  • Disclaimer: This method involves water and electronics which should never mix. This method covers most precautions to keep water out of any electronic parts but can’t 100% guarantee that to always be the case. If you choose to try this proceed with caution and take your time. Biggest two rules..always seal off the face so no water can get in the eyes and most important..never lift her up or flip her over or on her side. She must say flat and horizontal at all times.
Ok now that’s out of the way…lol welcome to Spa day for the 1987 Talking Jill from Playmates! Over the past year I’ve had many requests to do a tutorial on how I wash and clean a Jill dolls hair and also how to style and curl it. This video covers the method I personally use to wash the hair. I don’t curl the hair until much later in my restoration process so for now you will see what Jill looks like with clean and relaxed hair. I will do a short curling video another time.
I prob don’t need a disclaimer but we obviously take a huge risk putting water on a doll that literally says not to get wet in the instruction lol. So I chose the safest way ti get it done and the results are worth it in my opinion. This is not something that can be done quickly. I usually spend 4+ hours on each doll. The longest part is detangling. You have to go slow or you will rip out plugs of hair!
If you have any questions you know to add them in the comments and I will do my best to reply. Thank you all and enjoy the video! 💖

Thank you for your hair makeover video. This is really interesting and informative. Didn't realize Jill's hair had a plate underneath. Nice to know how you did her hair. Thank you for sharing it

What a great tutorial! If the hair seems to be hard to comb after washing, use a little spritz or two of armor all, it will put the plasticizer back in and will protect it from UV light. It works on most vinyl dolls as well…it helps keep the vinyl soft and supple. If you have to open her scalp, wipe the scalp edges with alcohol so you’ll get a tight seal when glued….just something I have done when I have washed and conditioner and as I comb her out. One point to remember, most human products will only sit on the hair and will attract dirt dust and not keep the curls set..so just wanted to try and help you out ! I love your vids and listening to your voice as you explain what you are doing….

Thank you! I recorded this months ago but lost it when my phone crashed. Luckily I found it up in that cloud thingy finally. So I was able to put the parts in order.

Sean, just wanted to let you know that I got my Cricket working, sadly I had to get a parts doll as the clutch for the tape player wouldn’t work….but I just switched heads as you said and Voila! She talks loud and clear! Scared the heck out of me! Thank you so much for teaching me your methods of repair and restoring! Next Is her curls after I net her hair and carefully wash it retie it and curl it! Once again I am grateful to you!😊

Hey! That’s so awesome to hear! Yes once you realize all the parts of cricket and corky are the same, you can really just build the perfect one. I’m glad my tinkering around could help out. I bet after her spa day she’s gonna look good as new! Congrats.

I think Jillian looks wonderful with long straight red hair instead of curly blonde hair as my suggestion. There is nothing wrong with Jillian having long straight red hair.

I'm probably a little more extreme with hair washing when it comes to my mechanical doll's specifically from the 80's, 90's, & early to mid 2000 era. First let the hair soap in fabric softener for 2 to 3 hours, then wash with sesame street baby shampoo then using conditioner then washing with baby shampoo again then washing with dawn dish soap. Luckily with the 80's doll's they were designed with half scalp's so there scalp can be taken off~ I usually try to take off the half scalp with the majority of hair & wash it separately from the doll then e6000 glue to glue it back on to the head. Usually I let the half scalp dry in an area with natural sunlight no hair dryer & it'll dry over a few days time also I take a dry towel & try to pat in & out on the half scalp. As for combing I use a baby wet brush after the hair is shampood & works really nice. As for my mechanical doll's that don't have half scalp's but are still mechanical I wash the doll's hair the same way for the most part but the doll is completely upside down & after washing the hair I tried to get a dry towel & try to pat it as much as possible to absorb the majority of the water then still keep the doll upside down for a while~ I also use frizz ease detangling spray, Johnson detangling spray, & Barbie detangling spray. I use the barbie detangling spray on my own hair because I love the cotton candy scent & works wonders for a young adult. The other 2 I use on my doll's hair both work great & can be sprayed in without having to wash out later. Got all 3 to tinker around with more so to see which works the best. All 3 are good~ 🤷‍♀️✌️

I love the hard work and detail you put into your cleaning and care. High applause! 🙌🏻
Yes I’ve learned in the doll world everyone has their own methods for sure! I used to have extra steps like the fabric softener soak and I ended with Aragon oils for extra shine. I just found it didn’t make much of a difference personally so I cut things out over the years. Gosh I remember way back when I just started out I had a bad frizzed cricket and I soaked her in the normal blue fabric softener and it totally gave her hair a blue tint! After that I used clear only lol.
I love the idea of having them upside down but could you imagine trying to have big old Jill hanging upside somehow? It sure would make things easier. I will have to investigate your frizz products as of now I use a boil wash and it takes so long.
Thanks again for all the info! 💖💖💖

@@cricketandcorkysclubhousef8686 No problem~ 👍 Yeah Jill is not petite in size I'm guessing she's at least 3 or 4 foot tall. 🤔 I had a doll similar to her in the 90's but non mechanical Suzie Stretch almost the same height as me as a kid lol. She would be a feet to turn upside down though. I'm sure she costed playmates a pretty penny to assemble back in her hay day because of her parts being so big. Yeah no problem though people actually gave me hate for using the sesame street brand for shampoo & body wash for my doll's because it's from the dollar store in the doll community but both do work~ 👍✌️

The only thing to remember about this video is that this way works for those who are able to take Cricket (or Jill) apart and then put them back together again. If you don’t know how to do this then you need to use a “dry” shampoo (one that will not wet the controls). You spray it on the hair (like cleaning stuff on furniture) 3 times a day for about 6 weeks and by the second day you will start noticing that the smell has gone away hugely however it must be done for the full 6 weeks to be completely gone. It may also be worth washing the clothes she’s in before you wash her hair (to get rid of the smell of smoke) and then wash them again after you finish washing (spraying) the hair. This part (the clothes) can be done by a normal washing machine

Does this same method work with the Cricket dolls? I'm not sure if their scalps can be removed like Jill's 😭 I've just found a Cricket at goodwill and I've been scouring the internet trying to figure out how to safely restore her XD I don't really have any experience with anything outside of furbys and worlds of wonder toys lol

Congrats on rescuing a cricket! I have several videos on how to repair and restore crickets. She does have the same hair as Jill, but good news! Cricket doesn’t have any electronics in her head so you don’t have to worry about removing the scalp. Still there are metal rods in there that go down into the body so don’t let water get into the eyes. That will drop into her empty head and potentially rust the metal rods and also drip down into the body where all the circuitry is. That’s why I cover their face with plastic wrap and tape.
Good lock and I know she will be so fun to have around!
