There's a 3.0 swap station at stockholm sweden as opposed to this 2.0 station. It holds 20 some odd batteries as opposed to 12, is a touch faster (doesnt raise car), and has a 500 kW charger attached to it. Check it out for us if you're ever in that part of the world. Thanks for an interesting video. Take care.

Good video. First time watching you. To help with some of a couple of the questions asked. - Owning the battery allows you to swap same as any other time. Think of it more like permanent service. - 150 kW superchargers are going to push about 2.2 100 kWh cars through per hour from 20% to 80%, while a 3.0 swap station will do about 8.5 cars per hour. And the swap will bring them all the way from 10% to 90%. So I think if there were 4 cars in front of me before swapping, and I’m at 30% or more power, it’s faster to supercharge. If I’m the 4th or less and lower than 30%, it’s def faster to swap. Plus, you can enter the wait line on the app, which is super helpful. (It manages no shows or people too far away.)
Fascinating - thank you for bringing this to us. As someone who drives a mini Cooper SE with its puny little battery out into the rural charging waste lands north of Toronto, where getting a working charging station of the very few that you can find at all is literally a 50-50 chance - the idea that someone has actually succeeded at this kind of organizational and logistics effort to put in swap stations is like another universe. Nice to see!
You all seem to be missing the point about battery swapping. This will soon be completely autonomous. You will not be required to drive it to the swap station. The car will take its self there whilst you are at work or asleep or the autonomous taxi will schedule a swap when required etc. That is the future, I seem to recall NIO even releasing a short animation of just that only a few months ago. Just sayin 💪
Absolutely. With 3.0 PSS, swap will be fully autonomous. There is a video (not animation) that shows the process. Car drives (fully autonomous) to a swap station, swaps
no! all swap stations you back into. This is to reduce space of car park area required. difference between 2.0 and 3.0 is number of batteries available and also speed of swapping.
NIO is the only car manufacturer seeing the light ie the obvious benefits of swappable batteries.. Hard to believe all others manufacturers are so blind, but here we are. Looking forward to see NIO succeed.
3 minutes for a fully charged battery with an option to upgrade the battery for longer road trips or sitting at a charging station for an hour? cmon. blows my mind there is even question as to the superiority of these swap stations
Well it is not 3 minutes, you have to look at the time from start to finish if you are going to compare with charging. From start to finish this took 7 minutes, as shown in the video. Still very fast compared to most EV's! But there are still a few drawsbacks compared to charging, even though charging in theory "takes longer". 1. There are only 26 swap stations in Europe, compared to more than 22 000 DC fast charginger (150kW+). 2. This is proprietary technology that only works with Nio vehicles. 3. It won't take many cars in line before charging is faster 4. Because there are so many chargers, queuing is rarely a thing. And once you are connected you can do what ever, go to the toilet, but drinks, buy food etc. For most people charging happens when you are already planning to stop. So in reality it doesn't add much, if any time to your travel. 5. These swap stations are very expensive and require trained personell. 6. If you are queuing. you can't do other stuff like go to the toilet, buy drinks, buys foods etc. Still great technology that has potential. But with most new EV's doing a 10-80% charge in 18-25min, I am not sure battery swap is the future.
I feel like it's going to be a challenge infrastructure-wise in NA, but battery swapping seems like a great system if we just go all in on it and commit.
Why are there still people that think that "for every NIO you need 2 batteries because of swap stations"? With simple math it comes down to like 5-10 percent of extra battery packs needed for the whole NIO fleet.
