An impulse brought me back to the beginning...and here I am; reliving a plaid clad, bulky knit Kevin, sporting a full head of hair. An historically small screen format, and the colours of a pre-digital world, do absolutely nothing to diminish the wonderment that is the shoe string production of Grand Designs. Kevin's magical charm is most assuredly in his unwavering truth to self and frank delivery. We are immersed in the build, but wantingly revel in Kevin's caustically coined narration. And...who could deny kudos to the composer of the harp flourishing and instantly transformative intro music, that is unmistakingly and fittingly Grand in Design....
It so fun to watch Kevin McCloud presenting his very first episode on this long lasting close to the heart series. He still has hair! But I must say that he is one of these lucky fellows who has aged well. From the get go one could tell that his show was going to be a hit.
Watching this show in 2023, I am in awe of the prices. Kevin has aged extremely well, looking even better today. I know. It’s about the houses. Kevin has been a great host all these years. Would love a follow up of some of these early homes.
Right!!! Love Grand Design, and it has been interesting and cool to see the changes in materials as well as the new uses and creativity being developed with the materials. Also the various locations, the cost and time it takes to build in them, whoa 😮. It’s a great show and I love the attitudes of all the families who take on the challenges.
The start of one of the best series on TV. I loved seeing normal people doing their best on a limited budget instead of nowadays seeing the middle classes spending crazy money on houses completely unaffordable to the rest of us.
Thank you channel 4 for publishing old and newer episodes of Grand Designs here on youtube. I started watching the series on some Swedish channel a few (10?) Years ago, and Kevin McCloud is an absolutely wonderful presenter of the series. So wonderful to see many of the episodes I missed. THANKS
im from Colombia in South America, This is the only place where I can see this series, I wish we could see all the seasons in the best resolution. great work.. what a great show...
Great to see the very first episode & others from Season 1,this show with much later episodes has been on Canadian TV recently...Kevin McLoud has remained a cheerful presenter with a casual sense of humour & is the reason the show has lasted so long...it never gets old
Funny how things have changed in 20 years, how much less things cost, relative in a way, and the younger look Kevin. Smashing mate. Netflix introduced me to this show and now going through as many episodes on RUclips as I can find. Cheers.
When I was small and visited my dad in London over years I loved watching british telly and this was one of the shows I loved, it's magical. Watching the two available seasons on Netflix led me to be interested in watching it from series 1! Actually it was first aired on my birthday date!
I got hooked on this show from Netflix and RUclips suggested this episode. First thing I noticed is how much younger he was when starting the series. The second thing is his wardrobe has been upgraded since those days. Good on him.
I watched the show but not in order, now im starting it from scratch. I love how builders goes through the struggles that us real people goes through. One would think they would have foresee the hurdles of costs and everything about the house when they called the production to come shoot and share their story, but no
Haha look at younger Kevin when he had more hair!! The very first episode of Grand Designs. I started watching on RUclips about 3 years ago and was hooked but have never seen these earlier episodes from the 90's. I actually love the layout and design of this house. If the architect was on the job like he was supposed to be they wouldn't have had all these mishaps. If he couldn't be there then supply them with a property manager that worked with the company so they could be reassured especially knowing they had a deadline to meet.
Reclaimed railway sleepers - pretty much the most toxic material you can use! At least the lesson is learned here how important a well designed surrounding really is for the appearance of a house.
And then there were the kit houses built in the Midwest in the late 1800s. Beautiful 2 story victorian-inspired houses that would burn down because the kit company had purchased giant fresnel lenses on the cheap and decided to use them as a skylight over the stairs. When the summer sun shined through the fresnel, the beam was focused on the stairwell. People complained of strange scorchmarks down the stairs. Eventually the houses began to burn down. The company quickly changed out the skylights.
Now that Netflix basically made this show famous worldwide, we as the people living outside of Britain, we deserve a right to watch every episode. Channel 4 doesn't let me watch from my country which sucks.
Hi, it is a wonderful series and I enjoy watching. I am from Mexico and one year ago I watched it in Netflix, but now I can't. Could you tell me what streaming platform can I watch it on? Please!
It's one thing he's so much younger but his voice sounds a fair bit posher as well, haha. Fun to see the beginning of the naive optimism of the many self builders to follow in this couples footsteps.
As an ex pom living n QLD Australia we have a lot of glass and veranda's and will live sorta outside most of the year, but we have lots of sun LOTS OF SUN. But not that much glass in a cold country, so heating will be exspensive very exspensive.
An interesting house, to be sure, but with 5 kids, a real "Yours, Mine, and Ours" proposition on a vastly smaller scale, 3 bedrooms sounds a bit sparse, even if 4 are part time. He should be glad he isn't here. Footings have to be down a full 2 metres and foundations SHOULD continue up at least a foot above grade. 2 or even 3 feet is not uncommon to allow full 8 foot ceilings in the basement. I just saw the house they demolished! That derelict house was a beauty! It would have been easy to modify it within the footprint to turn it into a gorgeous home. Better for the environment, too. That old double fronted home could be truly lovely. Start with big bay windows in both front rooms facing the view on both floors. The rest would be dead easy to make truly special. I hate seeing old homes with history robbed of their future.
God, what a treat to see this 20 odd, years later. Sadly, all that wonderful, colour and richness has now, likely, been changed into the usual, modern, boring, bland, white and washed out colours of today. I'd take this place as is, any day, compared to the modern, boring, shit of the past two decades. Hopefully, people will embrace colour and richness again, as it's long, long, overdue now. My Retro/Vintage Best. Out.
I feel so sorry for this family, their dreams were totally unrealistic and their finances were stretched to breaking point. I don’t think they thought this project through sufficiently, however the house came up nicely.
It was really quite a boringly normal house. Large but not pointlessly so considering but already had 5 children. It's not nearly as large as many later participants would have thought necessary for smaller families. be interesting to see it now. How did the make do landscaping hold up? Did they ever build the fireplace they replaced with a door? How's the baby doing at college?
I’ve got a love/hate relationship with Kevin, when he is around middle class types he is in his element and planning a few months hence for his sleep over. As soon as he is dealing with working class types he slips into sneering, condescending mode.
@@Ganychan Well obviously they work, but working class generally refers to people who work in jobs not requiring a degree, while middle class refers to people who do jobs requiring a degree.

Wow! No neutral colours, kitchen islands, énsuites and walk in dressing rooms. No way. This is classic 1990s, in all its garish colours and clutter. As an historical document, this episode is fascinating. To see Kevin at the beginning and his approach, such as helping out with plants and suggestions such as the sleepers for decking, makes for compelling viewing.
Love these early seasons partly for the individuality of home owners. I know interior design changes but very hard these days to get away from "Scandinavian Minimalism"... Also these early seasons hade pioneer in "Eco" friendly material, butterfly roofs, cobb builds, etc.
Who would've thought this wonderful show would still be going strong after 20 Seasons and with the same wonderful host!
I luv the show!! Is my quarantine relief
I love this show! It's such an escape. And look at Kevin with hair! (I prefer the more mature version of him.)
@@victoriaheindel1143 And the spinoffs are great too!
If you like modernistic concrete boxes.......
I think Kevin owns the rights and produces it himself, C4 then buy it, as they do all original content. It's a great show, and watched the world over.
