The Walk - EP 71 - The Isle Of Wight Competed In The Space Race? - High Down, Isle Of Wight

- In this short video, I take a look at the site of the former High Down Rocket Test Site, near The Needles on the Isle of Wight.
The UK had a significant space program going back to the 1940s, and during the 50s and 60s were testing rockets on the cliff tops of the Isle of Wight.
The UK became the only nation to successfully launch satellites into space, and then abandon their space program.
By 1971, the program was over, but the site remains.

I carried out an archaeological survey of this site in 2005, with my great friend and colleague Chris Currie. Tragically, he died in an accident during the survey (aged 53). I was devastated... still am actually. I'm so sorry about your sister. As your father has said; she's only a heartbeat away.
Oh my that is so tragic.
I visited the site over 4 decades ago along with Alum bay the steepness of the place frightened and gave me vertigo ... So very sorry about your dear sister ... love light and protection be over you David and the family
I know what you mean! Thank you.
That's a real history lesson of a place I've always loved. Thank you. My thoughts are with you and your family at this time x
Thank you. Island history is crazy.
Thanks for another great history lesson, Gareth. Fascinating.
Sending love and light to you and all your family ❤
Thank you
Thanks, Gareth, for an informative video again. So sorry to hear about the loss of your sister, Kerry. Love and best wishes to you and the family. Phil
Thank you Phil.

Thank you.
Thank you, Gaz. That was fascinating. I read Spine of Albion after your dad's amazing docu last Christmas. The Isle of Wight looks so beautiful with so many mysteries. I have never been so I really need to book a holiday there. Much love to you all x
Great place to visit. Not so great if you are looking for a job!
Interesting vid Gareth, beautiful place too. I hope you and your family are doing OK through this difficult time.
Thank you.
Deepest condolences to you and your family
Thanks for the history lesson, something new to me. And sorry for your loss.
Thank you.
This is fascinating, who would have thought. Britain, always punching above its weight haha
I'm very sorry for your loss. One comfort I've found in loved ones passing around Christmas-time is the guarantee of gathering with friends and family when your soul needs it most. Rather than ruining the season, it's actually quite a blessing. Thank you for what you and your family represent for so many of us, hold your heads high.
I never even knew you were putting these walks on youtube, i have a lot of these to catch up on, thoughts are with you and your family at this sad time gaz, theres a lot of love and support for you all.

Nice to see you down South 🙂
Will be a lot more now.
You got a beautiful day for it! Great aerial shots and archive footage. Love and light to the whole family ❤ 🌟 🙏
Appreciate it mate.
Annoyingly most of the drone shots are from filming I did there a couple of years ago, as the wind was too much to sent the drone off land.
For me too it is a new information.
I learned yesterday about your sister. When tuning on the Gareth Icke tonight show. Sorry for Your loss Mate. Once again Thank You for what you are doing...on all fronts.
Thank you.
I was born in a Lincolnshire town where Tennyson lived, he wrote one of his famous poems The Babbling Brook based on a brook in Somersby, which was his place of birth.
Great video as per. Sorry to hear of your family's loss this week.
Thank you

Cracking video mate, really sorry to hear that your sister passed away, in my thoughts mate
Wernher Von Braun's gravestone tells us why we stopped trying to send rockets into "space" . ( psalms 19; 1) We are very sorry to hear of your tragic loss.
Thank you.
The Black Knight rockets (British Engineering) in polar orbits and the Black Knight satellite are interesting for us ufologists
Go on!
@@IckeWalks Tesla was supposedly getting signals from space. There was something in a polar orbit which is particularly difficult to do causing puzzlement to the yankee doodles they thought it might be the Black Knight rockets. Kind of a legendary ufo phenomenon is this mystery object in polar orbit been dubbed the Black Knight satellite - some think it may have been a drone sent from an ET race - also called the ancient envoy. Some speculate a lander descended to Babylon or Egypt inspiring the benben stone and enabled the priest class of the time to glean their bit of extra knowledge over us plebs.
@@anthonyhamlin1078 would love to look into this. Isle of Wight connected to loads historically.
