BAFTA winning Grand Designs is widely recognised as the pre-eminent series on modern architecture and design in Britain. It was originally conceived as a documentary series presented by designer and writer Kevin McCloud that takes us into the heart of life’s great unfolding human stories, where ordinary families risk all to experiment with architecture, technology, and their own lifestyle.
Now in its 17th year, Grand Designs is one of Channel 4’s biggest returnable factual series and has grown into a global phenomenon, selling in over 100 territories. Apart from the TV series, the Grand Designs brand has also expanded to include books, a monthly magazine, architectural awards and a biannual exhibition, Grand Designs Live.

We never get to see the end of the good ones...how about some revisits please Kevin..eg did the guy who was building his super sized mud brick house ever finish it? Or the hippy couple who were building theirs and their kids had grown up and probably moved out..or this one. Loved the light it was amazing!!! That was one amazing lady to live in the caravan with her little children and never complain..."we will miss this when we move..." Personally I love caravan living but without children fulltime. Most people cant wait to get out.

Had to laugh forget the architect and have his wife design it through meditation. Love it. And I love that they are working with the old barn. Could they have used something other than cement? Isn't there a kind of concrete or some such that absorbs CO 2 rather than giving it off. Forget what it is called. I wish they had been able to finish the Castle in France . Love the earthiness of this.!!!

I would love to hear what electricians and plumbers would have to say when this guy calls them non specialist trades. I wonder what sort of state his electrical and plumbing wS in when the house was finished, if it ever was finished. I have met many English people like him in France. Grand ideas with no idea or skill or budget to support it.

      French pay rates are extortionate,
      *And* the 'artisans' often incompetent!
Every Frenchman wants to be an instant millionaire, and see brits as dumb fools.
I had one fool ''artisan'' quote me 18,000 euros for a roof job, that I'd already costed at 6k max.and eventually cost 3k!
He had a big smile when he gave me his quote.
That vanished instantly when I said *NO!*
That's why brit peoples budgets are way out when the come to france.

Fifteen minutes in: We don't have any building plans or blueprints drawn up to follow up and shockingly we found the floor is supposed to be 3 feet deeper.

@niklar55 on top of that just because you seem to think plumbing isn't important, go live without it, it's taken advantage of 100% oh and we do fuel gas in usa also as a plumber don't have to have a separate license, so your ignorance is showing through thinking plumbers are not a specialized trade I have to get a license to plumb in every state I work in, get some education, maybe in your country plumbers have a crap position, but here in USA we build 100 million dollar homes and high rises

I operated my own building and construction company in the UK for over 25 years.
ALL my work was from recommendation, I never had to advertise.
I did most of the work myself, ''from chimney pots to foundations.''
That's everything, plumbing, (gas, water, central heating, oil.). electrics, bricklaying, carpentry, tiling, roofing, welding, and wiped lead joints on electrics, and gas.etc. etc.
The bane of my life during that time was plumbers!
A lot of my work was fixing their complete f ups!
There isn't room here for me to list them all.
One job I found FOURTEEN redundant fittings between the floor and the end of a 2 foot pipe!
*I did not say that plumbing was unimportant.*
What I said was that plumbers had a reputation for being hamfisted R soles!
My 25 years experience proved that!
As for electrics', much the same.
Recently an ''electrical inspector'' wouldn't pass the electric in my sons house, because instead of ceiling roses, there were junction boxes, behind the skirting for easy access.
It was in effect, the standard system inverted. Too dumb to recognise it!
A gas plumber came to my house, and could not even use a Stillson wrench the right way around. He'd been working two years, for British Gas!
An electrician quoted $2000 (equivalent) to fix a ceiling light. It took my son 10 mins to locate the transformer, and replace it!
One customer told me he employed me, because he never needed to employ another tradesman.
During my 25 years I had zero callbacks.
I was asked if I guaranteed my work, and for how long. My answer, YES, and indefinitely! I had total confidence in my work.
I wish I could say the same for the rest of the R soles in the UK. There are similar problems in France, where I live now. Again, too long to list here!
I also did work for my cousins in Mass when I visited. Roofing, carpentry and gas. They never had a problem with my work.
I've also repaired and rebuilt car gearboxes and engines for a garage. Fixed and rebuilt fur coat ironing and cleaning machines.
I'm qualified to BSc, in engineering, and studied to MSc.
The pay for engineers in the UK was crap!
      That's why I employed myself.
      OK?

'Eco' is a strange word, agreed, but 'green' is real enough. Our home is insulated with blown-in cellulose, for example: recycled newsprint run through a hammer mills to make it fluffy. It's an excellent insulation and my wife and I have entirely abandoned fiberglass now. By the way, there are no hippies any more, and those that resemble hippies tend to be poor anyways. "Green' aficionados tend to be well educated and upper middle class.
