Nitpicking about references only few people would know? That’s a losing battle. Most media that uses it either does so as a subtle nod to give dedicated fans something to enjoy, or explains it in a way that it can be understood by most if it is necessary to know. Using that as a point against fandoms doesn’t work, it’s like the polar opposite of gatekeeping.
It’s a meh episode. I wouldn’t say it sucks though.
I wouldn’t give it any less than a 6/10
Capaldi Deserves better
This episode did not Empress me
AGHHH!
Well done
Episode was royally bad
This joke is better than the episode
sigh
A reference to "Friday" is enough to start a rant about "..shouldn't have to look it up!"? Even if someone hasn't read "Robinson Crusoe" there's references to "Friday" in so many shows that many people should get it, much like someone who hasn't read "Moby Dick" would still know who "Captain Ahab" is, or are people that out of touch with the classics already?
MadScientist512 Never heard of Friday or Captain Ahab. But I've obviously heard of moby dick.
sadly only things people know about these days are social medias and fortnite dances. Sad day and age to be sure.
It's a classic. If you don't know the reference you are uneducated. Sorry but that's a fact, and you should probably do something about it.
MadScientist512 shut up you dork, with your, ’everything was better when classical literature was popular, aren’t phones just the devil?’.
LadyDoomsinger shut up! Just because you don’t like classical literature does not mean you’re uneducated, it just means you don’t like classical literature
Personally, I love the Sanctuary Base Six suits. Still, only The Doctor should have one, as he was in a rush to get back to Rose in that episode.
The TARDIS can literally make a a million of them inside it's wardrobe room, ya know. It can literally expand infinitely and create anything one might be able to think up.
Only one thing that I can argue. To be fair on the falling in the hole, they're on mars. The gravity is less than a third of earth's, meaning the fall wouldn't have done as much damage. Granted, it doesn't justify it, but shouldn't the real error be about how everyone walks like they're on earth?
The rant about the references is so bizarre, lot of commentaries pointed out why the Friday name was relevant but the movies Bill mentioned are all pretty well and those mentions even have a payoff by the end. I won't coment on the Alpha Centauri broadcast though because I was convinced it was actually Nardole disguising his for for some reason....
I know you're not the biggest fan of over-arcing connected universe's but I'm pretty sure that Doctor who was doing this WAY before Marvel. Even in older episodes they referenced earlier episodes and aliens. That's what makes it great! And even if fans don't understand the references they can look it up and watch older episodes as a form of enlightenment and nostalgia. :)
Who doesn't know that Man Friday is the name of the native character in Robinson Crusoe? It's as common knowledge as Tiny Tim is the crippled child in A Christmas Carol and Lilliput is the country of little people in Gulliver's Travels and Alice chases a White Rabbit. And besides if you don't get the reference it doesn't matter. You don't need to know the significance of the naming to understand the story. Do you really want writers to assume their audiences know nothing? In which case why not explain everything from what a pop-up toaster is to who Albert Einstein is - that would get tedious pretty damn quick if we assume the audience is ignorant of everything.
Not long ago, when he reviewed "Thin Ice", Harry complained about the show treating the audience like they're stupid. Now he has the opposite problem?
I don't even know what Robinson Crusoe is, but I still feel like the name is good, as far as I care it's the day they found him.
I guess not all literature makes it mainstream as much as people wish it did.

I'll admit, I did not know Rosinante was the name of Don Quixote's horse when I first watched The Expanse, so when I later found out I went "ohhhhhhhhh! Now I get it!" similar to how for years after watching "So I Married An Axe Murderer" I still didn't know "Jane get me off of this crazy thing called love" was a reference to the intro of The Jetsons. Did either of these knowledge gaps impair my enjoyment? No. Did learning of the reference much later give me a bit of a thrill? Yep, absolutely. These cultural references are like Easter Eggs - fun to find, but if you don't get them it doesn't matter.
I have a huge problem. I love Alpha Centari. The Curse of Peladon being one of my favorite episode.
What was ironic was, in 2013 my grandparents started watching Doctor Who from the start and stumbled across The Monster Of Peledon as this episode was airing!
I don't dislike this story paticularly. I like the Victorian characters. But it feels so rushed and could have been so much more if it had been a two parter. But instead it feels unoriginal and unmemorable.
I enjoyed this episode. Yeah the gravity on Mars is different but it was still a decent episode.
You’re mad that the episode contains mere allusions to other things like classic literature? Ummm have you seen Doctor Who before? Making references to things is kind of its thing.
ever gonna watch some Classic Whos? Wouldn't mind some reviews of those (could be of the individual seasons, not episodes)
Androktone May Probably not, although this episode did have that kind of feel to it in terms of structure
if they extended format for an ice warrior story up to three episodes of 35 minutes or 40 each; and give the martians a darker, cold look maybe dark metallic blue or silver with glowing dark yellow eyes... set the story somewhere on a new world in like 4567 AD and have a story of conflict, betrayal, deep but unnexagerated emotion etc... it may make them the best who monster in that series... just my own idea of The doctor vs The Ice warriors...
the ending with alpha centuri isn't a you need to know who this is to know what is happening. it's hey if you know about the ice warriors from classic who here is a little thing for you to make you feel good.
I always enjoyed this one
Why do you hate comic books and comic book movies so much? And why are you blaming them for doctor who bringing up a really old character?
1:44 If you like Earth locations, you're gonna love Series 11; it's been confirmed that most episodes will be on our old familiar rock. At least they'll go back in time I suppose.
Mint Dragon it's not been confirmed the mirror wrote an article and they're infamous for lying about doctor who
attckonutube God damn fake news
They actually once said Ben Kingsley was confirmed to play davros.
seems to much effort to spit one person. Plus the doctor isn't meant to be piety like that.
Matthew Muir bit of an overreaction to what was shown as a joke in the episode itself.
Plus, the Doctor's gone centuries without touching Earth, let alone the Victorian era, especially since it no longer exists, and Vic may as well be Queen of one molecule given how big the universe actually is, I don't even think he would care enough to even fake some sort of anger.
I got taken out completely by the forced in Gender/race crap. I mean why have a random Victorian era soldier be a black guy with the same thick english accent, being treated exactly the same and saying he has a lil place back in england with the missus? Its so stupid and random....I love history so why do this? If the Doctor goes to a Zulu camp in the 19 century would be ok if the cheif was a white guy or my race Japanese? I mean its for diversity right? Its so awkward with the Ice Empress acting like a follower of anita sarkessian, a real cringe double gut punch there....and Bill was annoying as always but didn't count that lol
A reference to Friday is enough to start a rant about "..shouldn't have to look it up!", there's references to this in so many shows that even someone who hasn't read Robinson Crusoe would know about it, like someone who hasn't read "Moby Dick" would still recognise a "Captain Ahab" reference Are people rally that out of touch with the classics already?
Alpha Centauri is also a star so I assumed the Doctor just sent a message to that general area
i would really like to see mark gatus write a doctor who episode that homages the hammer horror films of the late 60's and early 70's.
Please tell me you'll have all these reviews done before the Christmas Special.
That's the plan!
PLEASE REVIEW SERIES 7 SO I CAN HEAR U REVIEW NIGHT TERROR
I’m just happy gatiss is off doctor who in terms of writing, this episode isn’t great but anything is better than sleep no more that cancerous piece of shit
Did the episode suck?
> Implying there actually is story here to review at all
Yes, because the story of a man who defied execution and turned the story into a legend and mixing it with a nearby alien exchanging return for servitude can't make a story.
Specially relating to the Empress of Mars episode, this might make you smile. A Shakespearean Sonnet by Andrew Barker called The Changing Hero's Journey. ruclips.net/video/G1irc0JnVhQ/видео.html About how the screenwriters of Dr Who, Star Trek, Wonder-woman and James Bond have had to re-imagine the Hero's Journey template. Which Joseph Campbell only ever said would be the case to be fair. Worth a click.
I didn't really like the episode that much. It was rather boring, and characters constantly went deaf for plot convenience. I liked the Alpha Centauri bit, because I have seen those episodes before. I agree with your conclusions, except for the outside media. I didn't notice most of them through the episode, and they didn't add or remove from the episode. What I did notice made it slightly better... not enough to save it though.
I knew u would hate the last scene cuz of the master, the last scene is alright 😂 get a grip.
Time Meddler really!
You do know that wind blows through tunnels underground right?
This is my least favourite episode of series 10, and my least favourite Mark Gatiss episode. Except Sleep No More. Sleep No More is shit.
This is my second favorite Gatiss episode and probably fifth favorite of S10.
A woman objectifying men?
What does that even mean?!
It was really poor. Not as bad as The Robin Hood one but really cringe worthy. Ice Warriors are little threat and a feminine leader is of course a must these days. After the claustrophobic Cold War this is very disappointing. Hopefully Gatis will stay away in future.
FINALLY!
This is the episode I quit on. I tried to watch it like 3 or 4 times and couldn’t get past like 20 minutes. Over the course of like a month or two. I just, lost interest yknow?
Wasn't it established that The Doctor was only "President of the World" during times of alien invasions or similar crisis situations? A temporary position.
And if you don't get a Robinson Crusoe reference, you need to go back to school.
No you're not wrong 9 years ago they did the Waters of Mars with David Tennant so you're not wrong there and I didn't like it the first time they did it. Episode so why would I like it now
The whole premise reminds me of the Space1889 setting
7/10. That’s what I’d say.
Who cares if people don't know who Alpha Centauri is? It's their loss
I mean s10 was meh but s11 is just awful no realy why the fuck did they chose Chibnal
I thought it was the worst episode of the series.
Did you not watch the series, then? It's the best series for Capaldi, because it didn't feel like The Clara Show. Knock Knock is much worse than this.
I kinda liked it tbh. And I liked Sleep No More.
Georgina Allen I really enjoyed this and sleep no more, it helps that I love the look of the British army back then though
Yes, yes it did. Worst episode of the series and Gattiss' second worst overall.
That's a weird way to say The Pilot. Empress of Mars is one of Gatiss' best stories.
Knock knock was clearly the worst episode
Weird. We all hate different ones in this series! Mine was Eaters of Light!
The Lego Communist I thought knock knock was just awful
Hi Harry have you seen the new "Series 10 box set" artwork cover? I think it looks quite good.
Patched
basically, the entirety of series 8-10 sucked
Still better than Smith's era though.
why did this episode have to be full of anti British messaging. I mean yes the empire do bad things do all empires but we did do some good as well. a lot of our major colonies became great nations like Canada, Australia, new Zealand and even Ireland. we advanced technology and spread it and western values and ideas thought out the world. we fought against the Nazis by our own choice and we let the empire go without much bloodshed unlike the French. so why are they trying to shame British viewers for being British. don't get me started on the cringey feminism either.
we also abolished slavery before many other countries and before the USA. later on we actually went on a world wide war against it a crusade if you will to fight slavery and the trade. yes we did us slavery early on but we abolished and then fought against it in the world. don't tell you that do they in school or on most documentaries.
Because brexit
mark gaytis
that's how you pronounce it, right?
I Love The Part At 6:18
4:24 is that a fucking blue rupee
I will not talk about the story, I don't know Doctor Who, I saw just some episodes, old and new Dr.Who. I liked The genesis of the Daleks, I saw this version Doctor's series too, and some other episodes. But the thing I write this is because, how it matched the geology of Mars as we know it now. Volcanic, hole in surface, cave systems of volcanic origin and so on. I think the worst thing for me was, the reliance on all the older media - it is too vast world. Maybe someone shall make some explaining and re-explaning episodes. The Dalek and Straton's? museum were awesome possibility, maybe if it would be repeated in the future with more explanation, but not sacrificing story for some reasons even other.Otherwise nobody would understand such things like what is that Alpha thing/being.The show shall build up interest in the people to know more, not wishing they all watched some old episode of a verry old TV series. But Robinson Crusoe is a verry common book, I saw it being read or read myself to the children, even my class was touching it a lot among other stories. There is some strange feeling, that if I could rewrite the script, it would be better, I hope I'm alone feeling such things...
The main bit I loved was when Alpha Centauri appeared. The Queen was very Terrahawks.
Oh and a couple of hot guys. Otherwise dull and routine.
Funny enough, I don't remember this episode... Hmm wheres my brain juice?
I was thinking, if they all went to Mars but the slaves were actually... Wait I never watched this one... In Utero my rambling
I thought Alpha Centuri was just some random thing in this episode, not a character from classic who!?!
There is a complete video series of Robinson Crusoe on RUclips, I watched it in school 3years ago.
only weird things was a English solider talking with a modern London accent. and the empress of Mars' sexist comments :/ didn't need that last one, it's sci fi - not radio 4
The Friday reference was really good. That book is read by most Americans in like middle school
I think the alpha centuries or whatever were in 11th hour and if you guys want to watch classic just don’t it’s confusing well at least the 60’s seasons cause the amount of lost episodes you have to work around is ridiculous (I’m on the episode called keys or marinus)
"Get Me The President Of The World" - in that Yank accent made my day.
Finally
I enjoyed the aesthetics of this episode. It's nothing special, but I found it enjoyable
Gatiss didn’t make the best episodes but they were all a lot better than most of Moffat’s episode
Hay what do you think of the new doctor
I don't really mind but what do you think
Can't wait for your thoughts on the 13th Dr's first episode
I kinda liked it TBH, some of the soldiers however...
The atmosphere's thinner on Mars so sound wouldn't travel as well.
At 0:47 seconds the inside of the base flashes for a microsecond
What about harry pwneage deathly hallows??
Then came Series 11...
I know Ace Creeper Sucks!
Robin son cruso is based on Alexander Selkirk from Scotland and near where I live.
lol I liked this episode
0:48 Fun fact that was not CGI
The Simpsons: Hit & Run!!! :D
There had better not be 5 week gaps between the rests of the reviews.
There is gonna be a wait on the next one, got a Harry Potter video and another Black Mirror in the works at the mo so Eaters will more than likely be after that.
Are you going to finish your analysis on Black Mirror season 3 ?????
Brando Yup
except this nobby
Wasn’t hide on mars too
Tillybobs wasn't hide about the ghost and the monster in the mansion?
Yes it was, but there was a bit in space. But that wasn't on Mars, although it was easily mistaken for Mars, due to being red.
Splendid review
RIP Barry
I'm not sure if they explains this in the episode but how did the British soldiers get to Mars during the 19th century.
Daniel Cooper they got on the ice warriors ship that’s where they found him
Okay thx. I was so confused watching that episode. Thanks for explaining that.
L
Deathly hallows
Ollie Francois is here
Dude, "Curse of Peladon" and "Monster of Peladon" are two of the most memorable episodes of Classic Who. If you aren't familiar with either of these stories, then that shows just what a fake fan you really are. I've only been a fan of the show since 2012 and I knew who Alpha Centauri was and was happy to see the character return to the show after all these years.
Come on, fake fan? Don't be a jerk, the Classics mostly haven't aged well and are a real pain to watch.
K
Jeez, complaining about obscure (or not so obscure, you know how many times Crusoe has been adapted? The was even one SET ON MARS!) references. You know it IS a science fiction series right? So maybe science fiction fans can be bothered to know, or even research if they don't, the references?
If laying everything out in the episode in one easily understood bite is what you expect from an entertainment medium, then maybe science fiction (especially a series with a LONG history) is not for you?
