    you're technically about 1300lbs over GVW on your truck, which I think you already know. It's sad what the door sticker says for payload on these 3/4 tons, time you put passengers in you can't haul but 1000lbs in the bed that's no better than a 1/2 ton lol. I think they do that to stay under the 10,001lb for vehicle class, but I think your ok like you said as long as you're not over axle or tire wheel limit per dot. The 1 ton single wheels are 11,700 GVW and & 7000lb rear axle, I don't understand why you don't see more of them on dealer lots, cause not everyone needs or wan'ts a dually, especially if it's your only truck. seems like 3500 single wheels would be a hot seller. good video

    Great job on a very touchy RUclips subject. A lot of people would not do a video like this due to the negative comments that can come up from talking about trailer weights and how to calculate the most you can legally tow with your vehicle. It is great that you are calculating and know where you are when you tow. At any time did you feel like you 3/4 ton truck and trailer was unsafe with the weight being right on the edge of maxed out? I read everywhere on the forums that the manufactures are conservative on there GVWR figures.

    • @ShaneBurrell1
      @ShaneBurrell1  5 лет назад +1

      The 3/4 ton felt unsafe at highway speeds. Two hands on wheel and tight grip. Stressful. The one ton completely different . Doesn’t get pushed around on interstate. I can tow easily now without all the stress of keeping the trailer where I want it.

    • @bon2198

      It is true manufacturers underrate GVWR so people can register them as "light" duty. For instance anything in IL with a GVWR of over 8k has to have annual state safety inspections. So basically anything over a 1/2 ton truck. But regardless exceeding GVWR is illegal, whether the truck can "handle" it or not and you’re setting yourself up for a serious court battle if you’re involved in an accident your fault or not.

    I scaled my semi and trailer at work with airbags empty and full. In the end it took less than 100 pounds off the drive axle.

      @ShaneBurrell1  4 года назад

      I've since upgraded to a 3500 but since I had the scale we checked some trucks with different mounting postions of the 5th wheel pivot. Seems that some that have the pin in front of the axle vs above or behind it seems to have some but little effect. The air bags mainly just change the ride height.

      My 2019 Chevy 2500 diesel, crew cab and 8’ bed with full fuel and myself and girlfriend weighs 8540. Gotta pay attention to that pin weight as these are 10K GVWR vehicles. And 5th wheel pin weights will eat that up QUICKLY

    Here’s another example where an RV owner seems to have no issues running down the road maxed out on his tow vehicle. At least he knows he’s maxed out or over max, depending on how he packs the trailer. Some don’t know their payload capacity of their tow vehicle. Ask your dealer what the payload capacity is and live as far under that number as possible. The family of 5 coming at you in the opposite lane will thank you...!!!

    • @ShaneBurrell1
      @ShaneBurrell1  5 лет назад +3

      A dealer is the last person you want to ask. Every dealer I've spoken to in the last 20 years will tell you a half ton will easily tow 12,000lbs. Best to look it up and go more capacity than you need. IMHO being just under payload capacity isn't the target, you want to as much extra capacity as you can. What was important to me in this video was actually measuring it. I've done other videos on my upgrade to a 3500 Dually and it's night and day difference as well as special license requirements. I'm interested to know what your experience was. For me this was the first 5th wheel experience in this video. I've come a long way since then.

    Exceeding your vehicles GVWR is not good to do. Can the truck handle it? Most likely as those are 6k axles most likely and tires can usually handle like 3140 each (depending on tire of course). And tow capacity is never the issue. Payload is always the issue. And if you get into an accident whether it’s your fault or not and the accident investigator finds you overloaded it is now your fault. And god forbid someone gets hurt or worse you’re now looking at possibly vehicular homicide or at the lease gross negligence. I am an RV’er myself and know the laws and how to calculate all these weights from being a former truck driver and having served 20 years in the military. More people need to be informed of their trucks actual capabilities and not the standard brochure. Look in the door jam will tell you allowed payload and GVWR. even easier, weigh the vehicle with gear and usual passenger and subtract from GVWR and viola. Allowable payload left. You’d be surprised at how much you CAN’T tow. Even travel trailers have hitch weights. Sorry for the rant but I’m so sick of people I see at campgrounds overloaded and being unsafe.

      Keith's Hobby Shop you aren't wrong, I've seen a lot of pickups over loaded myself and people act like it's no big deal. I own a 2005 Chevrolet 2500HD Duramax CCSB 4x4 that pulls a decent load within its limits, but I see others towing 38'+ fifth wheel trailers etc. There is no way they aren't overloaded! In reality, any 3/4 ton will be overloaded in a hurry. The trucks are pretty hefty from the factory.

    • @bon2198
      @bon2198 3 года назад +2

      @@2015_Rubicnn exactly. You’ll run out of payload long before “towing capacity”. And most people can’t understand that.

    Pin weight or tongue weight does not affect pay load if affects rear axle and tire weight rating...

    • @ShaneBurrell1
      @ShaneBurrell1  5 лет назад +2

      Not sure what you are saying but the payload is what you can carry and pin weight and tongue weight count against payload as it is an additional weight on the axles and tires.

      Max payload is approx 2200lbs. I used a curt fifth wheel base rail kit and the airlift bags. No interference with mounting. They coexist without issue.

      I have a puma 373 QSI which I reviewed here : ruclips.net/video/zM_VWObf5F4/видео.html
      I love the trailer. Just the right size for RZR hauler and nice interior without a lot of pin weight.

    • @bon2198
      @bon2198 4 года назад +1

      Pin weight of that trailer unloaded from factory is 2073. That’s not a light pin weight, especially as you saw once loaded. Especially since the 5th wheel hitch itself and rails is about 200lbs. You’re already overweight without a thing in the trailer or gear or you in the truck.

      It's just a dual axle. Puma lists it at 37' 11". GVWR online says 14076 lb but the sticker is just under.

      Measuring with a kolbalt tape measure from very back to farthest point forward it is just under 43 ft.
