In the comics Blade is considered a master swordsman and in real life Wesley Snips is a bona fide martial artist with black belts in Hapkido and Shotokan karate so I have a pretty good feeling that Wesley can probably handle a sword in real life he also choreographed most of the fight scenes for this movie. There is also an Marvel anime version of the Blade that was released just before this movie back in the late 90's. The anime version of Blade used 3 deadly sword techniques Residual Moon, Phantom Moon and Chaotic Moon. All of which i think would look very cool on screen but I have a feeling we won't see anything like that in the upcoming MCU version of Blade next year ( Hopefully next year. Word is production has shutdown for the time being )

Blade did not take the Ann Rice path for vampires. Blade wanted us to fear, hate, and not want to be a vampire. Also, As you mentioned, The Matrix came out a year later. As good as The Matrix is, Blade influenced The Matrix.

This is the movie that began the process of creating Marvel Studios. Marvel Studios tried to run with this with LL Cool J in the main role but ended up passing it to New Line Cinema. Wesley Snipes at the time was trying to get a Black Panther movie in development. There were a number of people New Line wanted to play in the movie but came to this cast. Even though Marvel Studio dropped out it did help in building the organization that would eventually grow up in the 2000s.
First black superheroes in the movies goes: The Meteor Man 1993, Blankman 1994, Steel 1997, Spawn 1997 then Blade. Blade could be considered first of the modern superhero movies along with XMen. This would not be Blaxploitation but some of the people who worked with Wesley Snipes were from the genre. During the late 90s Jackie Brown and Original Gangstas would be in that genre. The 2000s was marked with Pootie Tang being the first in the new era. The Harder They Fall is the latest one out.

Hi Jaby, I'll be hitting 50 next month. The first black hero from the comics that comes to mind for me was Luke Cage AKA Power Man. And that was in the 1970's. He was more of an anti-hero type character. He was "A Hero for hire". Blade is a character who hates vampires. For me I didn't feel a black spoliation type film. I think you have to keep in mind it was the era of action film making that didn't have a ton of great action fight choreography like we do today in modern film making. The dialog is cheesy like many comic movies pre-marvel studios era. It fit the times IMO.🤙

Sure, there were Punisher and Captain America films in the early 90s, but they were small films that were seen mainly on home video. Blade also began the Marvel film blitz. No, this isn't Blaxploitation. It doesn't exploit black people and there isn't any stereotyping. Those movies were made by black directors and producers for black audiences. Even though they are thought to be offensive, it was a way to speak out against society's idea that Blacks were inferior. It showed Blacks as fearless protagonists in a white dominated world. If you Google a list of them and watch some, they all mostly seem to have this underlying theme to them.
There were several other "Black Superhero" movies before Blade, not well noted or taken serious, and not really good, but they existed. Meteor Man, Blankman, Steel, and of course Spawn

Actually, I hadn't thought about it that way but there are certain blaxploitation tropes in Blade. It is pretty much Shaft if Shaft fought Vampires and didn't fuck(because Shaft definitely fucks lol)
And if you're gonna watch Spawn DON'T watch the movie, watch the animated TV show, MUCH better

What I like about this beyond Wesley Snipes just being baddass, honoring an already dope character is the world it inhabits..has hints of clans or covens or in other words a Vampire Nation, feels distantly Vampire: The Masquerade. Just reminded me at the time of "The Kindred" which was an attempt at making a show based on VTM. Anne Rice's stuff probably influenced both things on some level so if you ever want to venture down Vampire road, check out her works. All in all, very removed from the well known Dracula stuff.

Fun fact it's this movie that made Blade a half vampire. Up until the movie he only had immunity to vampire bites and stuff like that but didn't have the super strength and vampire powers. But because of the movie the character was changed to the half vampire. I think they used morbius in the comics for that

    • @mnomadvfx

I enjoyed seeing all three Blade movies movies, but the first two were my favorites. I felt it was two many people, plot lines and attempts at various types of humor in Blade Trinity which made the plot go into many directions. Jaby to answer your question I didn't think of Blade as a Blaxpolitation movie. However Wesley Snipes definitely embodied a strong Black male badass, perhaps more so than any movie he made before.
I was in my early teens and didn't actually watch the movies until my mid twenties. However, I recommend these movies especially the ones with Pam Grier that were my favorites (I'm a Black woman in my early 60's now). Three the Hard Way, Black Caesar,
Shaft, Coffey, Friday Foster and Cleopatra Jones with Pam Grier from 1973-1975. Pam was also in Jackie Brown in 1997 directed by Tarantino which was a modern take on the genre.
Enjoy you and your colleagues have been watching for several years. Lastly, watch Eddie Murphy and Angela Bassett on Vampire in Brooklyn from 1995. Angela looks beautiful and ageless. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤️

A lot of the design is from Tim Bradstreet who wasn't credited for the first movie but brought on for the others. And some theme's come from Vampire The Masquerade. Which since I'm an 80s kid I can't talk about. The 90s is sort of the lost decade for a reason.

I think Donal Logue was a great cast member, very entertaining, as was Eric Edwards as Pearl, the very sedentary research vampire. N'Bushe Wright held her own with Wesley & Kris.

they never say why they only go for blade but my theory is that blade is probably the only baby to survive. they said it was like a virus unless you were born a vampire so imagine a baby getting a powerful virus like that it would most likely kill them or at least they would die during delivery so blade is most likely the only one to survive and they were probably looking for him ever since to wait for him to reach maturity to be able to perform the ritual with him.
