watch. I've had friends who know my tastes (I'm not a fan of gore either or mean spirited films), and they have said that Hostel is a lot tamer than advertised and I trust them not to steer me wrong. Martyrs may also eventually get a watch from me with a lot of averting my eyes from the screen as the story sounds interesting but it's gonna be a film that unless it gets assigned as homework for something Everything else on your list is a hard pass for me as well. I know my temperament. Terrifier and A Serbian Film would haunt me in a bad way. Could probably make it through Cannibal Holocaust and Green Inferno, but I have no desire to and the animal cruelty would make me sick. And Human Centipede already gets under my skin just with the premise and I don't really feel like watching a movie that will make me puke. Some additional films that are on my personal never list are The August Underground movies, Compliance, The Girl Next Door, and Street Trash. Hope you have a great day!
My girlfriend doesn't like the Saw movies but she didn't think the gore in Spiral was too bad so maybe you should give that a go and see if you can work out the twist, I couldn't work out the twist but everybody else has said it's really easy to figure out. I'm also curious, if you don't like Cannibal films, does that mean you don't like the Hannibal films, because they're classic films?
Does the dog die site is a good place to look up triggers before you watch a movie. They have triggers I didn't even know were triggers. I can't watch animal cruelty or torture for the sake of torture. I have seen some of the films on this list, and wanted to bleach my eyeballs after a few, lol! Paranormal Activity was boring. I like the Saw series because it has a point to it, and Tobin Bell is amazing. I wish I had never seen The Human Centipede, a bit queasy just thinking about it. I won't watch Hostel or Martyrs because of the torture. Since I like Eli Roth, I saw The Green Inferno and liked it. Roth has a way of injecting twisted humor in his movies. Good ending, too. People have such varied tastes. Even within a movie, you can find that thing you don't like was ok because the overall movie was enjoyable. If it's on physical media, you can skip the icky part. I do, anyway. I just can't stomach animals being hurt, though, and won't buy those dvds. Vivian
They did coin the term for some of these: "torture porn". What they really mean is the filmmakers are torturing the audience...a well made horror movie is like good comedy... You're in on the joke, you're a part of it, and they are saying : "ok, you're safe, you can watch this with the reassurance that we'll get you through it, we've got you" these feel like the director hates you as an audience member, or is genuinely deranged, and we are witnessing their derangement. Bone tomahawk was a great Western horror right up until that scene, and even jaded old me couldn't get that out of my head for a couple of days. ... Save with human centipede, that is basically depraved, and almost as unforgivable... It is not a good movie - no story, or any redeeming features.
I'd say it's more the derangement of humanity, as atrocities have been committed by mankind since recorded history. Horror is just the most honest genre in terms of violence and depravity, showing it, making people uncomfortable. Are the films you mentioned really anymore disturbing then watching your local nightly news and hearing about the terrible, actually real things happening around and close to you? I think Human Centipede is a gross film but I've seen all 3 and I think there's way worse real bad things than the simulated depravity of what's in those. There's always been a spectrum of horror that challenges most people more than most, their limits. There'll always be "safe" horror that's for the masses and that's fine, but the world is full of different types and different filmmakers, so you get different creators putting out different types of content...it'd be boring if everything was the same or noone ever pushed into new directions or territory.
Yeh that scene in bone tomahawk is still living in my head rent free - and now I know, that I can comfortably say I don’t need to see something like that again 😅
Bone Tomahawk is exactly why I google any movies I'm unsure of bc I went into Bone Tomahawk thinking it was supernatural and now I'm scarred for life. I can't do real life horror. I don't mind Evil Dead or Terrifier even if they're really gorey bc if the supernatural element and then they're so overtop with the kills.
I'm not a fan of gore and body horror in movies but I can tolerate it and appreciate the creativity, personally my solid no is any film with sexual violence and exploitation, A Serbian Film is also a solid no for me and I have a hardcore tolerance, I don't want to put myself through that especially if it involves minors or animals fuck that
I'd saw if you were to watch a Saw film it should be there first as I think the violence in it is pretty tame compared to the sequels where they try to ramp it up. Between the two I'd say the original Saw is less violent than Hostel. Than again I love gorey films so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Totally agree with you on A Serbian Film though, that one seems far too upsetting to me as well. Movies are supposed to be entertaining, so there's no use subjecting yourself to something you know you won't enjoy.
I can agree with most of these. I don't watch human on human horror movies. I'm just not that interested in them and they are too real. Usually have rape and torture scenes which I'm not in to. I like paranormal, Haunted house, possession, creature feature type movies. The only one I like from your list is Paranormal Activity. I love that theme and I like found footage.
You seem to be equating found footage with slice of life; most found footage films have solid stories, and Paranormal Activity is no exception. Its just not filmed using traditional Hollywood cinematography, its shot like a home video to make it feel more "real" and therefore scarier. As to gore films vs psychological horror, the fact that you can watch Hereditary astounds me; that one, and others like it are my hard nopes. On the flipside, I love the campy horror comedy of something like Terrifier, not to mention one of the best final girls in decades, Sienna motherfreaking Shaw. And I'm curious, if you don't like cannibalism, are you not able to watch any Hannibal Lecter stuff? I love the TV show, but I've never seen Cannibal Holocaust, because of the real animal cruelty, so that is also one of my nopes.
Hills have eyes really isn't that graphic. They were limited by budget and gore effects tech of the era and I really don't remember anything that bad at all. Don't remember any cannibalism, at least not on screen, it's nowhere near the level of explicit gore in most of the others you mentioned. Talking about the 70s original, the remake I think is more graphic. I think maybe give Hostel a chance at some point too. I noticed you own Bone Collector which has some grisly scenes, and the gore in Hostel 1+2 at times is a bit more than that but I really don't think it's that bad. The strength of the Hostel films is how realistic the scenarios are because rural Eastern Europe can seem quite creepy and unsafe to us Westerners.
saw has a great story to it i enjoy them . paranormal activity isn't really a found footage film or just two hours of cam footage saying that it wasn't any good
Hello I'm Chris I love horror movies I'm autistic but I'm a huge horror guy I don't like surbian film cannibal holicost but I love killer dolls my favorite is m3gan it's my favorite she's adorable and I have a m3gan doll it's not a gory movie it's pg 13 it's worth a watch for sure
When I was younger I watched all the nasties I didn't enjoy them I don't know why I did it to myself. I feel like it hurt my soul maybe silly to say. I have to wonder about the people that make and enjoy these types of movies and like seeing people hurt and say it's ok if it's fake. Maybe because I've seen it happen to real life people. Now I like things more spooky ghosty alieny if I want horror.
Yeh I much prefer the less gory and graphic side of horror it’s definitely where I feel more comfortable and can truly enjoy horror that way - I mean I don’t judge people for their tastes but it’s difficult to understand why people get entertainment from the really violent movies out there
i remember watching hostel (the 1st one at least) like 15 or so years ago and even though i saw it not knowing what to expect the torture was kinda okay. another big part of the movie is the nudity and sex scenes that ofc happened because it was the 2000s 🙄 and that was bothersome too
The brutality of the Terrifier films surprisingly doesn't even come from the gore. For instance, the infamous bedroom scenes brutality comes from the aftermath. They certainly are not for everyone. The first Saw movie is fantastic. Human Centipede films are just not great. The premise is terrible and not well executed. A Serbian Film is just a miserable experience. You are basically missing out on a strong loss of faith in humanity by skipping it. I think you are making the right choice.
The terrifier movies are not really horror, more so just “how violent can we make these kills?” with no real substance. That being said, the 3rd one was entertaining for me, but not scary.
@stefanforrer2573 😂 you're allowed to have your own opinion.
Um...
I love it.
Bullshit. Martyrs and A Serbian Film definitely have social commentary and especially Martyrs is a masterpiece
A Serbian Film is really just tasteless and pretentious slop, but Martyrs is actually very worthwhile to analyse, a misunderstood masterpiece
The first Human Centipede is pretty good, there's some themes/messages, but the other two are kinda dumb (though the third one has a tiny bit of social commentary on the prison system if you squint hard enough)
Terrifier movies are like the original Evil Dead movies. Tons of gore, but so over the top it’s funny.
I just can’t with that level!!
It's a disgusting film, no sense to it.@@almostacinephile
@@duckula316 Have you seen it or just heard people talk about it?
It's also all very obviously fake!
Yeh absolutely - I can totally respect others tastes, I’m happy to stay in my lane where it’s comfy 😌
A serbian film truly scarred me. I applaud your decision of not ever seeing that
I am glad as well 😅
Cannibal Holocaust is the one film I really wish I had never seen. The live animals being cruelly killed has stayed with me. I wish I could go back in time and not watch it. Hills Have Eyes, particularly the remake, whilst quite uncomfortable viewing at times, is a stroll in the park by comparison.
@@Rodj71 I walked out of Pink Flamingos because of that
Yep I had no problem with Martyrs, Terrifier, Human Centipede but Cannibal Holocaust is a hard no for me because of the animal abuse.
Also A Serbian film. child sex abuse is a big no for me.
I understand that. The child abuse in A Serbian Film is not real obviously, so it's on a different level
For me personally I don't watch exploitation (Serbian, sodom, august underground etc)
I won't watch r*** revenge or any type of SA, and I won't watch anything with animal cruelty. Also I watched the first terrifier and have no interest in seeing the others 😂😅 but I respect the director and his success story. I love how the third film was more successful at the box office than the blockbuster films with massive budgets
Paranormal activity is worth avoiding out of sheer boredom.
I will keep them on my no list as well - thanks for the recs to stay away from 😅
Do you mean Silo the series (it’s pretty good) or Salo? I will not watch Salo either…
@dss5742 yes, I meant Salo.
@carissamartin7646 At 15 -16 years old it looked real enough!!! I don't they faked those animal deaths.
The original Hills Have Eyes is pretty tame.
What i thought
Time may change me yet!
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a disturbing low budget classic! They made two documentaries about this movie! They feature interviews with the cast and behind the scenes stories of how this movie was made!
A good psychological thriller is Session 8!
I am really interested in the original Texas chainsaw massacre - I haven’t got around to it but I have a copy, and I think the doc is kicking around prime some where 👍
@@almostacinephile The original TCM is one of the greatest horror movies ever made, and it's remake is pretty damn good too.
@ I think he will get to it sometime soon. On his last video there were a few comments recommending The Substance for him to watch
I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that, while undoubtedly dramatized to a point, it is true.
i agree with your video so much and you're also funny!! i will be back it's so hard to get into horror that isn't just torture corn/gore i prefer thrillers and psychological horror more
Yes!! I am not a gore girly so I’ll stick to my lane 😅
I can sit through a lot of human misery, but if one animal is involved in anyway, the film immediately gets turned off. I can’t stand any type of cruelty to animals. People will always try to destroy each other, they just need to leave the animals be. 🙏🏻💙
I agree animals is also a big no no
To me Terrifier is still more of a comedy. DHT is such a good actor, he shows it the most in 2, he makes it so everytime art is on screen u know u might laugh
I’ve seen clips and totally agree - the violence though, I am a wimp so maybe I need to build some tolerance 😝
The most disturbing film i ever saw was Midsommar (2019), i felt physically sick after watching that film.
I actually really liked that film! But I totally get it’s not for everyone ☺️
I just don’t think I can tolerate the violence - not my jam but glad you love them
Terrifer is one of the greatest horror movies ever made i am so ready for Terrifer 4
Same, here! I absolutely love the franchise ❤
Terrifier 2 is one of the greatest horror movies ever made, the first one's okay but nothing special.
Oh no sorry!
@@almostacinephile Don't be sorry, I've done it to myself 😂 But that's horror, isn't it!
I watched the Human Centipede once and have no intentions to ever watch it again 🤢🤮. Great commentary 👍👍
Haha good to know it should be avoided 😜
I’ve seen it hundreds of times
I just finished this video and I've seen all these movies myself except _A Serbian Film, The Human Centipede,_ and *some* of _Cannibal Holocaust._
I would not have recommended any of those films to most horror fans...
I would avoid the Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
I’ve heard of it - Michael Gambon is in it?
Haha! 😜
I'm with ya on The Human Centipede...yeesh.
Yeppp 🤮
Slashers are not for everyone. People watch them mainly for the kills
I personality think saw is so much more ten pointless gore, love the franchise especialy the first!!
I really like the saw series but it did take a dip from The Final Chapter (what a letdown!). Jigsaw was ok but the secret apprentice twist at the end really put me off (and he’s never been mentioned since) Saw X however was great!!
@phillipbailey2525 Truee
The hills have eyes is ok, the remake was pretty good too. the sequel however…..
I'm glad you actually watched Bone Tomahawk. A handlful of graphic scenes to be sure. One of my favorites. Stellar acting and script. Top notch pruction. Fantastic story.
A film that would likely make your don't watch list is the Russian film, Hard to be a God.
Yeh Bone Tomahawk has been ingrained into my mind now 😧 but I will definitely be avoiding your rec haha
Martyrs is... an evil movie. Stayed with me for days.
Glad I am staying well away
The one that baffles me described as a scary or horror film is The Blair Witch Project. a wonky camera and some sticks? doesn't frighten me
No 🫤 not sure I can sit through it without getting motion sickness
As much as I love gore and violent movies, I don't think I'll ever watch any of the Terrifier movies. They honestly just seem so dry and boring and like there is no real plot besides the gore. They seem like such a slog to get through.
nahhh terrifier SLAPS.. id say theres very little slow parts, especially when art is on screen bc its HILARIOUS 😭 they somehow manage to make a character that doesnt speak-way more animated & funny than usual
ive seen terrifier one, & im halfway through the second one. terrifier 1 seems like it primarily exists to show what art is capable of, but 2 is filled with a lot of story & in depth characters
For me it’s more the violence side that keeps me away from those movies!
You also don't sound very interesting or fun to be around.
lol probably not 🤷♀️
I absolutely agree with you avoiding those movies that are bad taste as i am huge horror movie fan i was bothered by the
Kind of torture type movies made but i watched some of the ones you showed such as the french movie Martyrs but sorry
I did and the Human Centipede disgracful also but Eli Roth's Hostel is nasty stuff just like his latest movie Thanksgiving
That i never want to see again, thou there is a movie i saw once in the theatre called Untraceable thats very disturbing
Like the Saw movies that left me head wrecked for some time after seeing it.
Paranormal Activity is one of the only films that have actually scared me. To me, it feels very real because of the found footage style.
Hiya , im with you on alot of the films you talked about , ive seen the human centipeed 2 defo one of the most disturbing films ive ever seen , worse than the 1st
The 1st saw film is tamer than the rest of them
The rest are a no no from me lol ❤❤
I am currently in the midst of a saw hyperfixation, mostly because i'm no longer bugged by the gore in that franchise. I still hate almost all slasher films tho :,]
Wow you are braver than me. I think I could do 1 but beyond that … no.
if you can watch one it’s super good and honestly the only one i genuinely recommend, the rest get ify but i personally like them because the plots get ridiculous and the gore doesn’t bother me too much anymore. other slashers definitely bother me tho
Actual animal deaths aside, I don't really have any limits, but good on you for making boundaries whilst also trying to "Safe gatekeep".
I really regretted watching Tusk, too disturbing. Won’t watch human centipede, learned that lesson!
Martyrs may also eventually get a watch from me with a lot of averting my eyes from the screen as the story sounds interesting but it's gonna be a film that unless it gets assigned as homework for something
Everything else on your list is a hard pass for me as well.
Not a good film among them ;)
Your definition of horror is comically narrow
Yeh that scene in bone tomahawk is still living in my head rent free - and now I know, that I can comfortably say I don’t need to see something like that again 😅
Bone Tomahawk is exactly why I google any movies I'm unsure of bc I went into Bone Tomahawk thinking it was supernatural and now I'm scarred for life. I can't do real life horror.
I don't mind Evil Dead or Terrifier even if they're really gorey bc if the supernatural element and then they're so overtop with the kills.
Yeh I didn’t either!! And I can’t ever erase the images that scarred my brain 🫠
I'm not a fan of gore and body horror in movies but I can tolerate it and appreciate the creativity, personally my solid no is any film with sexual violence and exploitation, A Serbian Film is also a solid no for me and I have a hardcore tolerance, I don't want to put myself through that especially if it involves minors or animals fuck that
I love Terrifier and Saw. And the others I can probably watch, except for A Serbian Film.
Yeh as I mentioned in the vid - there are some on that list that are hard nos, some like saw/hostel I could potentially give a go at some point 🙂
Understandable, have a great day
saw has a great story to it i enjoy them . paranormal activity isn't really a found footage film or just two hours of cam footage saying that it wasn't any good
Haha good to know!
Hostel.......Boring/tedious beyond words.
Thanks for the recommendation! I haven’t got round to seeing Megan yet 😊
I completely agree with you. I have watched one or two of these, but I kind of regret it.
Oh no!
The Terrifier movies are literally the best thing in the world and one of my favourite franchise. It simply redefines the slasher genre in a new way
im only 13 but ive watched all of these movies XD i love terrifier movies so much
Omg I have a 12yr old and cannot imagine him watching them 😵💫
When I was younger I watched all the nasties I didn't enjoy them I don't know why I did it to myself.
Yeh I much prefer the less gory and graphic side of horror it’s definitely where I feel more comfortable and can truly enjoy horror that way - I mean I don’t judge people for their tastes but it’s difficult to understand why people get entertainment from the really violent movies out there
i remember watching hostel (the 1st one at least) like 15 or so years ago and even though i saw it not knowing what to expect the torture was kinda okay. another big part of the movie is the nudity and sex scenes that ofc happened because it was the 2000s 🙄 and that was bothersome too
I feel like I could maybe give this a go at some point … maybe 🤔
The brutality of the Terrifier films surprisingly doesn't even come from the gore. For instance, the infamous bedroom scenes brutality comes from the aftermath. They certainly are not for everyone.
The first Saw movie is fantastic.
Human Centipede films are just not great. The premise is terrible and not well executed.
A Serbian Film is just a miserable experience. You are basically missing out on a strong loss of faith in humanity by skipping it. I think you are making the right choice.
I kind of agree with this list. I hate shaky cam in movies. It makes me so motion sick and dizzy. It's why I can't play some games.
Yeh it’s difficult to focus!!
I saw a review of Terrifier and decided I'm never watching it. Also Bone Tomahawk gave me PTSD.
Bone tomahawk made me feel sick for daysssss 😅
The terrifier movies are not really horror, more so just “how violent can we make these kills?” with no real substance. That being said, the 3rd one was entertaining for me, but not scary.
The second one has a plot I haven't seen the third one yet
@ third one is best
A lot of these make tye list of places I'm not willing to go... I also thought about _Irreversable,_ but I guess that's not classified as horror.
Irreversible is in that grey area of cinema known as Transgressive cinema.
And Paranormal Activity is soooo boring.
This the point.
Yeah I understand what you are saying but Hills Have Eyes is not that bad
It may be one I’ll brave at some point 🙂
wait, why do you own Hostel if you never want to watch it?
Haha it came in a pack of 5 movies - and never say never 😜
The substance just looks gross but i might still watch it😂
dumb question, but have you watched the Halloween movies? best horror franchise ever imo
Yeh I have seen 1 and 2 - I haven’t seen the rob zombie versions or the weird alt timelines or the new ones yet
Don't watch horror films in general then
I mean there are a lot of different horror films out there and many I love so I will just stick to what I like 😌
