  • Park Hill Phase 2 by Mikhail Riches is shortlisted for RIBA's Stirling Prize 2024.
Revitalising a Brutalist landmark: Park Hill Phase 2 is the second phase of an ongoing regeneration of Europe’s largest listed structure which sits on a prominent hillside overlooking Sheffield City Centre.
Internal spaces are modernised through open plan designs and the addition of balconies, while thermal imaging has allowed sustainability experts to identify and improve energy efficiency. A fresh colour palette referencing the nearby Peak District blends with the estate's original concrete, preserves its design heritage, while tree and wildflower plantings cleverly soften the exterior.
Presented by the Royal Institute of British Architects since 1996, the Stirling Prize recognises the UK’s best new architecture.

I wonder how many architects live there - or want to?

It's funny how often people say this about buildings like this or the Barbican/Balfron as some sort of gotcha when in truth the answer is so many. All these modernist buildings are jammed with architects and designers.

@@secularstagflation2913 Fine, but you haven't answered my question, which relates to Sheffield Park Hill and not London's Barbican. I wonder how many architects live there?

@@jasongray4517 It's a Grade 2 (star) listed building which speaks volumes about it's value in architectural terms...on a par with the Golden Lane estate in London EC1 which is very popular with architects...I can't see why an architect wouldn't be drawn here. It's been a successful project where the resale flats have high value. If you know Sheffield then you'll know this is special. There are certainly architectural practices in the commercial spaces. You'll need to join the guys as they knock on doors for the next census to see how many architects reside here....

I know an architect who not only lives there, but runs his practice from there

That's all great and cinematic, but what is actually happening in phase 2?

Phase 2 was the most recent stage of renovations at park hill. Al the flats with beige/ white/ brown panels and full height windows are part of phase 2
