    Can you harden a HF anvil, can you forge weld in mr volcano,
    Another great episode of blacksmithing-busters.

      Pretty sure HF anvil's ard made from cast iron which isn't going to get very hard. You probably could forge weld with a Mr volcano just be aware that you will need to reline it more frequently if you do.

      I have one of these forges and I've made a number of tomahawks by bending and forge welding farrier rasps. Works great and I love this little forge. The only negative is you can't do larger projects, but I use my coal forge for those, so it's not a big problem.

    I have now used my little Mr. Volcano Hero forge a couple times now since getting it a few days and I absolutely love it. I plan on trying to make a small billet of damascus with it tomorrow. I'm fairly confident that it'll get hot enough for it. I really appreciate all your reviews on it and the continued testing and such as it was that that really made me pull the trigger and get one. I'm glad I did. For the money you can't go wrong. I just make custom knives and for that purpose it'll be about all I need. I have a little bit bigger forge if I ever make any swords but for now I don't plan on it. I just can't get over how well made the little hero forge is and everything you get with it for less than a hundred bucks. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better deal.

      I can’t say specifically to this forge but my home one I found it roughly halved the time it took to get to temp and added about 100C to the upper temp. It’s worth adding IMO.

    That’s a great video of your forge welding set-up. I had no idea an IR gun could measure those temperature levels. Do you think the IR gun is actually more accurate in measuring forge temperature than the k-type thermocoupler given it’s measuring IR reflectivity from the refractory coatings (are you using IT -100 on the firebricks?). Also what is the max measurement rating if the thermocouole?

    Where would I find fire brick that is rated over 2500°? Or is that something I should just be looking for online somewhere? Think I really love the Mr volcano forge thinking about getting one for some of the smaller projects I do and replace the single burner I made which works but the Mr volcano seems cleaner and hold some larger projects.

    What temperature do you recommend forging at? Also, how heavy of a hammer do you think I should use for standard forging? (I am 14 years old so I probably couldn't handle a hammer more than 6 or 7 pounds) Does it just depend on what I am comfortable using? God bless, have an awesome day. :D

    • @a2c340

      @@theoldenbrick2466 For smaller stock like 1/4", practicing Nails and Leafs and hooks etc and to planish larger work 2 lbs is plenty, actually. You will be able to forge a LOT longer and with more fun than with a hammer too large. Just make sure to smooth the corners and edges of a hardware store hammer, they mess up the looks of your work.

    • @allenkennedy4555
      @allenkennedy4555 2 года назад +6

      Don't go over a 2lb hammer maybe use 1 1/2lb til you build yourself up .
      Anything over 2lb hammer work should be sledgehammer work .
      Don't blow your arm out just because you can.

      I agree about the 2-2.5 lb hammer. Adding velocity increases force more than adding weight. (Energy = mass x velocity squared)

    I’ve got the same lazer thermometer and always wondered how accurate they are. Not sure why I haven’t bought a k-type thermometer probe. The lazer is about 90* higher than my evenheat oven. But that’s only around 1500-1600. It says my forge gets over 2700*, which it does get very hot going by color. Mild steel and wrought iron have no problem welding in it.
    Like to see what mr. Volcano does with both ends blocked up and as high as it will run properly.

    Hi Roy I have a question this might sound a bit stupid to ask but will larger bits of steel be hotter in the solid fuel forge and be more easily forged as aposed to the gas forge or dose it not really matter that much

    Those blue pyrometers put out 2 lasers typically. When they are aligned it as at the correct Temperature vs the laser being spread. Fun fact. Good stuff tho. Makes me want to put mine on a tripod for giggles. Should be about 36 inches. If memory serves on the manuals. What handheld do you have for the k type?

    @HighDesertForgeIronworks 2 года назад

    very good video! 2400-ish degrees... that should be "welding temp", Right??
    Umm. . . ✋QUESTION Roy: don't you need to adjust the air gate "thingy" that controls how much air gets into the burner? Like if you add more gas pressure doesn't that make the flame burn richer and not a "neutral flame" anymore? 🤔 Hmmm 🤔

    • @redneksoldier2004
      @redneksoldier2004 2 года назад +1

      Not necessarily. It all depends on burner design. Some will go richer and some will go leaner as you increase the pressure. The velocity of the gas traveling down the burner tube actually draws the air in through the opening and creates a pretty strong suction. Admittedly, I do not own this forge, so hopefully Roy will comment here with what he learned about this one.
