How it use to be done. The 6 point end on a spark plug sockets is just a wrench extension. Literally for the use of a wrench when the spark plug is recessed down. Or you can use a ratchet on it multipurpose.

Chad and Jolene, do yourselves a favor and consult Nate on this engine . With all the investment you have in this great car . It'll be worth it in the long run.
Chad, you need to take a little time to RUclips about those spark plugs etc. The spark plugs are two piece units, look carefully down the hole and you will see the ground portion of the spark plug. If a cylinder takes any more than 1/2 a cup it is probably getting past exhaust valves and into the exhaust manifold, pipes etc. Do not put the plugs back in until you have rolled it over many times, as you probably now have one or more cylinders that will hydra lock (will bend the rods) I suggest you put rags over the plug holes the first time you roll it over otherwise someone is getting a bath in dirty deisel. Stand to one side Jolene. You will need to change the oil and drain the exhaust system before starting. You also need new plug wires, yours are obviously rotten and possibly grounding inside the tubes. All that being said, call in a competent mechanic, if that means swallowing your pride, well swallow it and call NATE.
Note; You have a two piece spark plug and you are only removing the inner part. There is still a outer part of the plug that is remaining in the cylinder head. A 7//8 ".
