    These knives have real personality! I have some great kitchen knives (Wüsthof, Messermeister, Shun...), but my favorite is made by my grandfather during the World War II, from unknown material. It's ugly, blackened, but still razor sharp.

    AWESOME JOB! I got kind of squeamish when you were pushing down on the tang. I was like, please don't let his hand slide down that blade. Like how you reheated and used the vice for correct the bend.
    Again, impressive work.

    Prior to quenching, would you normalize a blade cut from a circular saw blade? Assuming it is some form of tool steel other then that I don't know it's composition?
    Thanks.

  • @heavy_hate5346
    @heavy_hate5346 3 года назад +2

    Good work!
    But I have some questions:
    Why would you heat up the metal? What is that for?
    And why you left such a distance between the blade and handle? Even tho, the blade have 90* corner, so you cannot slip your hand on the cutting edge anyway.
    Thanks.

    Before i start my own , why did you heat treat it if it comes from a saw blade ? I mean could you just keep the hardness of the saw blade as it was ?
    I have an old huge knife that i'm just going to cut it out and make a smaller , do i need to heat treat that ?

    • @jordan6750
      @jordan6750 2 года назад

      There's multiple types of heat treatments for metal, like annealing, hardening/quenching, tempering. Annealing and hardening both usually involve heating metal to glowing red with former letting metal slowly cool back to room temp in order to soften metal making it easier to shape and work (a file for ex: would be very difficult to work and need a grinder & impossible to cut with a hacksaw unless you annealed it first). And with the hardening the metal is rapidly cooled after glowing red by quenching. Tempering lowers the hardness to increase strength and decrease brittleness (an axe or chisel that is used with repeated impacts would crack or break if whole piece was fully hardened but if not hardened at all get dull so tempering reaches a balance. With the saw blade the metal below the teeth is likely not hardened so it doesn't shatter if blade hits a knot or large screw so the edge of the blade would need to be adjusted to hold sharp edge well. The tang is thin and a weak spot where it meets the body and doesn't need to hold an edge. It just needs to survive use so you'd want it tempered on lower end of scale. Heating also helps if you need to bend/straighten any area without creating internal stresses in the metal there (like how bending a paper clip back and forth eventually stresses enough to cause break)
