As a young black teen with my own mental health issues, I’ve decided to become a psychologist & therapist. I always felt I had no where to turn because everyone stigmatized mental illness. I’ve seen my own best friends struggle far too long & I want to make this world better. Starting from inside.

I'll never forget the day I told my mom that I was depressed, experiencing suicidal ideation, and wanted to see a therapist, and she responded "Why do you want something to be wrong with you so badly?" That was more than 10 years ago, and although I do see a therapist now and am doing so much better than I was at age 11, I still think about and am hurt by what my mom said to me all those years ago.

After one of my therapist told my mother that I was suicidal she was really angry with me. It was like she took it personally. When we got home from the outpatient she kept asking aggressively/screaming at me if I wanted to kill myself and when I finally broke down and said yes she screamed at me "well then kill yourself!"
I never opened up to a therapist again after that but she continued to waste money on therapy I wouldn't utilize & guilt trip me for it. She says i make up a lot of the shirt I call her out on. My environment was a big part of the problem and therapy can't enable a child to change their environment. I struggle with the idea of spending money on a therapist now. Even though I'm an adult the thought makes of me opening up to someone I pay to listen to me leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Adrian 91 This is what diversity means to some. Say you want diversity but only concern yourself with your race. It’s self centered and not inclusive at all. I noticed that this segment mentions Latinos in passing but doesn’t go into detail. This has happened numerous times on so-called diverse shows, progressive news channels, media representation and political representation. Ask any one of these proponents about Latino, Asian or Native American famous historical figures and they will draw a blank but expect you to digest only African American history as the representative of diversity. I can name 30 African Americans for every single Latino or Native American that they know. This is deceptive and raising your voice on these matters is important. Not very inclusive if you ask me.

I come from some pretty impoverished areas, so it surprises me that I have come across so many black male therapists and counselors in the past 15 years. I have PTSD from sexual abuse by my stepfather who was a black man, and for years I felt like a Terrible racist person because I had to change therapists 3 times because they assigned me to a black male after I explained that I have trouble talking about those traumas with someone who reminds me of my abuser when you have PTSD, even the vaguest resemblance of a stranger to your abuser can trigger flashbacks, but it is terrifying when the person triggering you is the person you are supposed to be opening up to about those things. I am a very kind and loving person and I try very hard to make sure that I judge people on their heart and not what the shell looks like. I wish that some of you were able to have met the therapists and counselors I have been assigned in the past, because they were wonderful people, I just was not able to see them due to personal trauma. There are SO many ethnicities it can get long to name them all. But to be fair, from all I have read Native Americans face far more social inequalities then any other minority group. The black culture gets the most attention, probably because we frame ethnic disparities in "black and white" even though we know our inequality problems in this country is far more diverse. Personally I think we need to get away from color coding the human race.

@Meg Big difference between a relationship acting as a buffer and actually trying to get into a relationship for the purpose of dealing with depression. Usually the buffer comes from the mutual support in a healthy relationship, whereas what I meant is more just trying to get into the relationship so that the supply of dopamine that comes with having self-worth which is an unhealthy way of dealing with depression, especially as it tends to lead to break-ups which can worsen depression.

We'd like to take more direct action in our students' lives but the consequences for doing so are too harsh.

The Bible says you cannot possibly take on burdens by yourself, so it is way easier to give your problems to God and let Him handle them. Not specifically Jesus. It's more complicated than most people think. It is blasphemous to think that God cannot deal with any problem, because the entire point of believing in Him is so you don't make a god of yourself or any other person/object. An example would be money. Money can solve some problems, it can be a god to some. But God can solve ALL problems as long as you allow Him to. That is what most people don't understand. Having to do with mental health however, it is not a mystery that from time to time we need help from another human to help us analyse the flaws taking place in out lives and what connection mental heath has with those problems. It is not ethical to say that mental heath doesn't exist. There is a term we Christians use to refer to our earthly state: flesh. As long as we're in our flesh we will have evil thoughts and we will do evil things. But the self control and restraint to do them is what God admires. My point is, if you need help mentally, ask God to send a person who will confide in you and respect your feelings. THERE IS NO SHAME IN ASKING FOR HELP.

Seeing this video, I can tell you that emotion recognition is a universal problem. As a species, we are afraid of emotions. We do not express them, we do not want to feel them, we do not want to show them validation. Culture indeed has a huge impact and smaller communities have bigger problems due to everyone knowing everyone. So, there are no therapists that understand someone's context, culture, worries, and then that someone is in a community that is given limited action to therapy and mental health care or is discriminated, that person may find it difficult to ask for help. I live in a small community and this is a huge problem. That was a very interesting video, keep it up!
