I haven't been through the tunnels since 2004. Thank you for taking me on the journey. We used to go see my sister her husband and kids. My boys enjoyed the road trip. I found the tunnels most fascinating parts of the turnpike.
I remember last year me and my friend took a road trip to new york in my car we went like 120 the whole way racing like 3 cars at like 3 am best road trip I have ever taken truly amazing
Ahh nothing better than riding through mountains with metal🎸🎸in background especially since we have none here to ride through. On a family summer vacation road trip on Pa.pike going in one end of tunnel was sunny🌞and dry and other end out was pouring rain☔minds all blown😵never forget that😵and no radio signal inside them.
Absolutely fascinating. I drove the PA turnpike frequently when I lived in the area. I actually lived very close to the Willow Grove entrance to the turnpike. What an exciting ride. Thank you for posting this.

Awesome video man!!! I live only a couple miles from the Lehigh the first tunnel you went through. I never saw the others, so I enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing
So many hours of my childhood were spent traversing the PA turnpike when my family traveled from Baltimore to Butler 3 times or so per year (I'm the only member of my immediate family who wasn't born in Butler. Dad got transferred to Baltimore and I'm the baby.)
Thank you so much! I'm traveling by fifth wheel from the Pacific Northwest to Pennsylvania in a few months and trying to decide which route to take. It's good to get a preview of what I'll encounter. I've been through tunnels so narrow they gave me the heebie-jeebies, but these look okay even though the Allegheny seems really long.
Many a trip through those tunnels going from Cleveland to Elkton MD back in the 70's. All the Howard Johnson's at the rest areas and Exxon gas. Cross the Susquehanna river, get off at Harrisburg and head south. Crossing that bridge you would see 3-mile island off to one side. Never thought anything of it, prior to 1979 anyways.
As originally designed in 1937, there were nine turnpike tunnels. From west to east: Laurel Hill was built and bypassed in the mid-60's. Quemahoning and Negro Mountain tunnels were bypassed during construction in the 30's. Allegheny Mountain still exists. Rays Hill and Sideling Hill were abandoned and bypassed in the late 60's. Tuscarora, Kittatinny and Blue Mountain still exist. All became twin tunnels in the 60's when backups of five miles and more were common at the two-lane tunnels. With the Turnpike Commission rebuilding the original Turnpike and expanding it to six lanes, the four-lane tunnels are becoming obsolete and are deteriorating a bit, but still safe to drive. Allegheny is to be either bypassed or expanded and rebuilt soon; plans for rebuilding the other three tunnels are underway.
What I wonder is if they were able to be bypassed then why were tunnels originally built? I assume it has to do with the technology at the time, it’s just something that interests me and I would like to know more
@@g.t.richardson6311 I77 in Virginia has 2 tunnels through similar bridges, East River Mountain and Big Walker Mountain, which are in the Valley and Ridge province of the Appalachians, just like Tuscarora, Kittatiny and Blue Mountain are in PA. The Allegheny Tunnel is actually through the Allegheny Front, which is an escarpment, not part of the Valley and Ridge.
I know. I've been through it. That's why I titled this video the 4 of I-76. I didn't go through that Lehigh Extension tunnel until a year after I made this video.
I love driving through tunnels. We don’t have mane near me since the land is so flat. The big exception is the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, connecting Michigan and Ontario.
I don't go through the Allegany tunnel to often. I'm normally heading west going to Somerset County. Bit mostly get off at Fort Littleton ( if i'm going to the Abandoned Turnpike) or Breezewood if I'm heading to Meyersdale for the Maple Festival and visiting family.
If they so shut down Allegany Tunnel in the near future I can see tons of people hoping to sneak in and explore it the same way alot of us do at the Abandoned Pa Turnpike.
I heard that a truck driver was recently killed in the Lehigh Tunnel. I think an electric beam or a slab of concrete fell from the ceiling and went through his windshield. You think maybe this will force PA to adress the aging tunnels and come up with possible solutions?
This tunnel surfing was so interesting. Wallie, could you please film the squirrel hill tunnel coming from Mt. Lebanon to downtown PA? I remember as a kid when we were driving thru saying instant pittsburgh when we came out of the tunnel!
Coming from mt Lebanon you’d come thru fort Pitt tunnel and see a great view The squirrel hill, tunnel east and it’s still a mile from downtown but a good view eventually Mount Lebanon and the squirrel Hill tunnel have no relevance to each other
The ventilation system up above the tunnel is to Evac the exhaust fumes from vehicles traveling through the tunnel so that you don't die of carbon monoxide while having your windows rolled down
@@brucesmith9144 you mean the current Northbound tunnel the original 1950s Construction underneath the Blue Mountains. That one can still be operated as two lane traffic.
@@EpicThe112 yes. When there was only one tunnel and weekend traffic going to the Poconos turned that tunnel into a literal bottleneck. Much better with two tunnels.
I pass through 3 of these tunnels on my way from harrisburg to Indiana PA and just short of the 4th when I get off bedford. One time I was driving and didnt realise I missed my exit till I came across the Allegheny tunnel and was like "wait, I only go through 3 on my way to indiana" didnt realise I passed my exit by about 25 mins

If they decide to bypass the Allegheny tunnel. They should put 4 miles of road way on each side and call it the Abandoned Turnpike West and make it a bike and hike trail too. Provided they make sure the tunnel wont collapse and kill anyone. But it would be unique being an abandoned double tunnel.

I have been out to Johnstown about 3 or 4 times, and I remember going thru these tunnels. Its impressive how massive these tunnels are.
Video is cool but it don't do the tunnels justice.Must experience them in life, especially at night after driving in pitch black for hrs.

Chesapeake tunnel under the bay is cool to drive through for South/Midwest folks like us, especially as a child!
I just drove through those tunnels and honked in them
As a kid, the game was to hold your breath thru the tunnel.

what are those songs while driving through tunnels?
2:00 I like the music playing right before you approach the Tuscarora Mountain Tunnel. It sounds like you are entering the Holy Grail of tunnels!
I remember I been to those tunnels going east coming from Colorado in 1999 and 2003. I was on my way to Easton.
I took them TO Colorado in 2017
I recall in the late 60s having 7 tunnels all going to two lanes and no lighting to speak of.

Done the current 4 100s times

Gasoline truck allowed though the tunnel?

I correct myself... It was in march 2016 when they approved the speed limit change to 70
The original speed limit was 70 set by the governor early in the 40s
It reminds me of the Holland Tunnel in New York City
