I was a meat cutter for 25 years and have a love affair with knives, (what guy doesn't!) and am addicted to "Forged in Fire". I have collected 40 to 50 lbs. of railroad spikes. This would be great to start learning the craft
I really am impressed with this particular unit 😊 And for the price I don't think anything else is going to compare .
Railroad spikes are good practice, but they don't make the best knives (the steel barely hardens)
How did you go about collecting railroad spikes?
@@jerryjordan1448 I live in an area where the Philly passenger train used to stop here in Quakertown, PA and continue to Allentown. The rail system hasn't been used for 40 years, so I walked the tracks and just started to pick them up. Also found a piece of rail about 30" long. Great for hammering on!!
@@maverick5006 Thanks
Just when I thought it couldn't get better... Roy you're the absolute best! My friends got me one of these little guys for Christmas and having you walk us through putting it together is so ideal! Thank you!!
I bought one of these a couple months ago for $75.00. It does an awesome job! Great little forge at an unbeatable price!
Thanks very much for taking time to put a video together on this forge. I really like these short review series with the lower end anvils and now the forge. Thanks again...
These things even get hot enough to weld. They really did their homework on these forges. A couple extra fire bricks and some stainless hardware and the things are nearly perfect.
Forge welding in one is next on my to-do list 😊
Yes it does...just did my 1st 2 layer forge weld last weekend.
Yeah the only issue that I found with them is a refractory could be thicker which you would want to make the forge a bit thicker to accommodate, so like you can get about a quarter inch of refractory on it but you want at least about a half inch in ideal situation. The one other thing is a burner could be moved up more center of that plate instead of at the bottom of that plate, the reason why they did that is so that the flame hits and wraps around and creates like a vortex but when you put the brick in the bottom it disrupts that vortex so if they were to lift the burner up about halfway or so it would efficiently make that vortex because the flame would be hitting the brick and not the edge of the brick if that makes any sense, maybe one day they'll revise it but the forge is good enough for the price and in fact it's very very good for the price
They used to sell it with a differently designed valve assembly, and the wire braided hose. I have that one - unfortunately when I went to fire it up the other day, I did the soapy water spray bottle test on it and the coupling at the regulator with the hose was bubbling away. Promptly turned it off and emailed Mr. Volcano up with photos. They asked for my address and are sending a replacement hose and regulator. Probably be the current rubber one that they sell, but great customer service!
That's good to know! Thank you for watching
Dude i think i seen your review on amazon
Haha, I know which one you’re talking about, but that wasn’t me. They sent the hose out yesterday apparently though, so that was quick!
Damn I have the same issue with the same hose/regulator. Going to have to contact them as well
They’ll send you a new one. The one that they sent as a replacement even had the same issue as well, and they sent yet another one when I contacted them again. The third one doesn’t have the issue, but I could see eventually buying a premium third party option for the hose and regulator. Again though, really great customer service!
I recieved this model as a Christmas gift from my beautiful wife. I wanted to watch a video to affirm I was correct in my assembly as this is my first forge and exposure to blacksmithing. I wanted to thank you for your information and compliment you on your positive energy. So....thank you.
I just bought this same forge - it is in the garage with the rigidizer drying. I am a rank beginner, so I’m very relieved to hear your positive review.
I also really appreciate your willingness to share so much of your experience with beginners. Because of COVID and my autoimmune disorder, remote learning (videos and such) is the only way I have to learn new things right now. Thanks for all your help!
Very welcome Kelly and glad to have you as part of our blacksmithing community ☺️ welcome!
I just got the same one already made a few things it's really nice
Did you take the shot/s Kelly?
@@forthework1473 Yes! Got my shots and my booster. Unfortunately, I don’t have the same immune response as most people, so I still have to be very careful.
@@forthework1473 There’s nothing genetic in the vaccine, my dear. I’m nearly 60 years old - I’m as grateful that God gave us this vaccine as I am for inoculations against polio, measles, smallpox, and all the other dreadful diseases of my childhood that folks don’t have to worry about today. And bringing the subject back to blacksmithing, don’t forget to wear your respirator and hearing protection! ❤️
I bought the same set in December. Pretty happy with it. Anyone who is just starting out, this forge is a good place to start. Make sure to leak test the hose, mine had a leak, but Mr.Volcano sent me a new one right away after I contacted them. Really good customer service.
I have been doing blacksmithing for about a year. I made my first forge, and it held up fairly well for my first, but this was an upgrade.
I received a Ovel Mr Valcano double burner forge for Christmas. Easy to assemble. Great instructions. It came with Ball valves. And stainless hose. Simple and easy. And I truly love it. Yes it will reach welding temp.
I have the big brother of this, and no complaints so far! Great beginning forge!
I bought their 2 burner unit . I'm pretty new but I was impressed with unit haven't gotten to use it much as the rest of my shop is still being assembled.
Thanks for your efforts.
My son wanted to try making knives, so I bought this kit for him, we had the best time putting it together.. He is learning. Making his own tongs and tools (learning process). Thanks for the good reviews on this kit.. Oh and if he enjoys this we will build a bigger forge..
I got one for Christmas and I love it. It is a beginner forge in my opinion, but that is all that I need.
Bought, assembled and forging with Mr.Volcano my sons bought me for Father's day last year. You know you wish your kids where that cool. 😎 excited to see Roy use the same. Really hoping for forge welding ( I have Roy's just released forge welding to view still)
I'm hoping to have a welding video on It here soon 😊 thanks Daniel for watching
I looked at these last summer and then they went out of stock. That is the best review of one that I have seen. Most of the reviews I watched were by people that didn't understand using a forge.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video 🙂 hopefully they will keep them in stock this year 🙏
Thank you folks for excellent content, and being such generous and wonderful people! Hearts and health :D
Nice little forge. Thank you for everything you do.
Thank you Wayne ❤️
New content is looking good man. Nice work
I just picked one up. Can’t wait to use it.
I have this forge, and after replacing the 20psi regulator with a 30psi, it works great.
Great review Roy! I've been bouncing around with the idea of getting a gas forge. Followed your link. It will be here this Saturday! Thanks a million!!!
Awesome thanks so much for the support 🙂
@@ChristCenteredIronworks I tried using the link last week and it didn't work. It went to the the right page, but when I clicked "add to cart" I got a message saying "page not found". :-( So I searched on Amazon and ordered it that way.
Roy very nice video review on that forge. Can't wait to see more videos soon Roy and Jess. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friends. Forge on. Keep making. God bless.
God bless you brother thanks 🙏
In contrast to some of the people making comments, I actually have one of these forges and feel I can make an accurate assessment of its usefulness. In my humble opinion, this little forge is GREAT! I have been using mine several times a week for a couple months now and I have not had any problems with it. Obviously, it is not very large so I use mine to make J-hooks, S-hooks, tomahawk heads, belt buckles, etc. It easily gets hot enough to forge weld. If you're making bigger stuff this is not going to work. For the average hobbyist blacksmith, this thing will do what you need AND do it for under $100!
wow, i could barely contain my excitement as he showed us how to open the boxes.
LoL the best part of any video 😉
I have one coming to me this Friday actually. I can't wait.
Cool little forge! Would really be interested in seeing you get it in operation. Thanks for sharing.
As far as the valve handle...
You should be able to turn that 90 degrees to make it function like you want
Just got one for Christmas. Can’t wait to put it to good use.
Awesome hope it works out well for you ☺️
Hey I bought and tested for 3 weeks, amazing little guy. Don't know specifics, but for someone new it's the perfect little metal heater
Looks like a sweet little set up Roy
Thank you Darren 😊
Howdy brother. Didn't care much about the video, but was scrollin through and saw it and the channel name. Had to give ye a shout out on it. Great name! Have a goodun ✝️🇺🇸🤠
my dad and I have the 2 burner, added some extra refractory brick to close off the back and add a part shelf in front. it runs very nice, and coating has held up over 2 months of usage.
You really are a awesome guy to do these videos for all of us. I am new aswell to blacksmithing and am very grateful for you sharing your wisdom i have learned and am learning alot from you God bless.
God bless you and welcome to the blacksmith community ☺️
I just got one for Christmas. Can't wait to use it

Just got one for Christmas!
I’m liking the big face rug! I did same. Going for the John Calvin look. I did the fancy multicolored two tone salt and pepper model 😂
Good review, and I am really glad you brought up the spot welded burner collars. I have the double burner model, and while it works fine, the collars both broke loose after just a few months and had to be rewelded down. That was really frustrating. A couple bolts before I had put it all together would have been exactly the thing as you recommend, as it was a lot harder to do with a constructed and used forge.
Thanks for the great video. I appreciate the pros and cons.
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Great review Roy. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it ☺️
It is, what it is. Be good for a hobbyist starting out. I would recommend a better regulator in the 0-30 psi range, for better heat control. Thanks for the review, I'm sure it will be a good entry level gas forge for many people wanting to try their hand at forging metal.
Awesome, just ordered mine a few days ago.
I got this forge and an acciaio 40kilo anvil for Christmas. Honestly for under $300 everything was shipped to door, you can't beat it for a beginner.
I bought one of these for quick projects where you don't want to manage a coal fire, and find that it works great. On mine, the valve handle IS in line with the burner.
Good review and great to know the "basic" forge I wanted to get is solid. Would love to see a followup with improvements.
I followed the Refractory instructions to the "T". After 3/4 used the entire inside started to scallop. So bummed now. Going to try and peel it all off and buy a different Refractory cement in hopes of getting a longer lasting line. Great video.
Great review and THANK YOU for the advice on adding screws to the burner holder prior to assembly. Much Appreciated - in Christ - Steve
I have a Majestic 3 burner deluxe, which currently is being borrowed by another person who does smithing. I usually only need one burner for most jewelry projects. I saw good reviews on this one and it's super light. I could see this being the Year if the Forge now lol.
It is the year of the forge now 😉 thanks for the comment And watching
Recommend you do not leave unused burners in place. Didn't use 2nd burner for over a year; wouldn't work when I tried to light. Had to remove nozzle and ream with .030 welding wire. Still not getting good burn.
That's right bud I started 40 plus years ago and just use a two burner febtech now it seems to do really good job
Thanks for this video. I shared it with a friend who has a daughter who wants to learn the trade.
I just finished the curing process and I made my first tongs out of rebar!
Awesome to hear that 😊
Thanks for this review
Very welcome 🙂
Picked up one of them as well. Still getting it put together but with any luck hope to have it going soon. I think they may have messed up on mine though as the regulator I got with it is for a 2 burner forge. No big deal as I have been building my own gas forges for a number of years now so I will just use one of the regulators I already have and will save this for a 2 burner that I have in the works. I do know what you mean about the price of gas forges "back in the day". That is what started me building my own.
Great video.
You earned a new sub today

Awesome thanks for watching And subscribing!
Sweet. Im not a blacksmith but this forge is cheap enough a person could probably justify the cost just to have it around to heat whatever they wanted up in it. Enjoyed the few videos ive watched of yours today (just found your channel today)
I purchased my one for my son for a Christmas present, we're waiting until the weather breaks to build a 3 wall shed to use it in, got it on prime for 77.97 it must of been on sale at the time
Looks like. Nifty lol feller!
Oooh yeah nut n bolt minimum. Great point
God bless n see ya back here soon!
Crawford out 🙏🔥⚒️🧙🏼♂️
Wow I was wondering if those were any good. Thanks Roy!
Very welcome 😁
Looks like your hacker is back
I’ve been looking at getting one of these for tool making. Looks like I’ll get one and do a few mods on it to get it up to speed.
Great review.
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Thats what I use mine for. It does a great job.
@@JDST-7341q Thanks for the input.
i been looking at one of these to replace my microwave in the kitchen, the stainless will look great, might need to put a door or two on it to keep the kitties out
Have you tried doing a sunday roast in it yet.....................Happy New Year guys
Somebody got fancy with the editing 👀
I'm super Glad someone noticed 🙂 thanks Eli 😉
These seem like they could be modular. Bolt on some latches and create a 2-4 burner forge.
Might be a great concept to try out ☺️
Thank you for this video. I built a forge similar to the small one you built with no firepot for taking with you a few years ago. it works great for me. mine's powered with a hair dryer. I've even made a few forge welds with it. I sell a lot of hooks and things on etsy. Do you think that I would be able to increase production using this gas forge and if so would the increase in production be more than enough to pay for the additional cost of the propane.Thank you so much for all you do, I'm looking forward to building one of your power hammers. You really are a blessing Roy.
Nicholas yes it will increase production at a fair cost to production ratio if you are mindful of the amount of pressure your running things At. If you go full blast it's going to get hot quick but also suck the gas.. if you run low pressure It will take longer time to heat but sip your gas. It's always a balance And it's up to you to decide 🙂
@@ChristCenteredIronworks Thank you a bunch!
A couple of stainless rivets to hold the burner collar on should be an easy post build fix for broken spot welds.
I bought one about a month ago, since then I've been too sick to get it put together and working.
This video will help a lot when I can get to it and great tips on bolting parts together, thank you!
P.S. I've read/seen in several places that it needs a 30 PSI regulator to really work well.
What do you think about combining two of them to get some more length?
I got that same forge my kids got it for me for Christmas getting a scale to weight out the satiate
just bought one for my son we will see how well it works ? i love all the info also has anyone ever used it for making knives out of railroad ties? thats what he wants to start out doing
Thanks for the review and tips. Putting in the stainless screws is a great idea. Ordered one of these, but it was stopped at the Canadian border. I don't know why?🤔😪
Looking at getting 1 similar with dual burners and double doors.
Sold off the rig welding trailer to smack on hot metal at home. 17 years of welding I just want to be left alone in the garage on the weekends.
I have the larger two burner version. Really enjoying it, but I have had a hard time getting the gas set right. I'd appreciate it if you could do a video on that.
Thanks!
I'll do my best 🙂 thanks for watching
I still say that you should review the harbor freight 15 pound cast iron anvil. It served me well until I could get a new one, and I would love to see your take on it.
I'll get around to it I'm sure 😊
Recommend that you advise customers to wear at least some sort of mask when opening and forming the kao wool product because it is HIGHLY dangerous if particles are inhaled - and the particles are released by just opening it up and forming it into the forge cavity. But, otherwise, this was pretty helpful information. I would have liked to see you showing the assembly process in more detail.
I bought one when it was 80 bucks haven't put it together yet because I just moved into a house but I'm going to put it together soon
I bought this exact forge about 5 months ago for $75...... The best $75 i ever spent. with a couple of firebricks in the back and one brick covering in the front brings it up to welding heat.....
Great to hear 😊
@@ChristCenteredIronworks Been subscribed and following you for quite a while now and learned plenty
Happy New Year
I usually look at the orientation of the valve handle in relation to the inlet side.
Don't mig it Roy and stick weld it. You can pick up stainless steel rods and you won't cause corrosion issues. Nice little forge that there look forward to seeing what you get up to with it.
I'll have to get them for sure 🙂 thanks Dan for dropping by 🙏
Ordered mine late last week; arrived today.
Do you think it would work to braze the burner port into place? I don't know how to weld and have a feeling that if I try to bore holes for fasters, I'll end up breaking the tack welds. The instructions say the shell can get as hot as 600°F in operation, well below the 840°F needed for brazing.
For your spot welds just drill some holes and use stainless pop rivets to work excellent
Honest question, and I'm sorry if you've gotten this question before, but I've only had experience with a coal forge for blade smithing, and I'm interested in trying my hand at forge welding, which I have not been able to do with much success. I recently messed around with some firebrick and a propane torch, and was able to get a weak forge weld on some single edge razor blades, and that made me thirsty for more. I just got some birthday funds and I'm considering buying one of these forges. Do you think the single burner will be hot enough to forge weld successfully, or would the two burner model be a better choice for me? I plan on forging blades that are 3" all the way up to about 20". Please advise if I'm being too ambitious. Love the channel, and God Bless.
i think it looks kinda nice for just starting out iv wanted to try smithing this could let me do some small stuff to just mess around with,
just got my anvil today my friend had a old forge i could use but the liner needs replaced and i dunno how to do it on his so im just going to buy this looks way easier
Just bought one for being able to heat treat knives
Would it be possible to run two of these forges in a line for longer work pieces or would it heat too unevenly? I have been thinking about getting into blacksmithing for a few years now. Currently I’m teaching myself to weld.
What about stainless rivets? You could prolly set the collar as is and straight up! Great video!😎👍👍
Sure probably could do that ☺️
I'm wanting to get into blacksmithing and was wondering, would you recommend this forge for beginners?
After seeing this video, i had to wait almost 6weeks for them to get back in stock. Mine was delivered today. Would you recommend hard or soft fire brick to block off the open ends?
I have seen several others smiths using that forge and have wondered if it was even a viable option, I am interested to see how it hold up
Mine came with a different style burner and it seems to overheat when the forge gets hot the flame goes up the burner and goes out do I have it to far in or out any ideas? I have a braided hose on the way
I have one. The valve on mine is opposite of what you said. In general valves are closed when the knob is perpendicular to the valve (not to the input line as you said). That is how mine is.
Thank you for sharing that Glenn... Like I said I like the orientation to be More easily understood At a distance ... But then again that might just be My Old HVAC days creeping back in LoL. Inspectors ruined me 🤪
@@ChristCenteredIronworks I understand what you say about the gas valve handle. The antique engines I play with of 100+ years have the handles just the opposite of today's standard. Now that handle on your gas valve maybe taken off and rotated 90 degrees. 👍🙏
I just bought that one and it was delivered a few days ago and I haven’t had time to unbox it yet
I think you'll like it 😊
I have one too. Only complaint is the thumbscrews and how little thread there is for them.
@@ChristCenteredIronworks I bought it as a travel forge and it’s my first commercially made forge my other 2 are homemade Frankenforges
Did it come with parts list or address to get parts? Had plugged nozzle after not using installed 2nd burner for over a year. Cleaned with .030 Welding tip; lights but not burning well. Regular welding tips do not fit.
I got the slightly bigger two burner forge as a gift. My stainless steel case got a little beat up in shipping. A pop rivetter put everything snug. I had to straighten some of the metel but nothing major. In the process of drying the ridgedizer I blocked off the ends with the fire bricks....dang does that forge get hot, I kinda wondered if it got to forge welding temps. What I'm realizing is two burners are not necessarily better than one. I'm not better having two, I just burn twice as nuch propane. Theoreticaly I can heat longer pieces...but I'm not there yet. The two burner may be good, but there are real benefits to the single burner.
I used to think the mark up was high and that a cheaper one could be made in my shop until I started looking at the components online. I can't believe the company is making very much money off these or I'm seriously shopping at the wrong store.
The customer service of the Mr. Volcano company is top shelf. For this alone I am a return customer. When contacted, about the shipping issues, the company made it right. They are a fantastic company, and produce a nice product at a very fair price.
Can you put two together for double burner and mig weld sorry for newbie questions
I know that the instructions are only the manufacturers opinion of how to build it ........ but it is nice to see a "pro" both use them and recommend others to!
For $80 I imagine corners needed to be trimmed down to within an inch of their lives ..... You get what you pay for and you pay for what you get! What additions would you put on this forge other than the ones you mentioned?
I would say it is a good video ..... but they are ALL good! ;o)
Thank you for the kind words ☺️ for additions I will most likely buy some ITC 100 to coat it with And might change the regulator out for one with a pressure gauge (not needed) just so I can see the actual pressure I'm running At.. Thank you for watching
I was thinking of getting one of these good review and if you say it’s good for the money I’ll probably get it. This will be my first not homemade one
That's a pretty sweet deal honestly
Thank you for watching And all your support 🙂
@@ChristCenteredIronworks Anytime 😁
It’s a box in the box.. made the same joke to my 5yr old😂
I use bagged coal with a hair dryer works great very inexpensive the propane , man that stuff gets expensive that thing will suck up propane like crazy
I’m at 6700+ feet altitude. How do they work at high altitudes? I have used gas forges at this altitude, and you have to push high pounds and is that regulator capable. I do want a second forge
My forge cracked when it dried any pointers on how i should fix that?
